• It’s free to enrol It’s free to register or enrol with a GP — but they may charge a consultation fee each time you go to see them after that. GPs normally charge a higher fee, often called a casual rate, for patients that aren’t enrolled at their practice. If you enrol with a GP, your care will be subsidised — so you’ll pay a reduced consultation fee.

• Your medical record Your medical record is kept with the GP you’re enrolled with, but any health professional involved in your care can look at your record. You can ask to look at your record at any time. The Privacy Commissioner website has advice on health privacy.

• Lifeline: 0800-543-354

• Who can enrol? GPs can only enrol people who are eligible for publicly funded health services. When you enrol, you may be asked to show proof of eligibility — such as your passport or birth certificate. You’ll be asked to sign an enrolment form.

Your doctor may refer you to a hospital or specialist doctor for further assessment or Specialistdiagnosis.care is free through the public health system, but you may go on a waiting list. If you want to get specialist advice quickly, you may wish to use a private hospital or specialist. You will have to pay a fee for this, unless you have private health insurance.

• Other fees Immunisation is free for all children even if they aren’t usually eligible for publicly funded health services. GPs can charge a fee for services provided outside of a consultation, such as a repeat prescription or referral letter to a specialist.

• After-hours care Call Healthline for free health advice from registered nurses, 24 hours a day. Phone 0800 General611-116.practices are usually open business hours, Monday to Friday. Every GP is required to have arrangements for their patients to receive care outside these hours. After-hours care usually costs more. Check with your GP where you should go if you do need care outside working hours. (You might have to visit an after-hours medical centre or another GP.)

• After-hours care After-hours care usually costs more.

• Community Services Cards and High Use Health Cards If you’re visiting a medical centre where you’re not enrolled, you’ll pay less if you have a Community Services Card or High Use Health Card. (If you are enrolled at the centre, your fee will already be lower because it is subsidised by the government.)

• Care plus

• What you’ll pay Doctors’ practices and medical centres are privately owned and set their own fees. The cost of a visit will be lower if you’re enrolled with the GP, because the government subsidises the fee. Some general practices join a ‘low cost access’ programme run by their primary health organisation. This means they get extra government funding to keep their fees at low levels.

Striving for excellence and gold standard treatments at the Vein and Skin Clinic, one of New Zealand’s foremost vein treatment and appearance medicine clinics. For more than 20 years, the Vein and Skin Clinic has been in operation, spearheaded by varicose vein specialist Dr Henryk Poczwa and his wife Bernadette Poczwa, the head cosmetic nurse. It was Dr Poczwa who pioneered the modern approach of ‘Endovenous Laser Ablation’ for the treatment of varicose veins, a degenerate disease which previously required surgical stripping. This new, relatively painfree treatment means patients are walking in and out of the procedure, and are back on their feet in no time. This pioneering treatment is now the standard in the treatment of varicose veins around the world. An inspiration to his family, Dr Poczwa’s daughter, Dr Tamsyn Newell and her husband, Dr Jarrod Newell, both trained under her father’s guidance in phlebology — the study of varicose veins. And so, the legacy continues through to the next generation willing to pick up the Withbaton.all of the changes that New Zealand, and the rest of the world have experienced in the last couple of years, it’s good to know that some things remain the same, like the Vein and Skin Clinic, where they understand the merits of family and stability, and it’s those values which have seen them thrive for over two decades. Charitable outreach Mercy Hospital is a not-forprofit organisation and proudly continues the legacy of its founders, the Sisters of Mercy, through charitable outreach. Every year, Mercy invests substantially in community organisations to assist them in delivering their programmes to those in need. Mercy also offers surgical fees relief for patients who are unlikely to receive timely surgical intervention in the public sector.

Looking forward Mercy continues to develop its services, and invest in its campus and people to ensure it is equipped to serve the future health needs of the Otago and Southland community. As part of this strategic growth, Mercy has recently opened a new 22-bed inpatient ward, as well as a redeveloped three-bed intensive care unit. The next stage of campus development will involve the addition of a ninth operating theatre, which Mercy’s CEO Mr Richard Whitney says will ensure Mercy is well positioned to grow service delivery capacity.

Aged in their 70s, 80s, and 90s, the three women were some of the audience’s most loved participants. Fame was not something they sought, but simply being themselves has led to further on-camera exploits. Since their television debut, Maureen, Sybil, and Myrtle have appeared in a music video, a TV commercial, and a photo shoot. Having fun is what brought them together and it’s what keeps them together. Myrtle recalls travelling to Vanuatu shortly after moving into the village. As fate would have it, Sybil signed up for the same trip. They also starred alongside other village residents and staff replicating a Justin Timberlake music video, scene-by-scene. “It was such a wonderful performance, we all got an Oscar”, winks Maureen.

The trio never set out to be on TV. It was a Ryman shuttle driver that set the wheels in motion for their journey to stardom. While driving the ladies to and from town, the driver witnessed their banter and suggested they try out for a part in an upcoming reality television show. The rest, they say, is history.

While they get on brilliantly, Sybil points out that “there’s plenty of fun with everybody else as well”. The other two agree, and Myrtle adds that “the staff are really, really good too. They look after you. And if you’re there by yourself, they make sure you’re safe and that there’s someone else to talk to”.

While the three friends enjoy time together, they don’t live in each other’s pockets. Each one has a variety of different interests. Myrtle says they keep themselves busy and are involved with a lot of activities, with Sybil adding that “you just have to get up and do it”.

Maureen, Sybil, and Myrtle are fun to be around. When they’re together they’re loud, they speak their minds, and they laugh a lot. It was this combination of traits that saw them become the perfect cast members for a reality television show.

“There’s always something going on to helppeople get together and do things.”

Village events like this are just some of the many opportunities for the ladies to get together. There are also activity groups including walking and cycling, book club, and the weekly happy hour – something Maureen, Sybil, and Myrtle enjoy whenever they can.
