CAMPBELL HONORS COLLEGE BOUND ON SIGNING DAY

Campbell High School senior try on caps and gowns, from left are Madison Satterfield, Georgia Northwestern Technical College; Kimberly Sea and Kayla Sea, both will attend Georgia State University, and Diego Monroe, Chattahoochee Tech.

As we approach graduation season, Campbell High School launched a spinoff of National Signing Day -- College Signing Day -- on April 26. Instead of athletic signings, Campbell celebrated students taking the next step in their educational journey. At an assembly Campbell seniors announced their college choices and signed a banner. The event gave students an opportunity to celebrate with their peers and parents, where the next step in their educational journey will take them. Kevin Scott of the ADDO Institute was the keynote speaker. “We want to make sure that all students get recognized for their achievements, not just the athletes,” said Principal Dr. Jeanne Walker.

Comments By Cathy GRADUATION SETS THE BEGINNING OF THE FUTURE By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher It was many decades ago that my high school classmates and I sat on the stage at the old Atlanta Municipal Auditorium. We were filled with optimism about our future and thought we were mature enough to begin our lives as adults. As we marched across the stage to receive our diplomas, we had no idea what lay ahead. Some of us were off to college in the fall; some began full-time jobs; some went into the military and the terrors of the Vietnam War. We would lose at least one classmate to that conflict. Those who went to war would grow up very quickly. Those who went into the workforce would also mature at a fast pace. Some of us matured at a slower pace as we continued as students. We will soon hold one of those big reunions ending with a “0”. We have lost an unusually high number of classmates to death during the years since graduation. We have had careers in many different fields, built families, and many have now retired. We have but one thing in common: we stood together on that stage all those years ago and said goodbye to high school. As I remembered those good times, I took out my charm bracelet from high school. The charms reflect the clubs I belonged to, my hobbies and interests. They also predicted the life I would lead in the future. There is the FJA charm – Future Journalist of America – as well as my Quill and Scroll charms for the Journalism Honor Society. The Library Club charm reflects my working in the school library and then my first job as a page at our local library. It also reflects my love of books that continues today. The Future Homemakers of America was a predictor of my love of making a good home for my family. I enjoyed the cooking part of Home Economics classes but, unfortunately, the sewing part, except for hems and buttons, did not become a part of my adult life. Of course I also learned a lot in high school that isn’t reflected in charms, knowledge that isn’t used as much in my career as a journalist: chemistry, calculus,

Latin, history. I use the English and basic math every day. But all of the courses contributed to making me a well-rounded adult as well as preparing me for college. We found out that we never stop learning: how to be an adult, how to get along with people from all walks of life, how to budget, how to have a good work ethic, how to be part of a grown-up family complete with in-laws. We learned childcare and how to be a good parent. As we said goodbye to high school and left the stage that spring evening May 17, 1966, my Hapeville High School classmates and I took our classroom lessons with us out into the world. When we gather in September for our 50th reunion, we will all look older and hopefully be wiser than those innocent graduates. And, hopefully, we will retain our optimism about the future.

Announcing Gina’s Expanded Team! SMYRNA'S AMBER BROCK RELEASES DEBUT NOVEL

Smyrna author Amber Brock released her first novel May 3, “A Fine Imitation.” The debut novel weaves together past and present as she explores the friendships, romances, and social rules that dictate and define lives. Deemed a “not to miss” debut by Library Journal, A Fine Imitation is a feminine, heartfelt, and intensely passionate story from a rising talent. Ms. Brock received an M.A. from the University of Georgia, where she concentrated on modern Spanish film. She currently teaches British literature in Atlanta, Georgia, and lives with her husband, also an English teacher, and their three rescue dogs in Smyrna. The year is 1923 and from her penthouse in Park Avenue’s most prominent building, Vera Bellington sits atop New York’s elite society. But for the romantically inclined Vera, the nights of charity balls and endless cocktail parties have lost their allure as she reflects upon her loveless marriage and empty apartment, brightened only by her beloved paintings. When the mysterious artist Emil Hallan arrives from Europe to paint a mural in the building’s vast pool room, Vera is unable to resist the stranger’s charms. Despite the many secrets he seems to be hiding, she finds herself drawn to the possibilities of a life with him, calling to mind her years at Vassar College when a vibrant friendship almost led to her downfall. As Vera is pulled deeper into a scandalous affair, she is forced to once again consider the true costs of privilege. Connecting these narratives is Vera’s profound love for art, enriching the story with its radiant imagery and providing Vera with an emotional tether that gives her hope even in her most desperate state. As the rules and restrictions of Vera’s life continue to close in around her, she is forced to look within herself in order to find the strength to take control over her own future. Published by Crown, A Fine Imitation presents a fascinating snapshot of New York’s high society during one of the most glamorous periods in American history. (Photo by Nina Parker.)

Mary Annie McDaniel Johnson, a former Fitzhugh Lee student, left, and Jo Sanders, retired school secretary, show off some of the memorabilia from the Oakdale school.

STUDENTS REMEMBER FITZHIUGH LEE Continued from Page 1 Oakdale community and attended the school through 11th grade (the highest grade) from 1937 to 1948. "I'm sick about it," she said. Her daughter, Anne Hall Martin, who also attended the school, was among some 50 people touring the gym on April 22. Locust Grove residents began a brush arbor school in 1896 and later Wiley Brown and Wally Maner each donated some land to build the school. “Fitzhugh Lee was built soon after our beloved (and now gone) Smyrna Elementary and the two schools looked very much alike,” said Mike Terry. “The gymnasiums in both buildings were exactly the same.” Fitzhugh Lee School was the center of life in the Oakdale Community. Two historic plaques, one marking the school as a 1938 Works Project Adminsitration project, and another placed in the gym by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, had been removed and will be preserved according to Dale Gattis of the Cobb schools. "This old gym has so much history," said Gattis. The day that FDR died, the students gathered at the flagpole to remember him. “They marched us out for a ceremony and the Seniors were crying,” remembered Valerie Leffew Francisco. She noted that three generations of her family attended Fitzhugh Lee. Her grandmother started the school’s lunch program, organizing other mothers to provide a hot lunch for the students. “We always had the best sports teams,” she said, remembering the rivalry with Smyrna High School. Jo Sanders served as school secretary for more than three decades. When the school closed, she sought out the old trophy case and salvaged many of the trophies won by the Rams of Fitzhugh Lee over the years. “If it wasn’t for her, we wouldn’t have those trophies,” a former student said. “We have a little while before the buildings are demolished and we hope to house some of the major pieces at the Smyrna Museum,” said School Board Chair Susan Thayer. “We will do everything we can to preserve what we can.” She suggested that some of the bricks could be sold to benefit the Cobb Schools Foundation.” Get weekly updates on news & events at BrightSideCobb.com

SMYRNA GARDEN TOUR FEATURES 5 HOMES Keep Smyrna Beautiful and its sponsors are conducting the 8th annual Garden Tour in Smyrna. Come be amazed by the variety and beauty of gardens that are tucked away in our community, and enjoy local art, music and food as well. Our gardeners are eager to share their passion and expertise to help you create your own peaceful spaces at home. Our goal is to help them share this knowledge to make all of Smyrna as beautiful and pleasant as it can be. Tickets are $15 in advance at Neighbors Feed & Seed, Vickery Hardware, the Bird and The Bee, Love Street, the Recycling Center and the Community Center, and $20 the day of the event at the Taylor-Brawner House. The Tour would make a lovely Mother’s Day gift. Each of the five private gardens featured on the tour has its own story to tell, and owners that are eager to share it with you. The Tea Room is located in the wonderfully restored Taylor-Brawner House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stop by for a complimentary cool glass of tea or lemonade and delicious treats. Enjoy the music of the Campbell High School String Quartet, and browse the plant sale for beautiful bargains. Visit the sponsors’ tables for great deals on local products and services! Local artists will be painting in three of the gardens. The back yard of the Taylor/Hansen home used to be filled with poison ivy, dying trees and a severe slope that funneled water towards the home. The owners cleared the ivy and removed the dying trees.

Notes On The News SMYRNA LACKS VENUES, BUT THAT'S NOT STOPPING ARTS

They built retaining walls and brought in 18 dump trucks of dirt to level out the severely sloping yard. Patios were built to move water away from the home. They have transformed the area into a happy haven for family and friends that includes a bocce ball court, horse shoes, and a putting green. Flagstone steps and custom railings lead down to a pool and hot tub, then on to another patio with a seating area and a fire pit. The garden is constantly evolving with new additions such as Italian plum trees, banana plants, blueberry bushes and assorted other plants. A Fairy Garden was built to watch over the many herbs grown for the home cooks.

By Allan Lipsett Editor/Publisher Smyrna is “venue starved” when it comes to places for art and music performance, according to Jeff Jones, head of the Smyrna Arts and Culture Council. Sure the Community Center gym is a great place for parents to hear their child’s school chorus during the tree lighting, a classical quintet fits nicely at Brawner Hall and small groups have found a home at Acoustics at Oaks End in Smyrna. So, as the SACC plans for the near future, it will work with venues in next-door areas such as the Mable House Amphitheatre and the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. The city is making some progress in planning for uses at the Reed House, but that process will take time. Meanwhile, Jones said the council is looking for warehouse space that can be transformed into performance space. The Council is ambitious in its efforts, instituting two new regular events scheduled each month. The Jonquil City Sessions will bring Don White & Christine to the American Legion Music Hall May 14; and Pierce Pettis and The Night Travelers: James Mckinney & Niki Portman on June 9. The Talk Of The Town Speaker Series features Creating Space: Exploring Black Box Theater by Kevin Renshaw, Monday, May 9 at Brawner Hall. Full details at SmyrnaACC.org. Smyrna Ranks 4th Most Affordable Smyrna ranked as number four on Livability’s list of “Six Most Affordable Cities in Georgia,” outranking Marietta (#5). Warner Robins ranked No. 1; Duluth came in at No. 2 and Gainesville ranked No. 3. No. 6 was Newnan. The website, which has offered a "best places to live" list for 28 years, designates the most affordable cities in Georgia using metrics collected on quality of life, housing, transportation options and best cost of living compared to other communities in Georgia. Biggest Fan Awaits First Pitch The Braves' biggest fan -- the massive Chick-fil-A cow that overlooked the outfield at Turner Field for the past eight years -- has made the move to Sun Trust Park. It began as a promotion and became a fixture at the Ted. Over the past eight seasons the cow has seen 615 games, 530 Braves Home runs and 347 Braves wins. While the distance from Turner Field to SunTrust Park is a short drive up I-75, the Cow took a 834-mile road trip, beginning March 5 and ending with a new vantage point over right-center field in SunTrust Park in April. In between, the beloved bovine got some well-deserved R&R in New Orleans where a team of 20 people spent 10,000 hours giving him a facelift. The 9-ton figure was outfitted with a brand new LED signboard. During the 2016 season, the Cow will watch from afar and keep an eye on construction at SunTrust Park until Opening Day 2017. Campaign Sign Update This time of year in election season there’s always reports of campaign signs going missing from their locations. While there may some shenanigans at times, one candidate knows why two dozen of his signs were removed from their resting spots in March. He did it himself. District 2 Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott reports; “I pulled up some 25 signs that had been placed in the roadway by some overzealous supporters.” Now let’s see if candidates are as quick to remove signs when their portion of the campaign is over after May 24. 'AFTER-HOURS' MUSIC SALE AT SMYRNA LIBRARY Public libraries are known for their amazing Used Book sales, but customers often donate more than just their extra books to the library. Smyrna Public Library regularly receives donations of music CDs, LPs, and 45s. So, the Friends of Smyrna Library decided to host a sale just for music (and especially vinyl) enthusiasts. “Vinyl & Vino,” a record and CD sale, will be held at Smyrna Public Library on Saturday, May 14, from 6 - 8 p.m. The sale is an “after-hours event,” and attendees will enjoy music, hors d'oeuvres, and a cash bar serving wine and beer. The $10 admission at the door comes with two free drink tickets. The selection of music for sale includes rock, pop, rap, country, gospel, Christian, opera and classical. Formats include CD, 45 rpm and 33 rpm. Classical music and opera vinyl lovers will be especially pleased with the selection. Prices range from $1 to $10 (for box sets). “Vinyl & Vino” benefits the Friends of Smyrna Library. Smyrna Public Library is located at 100 Village Green Circle, Smyrna.
