s ’ y t i C k Par 2014 Best B y Pat R i C k C o n e When The Park Record started its online poll for Park City’s Best last year, we were wondering if anyone would notice, give their opinions, and vote for their favorite services, people, and places. Well, 1,000 of you did, and this year almost four times that number participated. Now, this isn’t Forbes or Zagat; there are no stars or diamonds. But in the following pages you’ll find out what Parkites think are the best of the best in their town. There are 100 categories: from Most Colorful Character to the Best Burger in town. Who runs the Best Ski Rental Shop? Where can you board your dog? Who’s the Best Chef, who’s the Best Youth Coach, and where’s the Best Fishing Hole? Fifteen years ago, when Parkites said they were world-class, I would tell them they just didn’t get out enough. But after the 2002 Winter Olympics, and today’s growth, wealth, and diversity of services, this little town has hit the big time. Now, there are still places to get a burrito for under $10. There are great trails, and teachers, and nonprofits. It’s still a real town that hosts the world. But we also have hotels where a room costs a month’s rent. We are now, unequivocally, World Class. Here you’ll find some stupendous dining, amazing venues, and fantastic people doing amazing things. Park City is also a town with a past, some shady, some not so much. Your answers reflected that when people described a place as “near where Dan’s used to be,” and “the guy with the beard and tattoos that used to work there.” In fact, I heard it takes three Parkites to change a light bulb: one to change it and two to talk about how nice the old one was. Our historic past has taken on histrionic heights, as falling-down shacks are repurposed, where high-end distilleries operate out of old garages, and wine vaults surpass state liquor stores. It was amusing, once again, to read your answers. For instance, Best Bartender answers included “the blond girl in No Name,” and “the guy with long dark dreadlocks.” Two bars made the Best Place for Dogs. Park City’s Best Mexican Restaurant’s name, Chubasco, varied from “Cabascos,” to “Chibadco, to “Chubasa, to “Chubasko,” though us locals tend to call it Chubbies. Ah Sushi became Oh Susie. Grubsteak became Grabsteak, and Local Lizard in place of Loco Lizard. Intent and hanging chads - they all counted. The best place to take your parents? Back to the airport. Colorful characters included a Bernese named Lily, Larry the Legend (truly a legend), and George the Hack (“most people try too hard”). Best Musician was Bill Wyman (perhaps they meant piano-man Rich Wyman, and not the Stones bassist?) Best View? “Anywhere...just look above eye level.” And the “manhole cover near the top of the driving range” won one vote for Best Fishing Spot....hmm, worth a try. So, welcome to Park City’s Best for 2014. You’ll find some usual suspects, some up-and-comers, and some Cinderella stories. You’ll meet people that you didn’t know, and ones who everyone knows. I know I did. And remember, it’s the American Way: it’s who gets the most votes that wins. See you next year.

The Terrace Cafe at the St. Regis could almost be called “ski through,” rather than “ski-in.” Grab a salad, soup, or sandwich and leave your boots on as you warm up by the fire garden. It’s casual but refined, and the view is unsurpassed. Start with one of their signature wasabi Bloody Marys, or perhaps some complimentary bubbly during happy hour, but remember...unless you’re staying there, you still have some skiing to do. You can have one or two, but then take the complimentary funicular down.

Located right next to Park City Mountain Resort’s Town Lift, it’s no effort to drop by High West after a hard day for a cold drink. Meet your friends, make some new ones, and relax in an historic saloon setting that was once a garage. Ted Russell, operations manager at High West, sums it up: “It’s the only ski-in, ski-out distillery in the world.” And patron Dustin Pargeon agrees: “The location is amazing as we were able to basically ski right up to the front door.” Ski in, stagger out.

T

he key to great aprés ski is location and keeping your boots on. It’s not apres ski if you have to go change your clothes, and The Corner Store at Park City Mountain Resort is that place. It’s a locals favorite to unwind, brag, and meet your pals. Everyone goes there, and you might run into the “no last name” gang named Shaun, Ted, and Sage. “It’s an apres ski location unlike anything else in the state,” says owner Max Doilney. “We want to make sure that employees of the mountain and local, hard-working people can have a place they can feel at home when they go skiing,” alluding to nights dedicated to PCMR hosts, patrollers, and liftees. Their wings, waffle fries, and smoked meats are legendary. Skiers refuel here after a hard-charging day on the mountain, the last day of the year, or the infamous Chinese downhill where there are no rules: a mass start on top of Jupe, first person to cross the finish line and chug a beer wins. Then it’s on to the mechanical bull, some more PBR, and it’s sort of a blur from there.

There’s not a nicer way to eat a meal than seated on Wahso’s deck watching the serenity of the mountains, and bustle of Main Street. In fact take your pick from two decks, or dine with your group in the compartmentalized rooms. Try the new watermelon and goat cheese salad, or steamed pork buns, or porcini mushroom-dusted filet. There’re old favorites, and new adventures. “But there will be a revolt it we take some things off,” says manager Kara Cordray, thinking of the miso black cod. Head downstairs from Main Street and revel in the “Freestyle Asian Cuisine” at Shabu. You might try the black cod, or Chilean sea bass (big favorites), or order from the brand new summer sushi and hot menu. Take your pick of the deck out front, or back and watch the sun set on the mountains. “It seems like there’s firecracker shrimp on every table every time,” says manager Breaux Murphy. “And we have tons of local business.” Chef/owner Robert Valaika and his brother Kevin will dazzle you with food as art. And their Open Table reservation system lets you control the time and place of your meal.

Choose from six different ones. A mix of Chinese and Japanese, Full House has what you’re looking for: a sushi bar, full liquor license, lots of parking, and delicious, fresh, Asian food . One diner says, “It’s excellent food for a great price. Try the crunchy salmon sushi... it’ll blow you away.” Another patron marveled at the large menu, “We come here often, and we still haven’t tried

everything. We love it that we can get it as spicy as we want.” Jason watches their eyes water. “People love the Slippery Shrimp,” says Jason. They’re lightly battered, with ginger, garlic, and green onion, served with sweet-and-sour sauce. Try the Seafood Hot Pot with shrimp, scallops, fish, squid, and vegetables, served in a clay pot. And, they have monthly specials, but you should have no problem finding something to order here. If you’re hungry an hour later, that’s your fault. But no worries, you’ll just have to come back again another time.

Sierra Brassey is a Park City native who knows how to mix it up. She loves to get creative with jalapeno and mint margaritas at Drafts. It’s a fun, energetic sports bar with 10 big screens and a door to their heated deck and the ski lifts, and she loves working here. Have Sierra pour you a pint of one of their 20 beers on tap. One patron wrote, “Sierra was tending bar by herself and was flying all over the place serving people in minutes flat...without missing a beat on the drink orders. Had one of the best Whiskey Sours ever!” She knows what she’s doing.

Ryan is a professional bartender. He mixed drinks for eight years at the tres fancy La Caille in Salt Lake City before landing at the Blind Dog. “I like meeting and talking to people,” he says. “We have a killer wine list and I like suggesting pairings for diners.” And though 90 percent of all mixed drinks are vodka-based, he says we’re starting to see resurgence in other liquors, such as those available from High West Distillery. “For the summer,” he says, “we’re seeing lots of variations on the Mojita.” No wonder their dog is blind.

M

arcel Paramore has mixed feelings, but that’s normal: he’s a mixologist. And not just any bartender but Park City’s Best at the St. Regis Hotel. A Utah native he’s 31, and has been at the St. Regis for five years. He loves the challenge; every day’s a learning experience. “I’ve been exposed here to fresh ingredients: fruits, herbs and spices. Also I’m working with even higher-end clienteles, who expect the finest cocktails and the most elegant service,” says Paramore. “It’s exciting coming up with new and exciting cocktails.” For instance, he recently created a jalapeno-infused lime-based gin drink, for the owner of Gallo Wines, to showcase their New Amsterdam Gin. Initially called Hot Nam, now it’s the Jalagin. What keeps him sane? He camps and cooks and backpacks, and invents new drinks, of course, and maintains a positive attitude. “When it gets busy and stressful you cannot dwell on the problem,” he says, “you must only focus on the solution.” photo BY patRiCk CoNe

High West’s burger is an 8-ounce mix of bison and beef, on a fresh Brioche bun, with gruyere, blue cheese and fresh shallots. Try the triple-cooked fries, which have an amazing crust. One diner wrote, “The food ranged from pretty damn good to totally epic. The burger is solid.” High West is old-time rough on the outside, but well-appointed inside. Pair your burger with one of their award-winning whiskey cocktails, some of Park City’s Best.

O

And, it’s popular: No Name serves over 12,000 of them a year. “We were the first ones to serve buffalo in town,” according to co-owner Frank X. Dwyer. With home-made chips, the burger just screams for a cold one too, or two, or three. The No Name is a Park City institution, and some of

The Boneyard is an elegant pub where the custom-built, woodfired charcoal grill gives character to the bison, ribs, and steaks. Jerry’s brought some items, and staff, with him, and they all work well together. This winter the Wine Dive will open next door, adding to the whole atmosphere.

E

xecutive Chef Nick Lees grew up on a fruit farm: “I grew up around food,” he says, “and know where food comes from.” A native, he has the passion for local organic foods, and even uses some heirloom produce. He cooks American classics with a twist like his Chicken with Waffles. It’s the only restaurant in Utah that serves Snake River Farms Wagyu beef, and he knows what to do with it. Edge, in the Westgate Resort at Canyons, is a lovely, comfortable, modern spot for fine dining. Start with the Silk Road Spicy Shrimp and move on to the Eye of Ribeye, the Karobuta Tomahawk Pork Chop, or the Half Chicken under a Brick. Nick has the concentration and eye of an artist as he cooks and assembles each plate. And, he’s always thinking of new, different, and better ways to showcase local foods, such as using the Sous-vide method to cook lobster, for example. Sealed in a bag and cooked in a hot water bath it keeps things moist with no loss of flavor. Nick is continuing to mature as a chef, and we know he’ll never lose touch with his roots.

Seth Adams has been at Riverhorse for a decade now, the past three as an owner. He cooks simple foods in ways that are delicious and beautiful: he cooks what he wants to eat. See for yourself and try the peach and Manteca cheese pork chop, or the blue-corn dredged soft shell crab. “The favorite is still the macadamia nut encrusted halibut,” he says, “that and the game trio.” Diamond and star awards hang on their walls, and locals pour in to this award-winning restaurant with its stupendous deck opening off the main room, cantilevered over Main Street, with a view of the mountains. “We’re a special occasion restaurant,” says Adams. He’ll make sure your visit will be.

Working on historic structures is not easy, but Pete has been specializing in Old Town construction for over 20 years. “We have the ability and experience to keep the building’s historic aesthetics intact, while blending the structure with modern technologies and amenities,” says Pete. “We can get your home ready for the next 100 years.”

After eight years in Aspen, he pulled up stakes and moved his family here in 1992, and since then he’s seen Park City grow from homes to private ski lodges, from a close-knit small town to a world renowned recreation spot. From new construction to renovations, he knows how to get things done, and his clients will tell you he’s the best in town. “It’s the world of making

PARK CITY’S

en and Toby Tolpinrud moved to Park City in 1974 from San Francisco, and at first Toby was wondering what she’d gotten into. But now, it’s home, and they’re locals with a thriving business. This year PMA is celebrating its 30th year in business. Property managers come and go, but PMA has 41 clients and 1,500 units, and is well respected as a group of professionals. They know how to treat clients, but more importantly, they’ve specialized. “What sets us apart is that we don’t do nightly rentals, only HOAs and commercial,” says owner Toby Tolpinrud. “We love this business.” They also manage all of the annual meetings, minutes, and all accounting for clients such as the 180 units at the Racquet Club. They have a staff of 13, including Phil Dascomb, a general contractor, who knows how to wrangle painters, plumbers, and builders. And all of this business came to them without any advertising; it’s all word of mouth. So they must be doing something right. “We have lived in other governed associations,” says one client, “and your approach is like night and day.” Toby says, “”We love the people, and we’re problem solvers. We’re people-people, and we are customer oriented.” This kind of business doesn’t just happen; it’s built one client at a time.

Park City Lodging is celebrating its 30th year in business this year, providing visitors with vacation rentals and much more. Need lift tickets, groceries, transportation or ski rentals? They’ll take care of it. They know the ins and outs of Park City, the best restaurants, activities, and events, have a handle on packages, specials, and their online search for lodging is great. They want you to feel at home here in our home. Have fun.

“They really understand dogs,” says one long-time client of Summit Pet Care. They’ll keep them safe, and you can get him back clean and happy. “It’s all about service,” says one client. If your dog is used to its bowl and food from home, then they’ll make sure that’s what they get. Want to opt in for a pool party, snuggle time, or Yappy Hour, they’re all for it. They’ll even take them on a walk around town and show off their new doo.

Need a friendly place for your best friend to go, so you can go? A place that loves dogs and cats, and likes keeping them happy? That would be White Pine Boarding, part of the White Pine Veterinary Clinic. How about a haircut while they’re there? Everyone likes a clean dog, and grooming will keep your pet healthy and happy. They offer daycare and boarding too, with lots of walks. You can schedule exams, vaccinations, and dental care while there, since White Pine knows how to take care of animals. It’s one stop shopping for your cat or dog.

D

oginhaus has gone to the dogs, and they’re happy about it. This bright, clean, and large home-awayfrom-home for your pal is a well-designed, full service, boarding house for cats and dogs. From the lobby you can look into their playground space, a clean, astro-turfed room with toys, and ramps. There’s even an outdoor area with a pool. Up to 60 dogs at a time might be checked in and they all seem to be having fun and getting along. Manager Jen Doherty says, “We rarely have a fight,” and very patient staff members are with them in the 3,000 square-foot arena for at least five hours a day before they retire to their “lodges.”

It is not a quiet job. “We can board up to a month,” she says, “We keep it small and intimate and healthy.” The concept has been welcomed in the community. “Our business has doubled in the last year,” she adds. They also have a spa, boutique, cattery, and full grooming studio, plus the vets at Powder Paws are a minute walk across the parking lot. But what if Fido needs some time alone? There’s the private penthouse, of course, for $80 a day. One client wrote, “Marley loves it! She cries all the way home because she misses her friends! When she realizes she’s coming to Doginhaus, she gets very excited.” It’s a dog’s (and cat’s) life.

What’s in a name? Lunatic Fringe is one to remember. They’re committed to reuse, reduce, and recycle, as part of their Go Green team culture – which is important to many Park City clients. They use paper rather than plastic, and a system that keeps chemicals out of our water systems. The styles today are soft, loose, and natural, and they’re masters at making you have a good-hair day. “It’s big-city style in a small town,” says manager Jake Robins. Which describes Park City these days: small but worldly.

Spectrum Salon has only been open in Kimball Junction for a short time, but already has a loyal following. They’re friendly and the salon is new, fresh, with unique decor. They offer everything from a plain cut, to makeup, coloring, waxing, and eyelash extensions. It’s a great, and not awkward, place for guys and kids to get a haircut as well. They’re dedicated to providing a comfortable, rejuvenating, and modern experience while there.

O

wner Shylow Wolfinjer’s motto at Ohh La La is, “What’s fashionable is always moving forwards, and keeping pace is a requirement.” They cater to everyone from Peoa to Park Avenue, with a list of services including cut and color, perms, weaves, extensions and scalp treatments. They’ll do makeup, pedicures and manicures, and eyelash tinting and extensions. One extension client said, “I’m addicted to her services.” Shylow bought Ooh La La in 2007 after working there for four years, and business is good. One client comes a long way, “She’s the best! I even fly from Miami or San Francisco just to see her!” They welcome walk-ins and get their fair share from the Marriott next door, but most of their business is local. “The girls work really well together,” says Shylow. It looks like they’re having fun too, it’s high energy with lots of light. Their testimonials run deep. Deb says this about her: “A true ‘hair artist’ is hard to find - almost anyone can cut and color, but to envision and do it well, to cut and do it expertly, and to color perfectly....the girl has skill.” Heir apparent. photo BY patRiCk CoNe

Hotel Park City doesn’t do ski in-ski out, but then it’s spring on the golf course long before green leaves come to the high mountains. They have it all, from one of the finest public golf courses in Utah out their door, a pool and spa, private patios and fireplaces, to the Ruth’s Chris steakhouse inside. There’s valet parking, ski tuning, concierge, and shuttle service to the ski resorts; plus a skier’s buffet in the morning. TripAdvisor awarded the Hotel Park City their 2013 “certificate of excellence,” and visitors love the quiet ambience. “Love the cottages,” writes one, “They have a warm cozy mountain feel after a fun day of skiing. It’s mountain classic.”

F

or the second year in a row, the Montage has been voted Park City’s Best hotel. And what’s not to like? From its location snuggled at the top of Deer Valley, to its magnificent lobby, divine dining, opulent rooms, and attention to detail: it’s the top spot. But it’s more than just stone and glass, the service and ambience allows even the most harried traveler to take a break, relax, and have some fun - kids included. They know how to treat people, and guests respond well to their authenticity. The staff is there to help, without getting in the way; they really seem to enjoy their work. From the outdoor pool, to the spa (patterned after the one at the Hearst Castle at San Simeon), to Daly’s Pub (where the family can bowl, play games, and share some pub grub). It’s a fantastic getaway, not to mention a premiere site for meetings and conventions. Skiing and hiking trails start out the doors, you can see the stars at night, and it’s roughing it, sort of, but with class and style. You can do it all, or just do nothing, and relax. photo BY patRiCk CoNe

What better place to practice sports massage, than in Park City? People push their bodies here like nowhere else, and that sometimes means some creaks, groans, and pops. Nelson Reese has been doing deep-tissue massage here for 18 years, and says, “I do a lot of work on Crossfit people, who push their bodies very hard.” He also has a number of winter Olympic athletes who see him regularly. “It’s about pain resolution, and aligning their bodies,” says Reese. And as the population ages, but remains active, there’re a lot of potential clients out there.

N

ow in its 10th year, Knead a Massage has a mission, according to owner Terri Holbrooke: “provide, regular, affordable massage...no frills, just a great therapeutic massage for both men and women.” And they seem to have succeeded. It’s calm and comfortable, and not too girly either. A good massage doesn’t have to break the bank and their sessions are very reasonable, from the Knot so Kneady (30 minutes) to the Very Kneady (90 minutes) massage. They also offer hot stone, and Thai massage. photo BY patRiCk CoNe

park record | park city’s best | july 2014 | 38

“We’ve had out-of-town clients come see us for the last 10 years,” says Holbrooke. With seven rooms and 85 massage therapists, they certainly keep up with the demand. She really likes being part of the fabric of the community as well, something that’s not easy to find. And she adds, “We employ locals, and they’re also the heart of our business.” Massage is not just a luxury anymore, but a mainstay for healthy living, especially in an active, sportscentered town like Park City. Plus, it just feels really, really good.

While not technically a Park City provider, Dr. Mobley sees a lot of patients from Summit County. He specializes from the neck up, meaning cosmetic surgeries for ears, brows, noses and foreheads. He also uses Sculptra, an injectable material to increase facial volume. He also concentrates on non-cosmetic surgery for nasal and brow medical issues, many to repair damage from trauma, congenital, or other facial surgeries. r. Renato Saltz is the rock-star of plastic surgeons. He originally came to Utah via Brazil, Florida, and Alabama as a faculty member at the University of Utah. “I knew when I was in high school that I wanted to be in medicine,” says Saltz, “but didn’t know exactly what.” Now in private practice he does his share of cosmetic surgeries, of course, turning back the clock and reversing gravity. Our mountain environment is harsh, dry, and windy, and wreaks havoc on faces, and skin, which at times can lead to much more serious issues. Sometimes there are surgical solutions, sometimes there

are less-invasive answers. One example of the latter is Coolsculpting, one of Saltz’s newest techniques, “It’s a non-surgical body contouring treatment that freezes away stubborn fat. Your body literally flushes the fat cells away.” But perhaps he is most proud of founding the Image Reborn Foundation, which provides no-cost retreats for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Over 3,000 women have taken advantage of the program that treats the body, mind and spirit. On October 11th the Cirque Du Image Reborn fundraiser will take place at the Stein Eriksen Lodge. Wasatch is the total rehabilitation facility that will help you back from your mis-steps, crashes, and bumps from an active life. They’re open 12 hours a day, to make it easier to maintain your progress. One of their patients, Ryan, had injured his shoulder, and needed help after surgery. “I have made a near full recovery and have come to enjoy the quality of life that I knew before my skiing injury,” he says.

S

ince 2002, Mountaintop Physical Therapy has specialized in muscular skeletal issues, according to manager Will Lloyd. On any given day their six therapists will be working with Olympic athletes, competitive skiers, and post-operative patients. With such an active community there are bound to be injuries, and they will help you get strong again, and help to prevent injuries by strengthening. They also concentrate on women’s health, with pre- and post-natal therapy. Personal trainers will help you concentrate on an individual basis in their new four thousand square foot facility, plus there’s a full Olympic rack and an aquatic therapy pool. For sustaining workouts there’s now a Pilates instructor on staff. They’re all prepared to take you to the next level, whether it’s rehabilitation or helping you step up your game. One patient with a severely fractured wrist writes that Mountaintop has gotten it working again. Another says, “Their staff is truly kind, caring and hard-working...The level of care is above the norm.”

The Park City Animal Clinic is there for our pets, and their owners. They do all sorts of emergency and critical care, as well as wellness and vaccinations. They’ll microchip your dog before he runs away, perform physical therapy and massage, and they even make house calls. Dr. Prior and Dr. Hopper know how to care for all of the animal members of your family, and recognize how important this bond can be.

The vets at Silver Creek are available day and night for emergencies, because dogs and cats don’t just need help during business hours. “They save lives,” says one client about the treatment her sick dog received. “They’re the best vets that have ever walked the earth.” They take their time, and recognize the responsibility they hold. Park City loves its animals, and when they’re in trouble, they count on Silver Creek.

I

t’s pretty obvious that Dr. Dave McDonald likes animals; his two Karelian bear dogs, Wasatch and Eagle, follow him dutifully around the White Pine clinic. And he has a lot of loyal customers, too. With a degree from the University of Wisconsin, he headed west. McDonald says, “It’s the same, old story. I came out to ski, and I guess I never left.” He was raised in Chicago, and loves being out West, where he can hike and bike, and play in a hockey league. Partners with Dr. Lund, until he retired in 2012, Dr. McDonald has three other vets on staff. “There are 27 paychecks here,” he says, of one of the busiest

clinics around. The business has grown with the county, and his specialties include oncology and endoscopy. They encourage wellness exams and vaccinations, but have a full surgical center, complete with lasers and advanced digital diagnostic imaging if needed. There’s an on-site pharmacy, a boarding kennel, and a groomer on call. And then there’s pet dentistry. It’s pretty much onestop care for your pet’s health needs. Though primarily treating cats and dogs, “there’s the occasional rabbit or ferret every so often,” he says. “Birds are a challenge, they’re so different.” Whatever the breed, or species, he’s here to keep them healthy.

Ira Sachs has cut a wide swath in Park City. Maybe you’ve seen him skiing at Deer Valley, with two phones on his chest harness, his long gray hair flying and his lustrous drooping mustache waving. He moved to Utah in 1971 after making a fortune building Holiday Inns back east and then built the Yarrow Hotel with his partners. For the first two years he lived in a motor home at the bottom of Main Street (you could do that back then), but now calls the Stag Lodge home. Everybody seems to have an Ira story. He has a big heart, and gives generously to those in need.

andy Barton, a native Utahn, bought the old Peoa schoolhouse in 1975, on his roundabout journey to Park City. “I started acting with the Park City Players in 1978, and that’s sort of where this all began,” he says. Now, among other things, Barton runs the joint, as the Managing Director of the Egyptian Theatre (which opened in 1926). Every year nearly 40,000 patrons see live theater, youth theater, nationally-recognized musicians, comedy, community events, and film at the Egyptian. Blame it on Randy. work, and that’s Randy’s fault. “Everyone loves Randy,” says KPCW’s Leslie Thatcher. “He calls everyone his friend.” In 1986 he started as a volunteer DJ at the fledging KPCW radio, and today hosts Local View from 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays. He also was the founder of Mountain Town Stages in 1999, bringing music to the people. He moved into town in 2005, but organizee the infamous Peoa Cow Ballet, where cows in tutus reigned, and people bet which numbered square they would poop on during the Cow Pie Bingo game. He’s no slouch, and has brought laughter, smiles, and some tears to theater lovers.

athy Clark has her hands full...with two white kittens, and the other 75 cats and dogs that cycle through the Furburbia pet adoption center at the Tanger Factory Outlets every month. It’s a clean, happy place to make a lifelong friend. “We educate the public here,” says Clark, the director of operations. “Every one of these animals is already saved,” she says. “Some of them may take longer than others, but they’ll all find homes.” FOA Utah has been saving animals since 1990, and adopting out of Furburia for 13 years now. All of the animals are from Utah, and about half of those from the Salt Lake area. “We rescue from shelters only,” she says. When the animals are first adopted they go to the FOA Ranch, east of Park City, where they are spayed or neutered, and screened for medical and behavior issues, before they’re brought out in public. Clark shares the load with two other directors – Lindsay Ortega, the ranch director, and Alyssa Hughes, the medical director. For the past three years FOA Utah has assisted domestic violence victims with their Purple Paws Program, by finding a place for displaced animals. The Miss Kitty’s Barking Ball fundraiser will be held at the Montage Deer Valley on September 13th, where a grateful community can show their support and love for animals, and the group that cares for them.

Park City is trail crazy, and crazy happy, because there are over 350 miles of trails surrounding town. Whether you’re a skier, biker, hiker, runner, or walker, there’s a trail out there for you. And the overseer of much of this system is the Mountain Trails Foundation. They are advocates for local, non-motorized trails for recreational use, as well as maintenance and development. They work with local governments, private landowners, and developers to keep trails open. Happy trails.

We’re not called Park City for nothing, and City Park is the place for all ages, but especially great for teens. “There’re always people playing soccer and volleyball,” says one young woman, “and they’ll ask you to play.” The playground is always busy with kids swinging, climbing, and running. It’s big, with lots of places to sit, with large fields for Frisbee and soccer and baseball, and dogs (and their humans) are on their best behavior. It’s free, and a great place to meet old friends, make new friends and talk to visitors from all over the world.

ark City is a great place to be a teenager; there’s just so much to do. And while it seems like all the fun is in the over-21 clubs, that’s just not so. Kids want to go where there’s the energy and excitement of a club, but of course, not one, and that sounds like they’re headed to Jupiter Bowl. It’s an all-ages combination of bowling alley, lounge, bar, restaurant, pool hall, and arcade. There’s plenty of music, action, and stimulation for all of your senses; there’s a hip, new vibe here. The Jupe is big, with dramatic colored lighting that divide the space into areas of activities. At the center is the Black Diamond Bar with its 360-degree view of the action. There are 16 luxury bowling lanes (4 of those in a private room), with comfy banquette seating, and large sports screens overhead. Try one of the nine-foot pool tables in the billiards lounge, four-way air hockey or other games, and when you’re hungry order dinner from the Lift Grill and Lounge. “I thought the bowling was great,” said one 17-year-old, “but the food was even better!” There are apps like the habanero-mango chicken wings, nine different burgers, entrees of aja fish tacos or Cajun gumbo, and a half dozen different pizzas. There’s even a kids’ menu. Eat in the restaurant or on the lanes. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Redstone is for humans, and it’s the place to go for a date if you’re a teenager. There’s plenty to do: movie theaters, ice cream stores, candy shops, gift shops, and restaurants that range from pricey to frugal. Nearly everything is locally owned, though there are a few chain stores. The bus is free and runs hourly, and you’ll not get run over as you walk through the pedestrian-friendly plaza. The Swaner Nature Reserve and museum is just next door with its trails around the meadow. It’s a great place to get away from Park City, or for citydwellers to evade the summer heat.

hite Pine Touring is for people who don’t stay inside a lot. It’s the premiere (and our readers agree) mountain biking, nordic and backcountry skiing, and hiking shop in town. Started in 1974, it’s been at its new location for seven years now, adjacent to the Union Pacific Rail Trail, which connects town to the rest of Summit County. Manager Eric LaPerle is proud of being so close to so much great terrain: “It’s perfect being at the head of the Rail Trail.” From the back door you can ride from Park City to Wanship, Echo Canyon, and beyond. In the spring the bikes come out as the snow melts and people turn from boards to wheels for outdoor transportation and recreation. Their Cannondale and Specialized bike lines are superb, as are their in-house technicians. But they go beyond that. They offer multi-layered guide services, from the casual historic tour of town, to five-hour tours of some of the most amazing mountain bike trails on the planet, not to mention their classes. Their open-to-everyone, free evening rides can attract over 60 people, who meet up and head out. It’s social, sweaty, and a lot of fun, whether it’s the women-only rides, or for everyone. As sponsors of the Park City Bike Festival, and the women’s mountain bike Team Sugar, White Pine knows exactly what they’re talking about.

Storm Cycles is the brainchild of PC Coffee Roasters owner Rob Hibl, Lauri Bilawa, Juan Patterson, and Todd Henneman. “I’ll do anything that gets me out there on the pedals,” says Hibl. “I’m a coffee geek at heart, but I’m also a bike geek too.” They’ve got a full line of Cannondale, Pivot, and Salsa Fat bikes, and all of the shoes, helmets, gloves and gear that you want. Plus a full-service repair shop, to keep you rolling. And, you might as well get caffeinated next door, while you’re at it.

This Jack Nicklaus-designed course has hosted 10 PGA Senior Tour contests and is well-known and popular. The 15th hole is a Par 5 548-yard hole that requires a long straight drive over the wetlands to the left elbow. Or if you’re confident, shoot for the peninsula and its two bunkers on the right. hat makes the final hole at the Park City Golf Club so great? Well, it’s the home stretch of the round, but it’s also not a hole for sissies. It’s a Par 5, 526-yard strip of green, with out of bounds on both sides, lined by tight trees. Not to mention the fairway bunkers that can grab a long hitter’s ball, And while the green is very large, there’s a creek and lake before you get there. “It rewards the good shot, and punishes the bad,” says David Wintzer in the clubhouse. “There used to be an island green, if you can imagine.” The ladies league foursome of Cindy Meyer, June Kridman, Bari Saturnino, and Marie Backer were relieved when it was over, leaving them at par or over. And another big reason why this is so popular? It’s a public course, so we you can find out for yourself just how straight and long you can hit your first stroke, without ending up on the beach or in the lake.

The Weber River is born in the High Uinta Mountains, and runs 125 miles westward to the Great Salt Lake. The Upper Weber above Oakley is a 10-mile section with cutthroat up to 18 inches but it runs mostly on private ground, although Jans Mountain Outfitters is permitted to guide there. The Middle Weber River is more accessible, along the Rail Trail downriver from Wanship to Coalville. You’ll catch brook, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. The ponds at Deer Valley, surprising many, do have fish in them. The State of Utah has planted both rainbow and tiger trout, in an effort to reduce the wayward goldfish that found their way there, and people are catching fish. “There are a lot of kids out there,” says Les Carriel of Deer Valley Lodging. “ I think the biggest I’ve seen is about 15 inches, and most people throw them back in.” Jans Mountain Outfitters has a free fly fishing and casting clinic on the ponds every Monday at 5 p.m. throughout the summer. No problem hooking a tree behind you....there just aren’t any.

T

he Middle Provo River is one of Utah’s premiere trout fisheries. It runs 15 to 30 feet wide and is restricted to artificial lures and flies only. In 1995 the Jordanelle Lake necessitated the creation of an artificial wetland downriver, and that’s been a boon for fishermen like long-time Parkite Carl Dollhausen. In his ninth decade, Carl said, “The fishing is better now than before the dam. I was here.” He ties his handmade hare’s ear fly onto his line, hoping to fool a few trout on a cool, summer morning. The huge hatch of green drake flies was out, and he was trying to mimic them with his fly. “You have to be able to read the water,” he says, “they’re just as lazy as we are...they wait for the food to come to them.” It’s a great way to spend a summer morning, and there’s plenty of access and parking, but come early...it can get busy. Later Carl said excitedly, with a big smile, “I hooked three large brownies on a blue-wing olive nymph, size 18,” he said. “....biggest one about 16 inches.” And they’re still out there.

Brian Bilzi started playing lacrosse on Long Island when he was 8 years old. Now it’s his turn to help out. For the past five years he’s been coaching 9- and 10-year-olds of Park City Thunder, part of the 212 Lacrosse Team here in Utah. “Younger kids listen better, and they work harder,” says Bilzi. He’s optimistic that some of his kids (Dylan Bauer, Cooper Iacobelli, and Andrew Pederson) will be the future stars of the game. And in the winter, Brian works at Deer Valley as a ski instructor....always teaching, always learning.

o how’d a kid from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan end up in Park City coaching young ski racers? Just lucky I guess. His first night in town, with Bill Bowman, they camped out on the golf course, only to get run off by sprinklers in the morning. In 1985 he started coaching 9- to 10-year-olds as head coach of the DEVO Team, and has been there every winter since. “I do it well, and I love to do it,” former PCST Director Dave Galusha recalls Dar saying. Galusha describes Dar’s method: “His goal was to create great skiers, then great racers, and always with a fun approach.” Anyone who knows Dar knows he’s the biggest, funnest kid on the team. His trademark saying? “Best day ever!” Take Dar’s solution to kids fighting; he makes them sit on a Barbie blanket on the slope holding hands. Only takes once. He teaches them personal responsibility, and Rule No. 1 is that all kids must carry their own equipment; parents stay away. And he doesn’t just talk about how to do things; he sets up situations to make the kids want to succeed. Many of Dar’s graduates have gone on to be Olympians after learning the edgie-wedgie from hm. In fact, there was one local kid named Ted.....

Mick Berry is a local kid who grew up in Park City chasing his brother and friends around the mountain. “I wanted to be as fast as they were,” he said. After competing in freestyle moguls, he says, “I wanted to give back to the kids,” and has been coaching now for 18 years, 10 of those as the director and head coach of PC Freestyle. Their goal is to put athletes on the U.S. Freestyle team, and they have had some successes.
