Powder Springs Mayor Al Thurman told residents that it’s time for the city to grow and bring in new development. He noted that over the past two decades, there have been numerous studies. “We’ve studied these things to death. It’s time to get moving.” Nearly 100 people attended the State of the City presentation at the Ford Center on January 24. On the financial side, the mayor said, “In short, the city is in the black.” He asked residents to be sure to make their comments known to elected leaders. “We need you to tell us if we are on the right track,” he said. “We work for the citizens who want to be included in any decisions we make.” He noted that in the past year he has worked to increase openness and communication. The city has increased Town Hall meetings from annually to quarterly. Interim Police Chief Cochran told the crowd that the Bridging the Gap Program begun in 2015 has brought together law enforcement, community officials and faith leaders to work on relations between the police and community. Numerous community events for children have been held. The Citizens and Police Program (CAP) assigns a police officer to a community to be the face for that area. A summer youth program is being planned. The city is partnering with CobbWorks

Powder Springs Mayor Al Thurman talks to the crowd in his State of the City address. to host a job fair to bring business owners and residents together. The Great Promise Partnership is working to prevent dropouts, working through the business ambassador warns. “You asked for more community events,” City Manger Pam Conner said. The city has added a Veterans Day program in addition to the July 4 and Christmas Tree Lighting. Several 5K runs are held on city trails.

BROWN BAG LUNCH WITH ARTISTS The South Cobb Arts Alliance will hold a Brown Bag Business event on Feb. 21 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Mable House Arts Center, 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton. Guests are encouraged to Brown Bag or bring something to share during the lunch hour on Feb 21, with networking beginning at 11:30 a.m. “This the second community/business event as part of the outreach project with or NEA grant,” said SCAA President Sandy Miller. “SCAA sponsors, business members, general business and local community organizations which support the arts, have never met. The goal is for organizations to engage with the community by meeting with others and enjoying the current Members Art Exhibit.” Last fall, the SCAA won a NEA grant for a Shared Community of Art: Reconnecting Artists, Art Educators, Families and Businesses.

NAVAL ACADEMY NOMINEE

Congressman David Scott congratulates Michael James of Powder Springs who attends McEachern High School on his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. James was one of some 29 exceptional students from Georgia’s 13th Congressional District earning nominations to attend one of our nation’s military service academies. The ceremony was held at Brawner Hall in Smyrna on Feb. 4. “This is a very competitive process. It’s an effort of teamwork by the student, teachers and family members,” Rep. Scott said.

By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher It’s a rough time to be a politician, especially if you’re a political candidate who wants to change your mind on an earlier opinion. In this age of instant news, with google and video news clips archived forever, what is said years earlier lives on well past the expiration date. In recent political campaigns much has been made of candidates who have changed their stance on important matters. There is liberal use of sound bites and video clips of previous stands of the candidate or public official. Things said and things done in the past can certainly come back to bite. I personally think it is okay for a political figure or anyone to change their opinion or their thinking on matters of politics, philosophy, religion, or fashion. But, in this age of instant recall, it’s best to consider consequences before speaking. Having been both an elected official and a newspaper publisher, I do a computer search of myself and my family members occasionally to find out what’s out there on me. It’s informative to find out what lives on in cyberspace. The interesting thing is that, every time I search myself, I find some references that I had not seen before. In my last Google search, I found a site from 1994 from the Cobb County Municipal Association Directory with all the Cobb elected officials some with photos and phone numbers. There are judges and legislators, Cobb School Board Members and City Elected officials. Fortunately, the listing for the Marietta Board of Education didn’t include photos. Another interesting find on my self-absorbed search goes back to our time in Kingsland, Ga, when I was a founding board member for the local library. This was a listing from a State site. Don’t worry readers: I’m not going to go over all of my listings. But, if you haven’t tried it, give your name a computer search and see what’s out there. The difficulty comes if you have a very common name that is difficult to narrow down to just one person. But even if you have an unusual name

The Bright Side

like mine, you may very well find that there is more than one person with the same name. Yes, even a name as unusual as “Cathy Lipsett” has more than one listing. There is at least one person with my name in Canada. Not that unusual since my husband, Allan’s, father was from Canada. From FaceBook to Twitter to Linkedin, newspaper stories, television stories, and blogs, photos and words linger for years and years. History is being recorded in new ways for the living and the dead. I can do a google search for my great-grandfather and come up with stories about his heroism in the Civil War. I can do a search for my father, who died in 1986, and come up with stories of his heroism in World War II. Our stories, for better or worse, are recorded in cyberspace and seem to have no expiration date.

Russell Elementary students are on the air at KM4RE amateur radio.

RUSSELL RADIO TEAM PLACES FIRST NATIONALLY

KM4RE Russell Elementary’s amateur radio club, scored a huge success in October, placing first in the nation in the Fall School Club Roundup (SCR) competition in the elementary category. KM4RE’s SCR eight member Team is the only amateur radio club within the county’s 114 schools, the state’s second largest school district. Also known as the DX Roadrunners, the team competed against schools all over the U.S. and Canada. The object of the competition is to accumulate points by making radio contacts. Every contact earns at least one point, but the team earns multipliers according to the number of states, countries, and other school clubs that are contacted. The DX Roadrunners scored a total of 128,904 over the five days of the contest and accumulated a SCR record 492 contacts in 43 states and 6 countries. Their victory unseated perennial amateur radio competition powerhouse, Dresden Elementary in Ohio, who had won the national championship in five of the last six competitions. The team put together a winning strategy that required them to apply their operating skills and their knowledge of which frequencies would be most effective in the dynamic ionospheric conditions on which the operators depend to reflect their signals around the globe. The members of the DX Roadrunners are Alex Brown (KM4WMZ), Cooper Jones (KM4WNA), Isabel Mcleod (KM4YWQ), Arielle Terrell, Jarobie Miller, Zahir Annylus, Jessica Adim, and Javier Peralta. (Licensed operators have their call sign indicated in parentheses after their names.) The team will be competing

again in the Spring SCR in February. KM4RE was formed at Russell Elementary School a little over one year ago with the encouragement of Principal Mrs. Tammy Watson. Students in KM4RE take a course on amateur radio which includes Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations, electronics, electronic safety, and the physics of radio propagation. Students then have the opportunity to take the amateur radio licensing exam to earn their operator’s license from the FCC. To date, five Russell students have earned a technician class amateur radio license and one student has earned the more advanced general class license. The KM4RE operating station is equipped with a Kenwood TS-2000 high frequency transceiver that was purchased for the club by our partner, Pugmire Lincoln-Mercury. With this transceiver and the 65-foot antenna mounted on the school’s lunchroom students have contacted radio operators in places as far away as Ukraine and Namibia. The station is in the process of installing a dual UHF/VHF antenna system on the roof with a tracking system that will enable them to communicate with other operators via satellites in space and to track telemetry from orbiting satellites. The same system will also be able to communicate with astronauts onboard the International Space Station. The club advisor is Chris Laster, a valued staff member of Russell for over 15 years. He recently received the Smyrna Mayor’s Award for his contributions and dedication to education.

Notes On The News MAYBERRY OR MT. PILOT? WHICH DIRECTION FOR POWDER SPRINGS By Allan Lipsett Editor/Publisher Which direction should Powder Springs be heading, Mayberry or uptown, Mt. Pilot? While the towns are fictional, Mayor Al Thurman is hoping to upsize his city. In his State of the City address, Thurman said, “Whether you believe it or not, some people want to keep Powder Springs like the town of Mayberry, but it’s time to move to Mt. Pilot.” Author Loretta Hannon, a Powder Springs resident, took exception to the proposed change, in a letter to the editor urging the citizens to do like Deputy Barney Fife said “Nip it! Nip it in the bud!” She added, “For the Mayberry — I mean the Powder Springs — that we moved here for is about to vanish and be replaced by something far, far less.”

• Spring Road – begun last fall, focuses on guiding redevelopment along Spring Road and identifying appropriate investment projects to improve aesthetics and functionality of this corridor. The $125,000 study focuses on retail, residential, bicycle and pedestrian traffic • South Cobb Drive Corridor Study – This $120,000 study funded by the Atlanta Regional Commission also got underway in the fall. It focuses on transportation along South Cobb Drive. • A Cumberland Overlay study – Funded by the city, this plan “allows us to look at possible high density, more pedestrian traffic, and walkable streets in the area, making it more accessible to those going to Braves games. The study encompasses Cobb Parkway over to Bell Drive, Best Buy and Target on the north side to I-285.

Four Studies Underway In Smyrna Four studies are underway that will set the direction for Smyrna’s growth and development for the next 20 years. A Comprehensive Plan is the overarching guide for the City of Smyrna’s future growth. The other three studies focus on different areas of the city: Spring Road, South Cobb Drive and Cumberland. William Smith, the city’s Economic Development Coordinator, said that residents are invited to tell leaders what Smyrna should look like in 2014 and what are the city’s top opportunities and challenges. The Comprehensive Plan is the biggest, for the whole city and is updated every five years, Smith said. Community meetings on the plan are set for Feb. 16 at Brawner Hall at 6:30 p.m. and March 21, same time, same place. An open house previewing the study will be June 8. The $100,000 plan is funded by the city and should be completed by late summer. More details are available at www. guidesmyrna.com The other studies include:

Mayor On The Mend Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon was back home in time to watch the Super Bowl after a stent repair on his heart. He writes on Facebook: “the Baconator is feeling fine... had a couple of blockages that have been fixed thanks to the folks at Piedmont. Have been at home most of the last week doing what I do best, nothing. Will be back the first of the week.” Would Smyrna Annex? With the Smyrna city limits coming right up to the Braves property on Cobb Parkway, many have wondered if the city would be interested in annexing the new ballpark and mixed use development. While Smyrna has a Cumberland Overlay study underway, Mayor Max Bacon says an unqualified “no” to annexation. “No, no annexation. It wouldn’t cover the costs,” he told a civic group last month. Chronic Headache Pain? The cause of chronic migraines, tension type headaches, and face, jaw, and neck pain could be unbalanced forces in your mouth that affect the muscles of these areas, leading to changes in the chemical and nerve reactions that cause chronic pain.

WHITEFIELD ACADEMY HOSTS CHESS TOURNAMENT Whitefield Academy played host to the 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Chess Tournament on MLK Day, as almost 500 chess players from K-12th grade participated in this annual tournament sponsored by the Georgia Chess Association. Whitefield’s campus was buzzing with activity as players and their parents arrived from all over the metro area to play five rounds of chess in a timed, tournament format. The annual MLK tournament is open to any scholastic player (K-12th), who is a member in good standing with the USCF (United States Chess Federation). It is the largest rated scholastic chess tournament held annually in Georgia. In between the chess rounds, players were able to help with service projects in honor of the memory of Dr. King. Participants packed backpacks with school sup-

plies and toiletry kits for refugees that will be distributed by the organization New American Pathways. The service projects were sponsored by LexisNexis. “We are so pleased to be able to host this tournament for the Georgia Chess Association over the past several years,” said Susan Justice, tournament coordinator and Whitefield Chess Team parent. “Our campus provides an ideal set-up for the day’s activities.” Smyrna area schools participating in the tournament included Teasley, Nickajack, Harmony Leland and King Springs elementary schools, Griffin Middle, St. Benedict’s, and Whitefield Academy. Whitefield’s K-5 and K-3 U400 teams each earned third place trophies in the tournament and Griffin Middle School’s 6-12 U1000 team took first place in its division.
