Mobile App for Kids Interactive Map Typography Visual Identity Design


Profile Profile I am Alka Rani, final year Graphic Design student. During the four year course I have gone through many assignments to explore various areas of Graphic design such as Logo design, Advertisements, Typography, Comic book, Photography, Conceptualisation and Book design. While doing classroom assignments, I worked on an application for kids and an Interactive map as my design project. And that is when my interest for User Interface Design developed and I decided to do specialization in the same. In the past, I was an intern at Tinkle Comics - Amar Chitra Katha Studio(Mumbai). Stories and conversation fascinates me and forces me to get involved with illustrations. A black pen around, creates an irresistible urge to draw doodles. When I am not busy with my assignments, I go out and click smiles on streets or draw doodles.


Mobile App for Kids As a part of my Design Project, I made a story based mobile application for kids. This app will both educate and entertain the kids. Kids will learn lot by reading the stories and answering the questions at the end of the story.


Design Brief Client: Prof Himadri Ghosh Brief: To create a mobile application for kids Background: There are numbers of applications being introduced every day for kids, either to educate or entertain them. Kids are growing up with more and more technology as more and more parents are discovering that there are fun and educational apps that can not only entertain children, but also help them to learn something new and exciting, sometimes without even realizing it. Target Audience (Primary): Kids Belonging to 4 - 6 age group Able to use smart phone/ tablet - basic knowledge of tapping and swiping Interested in listening/reading stories Curious, enthusiastic, eager to learn (Secondary): Parents Parents who own a smart phone/ tablet Familiar with downloading apps and working with them


Introduction Why Indian Story based app? Stories are a window to the world around us. A child may forget the first TV show he/she watched but will always remember the story of the thirsty crow. There are number of story based applications in market but there are very few good Applications focusing on Indian characters and stories. Since we have a great history and exciting stories like - Jataka tales, Panchatantra, Akbar - Birbal, this app will let the kids will grow up reading and learning the tales coming from their motherland (If used by an Indian). If used by foreigner - they will get a glimpse of Indian tales and mythologies by using this app.

Home Screen

This app will provide 3 - 4 stories and the kid is supposed to choose one of them to read at a time. Display resolution: 480 x 320 px (3:2 ratio)



Story

Selected story will appear in frames after frames along with text and audio (optional)


At the end of the story, kid is supposed to answer few questions related to the story. For example - match the following, true/false, recognising the images etc.


Questions

With each correct answer, user will gain a score


If the kid fails in choosing the right option for 2 times then the right answer will appear on screen automatically.


Interactive Map As a part of my Design Project, I worked on an Interactve map for Banasthali Institute of Design. User can navigate through the department and it will give an overview of the activities happening inside. With the help of interactive map viewer will get instant information of the activities, events, workshops and the room where it is taking place.


Desgin Brief Client: Dr. Himadri Ghosh Project: To design an Interactive Map for Banasthali Institute of Design Prepared by: Alka Rani Overview: Banasthali Institute of Design is a unique institution that addresses the needs of design education. Every visitor that comes to BID is not familiar with the department and doesn’t know what’s going inside. The interactive map will help the viewer in navigating through the department and it will give an overview of the activities happening inside. With the help of interactive map viewer will get instant information of the activities, events and workshops and the room where it is taking place. Objective: • To design an interactive map for BID. • To highlight the areas where a visitor must go and have a look. • Apart from giving the direction and information, the purpose of the map is to showcase the capabilities of the students and what is happening inside BID.


Target Audience (Primary) • Visitors • Guest Faculties (Secondary) • Faculties of other departments of Banasthali University • Parents • New students • Students of other departments


Pictograms

These are the final pictograms that I made for the map, that will give the viewer an instant image of the activities that take place in that room.


Interactive Map: Ground Floor Icons of the map are clickable, so user can click on the icons present on the map to get the information.

On mouseover on the top bar, drop down menu will appear so user can also navigate through the map by using the buttons of the top bar.

Typography As a part of Typography assignment, I designed a font on a given theme - Child. By using the same font I also designed a book cover for Child.

Visual Identity Design As a part of my classroom assignment, I had redesigned the Visual Identity of De Beers. De Beers is a well established International diamond jewellery brand.

Project: To redesign the corporate identity of De Beers. Background: De Beers is a well established internatonal diamond jewellery brand and it has been bringing both classically elegant and modern jewellery for more than hundred years. De Beers has been bringing the finest diamonds in its collection. Objective: To introduce new brand image of De Beers so that it can race ahead of all other existing diamond jewellery brands around the world. In a purely competitive market, new brand identity will grab the attention of target audience and position the brand in their mind. With its new image and stylish collections, more people will tend to purchase De Beers Jewellery to feel the glamorous experience. People will recall the brand and see it as their ‘only choice’ despite having many other diamond jewellery brands in market. Target Audience: • Mainly Females • Married/ getting married/ single- with high income job • Upper middle class- Upper class • Spend money on jewellery • Party loving

Logo

Core Elements The logo consists: 1. Stylized alphabets of ‘De Beers’ 2. Diamond Graphic 3. Logotype.

Logo Symbolism Stylized Initial alphabets of De Beers are used in logo. They are sleek with sharp edges that symbolise the sharp cuts of diamonds. Since ‘De Beers’ is a diamond jewellery brand, to symbolise that a graphic diamond is used on the top.
