Tennis Facilities The David V. Wise Center (right) features four indoor courts with a mediumpace polyurethane rubber floor. The Wise Center provides a state-of-the-art indoor facility right on campus, as well as a rain site for matches. Other amenities include a 210-meter indoor track; a 6,000 square foot weight room; state-of-the-art nautilus equipment; racquetball courts; an aerobics/ dance studio; a pool and diving well; a performance arena used by the basketball and volleyball teams; and an athletic training room. The Robertson Tennis Complex (below) features 12 lighted courts divided into four banks of three courts, a state-of-the-art sound system and a U.S. Open DecoTurf surface. The new blue and green surface was installed during the summer of 2009. Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Head Coach Jared Luteran Certified as a teaching professional by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) for over 20 years, Allegheny head coach Jared Luteran enters his 11th season at the College and continues his streak of establishing the Gators as an annual contender in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Last season, the Allegheny men’s squad erupted for a 10-0 mark in dual matches to start the season, setting a new program record and finishing the season ranked No. 18 in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Allegheny women finished fifth in the conference after upending Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster in the 2012-13 NCAC tournament. In total, six Allegheny student-athletes would earn All-NCAC plaudits as three men and three women made the list, including a third All-NCAC First Team selection for rising senior Patrick Cole, who ended the season ranked No. 22 in the region. During the 2011-12 season, Luteran’s squads saw success both on and off the court. Cole followed up his 2010-11 NCAC Newcomer of the Year award his freshman year with a second All-NCAC first team selection, one of three tennis athletes between the men’s and women’s teams named to All-NCAC squads. In 2010-11, Luteran’s women’s team ended the season with its first ITA regional ranking in program history as they posted a 13-win season en route finishing third in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament, the program’s highest finish since the 1998-99 season. Luteran earned the United State Tennis Association (USTA) Allegheny Mountain District College Coach of the Year Award after the successful 2011 campaign.

Previous Head Coach of West Virginia Wesleyan Two-time WVIAC Coach of the Year 2007 NCAC Co-Coach of the Year (women’s tennis) Winner of three conference titles as a player at WVWC (Two doubles titles, One singles title)

In 2006-07, Luteran was named the NCAC men’s co-coach of the year after the Gators finished third in the NCAC Tournament, the squad’s highest finish since the 1994-95 campaign. It was the first time a tennis coach at Allegheny received the top leagues’ coaching award Luteran wasted no time in making an impact at Allegheny. In his first season as the head coach of the Gators in 2002, Luteran led the men’s team to 11 wins and an improbable upset of top-seed Denison University in the opening round of the NCAC Tournament—the first and only time in the conference’s history the fourth seed upset the top seeded team. Allegheny finished fourth in the league that season, followed by a fifth-place finish in 2005, a fourth-place finish in 2006, and a third-place finish in 2007. Luteran’s squads excel in the classroom as well as they do on the court. During his tenure at Allegheny, he has coached 48 individuals (19 men and 19 women) that have received ITA All-Academic recognition including seven men and eight women that received the honor multiple times. Three different men made the prestigious academic team all four years on campus. Additionally, the women’s program was declared an All-Academic Team by the ITA in 2006 and 2010. Both the men’s and women’s teams were honored by the ITA for the 2011-12 year, with the men tacking on an additional honor during the 2012-13 campaign. A proponent of community service, he has also helped the men’s and women’s squads rack up over 3,000 hours of community service over the past 11 years. Luteran additionally earned the 2010 ITA/USTA Campus and Community Outreach Award for the Middle States Section for community service aimed to benefit the Meadville area. Luteran served as the head men’s tennis coach for four seasons at his alma mater, West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC), prior to arriving in Meadville. In his first season with the Bobcats, he led the team to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) title for the first time in 19 years.

Overall, he guided the squad to a record of 40-15, including two undefeated seasons and a top-40 ranking in NCAA Division II. Luteran was twice honored as the coach of the year in the WVIAC, and he led Wesleyan to the National Tournament for the first time in school history in his time at WVWC. He also coached the women’s tennis team at WVWC for one year, leading the Bobcats to an 11-5 mark and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Luteran trained as a player and as a coach under the guidance of Carlos Goffi, former coach of John and Patrick McEnroe and author of “Tournament Tough”. Luteran graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan in 1998 with a degree in public relations and won three conference titles with the Bobcat tennis team, two in doubles and one as a singles player. He also served as captain his senior year. In addition to coaching, he has served on the national ranking and awards committees for the NCAA and ITA, also leading physical education and outdoor adventure classes. Luteran currently resides in Meadville with his wife Emily and their two children, son Lucas and daughter Ava.

Coaching Staff • 2012-13 Allegheny Highlights Assistant Coach Evan Schreiner Schreiner is in his first season at Allegheny after two seasons as a volunteer assistant for the Clemson University men’s tennis program. Schreiner also served four years as a camp counselor for several camps, including the Clemson Tiger Tennis Camp, Clemson High Performance Tennis Camp, Total Tennis Training Camp and Manny Diaz’s Georgia Tennis Camp, where he was able to learn from legendary coaches Chuck Kriese and Manny Diaz. “I am thrilled to have Coach Schreiner join our staff,” commented Luteran. “He has an impressive coaching background as he spent the last two years working with the Clemson men’s team and working at camps along side Kriese and Diaz. He comes very highly recommended from both the men’s and women’s coaches at Clemson. I was very impressed with his passion and knowledge of the game when he came to campus for his interview.” Schreiner graduated in 2011 from Coker College, an NCAA Division II institution in Hartsville, S.C. A fouryear starter for the Cobras, Schreiner earned a spot in top-flight doubles, also playing No. 2 singles during his collegiate career. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in business management from Coker in 2011, Schreiner recently completed his Masters of Science in parks, recreation and tourism management from Clemson University and is certified by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR).

2012-13 Allegheny Highlights Allegheny Men Start 2012-13 Campaign in Record-Setting Fashion The Allegheny men’s tennis squad kicked off the 2012-13 season with a 10-0 record in dual matches, earning the best start in program history in the progress. The men started the season with a 6-3 win over Hobart at the ninth annual Nancy J. Heath Invitational, using the momentum to pick up wins over Mercyhurst and John Carroll to close out the fall campaign. After sweeping Washington & Jefferson, 9-0, to start the spring season, the Gators went on a tear in Hilton Head, S.C., winning four straight matches. The Gators closed out their record-setting run with wins over Franciscan and North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Ohio Wesleyan in April 2013. Allegheny would finish the season 16-3, including a 3-1 mark in NCAC play.

Allegheny Earns ITA All-Academic Plaudits Six members of the current Allegheny tennis program in addition to the Allegheny men’s tennis team earned Scholar Athlete and All-Academic Team recognition, respectively, by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), in late July. Four members of the men’s program, seniors Frank Mosconi, Charlie Murphy and Kevin Snyder along with junior Alexander Hurtuk earned the honor, while sophomore Andrea Brush and senior Laura Steele of the women’s program were also named ITA Scholar Athletes. Cole earned his third consecutive scholar athlete honor as Hurtuk picked up his second. The remaining five Allegheny student-athletes earned their first award. For a student-athlete to earn ITA Scholar Athlete status, a player must meet incredibly stringent criteria, including a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale).

Cole Earns Arthur Ashe Jr. Award Junior Patrick Cole was named the Central Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership & Sportmanship Award recipient, announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) central office on May 13. In order to receive the honor, an athlete must be either a junior or senior member of an ITA member institution. The nominees are then judged based on tennis accomplishments, scholastic and extra-curricular achievements along with sportsmanship, leadership and character. A three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) first team singles selection and three-time All-NCAC doubles selection, Cole set the program record for most combined wins between singles and doubles matches in a season, as the junior went 22-7 in both top-flight singles and doubles to set the new record with 44 combined wins. Cole also tied freshman Tyler Triolo as the new record holders for most doubles wins in a single season. Off the court, Cole has played a major role in the Allegheny Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), elected to the President position for the 2013-14 season. The 2013 Arthur Ashe Jr. Award winner was co-sponsored by the ITA and United State Tennis Association (USTA).

Gators Make All-NCAC Squad Five members of the 2013-14 Allegheny tennis squad closed out last season with Junior Patrick Cole earned first team singles and second team doubles honors after setting the program record for most combined wins in a single season. Cole went 15-3 in top-flight singles for the Gators this season while posting a 13-3 record in No. 1 doubles with junior Frank Mosconi, who also earned all-conference doubles honors. Freshman Tyler Triolo earned honorable mention singles honors after finishing the season at second-flight singles with a 16-7 overall record and 10-2 record in second-flight singles. Freshmen Sloane Prince and Tiffany Kollah capped their successful seasons for the Blue and Gold with spots on the All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) team, announced on Thursday by the conference office. Prince earned second-team doubles honors with junior Carolyn Shetter after finishing the season at top-flight doubles with a 14-4 record. In the spring, Prince and Shetter won eight straight matches to earn a No. 15 Division III Central Region ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Kollah opened the season in the top-flight spot, finishing the season with a 13-8 overall record and 9-2 record in second-flight matches this spring to earn honorable mention singles honors. Kollah also earned an Athlete of the Week selection in the spring after helping pace the Gators to an 8-1 win over Washington & Jefferson on Mar. 9.

North Coast Athletic Conference

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster -- the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academicstandards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports: 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-eight teams from 21 North Coast sports were represented in NCAA post-season competition during the 2008-09 academic year. The NCAC added two more NCAA Division III swimming championships as Kenyon claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The conference has accumulated 60 national championships since its inception in 1984-85. In the past academic year, 133 NCAA AllAmerica or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
