Message from the

Executive Director Courageous, amazing, humbling, inspiring are just some of the words that spring to mind when I think of the people I’ve met and the stories I’ve heard at the Ronald McDonald House this past year. While it takes many hearts and hands to run an organization capable of housing 80 families per night, it is the conversations and notes of thanks from families, volunteers, and donors that underscore this important mission. Our charity has cared for 48,000 families over the past 34 years. But that number is not a true reflection of how many people we have touched, as we count each family as one, whether there are six or two people in that family. It is amazing to think that we have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people through the years. Children from previous years are now returning as adults with children of their own to volunteer, donate, or use our houses.

As we enter our 35th year, it is comforting to know that thousands of families, donors, supporters, and volunteers will pass through our doors and be welcomed into our “home-away-from-home”. We are so much more than buildings with doors and windows. A heart beats inside each of our houses, brought there through commitment and dedication by our hundreds of volunteers, meal donors, staff, and board members. The Ronald McDonald House is a place where love is offered freely, without hesitation. On behalf of all the families who find solace at the Ronald McDonald House of Tampa Bay, thank you for being there when we needed you most. I wish you all the best for a healthy and happy new year. Fondly,

CORE PROGRAMS

Ronald McDonald House® The Ronald McDonald House offers families a place to call home while their child is receiving critical medical treatment in area hospitals. For 34 years, our Ronald McDonald Houses have provided a “homeaway-from-home” for 48,000 pediatric families in need of comfort and care during a most difficult time in their lives. Annually, 2,000 families come through our doors looking for a quiet place to rest and find solace. There are three Houses in St. Petersburg that care for families with children receiving treatment at All Children’s Hospital: St. Pete East, St. Pete West, and St. Pete Central. Our fourth House, located on the campus of Tampa General Hospital, cares for families with children at Tampa General, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital of Tampa, and Shriners Hospital. At Ronald McDonald House families receive much more than accommodation; they find a safe, convenient, and home-like environment. Volunteers at each of our Houses strive to engage families and help them through difficult times by offering pet therapy, arts and crafts, bingo, game nights and so much more. Community organizations like the Florida Aquarium, Alligator Attraction and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve have all brought wildlife to our Houses to entertain the families, while Legoland’s giant-sized characters delighted the kids. The stories we hear from families repeatedly state that they do not know what they would have done if Ronald McDonald House had not been available for them. No other charity in our local community provides this service to pediatric families.

Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a partnership with the University of South Florida’s Department of Pediatrics. This specially-designed vehicle houses two patient exam rooms, a laboratory, reception and medical records area to provide healthcare to underserved children in Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. In 2014, the Care Mobile cared for 607 patients. In addition to providing health and dental care to children who would not have access to this care otherwise, the program also functions as an educational opportunity for USF pediatric residents, medical students, and nurse practitioner students. Currently, 69 pediatric residents, three nurse practitioner students, and four BSN nursing students participate in the Care Mobile program as part of their rotations. They experience first-hand the challenges uninsured and underinsured children and their families face in receiving quality health care. The Care Mobile helps prepare these future health care providers for the role of child healthcare advocate within the community.

Scholarship Program

MISSION STATEMENT Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay provides comfort, care, and support to children and their families through the operation of core programs like the Ronald McDonald House, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, RMHC College Scholarships, and grants to other non-profit organizations that assist children. The Ronald McDonald House® of Tampa Bay provides a home-awayfrom-home for families of pediatric patients in area hospitals.

In 2014 we honored 22 deserving high school students from our eleven-county area at a special awards luncheon. These students received scholarships for a pre-paid two-year Florida college tuition or equivalent tuition to use at an approved accredited institution. The students, along with their families, school counselors, and administrators enjoyed a special lunch courtesy of the McDonald’s Tampa Bay CoOp and were recognized for their hard work. McDonald’s owner/operators and RMHC Board members also attended to honor the recipients and hear about their academic and community achievements. Love Notes • Spring 2015

The Gift of Bone Marrow By Alison Barrick & Natalie Gillespie Four-year-old Nicholas Vermaxidis greets me at the St. Petersburg West Ronald McDonald House with sparkling eyes that reveal a smile hidden behind his medical mask. Immediately, this precocious little boy asks if we can go outside to play. A beautiful ball of energy, he is unaware of the thin hair that sparsely covers his recently bald head. His mother Elena speaks softly to him in Russian, and Nicholas darts off to play in the room next door while I sit down to hear his mother tell me Nicholas’s story. Elena Vermaxidis looks right at home in the downstairs kitchen of the West House, reserved just for families whose children have received bone marrow transplants or have other medical conditions that cause their immune systems to need extra protection. A Russian beauty with sparkling blue eyes and an excellent

Elena recounts that there was nothing abnormal about her pregnancy or Nicholas’s infancy, except that he had a poor appetite as a baby. At first, the pediatrician showed no alarm and Elena tried not to worry. But at each doctor’s visit, her baby boy’s growth fell further and further behind. By four months, Nicholas had stopped growing altogether. The family patiently waited an agonizing eight months to see a specialist who performed a growth hormone test. The test showed that Nicholas had a deficiency, and the specialist prescribed growth hormones. Nicholas finally began to grow, but his medical issues were far from over. While on vacation in Russia with Elena’s family shortly afterwards, the family visited a doctor who performed a sonogram. The test revealed that one of the little boy’s kidneys was very small. Upon their return to the U.S., another sonogram confirmed the Russian doctor’s findings. When Nicholas Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare, inherited blood disorder that leads to bone was 18 months old, doctors decided to remove the smaller kidney since it would marrow failure. The family was referred to hematology/oncology specialist Dr. Iftikhar Hanif at the Joe DiMaggio Hospital grasp of the English language, Nicholas’s mom recalls in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Hanif analyzed all the data how she was shopping in Walgreens in her hometown from the numerous tests Nicholas had undergone and of Hollywood, Florida when her husband Angelos called finally pinpointed the diagnosis of Fanconi Anemia to tell her that Nicholas would receive the transplant he (FA). health problems, as children who have Fanconi Anemia pass large amounts of key nutrients and chemicals through their urine. Now that she had a name for it, Elena began to search the internet to learn as much as she could about her son’s disease, becoming more and more frightened as she read page after page of dire predictions. A bone marrow transplant was Nicholas’s best option, but a match had to be found. Family members, especially siblings, have the greatest chance of being a match, so Nicholas’s parents and his younger sister Sophia all underwent testing. Elena and Angelos also had Sophia undergo genetic testing to rule out the possibility that she had inherited FA. Thankfully, Sophia tested negative. After the good news call that Sophia was a bone marrow match for Nicholas, the family searched for the right hospital to perform the transplant. There are hospitals that specialize in FA patients in Minnesota and Ohio, but neither were a possibility for the financially burdened family. They considered Miami Children’s Hospital only to learn that the doctors there had no experience with FA. Finally, they found Dr. Aleksandra Petrovic at All Children’s Hospital (ACH) in St. Petersburg. The operation could go forward, but Elena and Angelos wondered how they could manage an extended stay on the opposite coast from their home. Nicholas’s hospital stay could be more than a month, and protocol for BMT patients is to stay within one hour of the hospital for the first 100 days after the

transplant. That way, the patient’s health can be continuously monitored for infections, rejection of the new cells, or graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a complication where the transplanted cells attack the patient’s cells. Then the family learned about RMH. Like many people, the Vermaxidis family did not know what RMH provides. They were amazed to find such a wonderful home-away-from-home that would welcome them during this nerve-racking time. The family moved to RMH West and settled in for their extended stay. Elena’s mother traveled from Russia to watch Sophia at RMH while Elena stayed at the hospital with Nicholas as he endured five days of chemotherapy to prepare his body for his sister’s cells. When the transplant day arrived, Sophia was anaesthetized to extract the bone marrow, which was then transported to Tampa for testing. Later that day, the bone marrow was returned to All Children’s and transplanted into Nicholas. After 29 days in the hospital, Nicholas was discharged into his mother’s care in the transplant wing of RMH West. This area of the house is reserved just for transplant families to reduce the risk of infection and accommodate special dietary needs. Nicholas was put on a low microbial diet, which means he can’t have any raw fruit or vegetables (along with other restrictions) to minimize the chance of organisms getting into his gastrointestinal tract and attacking his system. Nicholas misses his beloved apples and cucumbers but is adjusting well to his new diet. The West House kitchen is perfect for Elena to prepare all of the special foods that Nicholas needs continued page 21 Love Notes • Spring 2015

Giving a Heart for The House That Love Built

Our four Houses were bustling with activity every single day during the holiday season as our generous community showed their support for our families. Individuals and groups outdid themselves this year, bringing car loads of items to help our families feel special during the holidays. We are honored that Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning continued his commitment to our families by serving as our spokesperson and giving us a lead gift. Thanks to the hard work of our friends at FKQ Advertising, this extensive appeal included television and radio, billboards, website banners, mall kiosks, McDonald’s trayliners, and a mailer to RMH friends. The 2014 holiday open house was held in St. Pete at All Children’s

As always, the evening’s highlight was Santa’s arrival, where the children eagerly waited in line to sit on Santa’s lap and whisper their Christmas wishes. RMHC CEO Janice Davis presented the 2014 Friends Award to longtime friend Vickii Walters of Gold Productions for her 15 years of work on producing the Storybook Ball. Thank you to all our donors, friends, and volunteers for Giving a Heart for The House That Love Built. Your donations provide for almost 2,000 nights for our families!

Vickii Walters is congratulated by RMHC CEO Janice Davis.

Each year, RMHC of Tampa Bay honors an individual or company that has made a significant impact on our organization. Vickii Walters has been a longtime friend and generous donor for the past twenty years. As the creative force behind the Storybook Ball since inception fifteen years ago, Vickii has donated half of her event production fee back to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay for each of those years. Her donations total $375,000 - the equivalent of 4,687 family nights! Vickii has made each gala come to life through her hands-on talents, and help from her outstanding crew, and creative husband, Victor.

Brother’s Lifesaving Gift Organ donation brings new perspective to donor Twenty-seven-year-old Cody Phillips wipes tears from his eyes when he describes the life of his 13-year-old brother, Carter. Until recently, Carter was spending three days a week at the dialysis clinic, because his kidneys shut down a year ago and had to be surgically removed. In Cody’s eyes, his brother is a smart kid who doesn’t deserve what life has handed him. Carter has been diagnosed with Froelich’s Syndrome, a medical condition involving endocrine abnormalities especially in the hypothalamus (a section of the brain responsible for hormone production). This syndrome mostly affects males in childhood, typically during puberty. Carter has been sick for most of his life and is homeschooled because of his abnormal schedule. When Cody tested positive as a kidney match for Carter, he knew this was his chance to save his little brother’s life. Carter has been on the transplant list for many months, but the good fortune of having his big brother as a match meant that he wouldn’t have to wait any longer. The timing of the operation

also seemed to perfectly coincide with Cody’s schedule, as his job allowed him to take some time off over the holidays to give his brother this lifesaving gift. Carter and Cody’s family spent the holidays away from their home in Pensacola at the Tampa Ronald McDonald House while the brothers recuperated from surgery. Recuperation has been easier for Carter than for Cody, who has been experiencing nausea from his medication in addition to the pain from surgery. However, seeing his brother improve makes all the pain and discomfort worth it. Time spent in reflection has made Cody realize that this happened for a reason. It has also given him a new purpose in life to complete his education. Read the full story www.rmhctampabay.org

Planned Gifts & Charitable Rollover Options LEGACY PLANNING

It’s no secret the work we do to change children’s lives today and in the future depends upon your generosity. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to share your goodwill. After including your family in your will or trust, please consider leaving a gift to the Ronald McDonald House of Tampa Bay. Just a few sentences as follows helps to sustain the Ronald McDonald House for years to come. “I, [name], of [city, state ZIP], give, devise and bequeath to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay, [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose.”

Meet the Charitable IRA Rollover: A Giving Option that Reduces Your Taxable IRA Income The Charitable IRA Rollover is another way of giving that allows Individual Retirement Account owners age 70½ or older to exclude up to $100,000 a year from income by distributing IRA funds directly to public charities like Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay. With a Charitable IRA Rollover, a taxpayer age 70½ or older can choose to transfer funds directly from an IRA to a qualified charity. The benefit of the direct transfer is that you avoid paying income tax you would otherwise be required to pay on that distribution. The annual limit is $100,000 per taxpayer ($200,000 for a married couple), and the distribution must be made directly from your IRA trustee to a charity like the Ronald McDonald House.

Extra Tax Benefit

Once you reach age 70½, you must begin taking “required minimum distributions” (RMDs) from your IRAs, and these distributions are taxable at ordinary income rates. Failure to take an RMD generally results in a penalty equal to 50% of the amount that should have been withdrawn. However, with the Charitable IRA Rollover, the amount you distribute from an IRA to a charity like the Ronald McDonald House counts as an RMD. If you fall into this category, you can use the Charitable IRA Rollover to meet this requirement without paying tax while also contributing to a worthy cause. The Charitable IRA Rollover has been extended for two years until the end of 2016. Time will tell if it becomes a permanent fixture in IRS law, so contact your tax advisor today to see if this method of giving to the Ronald McDonald House is right for you. 10

The Fred Scarcelli, Jr. RMH Charity Golf Classic Golfers from near and far joined us at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in midNovember to enjoy two days of golf in support of our Ronald McDonald House families. This year donors of $100 for raffle & mulligan tickets received a pair of our striped socks in addition to cigars. The socks were a big hit with the golfers, who immediately put them on to show their support. Attendees gathered in the evening for a delicious dinner, live auction of Super Bowl tickets, player awards, and casino games. One of the evening’s highlights featured a presentation from Keith Robinson of the Madeira Group Smith Barney with a check to Ronald McDonald House for $15,000 from the 2014 Valspar Championship. This golf classic is one of our signature events, netting close to $100,000 for the operation of our four Ronald McDonald Houses. Please visit our website to view the complete photo gallery. This year’s tournament is scheduled for November 13-14. Watch your mailbox in August for the brochure!

Ronald McDonald was on hand to greet participants.

Keith Robinson (L) with Janice Davis and Edward Ameen.

Steve Antonell and Ken Lucas wasted no time in putting on their special socks! Ed Ameen and Vic Collins rounded out the foursome.

The Guy Harvey Fishing for Hearts Tournament

We rely on the amazing support from MetLife volunteers for this event.

The 2014 Guy Harvey Fishing for Hearts Tournament was the most successful ever, due in great part to a generous donation from the TradeWinds Islands Resorts. Each participant received a two-night stay at the Guy Harvey Outpost in addition to a fabulous goody bag and shirt, which were donated by Majestic. Thursday evening featured a captain’s meeting and angler social at the beautiful RumFish Grill. On Friday, anglers were transported by shuttle to the Loggerhead Marina where their boats departed for a day of fishing with some of the best fishing captains in the state. Later that day, anglers returned to the RumFish Grill to learn if they had won in their category (trout, redfish, snook), bid on silent auction items, and enjoy delicious food. Thanks to our generous donors (shout out to Neill Finkel!) and participants we raised a record amount of $81,000 for this tournament. We expect this year to be even bigger and better! Stay tuned for event details on this year’s tournament, scheduled for September 24 & 25. Jason Fialkoff of CTB Foodservice Consultants proudly displays his catch. SM

DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS BOWLING TOURNAMENT July 11 - Dunedin Lanes

Charity Fundraisers & Events KIMAL LUMBER’S CLASSIC CAR SHOW April 26 - Centennial Park, Venice Classic and exotic car owners gather annually for this popular downtown Venice event, which continues to grow each year. Kimal Lumber combines the proceeds from this classic and their fall golf tournament into donations benefiting RMH and All Children’s Hospital. To date they have raised almost $260,000 for RMH alone!

WEST HOUSE 35TH BIRTHDAY PARTY April 16 Thirty five years ago, we opened the first Ronald McDonald House in the state of Florida. That first house is now called RMH West, a classic cottage that has undergone many transformations over the years. This 18-bedroom home has been a place of comfort and respite for thousands of families who needed a place to stay while their children received treatment at All Children’s Hospital. Now, this house serves families who need longer term accomodations, such as bone marrow transplant families like the Vermaxidis family. Join us from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16th to celebrate this important milestone. 702 8th Avenue South, St. Petersburg, FL 33701.

VEHICLE DONATIONS Since 2009, we have partnered with an agency to receive donations of cars, boats, trailers and RVs. This partnership has resulted in almost $50,000 in donations to date, which equates to 625 family nights at the Ronald McDonald House. If you or someone you know is interested in donating a vehicle to support our families, please contact us or visit www. onecarhelpsrmhc.com.

Last year, the Dunedin Blue Jays approached us about holding a bowling tournament to raise money for RMH. They put together an entire event featuring all of the baseball players, numerous silent auction items, and an exciting tournament with lots of RMH participation. All that hard work paid off - they raised an astounding $5,200 for RMH! The group was so excited by their success that they’ve decided to hold the tournament again this year. If you’re a baseball fan, this is your chance to mingle with the players! For more information on participation and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Kathi Beckman at 727.738.7052 or kathi.beckman@bluejays.com.

DRIVER LICENSES Please remember to add $1 (or more) for RMH when you purchase or renew your Florida driver license or vehicle tag. This program has raised $340,500 for Florida Ronald McDonald Houses and $74,000 for RMHC Tampa Bay. Help us spread the word!

GIVE DAY TAMPA BAY IS MAY 5TH! Join this community-wide event to show off Tampa Bay’s spirit of giving.

Bone Marrow Transplant continued from page 7 to get better, while Elena enjoys eating the meals prepared by the community groups at the house. The Vermaxidis family feels right at home in this special house, which has been Elena and Nicholas’s residence since summer 2014. There are lots of toys for Nicholas, a secure outdoor patio which allows him to run and play, helpful volunteers that express care and concern, and other BMT families to connect with. Complimentary ACH shuttles provide transportation to and from the hospital and proved extremely helpful in the early days when even a short walk was not possible for Nicholas. Now that he is further along in recovery, the preschooler can ride his bike alongside Elena to and from ACH. This beautiful little boy nicknamed “Baby Biker” because of the sunglasses he wears to protect his sensitive eyes makes everyone smile and wins friends wherever he goes. When RMH volunteers learned that Nicholas felt sad because he didn’t have a Halloween costume, they bought him one, much to his delight. Elena and Nicholas are grateful to be able to stay at RMH West until it is safe for them to go home. She networks with other FA families on Facebook and knows how difficult extended hospital stays can be for families who do not have a Ronald McDonald House nearby. She even knows a few families in Russia who have had to rent expensive apartments in order to stay near their hospitalized child. Most people can’t believe what RMH offers, and Elena admits that sometimes she cannot believe it either. Nicholas has stopped asking when they will go home and now only asks when Dad will come to visit. He Skypes every day with his father and with his sister Sophia, who is staying with her grandparents in Russia until Elena and Nicholas return home. Nicholas knows that Sophia saved his life, and he knows that as the big brother he must always protect her. Nicholas recently passed the 100-day posttransplant mark, and Elena looks ahead to the day they can go home with mixed emotions. While it will be wonderful to be back in her house with her family all together again, she has come to love the people at RMH and ACH and says she will miss the other RMH families and the medical professionals who now feel like family. Elena has enrolled in ESL (English as a second language) classes and hopes to

attend college one day so she can work in the medical field herself. Elena and Angelos hope that advances in the medical field will allow Nicholas one day to be completely healthy. For now, Elena knows that her upcoming good-byes to the staff and volunteers at RMH and ACH will not be forever. She and Nicholas will return each week for follow-up care and will likely stay at RMH West. “RMH is the biggest help in our situation,” Elena said. “We can’t imagine what we would do without it.”

Volunteer OF THE MONTH We could not operate our Ronald McDonald Houses without the loving care provided by our loyal house shift volunteers. In 2014 we chose one volunteer each month from amongst our four houses who provided exceptional service and went above and beyond. Thank you to these amazing volunteers!

Red Shoe Council The Red Shoe Council (“RSC”) consists of young and mid-professionals who live and work in the Tampa Bay area. Our goals are to raise community awareness and operating funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay. We host and participate in fundraisers for RMH on both sides of the bay, and we prepare quarterly meals at the Houses to allow members hands-on interaction with our families and House program. RSC membership requirements are $50 annual dues, a commitment to attend or volunteer at one fundraiser per year, and a pledge to volunteer at one meal at the Houses per year (at minimum). Members receive a Red Shoe Council t-shirt, RSC “red shoes” pin, and discounted member rates at all fundraisers organized by the RSC. In addition to events, we hold quarterly all-member meetings and two member social happy hours per year. If you’re interested in joining, please contact RSC Liaison Alexandria Ascioti at aascioti@rmhctampabay.org.
