Menlo Park woman fulfills dream to open art gallery in San Francisco By Samantha Bergeson Special to the Almanac

A

fter 20 years in medical start-up companies, including Intuitive Surgical and EndroGastric Solutions, Joan McLoughlin of Menlo Park is pursuing her dream to open an art gallery in San Francisco. An opening night celebration is set for Saturday, Oct. 23, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the McLoughlin Gallery, 49 Geary St., Suite 200. Opening in October is significant for her, since this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ms. McLoughlin, who was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in 2008, plans to give 5 percent of her profits to Stanford Cancer Center, where she worked as a nurse, and San Francisco-based Glide Memorial Church, to fund children’s art programs.

“It has taken me this long to realize I need to follow my dream and open an art gallery,” she said. “It is a crazy idea in the midst of a depressed economy, but … it is what I am destined to do.” A resident of Menlo Park for 19 years, she is driven by her self-described “entrepreneurial spirit” and love for challenges. She began collecting art in her early 20s. The gallery will exhibit a variety of media, ranging from paintings to photography, primarily by established European artists, although works of San Francisco and Los Angeles artists will be sold as well, she said. For the gallery’s premiere evening, all of the artists housed will be showcased, and at least two artists will be in attendance, she said.

Community theater tries something new By Kate Daly Special to The Almanac

oodside Community Theatre is trying something new when it presents the Bay Area premier of the Tony award-winning musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” on Oct. 29, 30 and 31 and Nov. 5, 6 and 7 at Woodside High School Performing Arts Center. The show has a smaller cast than usual — 25 performers — with no children under 17 and no large chorus. It’s also a departure from the classic musicals WCT has put on for years. Director Dan Demers calls “The Drowsy Chaperone” “the antithesis of Fiddler,” referring to last year’s production, “Fiddler on the Roof.” “We wanted something that was new, current and fresh, something that would take the audience away from what’s going on, so it can relax, have fun and enjoy the theater,” Mr. Demers said. This is his first time directing this group. In the past he has directed at Hillbarn Theatre and Serra School. A show within a show, “The Drowsy Chaperone” ran on Broadway, and earned five Tony Awards in 2006, including Best Book and Best Music. Bob Martin and Don McKellar wrote the book; Lisa Lambert and Greg

Morrison composed the music and lyrics. Set in the 1920s, the comedy starts with a man listening to show tunes in his living room when suddenly a full-blown musical springs to life centered around a Broadway starlet seeking love. Elizabeth Santana of San Jose plays that part, reined in at times by The Drowsy Chaperone, or Darlene Batchelder of Woodside. She describes her

Her husband, Darrel, is in the ensemble after appearing in several WCT shows, as well. She launched her acting career when she was a student at Woodside High a few decades ago, and played Yenta in WCT’s production last year. Ms. Batchelder sees this year’s show as an entirely different experience. “It’s really an

ensemble cast of people who’ve had leads in shows,” she says. Ron Lopez, for example, who plays The Man in the Chair or narrator of this musical, had a big part in WCT’s “Guys N Dolls,” and so did Damian Marhefka who is appearing as Aldolpho. Cheryl Ringman plays another lead, Kitty, in her seventh WCT show. Mrs. Tottendale is portrayed by Brenda Harris who started her acting career at age 7 as Imogene Coca’s daughter on TV. Co-producer Claudia McCarley describes the music as “very upbeat; it takes off from the Golden Age of musicals and is a parody on all of those.” Ms. McCarley has appeared in many WCT productions since the group was revived in 2003, but this time around she’s taking a break from the stage to produce, and watch her daughter, Jacquie, perform in the ensemble. Co-producer Donna Losey is back producing and supporting her actress daughter, Brigitte. This is Brigitte’s eighth WCT show. The same holds true for fellow Woodside High senior LeeAnn Patrick. They’re both in the ensemble. Ms. Patrick’s family is glad to live in Woodside close to rehearsals because her father, Akio, is the set designer and See DROWSY, page 23

West Bay applies its magic to Verdi masterpiece By Mort Levine

N REVIEW

W

est Bay Opera in Palo Alto is 55 years old and it has waited all this time to present “La Forza del Destino, the massively complex and convoluted tale of love, honor and spiritual redemption. It was worth waiting for. Within its nearly four hours is some of the most beautiful dramatic opera music ever written. In many ways, it was a remarkable achievement for the regional company. The audience at the opening weekend performance on Oct. 15 at Lucie Stern Theatre was enthusiastic in its approval. The two concluding shows are Saturday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. Tickets are still available. The title’s translation could be “the power of destiny. And it may be that West Bay was compelled by fate to tackle such an awesome assignment. WBO has the array of outstanding singers, and a dedicated creative team of artistic specialists in operatic music, staging, set design and all the myriad other tasks involved in this most complex performance medium. And Midpeninsula audiences are highly supportive of reaching beyond the old familiar offerings. This season, West Bay’s entire schedule is made up of works few regional opera theaters ever take on. “Forza takes us back to the

1740s in Spain and Italy. The proud Marquis of Calatrava is shocked to discover his daughter, Leonora, is about to elope with Alvaro, a Peruvian halfcaste (although he is an Inca prince). When Alvaro’s pistol is tossed away, it accidentally kills the father. This sets in motion a commitment on the part of Carlo, Leonora’s brother, to kill both of the lovers, who separately reach a monastery where Carlo forces a duel and is himself killed, but not before he has mortally stabbed his sister. Offstage, fortunately. Leonora’s anguished death brings her wish for her lover’s redemption. Outstanding voices and strong dramatic acting marked all of the principals. Leonora is sung by the young Russian soprano, Olga Chernisheva, whose versatility was heard in the title role of Manon Lescaut last season at West Bay. Her vibrant aria renditions, such as “pace, pace mio Dio, evoked memories of Leontyne Price and Maria Callas in earlier days in this role. Her Inca prince, Don Alvaro, is sung by tenor Percy Martinez, who is actually a native of Peru. Carlo is Gabriel Manro, a powerful baritone making his first company appearance, who See OPERA, page 26

Salon Menlo hosts Halloween event Salon Menlo is holding a “Halloween/Edgar Allan Poe Raven” event at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, in the Fireside Room of the Menlo Park Recreation Center, 701 Alma St. There will be a reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” a classic written in 1845. Dr. Doug Kalish will recite and explain the poem, accompanied by a specially created raven sock puppet. Menlo Park reference librarian OPERA continued from page 25

seemed to thrive on the evil deeds to which fate was driving him. Several other key singing roles were critical to the total impact, especially in bringing forth the many changes of mood, a hallmark of the late Verdi operas. The outstanding acting talents coupled with strong vocal presentations came from mezzo soprano Michele Detwiler as the feisty gypsy army camp follower, Preziosilla; bassbaritone Peter Graham was pivotal in the calming, authoritative role of Padre Guardiano; and a contrasting clerical role of the bumbling Friar Melitone, was well-sung by Carl King in his WBO debut. The adult and boys chorus takes on special duties in “Forza,” more so than most Verdi operas. Led by the booming bass of Carlos Aguilar, the chorus was almost as critical as the principals in moving the story forward. Credit much of the success to the theatrical wisdom and experience of director David Ostwald, a Portola Valley resident when he isn’t

and filmmaker Nick Szegda will screen and discuss the one hour 1935 horror film, “The Raven,” directed by Lew Landers and starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. There will be a “Farmers’ Market Halloween” brunch, says Lauren John, co-founder of Salon Menlo. The entire event is free and funded by the Al Jacobs Fund, administered by the Friends of the Menlo Park Public Library. in New York. The director amazingly was able to move huge forces seamlessly around the small stage. One scene even used all of the aislespace at Lucie Stern for a candlelight march by the monks. Conductor of the opera Michel Singher not only did the reduction of the score from a huge symphonic orchestra to a 30-piece ensemble, he also guided the talented set of musicians in the small pit, but over video monitors in several spaces he could not see. His superb command brought out the fullness of the score despite the orchestra’s spatial limitations. The theater’s intimate size allowed excellent balances between the voices and the instruments. Gifted veteran WBO set designer Jean-Francois Revon created a giant tapestry that depicts scenes from the opera much in the style of what might be hanging in a Spanish grandee’s castle. Each area was illuminated like a story-board by lighting designer Robert Ted Anderson. British costume designer Claire Townsend made her debut dressing the company in appropriate 18th century color tones and style.
