EMORY-ADVENTIST HOSPITAL TO CLOSE ITS DOORS BY OCT. 31 Emory-Adventist Hospital in Smyrna EAH has faced financial challenges the hospital successful in its mission to

announced it will close its doors effective Oct. 31. “After extensive study and exploration of other alternatives, Adventist Health System (AHS) and Emory Healthcare (EH) have decided to close Emory-Adventist Hospital (EAH), concluding with regret that the hospital is no longer sustainable in today’s dramatically changed health care environment,” according to a statement. The decision was approved by the EAH Board on July 28. The hospital will now begin an orderly transition process toward closure by Oct. 31. “Along with the dedicated physicians and employees of Emory-Adventist, we have worked hard over the years to make

Ultimately, however, the new market conditions in health care have made it impossible for EAH to continue operation.” Dennis Kiley, Emory-Adventist Hospital CEO, said the hospital is committed to a caring and careful transition process, with a continuing focus on quality care for patients and support for its employees. For patients, there will be no immediate changes. More information about the hospital’s continued operation during the closing process, including schedul-

ing of appointments, how to access medical records and other details impacting patients will be announced in the next several weeks. Kiley added that the hospital will be making every effort to help its employees find new jobs, and will host several job fairs with area employers in the coming weeks. Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon said “With the announced closing of Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna, we brace for the departure of not only one of our largest employers but also a community partner. We have cherished our community hospital and the employees remain even closer to our hearts. We will work at moving forward in assisting with the future use of the property.”

Even though EAH has been able to decrease costs, the hospital has had difficulty attracting enough patients in this highly competitive market to be financially sustainable. Weber added that multiple options were explored to avoid closing the hospital. Since the spring of 2013, AHS and EH have talked with a number of other health care providers to discuss possible partnerships. While there was interest, those talks did not lead to an agreement. “We are grateful for the support of our community over these many years,” Kiley said. “It has truly been our privilege to care for the patients and families of the Smyrna area.”

The Smyrna Fire Department welcomed two new pumper trucks in July for Fire Stations 2 and 3. “It’s like Christmas Day here with two new fire trucks,” said Acting Fire Chief Roy Acree. The $905,000 purchase from Wisconsin-based Pierce Manufacturing was paid by SPLOST funds. Each has a 500 gallon tank plus foam capability. These are the first new pumpers in the city in 14 years. It will take about a month to outfit the new trucks and train crews in their use before they are put into service. By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher She stood in her living room, smiling proudly, wearing a small blue back pack. Addie was ready to go to a pre-school summer day camp this past June. Two and ¾ years old at the time, she was ready to learn new things and meet new friends. The only item in her backpack: a small white bear wearing a shirt that proclaimed SMYRNA. Addie turned three early in August and, when the Charlotte school year begins, she will continue to be taught at home by her mom. Considering she could sing “Jesus Love Me” all the way through at 18 months, she is quite bright and is receiving an amazing homeschool education. Addie and her cousin, Lilly Bell, have a love of reading and learning that is advanced for their young age. They have enjoyed books and stories since birth. This is a gift that I would wish for all of the children in our community: books, a love of learning, an excitement about school. Lilly Bell, whose mother is a special education teacher in Virginia, attends a small, private day care center where she enjoys stories, creative play, and interacting with friends. She, like Addie, learns quickly and enjoys her “school.” The new school year has begun in Cobb County and tens of thousands of children have left summer fun behind them for the excitement of the classroom. Here is what I wish for all of students at every grade level: • Time to be creative and use their imaginations • Time to have fun and laugh with friends • An enjoyment of their course work and a love of learning • Classes that challenge their minds and that offer help when needed • Recognition and encouragement of each child’s individual talents • A safe, non-threatening environment • Nourishing food that is healthy and tastes good • Good friends who are supportive • Teachers, parents and community who are supportive We have some amazing schools and amazing teachers in Cobb County. But the education of our children does not begin and end at the classroom door. The education begins in the homes with young children being read to and talked to and listened to. It

continues at home as the child grows older, with discussions, books, a place and time for studying and time for family togetherness. As the child turns into a teen, it becomes harder to have family time, conversations and family fun. When our children were teens and busy with homework and clubs and sports, we would schedule family dinner at a restaurant after church on Sunday. With no distractions we could catch up on their lives. That’s when we learned if they had a date for prom, were running for a class office, trying out for a play, or other news. I miss those first days of school, taking a picture before they went off to school. I remember so many milestones: first day of pre-school and then kindergarten, first time riding a bus (middle school), Peter driving himself and Katie to school for the first time, and first local school day when they were both in away college. Now we await future school beginnings when our grown children have their own first school day milestones for their own daughters.

The Vinings Rotary Club presented its 2014 Hero Award recently to Officer C.A. Vill of the Cobb County Police Department Precinct 3. Officer Vill was shot five times in February during one altercation with two drug sellers but was able to call for assistance and relay information that was needed on the suspects to help with their apprehension later on in the day. The two drug suspects are now behind bars and are no longer a threat to the citizens of Cobb County and to the metro area. Officer Vill is on administrative leave while he recovers from his injuries. Officer Vill was also recognized for his excellent record with the police department by his commanding officer.

This is the 227th anniversary commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787 by 39 brave men at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Master Patrol Officer Darrell Nesbit of the Smyrna Police Department responded to a call at a Glendale Place apartment on July 9 in reference to an 11 month old child not breathing and unresponsive. When MPO Nesbit arrived, he took the infant from the mother, ran outside and began administering first aid on the trunk of his patrol vehicle. MPO Nesbit provided rescue breathing for the infant and after a short time the infant began to breath independently again. “MPO Nesbit’s immediate response and heroic actions are credited to saving the infant’s life,” Smyrna Police spokesperson Christopher Graeff said in a release.

The Smyrna Technology initiative is a group of technology professionals dedicated to the promotion and advancement of technology and technology businesses in the Smyrna, area. “We offer basic technology advice,” explained JR Rickerson. The Ask the Expert gatherings are 9 – 11 a.m. every other Wednesday at Rev Coffee, Spring Road, Smyrna. Upcoming sessions include Aug. 20, Sept. 3 and 17. At a recent session, a tutor had received a table computer as a gift and wanted to know how she could use it in her business. “Members can offer basic technical advice or light consulting and will point you in the right direction to solving your technological issues for your organization or business,” Rickerson said. Anyone living or working in the Smyrna, area who considers themselves a technology professional is welcome to attend the meetings and help to shape Smyrna’s technology environment, he said. Smyrna Firefighters have new equipment to help save the lives of pets in and emergency. New development is coming to the City of Smyrna and Mayor Max Bacon suggested that residents should hear several exciting announcements in the coming weeks. At the annual joint meeting of the Smyrna Business Association and the Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce July 10, Bacon delivered his annual State of the City presentation. First on the list is the former Hickory Lakes Apartments, bought by the city in 2011, razed and now named Smyrna Grove. Bacon said that the 48-acre property is under contract with Atlanta-based Southeast Capital which intends to build an estimated 190 homes projected to sell in the $300,000-plus range. “Those are single-family, owner-occupied,” Bacon said, noting he expects construction to begin within nine months. “We probably could have sold it to a Wal-Mart or another large retailer, and guess what you’d have in 15 years?” Bacon said. “You’d have probably an empty 100,000-square-foot box that does nothing to help the surrounding community. I think by building single-family homes, that’s going to have the same halo effect that we had down here.” Belmont, the former Belmont Hills Propety owned by developer Jack Halpern is the site of 154 single-family homes being built by Houston-based David Weekley Homes. “I think they’ll start out in the mid$200,000 and go up to the $400,000s, that’s according to them,” he said. “That has really been a big plus for us because it has sort of stabilized that area, and younger families are coming because they know Smyrna Elementary is going to be a good school,” Bacon said. Halpern has also purchased the 11acre site at the corner of Atlanta and Spring Roads that was Jonquil Plaza. Bacon said Halpern hasn’t yet submitted plans for what he intends to do with the site. The mayor also noted several other new building project, including: • A new Zaxby’s being built at the corner of Atlanta and Spring Roads. • A Sprouts Farmers Market is also under construction at the corner of the EastWest Connector and South Cobb Drive. • The annexation of Riverview Landing, a mixed us development on the Chattahoochee. Also, as of March, the city’s bond rating by Standard & Poor’s was elevated from AA+ to AAA, the highest rating possible.

Metal silver fillings were invented in 1833. While metal silver and mercury fillings have saved many teeth, there have been significant advances in dental technologies that make tooth colored fillings a better option to restore teeth. Modern tooth colored fillings are a space age resin called composite that is constantly being improved by manufacturers. Silver and composite fillings age differently from one another. Silver fillings, also known as amalgam, tarnish and swell, which can cause a tooth to become stained, or in some cases, crack the tooth. The composite fillings will slowly dissolve back over many years and are much less likely to cause cracking or damage to the tooth. In the modern age of dentistry composites are the current best option for decay, as they are constantly being improved upon, use less toxic materials, and are more aesthetically pleasing. MYTH, FACTS ABOUT HOSPICE CARE By Paula Sanders One of the challenges that all hospice caregivers face is to help dispel those myths and reassure patients and families about the realities of effective end-of-life care. Consider these mistaken notions about hospice care: Myth: Hospice is a place. Reality: Hospice is not a “place” – it is a philosophy of care that focuses on enhancing people’s comfort and quality of life during their final months of life. Hospice care can be administered at the patient’s home, hospice inpatient units as well as hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living communities or residential care facilities. It includes expert pain management by treating physical symptoms, while providing emotional and spiritual support. Myth: Hospice means giving up. Reality: Hospice care is about life, some of the most important moments in life. Hospice aims to make life as comfortable, enjoyable and meaningful as possible. The care is provided by highly skilled, interdisciplinary teams of palliative care experts, including physicians, nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, bereavement specialists and volunteers. Myth: Hospice care is only for the very old. Reality: People of all ages face death. Whether a patient is young or old, hospice care is customized to meet the patient’s individual needs, focusing on comfort and dignity for the patient and support for loved ones. RUNOFF DECIDES FALL ELECTION MATCHES In the July 22 runoff, Cobb voters elected a Superior Court Judge from Smyrna, a new School Board member and added to the winning totals for a new U.S. Senator. Challenger Susan Thayer won the District 2 School Board runoff over incumbent Tim Stultz by a vote of 3.030 to 1,271. She will face Democrat Kenya Pierre in the fall. Ann Harris of Smyrna, a prosecutor in the District Attorney’s office won the runoff for Cobb Superior Court Judge 30,993 to 19,260 over Juanita Stedman. Cobb voters went for David Perdue for Senate in the Republican primary runoff over Jack Kingston to fill the seat now held by Saxby Chamblis. Perdue will face Michelle Nunn in November. In the Republican State School Superintendent race, Richard Woods won over Mike Buck after a recount. Mableton Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan won Cobb County, but lost statewide to Decatur educator Valarie Wilson in the Democrat State School Superintendent race. Barry Loudermilk of Bartow County took the 11th District U.S. House race over former Rep. Bob Barr. There is no Democrat in the race.

CORA FISHER READY FOR 106TH BIRTHDAY

Cora Elizabeth Hopkins Fisher will celebrate her 106th birthday Aug. 30 at Delmar Gardens. Born in 1908, she has seen many things most of us only read about in history books. She has lived through major wars, assassinations of political leaders, the invention of the radio, telephone, television, internet, just to name a few during her 106 years. Fisher grew up in the Grant Park neighborhood in metro Atlanta and worked as a cashier for the Georgia School System. Fisher who was married for 68 years to Herbert Hartsfield Fisher, was the youngest of four siblings. Although she never had children, Fisher enjoyed spoiling her nieces and nephews. As a resident of Delmar Gardens of Smyrna since 2002, Fisher has enjoyed many activities, but her favorite thing is watching the Andy Griffith Show and religious programs on TV. According to Monet Washington, Activity Director at Delmar Gardens, “Mrs. Fisher is a charming and loving resident, who participates in the many events at Delmar Gardens. Her favorite color is pink which you can clearly tell from her clothes.

She wears pink almost every day.” Residents, staff, family and friends will be on hand to celebrate Fisher’s 106th birthday at Delmar Gardens, complete with champagne and birthday cake.

The Smyrna Little League 10/11 Year-Old All Star Team won the Georgia Little League State Championship on July 16, claiming the first State Title for this age group in the organization’s 60-year history. To accomplish this feat, the team won their third straight District 2 tournament held at Murphey Candler Park in Dunwoody in early July. The team then competed in the state tournament held in Cartersville with victories over 4 teams including perennial Georgia powerhouses Warner Robins East in the semi-finals and Northern Columbus in the finals. Smyrna won the state championship game 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth with a force out at second base. Smyrna Little League President, Jodi Rutigliano, who also has a son on the team, shared “that this is such an amazing accomplishment for our team, our park and community. It would not have happened without the hard work of our boys and coaches, and the dedication of our parents and the entire Smyrna Little League family.” Smyrna will go on to represent the state of Georgia at the Southeast Regionals, the highest level of Little League competition for their age, in Greenville, NC, beginning Aug. 2.
