Cobb fans reacted positively to the Braves’ new home at SunTrust Park and even report that the expected traffic problems are less than expected. “The traffic Armageddon didn’t happen as people had predicted,” said District 2 Commission Bob Ott. “It took me just 11 to 15 minutes to get there from my house.” The ballpark and The Battery drew praise from those who attended the opening game on April 14 as the Braves beat the San Diego Padres 5 to 2. There was a full house on opening night with 41,149 tickets sold. “The excitement and energy in the Battery was palpable,” said Jodi A. Miller, a Vinings lawyer. “Of course it was the grand opening, but it looks like it's going to be everything Cobb County and the Braves hoped it would be. Well done, Cobb County! Welcome home Braves!” MaryJane LeCroy of Smyrna is a season ticket holder and was impressed. “We thoroughly enjoyed SunTrust Park during opening weekend,” she said. “The ballpark itself has a more intimate feeling with great views. Food and beverage choices are abundant and go far beyond the standard hot dogs, peanuts and Coke. There certainly is something for everyone.” Ceremonies marked the opening game with nods to the players who have had their numbers retired, a presentation of Jerseys from Braves top staff to County Commissioners and even a military jet flyover. The first pitch was trown by Hank Aaron to Bobby Cox, just as they had done to close out the team’s run at The Ted. Traffic was on the minds of fans and officials before and after the game. Even The Governor chimed in. “You can get there without any real problem, Gov. Nathan Deal said. “We didn’t even have to use the blue lights.” “So far, there have been no major traffic problems caused by Braves traffic,” said Ron Sifen of Vinings. “There have been some localized spots on Circle 75 Parkway, Windy Ridge Parkway, and Interstate North Parkway where traffic can back up perhaps Continued on Page 4

What was expected to be a quick, decisive war became a long and costly stalemate, where millions died or were wounded. The United States joined the fight on April 6, 1917. WWI finally ended at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. More than 21 million had died; 11,700 of whom were Americans. Another 21 million from all nations were wounded.

ART AT THE FOUNTAIN

Patrons at the Spring Jonquil Festival in Smyrna had the opportunity to paint portions of a community mural that will be assembled and placed in the Community Center. FACT:

85% of core brain structure is developed by age four.

By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher May is the month for celebrating both Mother’s Day and Mental Health Month. There should be a tie in with the two. Several things come to mind. One: how many people have been in therapy discussing issues with their mothers. Is this just a myth from television movies and sit-coms or reality? I rather think it’s more the latter. Two: motherhood can bring on depression. The famous post-partum blues are definitely a reality for many moms. A trained physician may be needed to bring back the good mental health. Three: the joy of motherhood can bring joy that aids in good mental health. Motherhood is a life-long job. It’s one of the toughest jobs on earth. For most moms it means lack of sleep and worry about another person. It can mean skipped meals making sure little ones are fed and forsaking new wardrobes to cloth constantly growing children. There’s no such thing as a perfect mother. Mothers come in all shapes and sizes, all temperaments, and educational levels. Mothers bring their own childhood baggage to the role and there is no training that can prepare a mother for all the challenges that will come her way. Here is a snapshot of three mothers who have overcome challenges. One, in order to bond with her son, took him on a weeklong hike along the Appalachian Trail. She wasn’t a hiker, but set out, determined to help him and create a bond between the two of them. It took almost the entire week to begin to reach that bonding, but she persisted. She continues to climb the trail, sometimes with her son, sometimes with friends and soon will have climbed the entire Appalachian. Another mother, an extended family member, has a young son with severe disabilities from a genetic syndrome. He has seen almost more days at Children’s Healthcare than at home. Finishing law school just before her son was born; she passed the bar and put her career on hold, devoting her time to her sons, a second child born without the genetic disabilities. Fortunately, she has an incredible support system with her husband and parents. Her life is centered on her children and she is an amazing mother.

A third mother, one we interviewed for our media client, Cobb and Douglas Community Services Boards, told her story of meth addiction, and how she was in danger of losing her children. Her story is one of many similar stories that we have heard from clients at “Mothers Making a Change.” This mother, not quite 21, already had three children and an addiction that was ruling her life, and it took the loss of her children and a court order to compel her to seek help. When we interviewed her, she was in recovery, had her children back in her custody and had turned her life around. Motherhood is a destination and a journey. Once the child is yours, you have reached the motherhood destination. You have the title, “mother”, and it’s yours to enjoy. And, at the same time, your journey as a mother has just begun. It will take you down roads untraveled. You will walk with other mothers on the same journey, yet have your own adventures; your own challenges and joys.

BRAVES' OPENING DAY A HIT WITH FANS

Continued from Page 1 a tenth of a mile. The interstates and arterials such as Cobb Parkway have not experienced backups due to anything related to the Braves.” “Many predicted the Cumberland area would be a bad location, and there was not much transit, and traffic would be much worse than traffic at Turner Field. Braves traffic at Turner Field used to back up I-75 for miles, and traffic around the stadium was terrible. So far, the Cobb County location is proving to be a superior location, and is causing dramatically less traffic problems than the downtown Atlanta location.” Fans packed the Cumberland Connector bus that ran a loop from the Cumberland Transit Station to the ballpark. Many had gotten on at the MARTA Arts Center Station and caught the CobbLinc bus. Bruce LaBudde of Smyrna caught the Cumberland Connector on Cobb Parkway to the Battery. “It was fabulous,” he said, noting that he had a long history of Braves games. “I went to the Braves’ opening game in Atlanta with my dad in 1966.” Ms. Miller said that she was proven wrong about Braves traffic. “I just couldn't see how it could work

successfully,” she posted on Facebook. “I could not believe how smoothly traffic moved around the stadium (in the opener). At 5:30 the Windy Hill and SunTrust Park exits were clear and moving well. In fact, you hardly would have noticed that there was a home game.”

Russ Lutterbie and Rhenna Rice attend the opening game, decked out in their Braves' jerseys .

FORTIS COLLEGE SETS OPEN HOUSE AT NEW SMYRNA CAMPUS

Fortis College in Smyrna is having a party…and Atlanta is invited to attend. On Wednesday, May 17, Fortis College-Smyrna at 2140 South Cobb Drive, is hosting its Spring Festival and Grand Open House from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for its day students, and from 6-8 p.m. for evening students. The event, which is being held inside the campus building and in the parking lot, will include arts & crafts, games, food, live entertainment, a raffle…and more. Atlanta’s #1 Hit Music Station – Power 96.1 (WWPW-FM) – kicks things off from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. with a radio remote featuring station personalities, deejays and, of course, the top music hits. There’ll also be a Corn Hole contest and other tailgate games, life-sized block-stacking Jenga, a cook-out with tasty food from the grill, ice cream, popcorn machine, photo booth and many more fun activities. Highlights will include an outdoor version of “Family Feud” from 12-1 p.m., that will be repeated from 6:30-7:30 p.m. during the evening session, and a dunk tank to “Sink the Campus President.” A donation of a non-perishable or canned food item to benefit Must Ministries gives attendees an opportunity to help others and a chance to soak the school’s administrator. Also on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fortis Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students and staff are partnering with area daycare centers and a local elementary/middle school to provide no-cost dental screenings; the Medical Assisting Department will offer no-cost health screenings; and the campus Welding and HVAC programs will conduct equipment demonstrations. Welding students also will display metal works of art they’ve created. The school’s EMS Department will have a fire truck on display, an ambulance that guests can hop inside and check out, and a Cadaver Lab inside the campus that’s sure to spark interest. (It may sound gross, but it’s actually quite interesting.) It will be a healthy, enlightening, and fun day for students, staff, kids and community residents. The Fortis College Spring Festival and Grand Open House may be the first opportunity for community residents to tour the school’s new campus, which opened last fall in Cobb Center adjacent to the International Academy of Smyrna. In their new setting, students and staff enjoy classrooms designed to enhance learning, updated laboratories with the latest equipment and healthcare technology, and a brand new Dental Clinic where students and staff provide no-charge or discounted services to the community.

A 2004 Campbell High School graduate and Atlanta native is serving aboard the homeport for U.S. Atlantic Fleet’s ballistic missile nuclear submarines. Petty Officer 2nd Class Carolyn Deacon, an electronics technician, is responsible for all official naval communications to and from the sub base. “I like that I get to interact with a lot of people,” said Deacon. “I am a people person so I like getting to see and talk to people from all over the base.” The mission at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay near St. Marys, Ga., is to provide support to the fleet, fighter and family, according to Navy officials. It is the state-ofthe-art home to the Atlantic Fleet's Trident submarines and serves as an integral part of the nation's strategic deterrence program. The Navy’s ballistic missile submarines, often referred to as “boomers,” serve as undetectable launch platforms for ballistic missiles. They are designed specifically for stealth, extended patrols and the precise delivery of missiles, and they are the only survivable leg of the nation’s strategic nuclear forces, which also include landbased missiles and aircraft. The Ohio-class design allows the submarines to operate for 15 or more years between major overhauls. Deacon and other sailors know they are part of a legacy supporting the Navy’s most advanced submarines. "We demand the highest standards from our sailors - both professionally and personally," said Rear Adm. Randy Crites, commander, Submarine Group 10 in Kings Bay. “Their chain of command, family and our great nation take immense pride in their devotion and service. These sailors are absolutely crucial to ensuring our ships and submarines are operating at their best - always mission ready, providing our nation with the greatest Navy the world has ever known. I'm so very proud these sailors are on our team." “I like how working here has expanded my horizons,” said Deacon. “It has given me the opportunity for self and professional growth.” Serving in the Navy, Deacon is learning about leadership and managing multiple responsibilities. “Serving in the Navy has given me a chance to see the country and the opportunity to experience different cultures from all over the world,” said Deacon.

GARDENS READY FOR 9TH ANNUAL KEEP SMYRNA BEAUTIFUL GARDEN TOUR MAY 20 Don’t miss the 9th annual Keep Smyrna Beautiful Garden tour on May 20, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The tour features five beautiful private gardens, the lovely Smyrna Elementary School garden, the Tea Room at the historic Taylor–Brawner House, and a plant sale. Tickets are on sale in advance at Neighbors Feed and Seed, Love Street, Vickery Hardware, the Bird and the Bee, the Community Center, and the Recycling Center. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the tour at the Taylor-Brawner House. The Tea Room will feature live music, delicious refreshments, a fabulous plant sale and a chance to visit with great local garden resources. The Charyn Darby Foundation is again the Presenting Sponsor for the tour. Tour proceeds will go for projects in our local schools for beautification, environmental education and enhancing outdoor learning. The gardens this year offer a variety of ideas for creative and beautiful solutions to many common garden problems. They range from totally “do-it-yourself ‘to professionally-assisted. The Tour is educational in nature and gardeners are eager to share what they have learned to help others. Artists will be painting in several of the gardens, and volunteers will be on hand to help answer questions. The tour can be done in 2-3 hours or longer depending on your pace. The goals of the Tour are to showcase the beautiful gardens in Smyrna and to provide an enjoyable and educational day in the outdoors that benefits our entire community! Some of the the gardens include: Amy and Harry Eubanks moved into a wooded, sloping lot in a new subdivision 20 years ago that presented multiple challenges. With the addition of a stone patio, stone retaining walls, fieldstone steps, and terraced spaces, the landscaped garden has evolved into a beautiful tranquil place. The grounds include hellebores, ferns, daylilies, daffodils, hydrangeas, azaleas, hollies, camellias, gardenias, rhododendrons, Japanese maples, magnolias, and crepe myrtles focusing on year-round color. (Viewing this garden does involve traversing a steep slope. It may not be suitable for everyone.) Jo Miller’s garden is a great example of dealing with a steep yard that slopes toward the back of the house. It is also a collection of plants that she loves. She said, “It has no rhyme or reason. I love blooming flowers. I love lots of color. I love hostas-I have many

Covered and uncovered patios for dining, parties, and relaxing lure all ages. The senses are treated to daffodils, roses, ginger lily, lemon balm, and many other fragrances. The home and landscape of Joni Martin and Ray Vito are four years young...and the garden spaces are evolving. Early spring is the loveliest season for this garden with hundreds of daffodils in the front natural area. Late summer the limelight hydrangeas are a striking feature. Newly planted this year is a collection of David Austin roses in raised beds. The Davis/Hollmuller garden incorporates elements of nature and art into many rooms designed for wonderment and relaxation. The owners have beautifully overcome the problems of slope, drainage, dry areas, and alternating sun and deep shade. The original designs were created by Virginia but were expertly enhanced and finessed by Cole & Company. A pathway canopied by camellias leads you to the deck and another sitting area with a fountain and works from local artist, Christine Sibley. The Smyrna Elementary School Garden features six specially designed raised beds to beautifully optimize learning in a garden setting. Each grade level has a bed with easy access from all sides. The Garden was begun in 2013 and designed by Sean Murphy after being incorporated into the school’s original plans. The work to construct the garden has been done mostly be volunteers, with the funds raised by the Smyrna Elementary Foundation.

COBB'S FOUR-LANE GETS A WELCOME UPGRADE Cobb and state officials celebrated the completion of numerous road- and bridge-widening projects on Cobb Parkway in a ceremony April 26. “This has been many years in the making,” said Malika Rivers, executive director of the Community Improvement District. The two-phase project of road widening from the new bridge over the Chattahoochee River to the Akers Mill Road intersection at Cumberland Mall included adding a lane to a mile long stretch of Cobb Parkway, US 41. When it opened in 1938, US 41 was known as “the four lane” with 37 miles of road in Cobb County as part of the 2,000 mile length of the forerunner to the Interstate, stretching from Michigan to Miami. Today, I-75 carries the bulk of the traffic, but Cobb Parkway is still a busy link for com-

merce and commuting. “This is a major transportation project in the making for more than a decade,” said Gov. Nathan Deal. “Now the four lane is the six lane, adding 50 percent more capacity.” "This is one of the best examples that we have of what partnerships can do between local government, state government and the business community," said Deal. "This project and other projects had a great deal to do with the selection of the Braves to come to Cobb County," Cumberland CID Chairman Tad Leithead said at the April 26 ribbon-cutting. But he dispelled thoughts that the road work was done for the new Braves stadium. “We’ve been working on this project for 17 years,” he said. “The Windy Hill Bridge (over I-75) only took us 29 years.

PHOENIX BOYS ASSOCIATION SEEKS MENTORS The Phoenix Boys Association, a nonprofit organization serving at risk boys, ages 7 to 17, is looking for some mentors. Through programs of scouting and individual mentoring, participants are offered alternatives as they mature. Emphasis is in the areas of health, education, teen employment and juvenile justice. Phoenix, has three chapters, each structured to serve 80 boys, under the direction of a paid chapter leader. One of these chapters operates within the Vinings community and draws boys primarily from the Hollywood Road area. For many years, the group has had the support of a major employer in the area, the Printpack Company. In recent years, other firms have joined the effort along with the Vinings Cumberland Rotary Club. While funding is always a primary goal, a greater challenge is seeking quali-

fied mentors for the boys. A mentor may be either a male or female, but must go through a background check to participate in the program. Those selected as mentors will have the opportunity to meet with their mentee once a week for an hour. To ease the process, youth are brought to the mentoring location after school. Mentoring may take the form of just conversation, homework assistance, problem solving, family issues, health, etc. As the relationship develops, other discussion areas typically surface. “Mentoring is not for everyone, however, if you have an interest, we would like to talk with you,” said Charter Director Terrence Zachary. “Please contact our organization at 404-437-3157. If not, we encourage you to at least take a few moments and visit our web site and learn more about the positive impact that many of your neighbors on having on local youth in the area.”

MOVIE FILMING IN VININGS SPARKS CONFUSION OVER VET’S SIGN

Is a Viking river or ocean cruise on your bucket list? Would you like a personal tour of what makes the Viking experience so special? Come hear why guests rate the unique itineraries and first-class service and accommodations the best value in cruising!

Friday, May 19 Smyrna Community Center 200 Village Green Circle, Rm. 5 Smyrna, GA 30080 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

By Allan Lipsett Editor/Publisher Vinings residents were perplexed when they thought they saw a “Tender Paws Vet” sign going up next door to Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic last month. But it was just a movie, as the Thrive Beyond Fitness building on Mountain Street was a shooting site for two weeks for the movie, “Bastards.” Principal filming was completed in December 2015, but director Lawrence Sher wanted a different ending. So, additional scenes were filed in Vinings and the tiny town of Rutledge in Morgan County. The comedy has a “Mama Mia” style theme of who’s the father? as fraternal twins search for their birth father. The film stars Owen Wilson, Ed Helms, J. K. Simmons, Terry Bradshaw, Ving Rhames, Katt Williams, Retta, June Squibb and Glenn Close. Another beneficiary of the film industry was the Old Vinings Inn which was used to feed crew members. Hunter Hill For Governor Cobb County’s Sen. Hunter Hill (R-6), who has served for the past five years, has announced to run for Governor next year. “After much prayer and consideration, I have decided that I will cast a vision to lead the great state of Georgia,” Hill said. “Now - more than ever – is the time to launch a bold, new vision for Georgia’s future. I have been thinking and praying about this decision for some time, and we are ready. My many years of diverse leadership experience in military combat, business, and politics provides a unique perspective that will guide Georgia to reach its full potential.” Hill is married to Shannan Reese Hill. They are the proud parents of Hunter Bradley Hill, Junior and Annie Christine Hill. The Hills attend Peachtree Presbyterian Church. The combat veteran and two-time bronze star recipient told supporters by email that “We are still in desperate need of conservative leaders who practice what they preach."

for their customers. Kevin Drawe, owner of Atkins Park Tavern in Smyrna, arranged a shuttle to the opening game, stocking the bus with snacks and drinks to handle any length of commute. The bus got to the Park in less than 15 minutes, not enough time to finish a drink, so he had plenty of leftovers. Creatwood Tavern at Belmont runs a shuttle every 15 minutes (except between the 5th and 7th innings to give the driver a break). Just show a receipt from the restaurant. Hotel Indigo also runs a shuttle for guests before and after the games. South Cobb Diner Now Open South Cobb Diner is now open in downtown Austell. Owners Loren and Chad Martin bring the home cooking and fresh vegetables that have made West Cobb Diner a hit with diners to 5850 Love St. near Veterans Memorial Highway. The city of Austell provided a $230,000 economic incentive from Norfolk Southern interest. CAMPBELL HOSTS PEP RALLY FOR BRAVES “I plan on giving this [tomahawk] to my grandfather because he is one of the biggest Braves fans and most humble people I have ever met in my life,” said sophomore Antonio, who waved a red foam tomahawk as he talked. The Braves gave tomahawks to Antonio and other Campbell High School students during an opening week celebration in the school cafeteria April 13. Antonio also planned to tell his grandfather how he played on the drums of the Atlanta Braves Heavy Hitters drumline. “Being on the drumline at Campbell, I was very excited to attempt to play on their drums,” Antonio shared. “I would love to be a member of the Heavy Hitters.” He had a suggestion for the next time the Atlanta Braves visit his school. “I think they [could get] with our band director,” Antonio proposed. “Our drumline could come, and we could surprise [the Heavy Hitters] like they surprised us.” The drumline made memories for other Campbell students too. When the Atlanta Braves asked for volunteers, Campbell senior Mekarrus quickly leaped forward to go up against a member of the Heavy Hitters in a drum competition. “I like the Braves coming in,” Mekarrus said. “It brought a lot of excitement to the day. It really changed my whole mood for the day. They made me have fun.” Mekarrus, who described the Atlanta Braves visit to his school as his favorite memory of the Braves, wants to make the sports team part of his future. “I want to get a job with the [Atlanta Braves],” Mekarrus explained. “They gave a lot of people from my school a job. A lot of kids got jobs.” Antonio’s brother already works for the Atlanta Braves, and senior Journey may explore the possibility of getting a job with the local ball team too. “I’ve been hearing a lot about the Braves because a lot of my friends have been getting jobs [at SunTrust Park],” Journey explained. Journey thinks the Atlanta Braves hiring streak has greatly benefited Campbell students. The Atlanta Braves cafeteria pep rally at Campbell may have increased Journey’s excitement about getting a job herself with the hometown team. “When the [Atlanta Braves] were dancing at first, I was shy, but then they started playing some really good beats, and they were interacting with the students at the same time,” Journey recalled. “I was danc-

Mekarrus drums out the beat with the Braves' "Heavy Hitters." ing and having a good time.” Campbell High special needs students also got into the Atlanta Braves spirit. “As we were leaving [the cafeteria], the drumline procession was right in front of the students. They offered some of our students an opportunity to play [the drums] with the band, and they got very excited,” explained Richard Albury, a Campbell High special education paraprofessional. The special needs students returned to the classroom with tomahawks in hand and enjoyed doing the Atlanta Braves signature tomahawk chop. As part of Throwback Thursday, Campbell students shared their favorite memories of the Atlanta Braves. Their first trips to the ballpark created Antonio’s and Journey’s favorite memories of the Atlanta Braves. Antonio recalled having great seats and keeping the souvenir ice cream cup hat. Journey chuckled as she remembered accidently spilling nachos on another baseball fan as she sat in the stadium. The students are looking forward to making new memories at SunTrust Park. Because his grandmother already has a memento from the construction of the stadium and his grandfather is a huge Atlanta Braves fan, Antonio wants to take his grandparents to watch an Atlanta Braves game.

SELF-SERVICE CHECKOUT AT SMYRNA LIBRARY

Sandi Witlen helps 4-year-old Kendall Tran check out a book on Smyrna Public Library’s multi-function self-service stations in April. From these three stations, customers may check out and renew materials, pay fines, reserve a public computer, and release printouts. The units also allow payment by credit card. ”Smyrna Library installed a self-service station for printing and reserving computers many years ago,” says Mary Wallace Moore, Smyrna Library Director. “So additional features like checking out and paying fines was a natural progression our customers have requested for some time.” The “OneStop” self-service units are the product of Georgia-based Envisionware, Inc. Two units are located at the front desk on the first floor. An additional unit is located upstairs next to the adult computer lab. “These new service options enhance customer service in two ways. Some customers prefer to help themselves, and we’re glad to offer them an option that makes them more comfortable.” Moore adds, “But the addition of self-service also allows our staff to provide in-depth service to customers who need extra attention. Staffers won’t feel guilty about stepping away from the desk to walk a customer right to the resource they need.”
