Matt Brown enters his fourth season as the head coach of the UMKC men’s basketball program. Brown joined the ‘Roos as the eighth head coach in school history on April 12, 2007. In his first three seasons as head coach, Brown has guided UMKC to an 30-63 overall record and has coached four players to allSummit League recognition. Former forward Dane Brumagin was a second team all-league honoree and Reggie Hamilton was an allnewcomer team selection in 2007-08, before Brumagin and Jay Couisnard were honorable mention all-league honorees in 2008-09 and 2009-10, respectively. Couisnard was also chosen to The Summit League all-Newcomer team. In 2009-10, Brown guided the ‘Roos to a 12-18 overall record and a 6-12 mark in Summit League play, as the squad advanced to the to The Summit League Tournament for the second time in three years. UMKC opened the year strong by posting a 6-4 record over its first 10 contests and an 8-6 mark through the first half of the season. Four of the eight victories came on the road, which included a 102-87 victory at Houston Baptist where the team tied the school record for free throw makes (38). In 2008-09, Brown’s squad picked up a pair of early season victories over Missouri Valley Conference foes Wichita State and Bradley. The win over the Shockers was the first for the program in Wichita and it was the second straight in the series over WSU. Two games later, Brown led his squad to a 73-61 win over Bradley in the CBE Classic. It was the first time since 2001-02 and just the third time in school history that UMKC had defeated consecutive MVC opponents in the same season. During his first season on the sidelines, Brown guided the ‘Roos to an 11-21 overall record. He secured the first victory of his head coaching career on Nov. 13 with a 79-75 win over Baker.

Brown’s squad showed flashes of being a potent offensive team in year one, as the squad scored 105 points at Oakland. In addition, his team was was the most prolific three-point shooting squad in school history, finishing with a record 283 three-point field goals and 739 three-point attempts. Off the court, Brown’s players have excelled in the classroom as 10 student-athletes have earned academic all-league honors and five student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. In addition, under Brown’s tutelage, Brumagin became the first UMKC basketball studentathlete to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Brown joined the ‘Roos with an impressive resume, as he led teams to the post season in seven of his 10 years as an assistant coach. He guided squads to three NCAA Tournament and four National Invitational Tournament (NIT) appearances during his stints at Richmond and West Virginia as key member of head coach John Beilein’s staff.

Richmond under Beilein from 1997-2002. Their 1997-98 squad posted a 23-8 overall record and secured an NCAA Tournament berth. Prior to joining Beilein’s staff, Brown spent three years under the tutelage of Billy Donovan at Marshall University and the University of Florida. Serving as an administrative assistant at both universities, Brown handled mailouts to underclassmen and assisted with the dayto-day operations of both programs. Brown started his coaching career at his alma mater, Shippensburg University, as a student assistant. He played for the Red Raiders from 1991-93 after transferring from Northern Kentucky University, where he suited up from 1988-90. Brown received his bachelor of arts degree in history from Shippensburg in 1994. Brown and his wife, Nikki, have six children, Ally, Gabe, Coen, Cade, Conner and Molly, and they reside in Kansas City, Mo.

While in Morgantown, Brown helped the Mountaineers advance to their first Big East Tournament Championship game in 2005, and they carried their momentum to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. A year later, WVU advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 with a 22-11 mark and in 2006-07, with a young squad, West Virginia claimed the NIT Championship, finishing the year with a 27-9 overall record. At WVU, Brown was responsible for the recruitment of student-athletes, as well as serving as the compliance representative for the men’s basketball program.
