bilities United is holding its 19th annual Authors Luncheon fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel, 4290 El Camino Real in Palo Alto. Four prominent authors will give presentations during the luncheon program, which runs from noon to 2 p.m. They are: ■ Mac Barnett, a children’s author and a rising star in the literary world. ■ Julia Glass, author of “Three Junes,” winner of the 2002 National Book Award for Fiction. ■ Mary Roach, author of the recently released “Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void.”

Molly Hale of Menlo Park received aquatics therapy at Abilities United swim center, and has learned to walk again after a spinal cord injury 14 years ago.

Simon Winchester, author, journalist, and broadcaster who has worked as a foreign correspondent for most of his career. Prior to the luncheon, starting at 10:30 a.m., the book salon opens for sales and signings and the Abilities United art show and silent auction will be held. The luncheon program will open with a presentation by Molly Hale of Menlo Park, a client of Abilities United who was the subject of the documentary, “Moment by Moment: The Healing Journey of Molly Hale,” by Dorothy Fadiman, also of Menlo Park. When Ms. Hale broke her neck in an automobile rollover, she was told she would never move intentionally below her shoulders. After over 14 years of warm-water aquatic therapy and exercise at the Abilities United Betty Wright Swim Center, she is able to drive her wheelchair-equipped van and walk with assistance. She competes in martial art competitions, enjoys her lifelong love of horseback riding, and travels internationally to teach about living with a disability. Chair of the luncheon is Gina Rayfield of Portola Valley. She has been involved with Abilities United since 1992, when her daughter, Charlotte, then 1, was referred to early intervention services at Abilities United due to her premature birth. Ms. Rayfield and her daughter, Charlotte, now a seventhgrader at Corte Madera School in Portola Valley, were the keynote speakers at the 2009 Authors Luncheon. Tony Heren of Atherton is honorary chair of the fundraiser. Tickets are available at $125. Call 650-618-3330 or email michele@AbilitiesUnited.org ■

Keeping the ‘Spirit of ’45 Alive’ Submitted by Warren Hegg, a former Menlo Park resident who is the national supervisor for “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive!” — a grassroots initiative to establish an annual day to honor the men and women of the World War II generation.

A

group of local area seniors, who have been participating in a national effort to preserve the legacy of the World War II generation, will be honored during a special Veterans Day event at Courthouse Square, 2200 Broadway in Redwood City, on Thursday, Nov. 11, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Murray Hunt, Virginia Reynolds, Earl Unze, Diana Gutierrez, Murle Webb, Ruth Henders, and Dr. Duane and Hildred Merrill were among the first participants in Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive!, a national grassroots initiative to establish a permanent annual day of remembrance on the second Sunday in every August. All are residents of Woodside Terrace in Redwood City, which was one of several senior living communities that helped launch the project last year. Congress passed legislation earlier this year officially endorsing a National Spirit of ’45 Day, and more than 500 communities across the country held various public events on Aug. 14 to

commemorate the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II, featuring music from the 1940s, re-enactors, proclamations from local and state government officials, and announcements at all 15 major league baseball games. National Spirit of ’45 Day is a time for all America to stop and reflect on the achievements of the ordinary men and women of the “Greatest Generation” so that their example of courage,

VETERANS DAY self-sacrifice, can-do attitude, and commitment to service and community will forever inspire future generations. Youth are being mobilized to help seniors upload their stories and photographs to the project’s website. A team of youth volunteers will be on hand at the Redwood City Veterans Day event to scan the wartime portrait photos of World War II veterans so that they can be archived in a national database and displayed in their community during future Spirit of ’45 Days. The idea of an annual day originated with Edith Shain, the

nurse who was photographed by Life magazine being kissed by a joyous sailor in Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945, the day America learned that Japan had surrendered and the war was over. Ms. Shain, who passed away in June, met with Woodside Terrace residents during a visit to the Bay Area in April to promote Spirit of ’45. “It was our generation’s ‘Greatest Day,” she said. “We had endured the Depression, overcome the forces of tyranny that were threatening the whole world, and then turned from the work of war to helping not only our allies but our former enemies rebuild their countries.” Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive! is being led by the Digital Clubhouse Network, a nonprofit organization created with the support of NASA in 1996 by former SRI International executive and Menlo Park resident, Warren Hegg. The Spirit of ’45 initiative is attracting the support of corporate sponsors, including VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, which is working with the senior living industry to assure that as many of the surviving men and women of the World War II era are able to participate. Visit spiritof45.org for more information and to read the stories being submitted. A

TOWN OF WOODSIDE 2955 WOODSIDE ROAD WOODSIDE, CA 94062

Rosemary Hewlett, wife of H-P founder, dies Rosemary Kopmeier Bradford Hewlett, who for 22 years was married to William R. Hewlett, co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, died Oct. 29 at her home in Atherton after a short illness. She was 91. Born in Milwaukee, she attended Smith College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in English. While on a ski trip to Sun Valley, Idaho, she met the man who would become her first husband, Robert Adam Bradford of Boston. They married in 1942 and lived in Milwaukee until they moved to Atherton in 1957. The Bradfords had four sons and a daughter. In addition to raising her family, she was actively involved in the Palo Alto Junior League, Sacred Heart Preparatory School in Atherton, and Woodside Priory in Portola Valley. She was also an accomplished horsewoman, avid tennis and golf player, and an experienced bridge player, family members said. The family spent many holidays in Sun Valley, where they were enthusiastic skiers. The Bradfords were married for 27 years until his

death from cancer in 1969. In 1978, she married William R. Hewlett, whose first wife, Rosemary Hewlett Flora, died in 1977. In 22 years of marriage, Rosemary and William Hewlett traveled the world, and divided their time between Portola Valley and Sun Valley. They shared common interests in the outdoors, their large families, and multiple charities, family members said. Mr. Hewlett, who died in 2001, ignited her philanthropic interests. She became actively involved on the boards of Menlo College and the San Francisco Opera Company, and was one of the founding board members of the Peninsula Bridge program, promoting academic and personal success for motivated middleschool students from underresourced local communities. The Bridge program in particular gave her much satisfaction, family members said.

She was also a member of the order of the Dames of Malta and numerous other clubs and organizations. The family describes her as a “vibrant spirit who touched all who met her.” Until very recently, she continued to travel the world and take holidays with family, close friends, and her caretaker for 17 years, Jose Pinto. She is survived by sons David Bradford of Tiburon, Robert Bradford of Woodside, Peter Bradford of Portola Valley, and Jeffrey Bradford of Kauai and Sun Valley; daughter Deborah Bradford Whelan of Atherton; eight grandchildren; and her caretakers, Jose Pinto and Elda Chavez and their family. A private family service and celebration took place Saturday, Nov. 6. Burial will be at the Ketchum Cemetery in Ketchum, Idaho. The family prefers memorial donations to Peninsula Bridge, 457 Kingsley Ave., Palo Alto, CA 94301. Visit peninsulabridge.org/ support.

udrey Rust of Menlo Park, the longtime leader of Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), will receive this year’s 2010 Athena Award, the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce has announced. Ms. Rust will receive the award at a Chamber luncheon Nov. 17 at the Garden Court Hotel in Palo Alto. The award honors women who demonstrate excellence and creativity in business, contribute to the quality of life in their communities, and help other women realize their leadership potential. Under her leadership since,

POST has protected 63,000 acres of open space land in San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Audrey Rust counties. “Audrey Rust’s achievements in more than two decades as president of Peninsula Open Space Trust are as magnificent as the natural spaces she has worked so hard to preserve,” Congresswoman Anna Eshoo said in a letter supporting her nomination. These lands have become parts of the National Parks System, the National Wildlife Refuge

System, California State Parks, county and city parks, regional open space preserves, and private farmland. Prior to her tenure at POST, Ms. Rust worked with the Sierra Club, Yale University and Stanford University. She has served on numerous local, state and national organizations, primarily in conservation and housing. Athena International established the Athena award in 1982, a professional businesswoman’s organization dedicated to woman’s leadership. Various host organizations, including chambers of commerce, administer the award annually. Tickets for the luncheon are available by calling 324-3121. A

“If I want a Best Seller, I advertise in the Almanac and the Weekly.” – Lyn Jason Cobb As a Realtor serving Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Atherton, Portola Valley and Woodside, I do my utmost to provide extraordinary service to my clients. The Almanac and the Palo Alto Weekly is always where I advertise first because I like the home delivery, editorial focus, and it is a great value. I have always had great results promoting open homes in the Palo Alto Weekly and The Almanac, and I also run in special publications like Spring and Fall Real Estate, Neighborhoods and Info Menlo because of the great coverage and online presence. I am also a big believer in the Palo Alto Weekly’s Open Home Guide, which is by far the most accurate and comprehensive. I’ve had many buyers bring in the guide to my ‘Open Homes’ to see what I have listed.”
