‘NEW LOOK’ A PART OF NEW YEAR AT PEBBLEBROOK

POWDER SPRINGS ADDS DEFIBRILLATORS TO POLICE VEHICLES

The Powder Springs Police has equipped each uniform patrol vehicle with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), according to Matt Boyd, Deputy Chief of Police. A total of 20 units have been allotted for patrol vehicles and two units have been mounted inside the police department. One is mounted in the lobby and the other is mounted in a secured common area. This is in part with the City’s project to equip each City building with an AED. Puckett EMS sponsored training in the use of the AED to our police officers. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

”The WellStar Cobb Hospital VolunTeen program is designed to provide students interested in healthcare careers access to the operations of a world-class hospital,” said Lori Campbell, Manager of Volunteer Services at WellStar Cobb Hospital. “VolunTeens provide hundreds of hours of valuable service to our patients, families and team members, while gaining valuable experience that may lead to a future career in healthcare.” During their six weeks at the hospital, the students do a variety of jobs from assisting visitors, helping patients with discharge procedures, being an extra pair of hands for the staff in both clinical and nonclinical areas and even working in the lab. Monisha Kaleekal of Austell, now a WellStar nurse, began her career being a VolunTeen at Cobb Hospital. “I volunteered during my summer breaks in high school throughout various departments which enabled me to view various roles that each professional had in providing care,” she said. “The experience provided me with a sense of self-satisfaction and gratitude which facilitated in choosing my future profession as a Registered Nurse (RN).” She is working on her Master’s to become a Nurse Practitioner. “I will forever be grateful to the VolunTeen group that provided me with this opportunity and assisted in choosing my career path and goal,” she said. Fawzaieh Osman, a senior at South Cobb High School, has plans to be a nurse. “I am learning how the hospital works and finding out what department I like working in. I like the labor and delivery and I am

getting to interact with other people.” Marie Ow, of Austell is a Junior at North Cobb High School in its magnet program. “I want to be a biomechanical engineer,” she said. She is working in the phlebotomy department and learning about the equipment. “I like helping other people and I like to help make people smile,” she said. “I’m happy that I’m helping them. I learned new things each time I come here.” Zainab Molumo is a sophomore at South Cobb High, is in the magnet program, The Academy of Research and Medical Science. “I want to pursue a career in medical science. It will give me a jump start on my career,” she said. “I like the atmosphere of a hospital.” She is working in the women’s center doing filing and putting together packages for moms with new babies. It’s the start of a new school year — and a New Look —for students of Pebblebrook High School. The class of 2019 was kicked off today with the launch of the Academies of Pebblebrook, a new brand of education that engages every student with a choice, and a path to college or career – or both. To initiate its shift in academic and community focus, the Cobb County School District is partnering with Usher’s New Look, Inc., a 501(c) (3) charity founded by singer and performer, Usher Raymond in 1999 in Atlanta. Every freshman will participate in his New Look Program, “Powered by Service.” Over the past 16 years Usher’s New Look has engaged more than 24,000 youth in cities across the U.S. to become more personally involved in their futures by participating in community service projects and community-building activities. “The New Look model is unique. Think of us as a youth leadership incubator cultivating the next wave of change makers in the Cobb Community. By week’s end, over 600 youth will receive leadership certification backed by Emory University’s Goizueta Business School with a charge to begin serving within their local communities,” said Yvette Cook, New Look President and CEO. “We want to inspire a renewed passion for learning, and a sense of possibility and purpose among our students, their teachers, parents and the entire community,” says Chief Academic Officer, Mary Elizabeth Davis. “This approach gives every student choices about their future. We’re saying, ‘We believe in you. We know your future has no limits.” With the launch of the Academies of Pebblebrook, all non-magnet members of the class of 2019 will choose from two distinct areas of study: The Academy for Creative Studies and the Academy for Global Service. The new academies echo the goal-based approach created by The Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts, which has been at Pebblebrook High School since 1983. The Academy for Creative Studies includes focused content in the fields of Continued on Page 3

Comments By Cathy SHARKS, DANGERS, AND WORRIES WON’T SPOIL OUR SUMMER FUN By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher Nostalgia! When you reach a certain age, there is a lot to look back on, remembering the “good old days, when life was simpler, neighborhoods were safer, and there were fewer rules and regulations governing our lives. But there is a lot to be said for new and improved. This hit home at the end of July when we realized that our downstairs home air conditioner was not producing cool air. To put it bluntly, our house was hot and our electric bill was sky-high. We couldn’t go on living that way, especially since we do our newspaper production and writing from our home office. It’s hard to think and to write and to produce when sweltering. Okay, maybe it wasn’t that hot; but it was pretty unpleasant. Let’s face it, this has been a very warm summer. Finally, we broke down and called a repairman, ending up replacing our air conditioners and the 26 year old miracle furnace that was certainly due to fail on us in the upcoming winter. With this taken care of, we are now functioning much better. As we were going through all of this, however, Allan and I began to wonder how we survived our childhoods. As young children, neither of us had air-conditioned homes or cars. We “rolled” the windows down in the car for air and turned on fans and opened windows in the house. We played outside; sat on porches, especially in the evenings; went to the neighborhood pool; and didn’t forsee that as young adults our lives would be much cooler. We left the windows open and often the doors unlocked even when we went out, concerned only that it might rain while we were away. We rode in cars without seat belts and car seats. We weren’t necessarily as safe as today. There is good reason for the seat belts, air bags and car seats. Now we keep the windows closed and the air conditioner on; and the doors locked and the alarm on even when inside the house and car. I like the modern conveniences such as central air conditioning and heat; I like the safety and luxury of the modern car. I don’t want to go back to the good old days. I appreciate my current grown-up life with the modern conveniences such as central

heat and air, cell phones and computers. However, it is nice occasionally to look back with nostalgia and fond memories: sitting on my grandmother’s screened porch, cool in the summer evening; playing in the park with my neighborhood friends; and enjoying the rain-cooled night after a summer storm.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Carol Mickus, a 7th grade science teacher at Cooper Middle School in Austell, was named Cobb Teacher of the Year for the Middle School level. She was greeted by a team of Cobb Schools’ leaders, including Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, Aug. 26, who broke the news that she is now joining an elite and distinguished group of educators, identified as going above and beyond as teachers and leaders. Dr. Vanessa Watkin, right, Principal at Cooper, congratulates Ms. Mickus.

‘NEW LOOK’ BEGINS NEW YEAR AT PEBBLEBROOK Continued from Page 1 Hospitality, Fine Arts and Instrumental Performance and Arts and Entertainment Leadership, while the Academy for Global Service offers majors in Social Innovation, JROTC, Communications, and Allied Health Science. Each focused area of study provides students with real-world opportunities and problem-solving techniques, so they can apply their knowledge while learning practical business and social skills. “We are investing in the lives and futures of every student,” said Chris Ragsdale, Superintendent of the district. “Pebblebrook can become a beacon for education, as well as a catalyst for community and economic development. Our goal is to strengthen graduation rates and give all students the opportunity to pursue postsecondary training and education.” Ragsdale adds that the partnership with Usher’s New Look is a significant opportunity for the district and, more importantly, for the students of Pebblebrook HS. In addition, Usher’s Music Leadership course will be available for all freshmen. Plans are currently in development to com-

plete the Academy pathways for the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years. “We are pulling out all the stops here,” says Davis. “There is so much potential in each student and in this school. And now we have the innovative tools in place to support students in reaching their goals. The sky’s the limit.” Throughout the week, Usher’s New Look will conduct trainings around the organization’s four pillars—talent, education, career and service. The pillars reflect the guiding principles embraced by Pebblebrook within its new academic structure. All incoming Pebblebrook freshman will participate in Powered By Service as a part of this year’s “freshman experience”. As part of the Academies at Pebblebrook kick-off, artist Lindsay Ryden, a volunteer with Paint Love, will be on campus all week helping students create a mural inspired by Pebblebrook’s new motto of “Believe You Can.” Gregg Street from V103 and comedian Rickey Smiley will also be on hand to engage students as they learn about the school’s new academic approach.
