ARTS GROUP UNVEILS NEW LOGO

BETHANY UMC TO CELEBRATE 100TH

Bethany United Methodist Church, the friendly church at the crossroads of 760 Hurt Road, Smyrna, will celebrate its 100th Anniversary with a special celebration service April 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary followed by lunch. Dr. Gil Watson, pastor of Northside UMC in Atlanta will be the speaker. Dr. Watson grew up in Bethany and went on to pastor churches in the North Georgia Conference. Several former ministers also plan to attend, and there will be special music provided by the Chancel Choir, Praise Band and a Reunion Choir. Bethany was founded in 1915 in the

Grove Park community of northwest Atlanta where it grew and flourished until 1965 when many of its families were moving to the Cobb County area. At that time the members voted to relocate the church to the property located at the corner of Hicks and Hurt Roads in Smyrna. The church has grown in membership and has expanded its facilities and ministries during the 50 years in Smyrna. Its mission is “To reach out, Make and Nurture Disciples for Jesus Christ.” The current pastor is Dr. Susan Taylor and the Associate is Reverend Pam McCurdy.

The South Cobb Arts Alliance (SCAA) announced this month that it is launching a new look and logo for the organization celebrating its 43rd year of promoting the arts in South Cobb. The South Cobb Arts Alliance has a rich history with a great focus on visual arts, performing arts and local heritage. The SCAA is a non-profit organization working hand-in-hand with Cobb County Parks and Recreation and Cultural Affairs Departments to support the facilities and programs on The Historic Mable House complex. On why the desire to update the logo, Slade Gulledge, President of the SCAA stated, “There is such a great focus on the South Cobb area right now with a renewed vigor for redevelopment and we are very excited about that. We are an arts organization and we wanted to have a logo and look that had movement, imagination and reflected the arts.” On the future goals for the SCAA, he further stated, “the SCAA wants to play an even more prominent role going forward

FARMERS MARKET IS RETURNING IN MAY May is just around the corner and that means the Mableton Farmers Market will be returning for its sixth season at the Mable House Complex at 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton. Opening day is set for Thursday, May 28 and Market days will be every Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., through Aug. 27. Nearly all of last season’s farmers and vendors will be returning and a few new ones will be there as well. Visitors will also see food preparation demonstrations and other activities are being planned. More information will be provided as planning continues. The Mableton Farmers Market is a community project of the Mableton Improvement Coalition (MIC). The Mableton Farmers Market is a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) retailer again. Customers with SNAP (formerly Food Stamps) EBT cards will be able to purchase eligible food items. Wholesome Wave Georgia, a privately funded non-profit organization doubles the value of each SNAP purchase at the Market up to $50 per market day. The Cobb County P.A.R.K.S. Department staff hosts and supports the Market and the County Extension Services provide the healthy food preparation demonstrations.

Comments By Cathy SPRING UPLIFTING EXCEPT FOR THOSE WITH DEPRESSION By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher It’s spring and the endless cold and dreary of this winter has finally yielded to warm weather, chasing away the gloom. But for some, the gloom of winter is a gloom of the soul, a debilitating illness that the sights of spring cannot dispel. For these individuals, the diagnosis is depression, a serious illness that can be treated. The April European air crash with a focus on the diagnosis of depression by the co-pilot has brought this disease to the forefront of our consciousness. This is an excellent time for all of us to pay attention to our own mental health. If you have not known someone with a mental health disorder, it may be surprising that so many individuals suffer from depression and other mental health disorders. For me, my first knowledge of someone with a mental health illness was my cousin, who received a mental health diagnosis many years ago. “I feel depressed!” Most everyone has said that at some time or another. We use the term to mean sad, not happy, a little down and out. But for many individuals, adults and adolescents, depression is more than a brief occurrence. It is a very real, serious clinical disorder that can be treated with positive life changing results. One of the most common mental illnesses, clinical depression, affects more than 19 million Americans each year. Depression occurs in people of any age, any race or ethnic group. Experts tell us that depression is never a normal part of life. It can cause people to lose pleasure in their daily life and even lead to suicide. The good news is that depression, and other mental health disorders, are treatable. Treatment for depression includes antidepressant medication, psychotherapy or a combination. The main thing is to seek treatment. Symptoms of clinical depression include: persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood; sleeping too much or too little; middle of the night or early morning waking; reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased appetite and weight gain; or loss of pleasure and interest in activities once enjoyed. Other symptoms include restlessness; irritability; persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment (such as chronic pain or digestive disorders); difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions; fatigue or loss of energy; feeling guilty, hopeless or worth-

less; and thoughts of suicide or death. Experts tell us that having five or more of these symptoms for two weeks or more could signal clinical depression. Good health includes good mental health. I have been fortunate to become knowledgeable about mental health issues through our media work with the Cobb Community Services Board (CSB) and other CSBs statewide. The CSBs are leaders in diagnosing and treating mental disorders. They are the safety net for Georgians who need assistance with mental health care but who may not have the funds or insurance for a private doctor. Yet, in Georgia and throughout our country, the budgets are lean and growing learner to provide for the treatment of mental health disorders. WELLSTAR’S ‘MENDED HEARTS’ SEEKS VOLUNTEERS “We are back” Mended Hearts members are happy to return as volunteers making visits to cardiac patients at WellStar Cobb Hospital. We have received a very warm welcome by each department and look forward to working with all that need us. Mended Hearts was started more than 50 years ago and is a nationwide volunteer group visiting thousands of patients each year. To become a Mended Hearts Volunteer, we must first have a history of having a heart procedure. This ensures to the patients that we understand and have gone through similar circumstance or that we understand because we have been a caregiver of a heart patient. To say it in a simple way we have walked in their shoes. Second, we must go through WellStar Cobb Hospital Volunteer Services program and be accepted as any other volunteer. Next, we have to be accepted by Mended Hearts. We must make at least three visits with an

accredited Volunteer and be approved by the Mended Hearts Board. The contact person we work with each day before visiting patients at WellStar Cobb Hospital is Marie Thomas-Stanley, RN, Cardiac Educator. Marie will give us the list of patients to visit that day. There are times when the nurses on the floor may ask us to visit additional patients who they know may need an encouraging word from a Mended Hearts Volunteer. Currently we visit on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. With just four accredited volunteers and two of them already volunteering other days of the week it sometimes makes it hard to cover the three days. As with all volunteer groups, we are always in need of additional volunteers. The Whitefield Academy K-3 chess team took second place in their division at the Georgia Chess K-8 State Team Championship on Saturday, March 21. Seventy teams from across the state of Georgia were invited to compete in the event, based on their finish in the metro-Atlanta qualifier in February where Whitefield placed first in a field of over 40 schools. The five-round tournament included 24 teams in the K-3 section. Whitefield won its first round easily with a match score of 5-0, winning on all five boards. In the second round, the team suffered a narrow defeat with two wins and three losses. Rebounding well, the players won every game, moving forward in the next round to accumulate four match points. The team finished with 22 wins in 25 games, four more than any other school. The all-third grade team included Drew Justice and Efetobo Aror, who each finished with a perfect 5-0 score, and Walker Paxton, Christian Wiggins, and Archer McBride who each came away with four wins.

Clay Elementary School’s Gifted Education Specialist Teresa Reddish was named as the recipient of the Mary Frasier Equity & Excellence Award this week by the Georgia Association for Gifted Children. Sarah Kessel, Cobb’s Supervisor of Advanced Learning Programs, said Reddish is an excellent example of what it means to educate and develop exceptional students here in Cobb. “Teresa is an inspirational educator who is devoted to developing talent within her gifted students and the children of Clay Elementary School,” she said. “She serves as a mentor for other gifted teachers in Area 1 and is a teacher leader in our district.” The award was presented at GAGC’s annual conference. The award is “presented to an organization or individual who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in services to gifted students.”

FLOYD STUDENT ART SHOW AT MABLE HOUSE The creative talents of Floyd Middle School’s Art Program were on display at the Mable House Arts Center in March. The school celebrated opening night of the students’ art exhibit recently. Lisa Collins, Floyd MS Art Instructor, is excited to share the multicultural presentation with the community. The artwork on display represents some of the best work from all grade levels completed this year. The students produced masterpieces celebrating cultural connections (African, Mexican, Australian, India, German, etc.). Animal studies is also a major theme in the student work. Students also unveiled the impressive Ekphrastic art criticism writing assignments from semester one. Floyd’s annual art celebration started more than 20 years ago and is a special

extension of Youth Art Month celebrated throughout the nation. The exhibit runs through April 8.

SOUTH COBB WELCOMES FLEX TRANSIT SERVICE

Last week, county commissioners and dignitaries from the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta Regional Commission and Cobb Transit Advisory Board kicked off an exciting new transit option in south Cobb. FLEX service began Monday, March 23, and runs 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Mondays-Fridays. FLEX buses provide curb-to-curb service to riders who make advanced reservations and also transport walk-up riders at designated collection points. As a hybrid service, it offers both convenience and flexibility in connecting riders with their destinations. FLEX is designed to fill gaps in existing fixed-route service. FLEX operates in three “FLEX zones” in South Cobb: in Austell, Powder Springs and along Powder Springs Road. These zones create access to key destinations, like Cobb Hospital, and provide a critical connection to CCT Route 30, which runs from Marietta to the H.E. Holmes MARTA station. It is open to all riders.

Student leaders from Floyd Middle School take the school’s mission and vision seriously: they engage in “Making a Difference” (mission), and serving as part of “a community of actively engaged lifelong learners who are accountable, productive citizens” (vision). The student leaders brought the school’s 2014-15 theme of being “In Pursuit of Excellence” to life as they served as Pages for Rep. David Wilkerson (D-38). It was an exciting day for the students to visit the floor of the State House of Representatives and witness legislation in action. Eighth grade students were able to see first-hand the connections to their study of state government and the legislative branch. APPLEBY GRADUATES AT LANE COLLEGE

Aaron Appleby, an Austell/Mableton resident, will be graduating from Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., on April 26. Appleby attended Riverside Elementary and Lindley Middle School. He also attended Pebblebrook High School where he played four years of football, two years of baseball and three years of JROTC. He also played four years of football with the NCAA DII at his college and will graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. He is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He will attend Alabama A&M this summer where he will obtain his Master’s degree in Social Service.
