The troupe was invited to share something about the experience of producing Clue. Excerpts from select responses appear below. ***Spoiler: Art Education works!***

“[Everyone] misses the feeling of live theatre and the electric feeling before the curtain rises. I hope that streaming this unique way of performing replicates that feeling in some way,” – Carlee Bystrycki (Actress) “I hope that audiences are able to view a different form of performance that is fairly unique. I hope Clue opens the audience’s eyes up to the art of voice acting,” – Pete Cuddihy (Actor) “While this rehearsal process was not a typical one, it was an amazing experience for us as actors to learn how to manipulate our voices in order to portray very unique characters. I hope audiences enjoy the interesting characters we have all worked so hard to develop and that Clue makes everyone laugh,” -- Alexa Gershon (Actress) “Corona cannot stop us. If anything, these virtual shows give many more students opportunities…through added ensemble scenes and songs which typically would not be in a show,” -- Jacob Gilman (Actor) “I hope audiences get a lot of laughs out of our production,” -- Rebecca Sabath (Actress) “East theatre productions have always prided themselves on bringing the audience into a different place, time, or world. I sincerely hope that this production will do the same, allowing the stresses of modern day life to drift away for an hour or two,” -- Peter Slattery (Actor) “Everyone listening to the show will have their own individual interpretation of what the scenes may look like, making [Clue] a uniquely personal experience for all,” -- Elena Suarez (Actress) “You'll see how much work the cast put into it and how we didn't just stop everything because of Corona, the directors did all they could to keep moving forward with positivity,” – Lily Tewfik (Actress) “From the cast to the crew, these people have wowed me more times than I can count, and I've only been in Cherry Hill East for a few months. Thanks for giving me a shot Cherry Hill, and I will see you in the halls of Boddy Manor,” -- Anthony Torrissi (Actor) “While [Clue] is a show about murder, mystery, and mayhem, it has shown me and the rest of the cast something very important; that art can rise above all...This should be able to instill a sense of comfort into the audience, because even though we are all feeling beaten down by the severity of the pandemic, we can still turn to the arts and create something that can make people forget about all the insanity that is happening around us,” -- Justin Walker (Actor) “I think this show does a great job of immersing you into another world, which might be very useful right now,” – Sarah Werkmeister (Actress)

A Research Letter from the Student Dramaturgical Staff By Dylan Schwartz & Peter Slattery During the interim between World Wars, English musician Anthony Pratt was watching murder mystery scenarios unfold in European county mansions (2). These games took place within houses containing many sprawling rooms and guests who had gathered for an evening of dining and socializing. As part of the scenario a body was found, and those inside the mansion fell under suspicion. By putting clues together, the hotel guests worked to solve the mystery (1). These were very popular games at the time. Pratt was so intrigued that he took mental notes while guests play-acted dastardly crimes involving shrieking and falling “dead” to the floor (2). In 1943, Pratt and his wife Elva decided to recreate those parlor games and designed a miniature board game called Murder! (2). In 1945, he demonstrated the game to Norman Watson, the managing game director of Waddington company. After a few minor modifications, the game was renamed Cluedo (1). Pratt also sold the game to the Parker Brothers, the American counterpart of Waddington (later Hasbro), where it would be known as Clue. The game did not go into production until 1949 due to the shortages of materials in Britain during the war. The object of the game is to determine who murdered Mr. Boddy, how, and where. Each player assumes the role of one of the six suspects and attempts to deduce the correct answer by collecting clues from the other players (1). For the next three and a half decades, Cluedo rose in popularity and became a fun and imaginative pastime that always seemed to have a place on the living room or family room floor. With its rising popularity, the idea of expanding the brand became an interesting question. How does one take a game like Cluedo and adapt it into something new, exciting, yet remain in line with its source material? In 1985 that question was answered with “Clue” the movie. Directed by Jonathan Lynn, the film features a fantastic ensemble cast including Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren (4). To stay true to the main themes of the board game, each actor represents a game piece respectively. To round out the plot, many more characters were added, such as Wadsworth the butler, Mr. Boddy himself, a surly Chef, a Maid, and many more. Lynn also wanted someone to fashion the murder mystery script in such a way that it could accommodate multiple endings. He thought it would be a clever wink to the original game--after all, no two games of Clue are ever the same! More importantly, multiple endings would convince viewers to pay to see the film again and again (3). They didn’t. “Clue” was a box-office flop, but it found cult status on home video, where people could see all three endings back-to-back to gain the ultimate “whodunit” experience. A Letter From The Director Who done it? Where? And with what?

Over the summer, the production staff and I pondered answers to similar questions.

And no, we weren’t playing board games. We were discussing the Cherry Hill East Theater season. I won’t wax poetic about a quote I read in Chicken Soup for the Soul or “it is what it is” you to death. However, I firmly believe that adversity sparks creativity. In terms of the fall show, clinging to tradition was more of a hindrance than a comfort. In CLUE we saw an opportunity to do something that had never been done at our school before—a full-blown audio show, you know, just like great grannie used to make! More importantly, we saw the avenue to provide a challenging artistic activity for our troupe—voice acting is no joke. Imagine playing baseball without a glove. Besides, CLUE had a real chance of being completed! Amid the chaos that is this year, what more could you ask for??? Don’t answer that. CLUE became much more than an inspired backup plan. We rehearsed outside of the school, in beach chairs, on blankets, taking full advantage of the joy that is early autumn. I often left with a face tired from laughing. The script and the actors are funny, but I think I smiled so much because Troupe 213 was once again living up to its motto of “Anytime. Anyplace. Anywhere.” Is anyone surprised? It’s what these kids do. They find a way. I’m not sure Art can impart a more important lesson for today. As you listen to CLUE tonight, I dare you to ignore the joy in each actor’s performance. It’s tangible. It’s contagious. And it’s made so much better by the contributions of Mr. Mark Warfel and Mrs. Heather Lockart who volunteered their time purely out of love for the arts. I speak for the entire troupe when I say thank you for your expertise, your willingness to help, and your friendship. Finally, Clue was possible because we are backed by an administration and school district that values Arts Education. From March of 2020, it was made clear that—as long as it was safe to do so—we would continue to offer the activities that mean so much to our student body and faculty. Not all school drama communities have been this lucky. A special thank you to Dr. Perry and the rest of the Cherry Hill Administration for that in-house support. So, three months later, we finally have our answers. -We done it. -In a beach chair. -With a tape recorder.

Who’s Who on the Staff Pete Gambino (Director) has worked in the Cherry Hill East Drama Department since 2008. He earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Rutgers University, Camden. His hobbies include reading, crossword puzzles, and watching an irresponsible amount of New York Yankees baseball. He would like to thank his family and friends for their continued support as well as his entire production staff for their dedication and commitment. Finally, a special and deeply heartfelt thank you also goes out to Sandi Makofsky for her wisdom, endless patience, and consistent encouragement.

Sandi Makofski (Co-Director) has been working in theater for as long as she can remember. While studying to be a performer, she found that her true love was a career on the other side of the casting table. She has worked as a waitress, a clown, a telephone surveyor, a price checker, a preschool teacher, a dance teacher, a caterer, owned a performing arts studio, owned a dessert catering business and has choreographed and directed shows from professional children’s theater to industry films, showcases and readings in NYC, colleges, high schools, regional and community theater. She is presently the Resident Director at Voorhees Theatre Company in Voorhees. She landed here at East many moons ago and now has the great pleasure of working alongside the talented Mr. Gambino with the remarkable students in the theater department. It is one of her greatest joys in life! Heather Lockart (Vocal Director) is honored to have been asked to participate in Clue. If not for this experience, she would never have discovered her passion for commercial jingles and is therefore eternally grateful to have been granted the position of Commercial Jingle Vocal Director. Prior to Clue, Mrs. Lockart vocal directed Man of La Mancha, Pippin, Fiddler on the Roof, and Legally Blonde. She is one of two full-time choral directors at Cherry Hill East where she conducts several choirs including Vocal Workshop, Concert Choir, Chansons and Stay Tuned. “Lock” looks forward to the day where we can all return to the stage, but is excited for the unique opportunity to present a thrilling radio show. Hope you all enjoy! Chris Miller (Editor) has been TD and set/lighting designer for West for the Past 4 years and is excited to be working with the awesome staff and kids from East this year! His Professional Credits include various shows from the Eagle Theater, Ritz Theater, Broadway Theater of Pitman, Kelsey Theater, Iron Crow theater in Baltimore and Candlelight Theater In Delaware. He also enjoys working with various education institutions in both High School and University settings.

Cherry Hill East’s production of GYPSY in March of 1978 marked the inception of “The Thespian Mirror” as the program magazine for productions at Cherry Hill School East produced by the International Thespian Society. The name is borrowed from the historical document discovered while researching in Theatre History classes. First published in 1805, the original was a critical journal by a young aspiring actor, John Howard Payne, who from the age of 14 and or the next 20 years became well known as a performer, playwright, and critic. He wrote 50-60 plays during his career. Of these, the best known include BRUTUS (1818) and CHARLES II (1824). He holds the prestigious position in history as America’s first internationally successful dramatist. Our program title seems fitting then as young aspiring actors before you tonight strive for the success which Payne proved possible even as a child prodigy and since we subscribe to Aristotle’s philosophy that good theatre must truly “mirror” our existence. We proudly celebrate 39 years of MIRROR as the program magazine for our mainstage productions. We thank our advertisers for making this what it is today!
