TO THE 2021 WEDDING GUIDE

There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.

Nietzsche generally knew what he was about, expanding upon Shakespeare’s observation that “love is merely a madness”. Being someone’s true love means you accept them for the person they are, and that you do not wish to change them. And saying ‘I love you’ in front of the world is what your wedding day is all about. It means standing by the one you love during those days of delirious happiness, and also during days of sadness and self-doubt. It means knowing their deepest secrets — and how they have their coffee. It means coming together to plan your wedding — because it’s time to take that ultimate leap! While planning a wedding can be a lot of fun, it can also be very stressful. That’s why here you’ll find a safety net of tips and useful information — keep it handy as you plan your big day.

Covid-19 has understandably had a major impact on weddings, with the number of people choosing to get married dropping to record lows.

ut while many may be choosing  to postpone their nuptials so that family and friends from overseas can attend, there are still plenty of couples forging ahead with their plans. While it’s not the most romantic part of those plans, getting the paperwork sorted is definitely the most important. Because you’re not really married if it’s not legal. In New Zealand there are two ways to get married or have a civil union: By a registered marriage celebrant You can choose: • When and where you’ll get married. • To write your own vows. • A religious or independent celebrant.

But registry ceremonies remain a popular option for many, although they must be held on a weekday and not on a public holiday. A registry ceremony has a set cost ($240 in total) and standard vows. Step 1: Decide where to get married in New Zealand. You’ll need to arrange the celebrant and venue, and remember guests are limited to 20 people. Step 2: Apply for a marriage licence at least three working days before the ceremony, to confirm that it’s legal for you to marry. Step 3: Arrange witnesses — you’ll need to bring two to the ceremony.

To find a celebrant visit celebrants.dia. govt.nz (only registered celebrants can perform weddings or civil unions in New Zealand). You will need to arrange your celebrant before you can get a marriage licence. The cost varies.

Step 4: Get married. Registry ceremonies follow a script and you must use standard vows. Your celebrant will give you a “Copy of particulars of marriage”, and will register your marriage with the government.

Registry ceremonies Registry offices have not been available for ceremonies in New Zealand since 2019.

For more detailed information, visit: www. govt.nz/browse/family-and-whanau/ getting-married/how-to-get-marriedin-nz/registry-ceremonies

GET A MARRIAGE LICENCE You have to arrange a marriage licence at least three working days before you want to get married. If you’re being married by a celebrant, you’ll need their name, and the location and approximate date of the wedding when you apply. GET MARRIED Your celebrant will register your marriage and give you a ‘copy of particulars of marriage’. GET A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE If you need to show anyone legal proof of your marriage, you can order a marriage certificate. It costs $33 to have one sent to you, and it will show your full names, your dates and places of birth, your occupations, your home address when you got married, parents’ full names, the date and place you were married. CHANGING YOUR NAME If you want to change your last name after you’re married, you don’t have to do anything special, but places like banks or government agencies might ask to see a copy of the marriage certificate. (Source: New Zealand Government) TYING THE KNOT OVERSEAS While New Zealand’s borders may be opening up to some countries in the foreseeable future, an overseas wedding remains an unpredictable and risky option. But if you are considering that, most overseas marriages are valid in New Zealand. Check with the country’s officials to see if you need to do anything there. Your marriage will be registered in the country where it takes place, so you don’t need to register it here.

r o f t s i l k c e h c g n i n n a l p A your wedding 9-12 MONTHS BEFORE PLAN style and budget, and decide who is contributing to wedding. SET date, time, and place. BOOK venue(s) and musicians/DJ. ASSEMBLE quotes from photographers, caterers, and wedding dress makers/suppliers. ORDER wedding transport. LOOK at wedding dress designs. DECIDE on colour scheme.

6-9 MONTHS BEFORE INSURE your engagement ring. CHOOSE your wedding dress. VISIT your minister, priest, or celebrant.

Name: Sherilyn Hellier Celebrant Services – North Otago

WRITE a guest list. SEND a save-the-date. ESTABLISH beauty and exercise routine. SELECT a caterer. BAKE/order the wedding cake. DISCUSS flowers with chosen florist.

What do you enjoy most about being a celebrant? Meeting and getting to know a couple then getting to share and advise them in their preparation and planning for their ceremony.

CHOOSE your photographer. ARRANGE videographer and discuss your social media plan.

How long have you been a celebrant? Since early 2019 when friends asked me to perfom their ceremony. Since then I have ecompleted a certificate in Marriage Celebrancy. What do you think is important in your role as a celebrant? Ensuring a couple have the ceremony that they want which reflects their personalities, and helping to create one that is unique to them. Do you have a favourite memory from your career as a celebrant? The best memory always is when you get to tell the couple they are officially married and invite them to seal it with a kiss.

Fun Fact

Men who kiss their wives in the morning are said to live five years longer than those who don’t. xxx

Here in our beautiful corner of the world there is a wedding venue to suit all sizes and styles, from seaside, lakeside, urban, or country.

Choosing the right venue O

Tips: • Research: go online, ask friends, and ring suppliers to get some ideas. Enquire about capacity, cost, and availability, and definitely visit if possible. Photos are fine, but you might not get the right vibe once you’re there. • Be clear on the budget, and be realistic about whether you are public gardens or five-star hotel. • Does it meet your style and theme? A super-formal venue won’t lend itself to a relaxed feel. • Consider having your wedding on a weekday, as you may be able to negotiate a cheaper rate. • Having the ceremony and reception at the same place will save on transport costs.

f course, the level of involvement that you wish to have will determine the location that is the best fit for you. Some prefer a more do-it-yourself style of function, while others would just like to turn up on the day and have nothing to worry about. But don’t forget that as the reception is likely to take up the largest chunk of your budget, it is worth putting in a little more effort to find the perfect place for you. Hotels, resorts, and events centres With everything taken care of, there’s really no guess work involved. All you have to do is arrive, unpack, and be pampered. Vineyards and wineries What’s not to like about an outdoors wedding surrounded by vines? But yes, this is a weatherdependant choice requiring sensible footwear, so make sure that you have a rainy-day Plan B. Gardens, parks, gazebos A season-dependant favourite for the outdoors inclined. Plan for the best blooming season so photos are filled with flowers and green leaves. Church halls and sports clubs If you know how to make the most of a fairly stark space, this is the perfect option for an inexpensive, cheerful family-friendly occasion with all your favourite people. Unique locations It’s your special day, so why not make it super memorable by tying the knot on a boat, a hilltop, or even in your perfectly decorated backyard?

With multiple space options and no venue hire fees, we are sure to have something perfect to suit your big day!

A perfect match:

choosing your celebrant

W

After months of planning, you are finally taking your vows in front of your loved ones on one of the most important days in your life.

hich is why the person standing together with you in front of all your guests, welcoming them and officiating your ceremony is one of the most significant people at your wedding. You may decide on a festivalthemed wedding and would like a celebrant that is happy to wear wellies. You may decide on a more formal occasion and would like the ceremony to follow a certain traditional structure, or maybe you are a couple that find yourselves never on time and need a celebrant who is relaxed and doesn’t mind the start time being flexible. You must find someone that suits your style, someone you really connect with and trust to have the huge responsibility of narrating your special day.

Tips: — sometimes up to a year or more in advance. The only other option is to be willing to be flexible on your time or date. The most popular wedding date and time is between 2-4pm on a Saturday. Early morning weddings or twilight weddings are a fabulous idea and will allow you to get the celebrant you want to work around other weddings. Friday or Sunday weddings are also a great option and often work better for other vendors too! Once you find your celebrant, make sure that you have something in writing with them. This not only ensures you are getting what you are expecting, in relation to date, time, location and fees, but should also outline some terms and conditions for all involved. You should sign a contract with them, that way everyone is clear about what is expected of each other.

Important: Ask them what they are going to wear!

There is nothing worse than celebrant turning up in an outfit that clashes with your colour scheme or style theme and takes the focus away from the couple. A celebrant should not be memorable for the wrong reasons; if they blend with the groom’s colours for example, it will make the overall tone of your photos much softer.

&$&/ %5

Get in early. A good celebrant will book out quickly

Pick someone that is going to fit with your personalities. The ceremony can be one of the most emotional parts of your wedding so you need someone you feel comfortable to laugh and cry with. Someone that understands you, your sense of humour, your ideas and how you want your ceremony to be received by your guests. A really good fit between celebrant and couple is important. They will get to know the intimate parts of your relationship story and sometimes the harder things you want to acknowledge in your ceremony, such as losing a loved one. You should feel natural and comfortable to discuss things openly and honestly, and your relationship should not be awkward or forced.

Mums are special, and never more so than on the day you get married.

S

he will be so proud of you, so why not pay tribute with some thoughtful ideas that show how important your mum(s) is/are to you? INCLUDE her in your planning, choosing a gown, bridesmaid pamper sessions, hens’ night festivities and the excitement on the day of getting ready together. PHOTO CALL in the busyness of the day, organise some special time for a photograph with just the two of you; this is often overlooked with dismay. SOMETHING old, something new, borrowed or blue will have special meaning if it’s come from your mum. Ask her for ideas and if nothing springs to mind, perhaps try to replicate her own bridal bouquet to represent an older era: new flowers, a borrowed design, and a blue ribbon or blossom. PUT IT IN WORDS by inviting your mum to do a reading at your wedding, thank her in your speech, and send her a note of thanks on the morning of the wedding with a bouquet.

e v a s o t s y a W

Shop around. Make, borrow, or hire. Any day but Saturday. Off season wedding. Smaller numbers. Buy booze wholesale, make your own signature drink. Don’t arrange a lavish wedding that will put you in debt. Ask guests to contribute to a money wishing well.

ARM IN ARM with your mum and dad down the aisle is a current popular trend or you may ask her to be your matron of honour. There are no rules, only wishes. VIP or MVP — make her a special sign, decorate her chair or find a special place for her at the top table. REMEMBER her. Even if you no longer have your mum with you she can still be a part of your special day. Carry her photo, wear her gown or her jewellery, play her favourite music and toast her memory.

Cons: • You may feel disappointed you don’t get to keep the suit you were married in. • You’ll potentially have to pay extra for any damage to the suit.

It can take a long time to find the perfect music for your wedding, unless you are lucky enough to have plenty of songs that are meaningful to both of you.

B

ut don’t worry, the internet is a great source of inspiration when you’re stuck. It is of course important to note that some churches and religious marriage celebrants may frown upon certain types of modern music, so talk over your choices with them. Civil ceremonies are more flexible, and provide a great opportunity for you to roll out a string quartet, acoustic duo, or just line up the music on your device and have someone you trust coordinate the timing. For traditional weddings, music will be used at the following times: • incidental music before the wedding. This can start as early as 30 minutes before the ceremony. • the processional — entry of the bridal party.

• hymns or music during the service. • the signing of the register • the recessional — the bride and groom’s departure. • incidental music for the departure of the guests. When it comes to the reception, your budget and musical tastes will dictate whether you opt for a band, DJ, or a simple playlist. Each have their pros and cons, but remember that a DJ should be able to get a feel for the crowd and mix up the songs to suit the mood; a band will have a set repertoire, so check with them before booking; and a playlist can take a long time to compile, and you risk getting hijacked by overly enthusiastic, thrash metal loving guests!

There are many things to consider when choosing wedding and engagement rings: colour of the stones, cuts, metals, and price.

p u t i Ring

U

ltimately it comes down to personal taste though. And even after your big day is over, you’ll be wanting to take good care of this ultimate symbol of your union. Insure it against theft, loss, or damage (you can lose a diamond down the sink, or knock it out of its setting at the supermarket). Remove the ring when using harsh chemicals, applying make-up or sunscreen, playing sports, gardening, or doing the dishes.

Keep it clean Many jewellers will clean your ring free of charge. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are the most popular choices. You can clean your ring at home with a solution of water and mild liquid detergent. Use a softbristled brush, such as a baby toothbrush to loosen dirt, rinse under hot water and dry the ring with a soft, lint-free cloth. For extra shine, soak your diamond in a small bowl of ammonia diluted three times the amount of water then clean and dry as above. (Rings from Dunedin Goldsmiths pictured)

Things to consider when choosing a photographer

m l i f On

• What percentage of your budget? This will determine how much of the day the photographer can capture. • What is included in the package? Understand exactly what your photographer is offering and confirm it in writing. • It is important the photographer understands what style you are after: documentary, natural, posed, candid. • If there is one thing you can’t control, the weather is it. Have a backup plan. • Social media posting: Make sure your wishes are made clear or risk digital disaster.

Transform yourself Before planning a transformation for your wedding day: Be realistic: We can’t transform overnight, so consider your time frame and what is realistic for your body type. Think long term: Far out from your wedding date, set your plans in place as last minute exercise will not get speedy results. Resistance: Resistance training can help you lose weight faster than cardio or dieting alone, and also increases your metabolism. Change it up: Mix up your type of exercise, duration, and intensity to maintain interest and positive results. Watch what you eat: Think clean and lean by cutting down on processed foods and increasing your consumption of fruit, vegetables, and lean protein.

. . . p u n o Roll

Transport is obviously something you will need to arrange for the big day. Use your imagination and choose a transport option that matches your theme — and your personalities! Depending on the location and style of the wedding, you may also need to offer transportation for your guests — to the ceremony, between the ceremony and

reception, and a safe transport option home afterwards. Limousines, hot rods, vintage classics, buses... there are a range of providers throughout the region to suit your needs. Shop around and find the one that suits you best.

What can those closest to the happy couple do to help on the big day?

Speak up! It’s a rare individual who looks forward to public speaking. Although the prospect is enough to fill most with dread, remember that a wedding reception audience is there out of love. Use the following tips to deliver a memorable, heartfelt dedication:

Weddings at Olivers CLYDE, CENTRAL OTAGO

Otago Daily Times | Wedding Guide 2021

Best Man • attends suit fittings. • picks up the groom’s and the groomsmen’s suits. • makes sure the groomsmen arrive on time. • helps the groom dress and gets him to the ceremony on time. • keeps the wedding rings safe during the ceremony. • may act as an official witness at the wedding. • prepares a speech, and delivers it at the reception. • makes sure the couple’s transport is organised. Groomsmen • attend the buck’s night • act as ushers by arriving at the ceremony venue. • hand out any order-of-service booklets. • ensure all guests find their way from the ceremony venue to the reception.

BE PREPARED Give yourself plenty of time to write and practice. Memorise the speech, use cue cards when necessary. TAKE IT EASY Make sure everyone can hear you, while speaking clearly and slowly. READ THE ROOM To deliver a speech that is wedding appropriate, the humour and tone need to appeal to everyone. THEN THERE WAS THE TIME... It is okay to lightly tease the person you are toasting, so remember funny stories to make the room smile. PRAISE BE People love to have their efforts recognised, so remember to mention the bride, bridesmaids, and families. A key question used to be how many guests you would need to feed, but now it’s ‘how many can handle dairy?’ That’s why the dessert table option is becoming more popular; a selection of raw, dairyfree dessert options will be popular with the health conscious, and even having a huge bowl of plain fresh fruit salad means

everyone can enjoy a treat. If you do choose to let them eat cake, three-tiers will generally serve 50-100 guests, and you’ll likely need five layers for 200 guests or more. A great way to save yourself a cakerelated budget blow-out is to order one small, beautiful, decorated display cake, and enough sheet cake to feed the masses.

Many countries have their own beloved wedding customs.

A

merican wedding customs are still popular today, from the bride tossing her bouquet to single female guests, to wearing something old, new, borrowed and blue. Even the most nontraditional bride happily takes part. However, America doesn’t have a monopoly on wedding rituals — many countries have their own beloved customs. Some are sweet (female guests in Sweden kiss the groom when his new wife leaves the room). Some are perplexing (certain Indian brides must first marry a tree for her husband to chop down). And some are downright strange (engaged pairs in Mongolia must kill and butcher a chicken to find a healthy liver before being allowed to wed). But what binds these seemingly disparate customs from near and far is one simple thing: love. If you find them charming, adopt it for your own “I dos” even if its outside your heritage. When it comes to love and weddings there are no borders. • Up for a party? Wedding celebrations in Morocco can be a week-long affair, with preparation rituals, pre-wedding ceremonies, and a days-long feast. • Instead of confetti, in Italy the couple are showered with coloured candy almonds

— five each for health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity. • In Ireland, brides and grooms must keep both feet on the floor at all times when dancing or evil fairies will sweep her away. • Congolese brides and grooms must not smile for the entire wedding day, to show they’re taking the marriage seriously. • In China, the prospective husband shoots his bride with a bow and arrow (hopefully with the arrowheads removed) then breaks the arrows during the ceremony. • Opting for a wishing tree over the traditional guest book, the Dutch are encouraged to hang notes of good wishes on a small potted tree. • No crash dieting for brides on Mauritius: the chubbier the better for the husband, who is thought to be wealthy with such a well-fed wife. • Kenya Maasai brides’ dads spit on them so as to not tempt fate by being too supportive. • A South Korean groom has to tolerate having his feet whipped by family and friends. • Every man who dances with a Cuban bride pins money to her dress to help the couple pay for their wedding and honeymoon.

Your uninterrupted, private, tranquil, 5 star honeymoon destination awaits.

Luxurious, eco-friendly, boutique accommodation set overlooking a secluded native bush valley, Cascade Creek Retreat is the perfect destination for your special getaway.
