Georgia Kiwanis members gathered to unveil a new $75,000 playground at the Mableton Boys and Girls Club May 2. Local Kiwanis members and District Governor Jimmy McCorlew joined the dedication, and opened it for the children to play on. The Georgia District of Kiwanis selected the Mableton Boys and Girls club because while it had an outside space to play, it did not have a playground structure. “The Playground project fits perfectly with the objectives of the Kiwanis Clubs of the Georgia District to reach kids for a positive impact,” said Henry Lust, Greater South Cobb Kiwanis President and owner of the Tutoring Center of Powder Springs. Kiwanis clubs raised the money to celebrate the service club’s 100th anniversary with support from Kiwanis International Foundation and KA Boom to build the playground from Landscape Structures Inc. It is one of 12 given around the world in celebration of Kiwanis International’s 100 years of “serving the children of the world.” Photo courtesy Herschel Chalk, Kiwanis Club of Greater South Cobb.

By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher Is there a female anywhere who looks to her future and thinks: “my goal is to be the queen of endless laundry; or “I’ll be the best diaper-changer ever”; or “I won’t need sleep except for an hour or two at a time.” What female in her youth dreams of how she will heal boo boos and mediate fights and build forts in her formal dining room? Did she imagine that a big night with her husband would be falling asleep together in front of the television because the baby is finally sleeping? And did she imagine the pure bliss when a toddler looks at her and says, “I love you?” All of this joys and tiredness of motherhood (parenthood) came back to me as Allan and I had the privilege of staying for several days with our two Virginia granddaughters. Their parents had definitely earned a short trip to the Kentucky Derby and we were honored to be trusted to stay with the girls. We were warned that 1-year-old Harper sometimes wakes in the night, but her waking with croup was scary. And the thunderstorm that rattled the windows left 3-year-old Lilly Bell frightened and in need of lengthy comforting right at dinner time. We had forgotten the painful tiredness that goes with caring for toddlers. But we had also forgotten the incredible cuteness and loving that goes with being in the company of toddlers. And we treasured the pure bliss of Lilly Bell’s sweet “I love you” and Harper’s gentle hugs.Living so far from the girls, and from our Charlotte granddaughters, we have missed out on the day to day fun, excitement and joys that go with interacting on a daily basis. Watching them play with their dolls and toys, reading books, having meals together, and tucking them into bed were all special moments. Yes, we have enjoyed some of this on our earlier trips to their homes, but there is something special about being the sole caregivers without their parents to fall back on. Our recent days with our granddaughters in Springfield, Virginia, reminded us that parenthood is really hard work. And it reminded us of what great parents our own children have become. Parenthood will always be the most rewarding work that we have ever done. On this trip, we kissed booboos, played in the park, read lots of books, sang songs, said prayers, brushed teeth, gave baths, changed diapers, rocked, and cooked child-approved meals (includ-

ing broccoli which neither of us care for). And we took naps (and it wasn’t just the children napping). We came home with bad cold, sore muscles, and a definite longing to go back and be with the girls again. I can understand why so many grandparents are moving to be near their grandchildren. That’s not an option for us, but we definitely need more trips to Virginia and Charlotte to be with our granddaughters.

WellStar will break ground on its Vinings Health Center late this year, Reynold Jennings, WellStar CEO told the Vinings Business Association. “We will start construction in December on the Vinings Health Park,” he said at the May 5 meeting. The WellStar Vinings Health Park, on 25 acres of property bordering I-285 to the east, Atlanta Road on the south and Cumberland Parkway on the north, will feature a 162,000 square foot outpatient facility

FLEX BUS IS A TRANSIT INNOVATION By Tim Lee Cobb Commission Chairman Cobb County isn’t the kind of community that does things the same way because “it’s how we’ve always done things.” There’s evidence all over the county that demonstrates how innovative we are, especially when it comes to transportation. Our airport just got a new control tower, and it’s preparing for international flights with work on a new customs-inspection facility. Two diamond interchanges, which significantly ease traffic congestion, are under construction at Windy Hill and Wade Green roads. And, the Cobb County Department of Transportation uses the latest technology to monitor traffic time so that drivers in Cobb can make informed decisions about their planned routes. Now, Cobb is at it again with another transportation-related innovation. It’s called FLEX, and it’s sponsored by our local DOT and Cobb Community Transit as a means of enhanced and costeffective transportation for specific target areas. FLEX provides alternative transportation to all passengers within three zones in the Powder Springs and Austell areas, and even connects them to the CCT’s local Route 30. What’s unique about FLEX is that you can get curb-to-curb service by making a reservation anywhere from 2 to 24 hours in advance, or you can simply board a FLEX bus at a designated collection point. The methods of payment are flexible, too; you can pay using cash, a BREEZE card, or a magnetic-stripe ticket. FLEX demonstrates how we in Cobb County come together to identify problems in the area that need solutions, and address them quickly. In South Cobb, we identified the need for the kind of transportation service that fixed-route transit just couldn’t provide. FLEX fills a gap to increase connectivity to employment centers, among other things. FLEX is the first service of its kind in Cobb County, or the entire greater Atlanta region for that matter, and it exemplifies what we’re all about in Cobb County doing things differently. And once again, it gives us all a reason to love Cobb County. If you love it too, then don’t forget to tweet on Twitter or post to Facebook, #iLoveCobb.

Tumors have nowhere to hide Patients now have somewhere to turn The future of cancer treatment is here. And it’s only available at WellStar. WellStar is the only health system in metro Atlanta to offer TomoTherapy® and CyberKnife® for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.

TomoTherapy

CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System

Unlike conventional systems, which allow radiation to be delivered from only a few directions, TomoTherapy rotates in 360 degrees, meaning that treatments can be delivered continuously to the tumor from every angle. More beam directions give physicians more control in how they plan treatments – and more assurance that the dose will be confined to the tumor.

The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System involves no cutting, and for many, can offer a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of tumors. The system is composed of a radiation delivery device, which is mounted on a flexible robotic arm which enables CyberKnife to deliver radiation to tumors anywhere in the body. Its exceptional tracking ability eliminates the need for patients to have stabilizing head frames or limited breathing during treatment.

APRIL IS BUSY MONTH FOR SOUTH COBB LIONS

Lion Roberta Green, Executive Director of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc., was guest speaker for the South Cobb Lions April 6, meeting. April is a very busy month at the Lighthouse preparing for the Night of Spectacles and White Cane Day. On April 20, induction of new members Frank Osukoya and Danielle Adair was conducted by Past District Governor 18E Max Gallman of Griffin Lions Club. Guest Speaker was Lion President Claudette Gallman, President of Griffin Club, on ways to recruit new members into Lions Club. The South Cobb Lion Members were out on April 18 collecting funds for WHITE CANE DAY. The community donated more than $1,000 dollars to WHITE CANE. South Cobb Lions members wish to thank the community for their great support and note that these funds go directly to Lions Lighthouse to be used for eye surgery for those in need. The Lighthouse receives reduced rates and services from the medical facilities and Doctors, therefore getting $5 of service for each $1 donated. The club food drive was held with cans of food being donated to Mableton First Baptist food pantry. The South Cobb Lions Club members took part in Adopt a Mile program of Cobb County, led by Lion Barry Krebs, cleaning up some other unsightly areas in South Cobb. The club has had a very successful year under the leadership of President Carol Fox. The successful BBQ in October, Pecan sales in November and December, percentage off cards at local merchants

and community donations to the WHITE CANE DRIVE through the bucket drive and mail outs to friends of South Cobb Lions has allowed the club to make numerous donations to community causes. South Cobb Lions Club has donated to Lions Club International Foundation, Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind, South Eastern Guide Dog and Leader Dog of Michigan, Learning Ally, Vision Services and Sweetwater Mission. Donation of time to serve at nursing homes, help with eye screening test at schools and in the community, Eye clinic’s with Dr. Brian Saunders. Lions Lighthouse staff and South Cobb Club Members. Anyone wishing to become a Lion Member, is welcome to come and visit. The club meets the first and third Mondays of each month, 6:30 p.m. at South Cobb Community Center 620 Lions Club Drive, SW Mableton.
