VAPOR HOUSE

David Jameson Architect Bethesda, Maryland Project Designer SD through CD/Permitting

Vapor house explores with the duality of water’s massiveness and it’s ethereal transparency. As a large body of water has weight and deep opacity, so too do the towering and bending forms which contain the more private spaces. Panels of rippled steel provide privacy by reflecting earth and sky randomly, obscuring the building’s scale and materiality. Between and above the bending forms are the more public spaces of the house which are rendered in clear glazing, invoking the layered transparency of a stream. These spaces ebb and flow around the pool, pulling and bending interior space into exterior space, and vice versa. Photographs by Paul Warchol

BARCODE HOUSE

David Jameson Architect Washington DC Project Designer Concept through CA

For this twelve foot by seventeen foot addition to a rowhouse in the DuPont circle neighborhood of Washington DC circulation, storage, and services are consolidated in a five foot wide, four story tall stucco mass bracketing the project to the interior side of the lot. This core then bends down at the alley level to create an L-shaped mass in elevation. The remaining twelve foot by twelve foot space is cradled as a jewel, exposing itself and the contained domestic programs (kitchen, sitting room, roof deck) to the urban environment. Countering the weight & opacity of the L-shaped mass, the cradled jewel exposes it’s superstructural elements as finished steel members and exposed metal decking. Horizontal struts are spaced regularly along the central vertical bays of structural steel to provide lateral bracing. These are broken up by irregularly spaced non-structural struts, creating a field of random banding. Photographs by Paul Warchol

DOW KAUST WATER LAB HOK KAUST, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia Project Designer DD through CD

From 2015-2016 I was involved with this project from DD through CD. I served as a project designer, along with 3 other designers, and my role was primarily the development of the exterior skin systems. As design elements changed, evolved, or were developed further, we were also tasked with communicating this to the team; including models I built and shown in the following pages. This project for a water lab on the threshold of the KAUST campus and the Red Sea is to act as the crown jewel and entry moment for the campus. A mostly opeque building, the challenge was to create a metal panel system that could be applied on a large scale , is economical, repetitive, easy to install, and yet allows enough variation across many different applications. 6 types of bent metal plate were used to create a water-like effect across otherwise “dead-zones of facade. WOLFE STREET CONDO Morris-HZ

Dallas TX Project Designer Concept through SD This project for the firm’s president is both a permanent home base for him and his wife, and space for showcasing their most beloved art. Working with MorrisHZ’s interior’s team I was primarily involved in laying out the sequences of spaces housing both artwork display and also private living areas. Varying ceiling heights and materiality, along with layers of casework and thresholds, work together to build drama and sequence in the space, while working around intimate areas meant for everyday living and entertaining. DAHLONEGA RESIDENCE David Jameson Architect Bethesda Maryland Project Designer Concept through CD/Permitting

This project reused the foundations and perimeter walls of an existing two story mid century modern home on a slope, and removed the roof to create a new more open relationship to its surroundings. Bracketed by a wicket of weathering steel, the house is articulated as a portal to the landscape. An exterior living area is provided within the open space beneath the wicket as a counter-pressure to the steeply sloped site. The main level is veiled in stucco, acid etched glass, and transparent glass, providing layered tectonic contrast to the void space above. The upper level glass cube and burned wood volume further the juxtaposition of the heavy and light. Photographs by Bruce Damonte

WOODSIDE RESIDENCE

David Jameson Architect Washington DC Project Designer Concept through SD

The concept I came up with in 2010 for this residence was for a structure that could be built in two stages: first, a continuous concrete ribbon that independently creates public space and provides structure for the second stage of off-site prefabricated constructed capsules. These contain private programs, which are inserted into the concrete ribbon network. The built-up north-eastern side of the project includes the entry, dining room, kitchen and great room, which inhabit the space under the second level bedroom capsules and the interstitial ribbon space simultaneously. As the project moves to the more private south-western part of the site it becomes less dense and the ribbon begins to create interstitial space not only internally but also with itself on the exterior, creating a primary and numerous secondary courtyards. POST OAK POOL HOUSE NEMEStudio

Houston TX UNBUILT Project Designer Concept through DD Designer for this 900 sf pool house addition to a highrise condominium building in Houston. Other than the roof (visible from the units above), the structure is entirely glass. The glass wall zigs and zags as a series of 3’-6 panels that create 90 degree seating niches within the structure. 8 of these panels are on hinges and act as fenestration.

CORPORATE OFFICE CAMPUS HOK

Pittsburgh PA UNBUILT Project Designer SD through CD A member of a 3 person design team for the 500,000sf campus of a major energy company, I was involved with the project from initial SD, through DD, a second round of conceptual studies after DD, and then an additional round of SD with an updated amenities component, until the project was ultimately placed on hold due to a readjustment in corrporate projections. The project takes typical office block typologies and combines them into one single bar on the site that still retains its autonomy as three separate buildings through the bending and floating of the form. The podium that 2/3 of the bar sits on cascades down the 60’ topographic change to cradle the amenities tower and campus entry element. My primary contribution was directed towards the skin of the project. 4 materials are used throughout the campus: a heavy solid (5’x10’x2” high performance concrete panels), a gasket (highly reflective CW), a podium (CW with 9.5” vertically oriented fins spaced 30” apart), and the amenity skin (CW with custom frit). Many studies at various scales were used to determine the modulation, graphic and tectonic relationships all of these materials had across the many contexts of the suburban office campus.

NEW METRO BUS SHELTER PROTOTYPES Morris-HZ

Houston TX UNBUILT Project Designer Concept through CD/Pricing One of three teams tasked with creating new prototypes for modular bus shelter systems that can be expanded from local routes to larger major intersection stops. My prototype took on the role of most versatile and flexible, and was conceived of being deployed in over 80% of the situations throughout the network. Additionally, as this was to be rolled out with the new bus network route and corporate branding, this module was designed to take on the graphic legibility and boldness of the existing Houston Metro logo, which was not to change in the new branding excise. Colored panels and white stripes in logo are made of polycarbonate, and in the case of the stripes act as LED lens caps. These are mounted on an anodized aluminum frame which and is all prefabricated off site. Depending on the size and needs of the local station various numbers of modules are bolted to in-situ foundations and bolted together. All materials and assemblies are graffiti resistant and joints are intentionally left open to allow for maintenance, water penetration, and to discourage refuse build up at the base and sides. We took these prototypes from initial concept through CD documentation and initial pricing.

AL MARJAN Morris-HZ

AL MARJAN ISLAND UAE UNBUILT Project Designer Concept Sited roughly 90 kilometers north of Dubai on the man-made island of Al Marjan, in the Emirate Ras Al Khaimah, this resort hotel draws from the landform making culture of the UAE. The 5-sided site is extruded as a 35 meter tall block, eroded and carved in order to create a cohesive form that adapts to the varied program of a resort hotel. Smaller scaled carving at lower levels create entries & moments of public engagement with the beach, while large scale carving at upper levels create tower elements containing hotel rooms open to views and daylight. Middle levels remain large site-spanning plates for conferences and entertainment programs, while pool decks and spa programs occur above these nestled within the canyons of hotel towers above. The skin of the original extruded block form is articulated as a rough surface through the use of fritted glass and aluminum extrusions, while carved portions of the block are clear glass rendered shear through the minimal use of extrusions on the exterior side.

1111 PENNSYLVANIA AVE MOB Morris-HZ

Ft Worth TX Project Designer Concept through CD/Pricing Since 2016 I have been the project designer for this 5 level, 120,000 GSF, half speculative, half built to suit, medical office building in Fort Worth Texas. The client’s desire for a maximization of square footage, plus off street structured parking, the complex structural and mechancical requirements of helathcare, and the design guidelines for the neighborhood all came together to create a complex design problem. The building maximizes its footprint on levels 2 and 3 in order to allow for the parking garage to function to Texas standards, and on most of level 4 to maximize rentable square footage. On these levels the office level and garage levels are rendered as one with the continuation of vertical fins that span all 3 levels and help, along with infilled perforated metal panels, to obscure the garage from the ground level. The ground level, level 5 and a portion of level 4 are setback from this maximum envelope by 12’ in order to signify entry and more intimate office and clinic spaces.

BUFFALO BAYOU

EAST

BBP’s East Sector Master Plan offers a long-term vision for the trails, open spaces, and neighborhoods along Buffalo Bayou East between I-69 and the Port Houston Turning Basin. Informed by significant community input, the plan envisions a network of new waterfront open spaces closely integrated with existing upland neighborhoods, and seeks to bring greater activity to the waterfront and stronger connections to the neighborhoods. As is outlined on the following pages, the plan is guided by four key principles: Authentic, Connected, Inclusive, and Resilient.

BUFFALO BAYOU EAST MASTER PLAN

Morris-HZ (collaboration with Michael Van Vaulkenburgh Associates) Houston TX Project Designer/Urban Planner Master planning, community engagement Since 2017 I have worked with Morris/Huitt-Zollars’ Urban planning team as a designer and planner/consultant on a number of collaborative studies with landscape architecture firm Michael Van Vaulkenburgh Associates out of Brooklyn and Cambridge Mass. One such study was commissioned by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership of Houston. The BBP has garnered international attention for its’ creation of Houston’s Buffalo Bayou park which took an otherwise unsightly urban bayou and turned it into one of the best linear park systems in the world. That park spanned from Houston’s downtown, miles west into some of the most affluent neighborhoods in Houston. Buffalo Bayou East was a project commissioned by the BBP to imagine a similar linear park spanning from Downtown Houston for 5 miles to the east through some of Houston’s poorest, and most industrial neighborhoods. Our team won the project in part thanks to our deep understanding of what would make this project uniquely Houston. Rather than turn our back to the industrial character, we embraced it. How could we leverage existing park assets and work to connect neighborhoods previously separated from the waterfront by heavy active industry, to their natural assets? Working under the guidance planner Christof Spieler in our office, we came up with the thesis of the project in a series of “Industrial Wedge” diagrams that simply illustrated the issues and possible design solutions (pictured on next page). This ultimately won us the project, and our main role on the master planning team became connectivity across the system. The main product that came out of this was a series greenways that would connect neighborhoods to the park, and act as green fingers reaching out to bring the public in to the new park system. Colored Plans by MVVA

01

WEDGE

a void currently exists between the eastern sector of Buffalo Bayou & it’s surrounding neighborhoods

02

GREEN SPACE

addition of parks & trails remidies this by connecting the western & eastern ends

03

INDUSTRIAL

active long-term industrial uses will continue to isolate large swaths of surrounding neighborhoods

MEGA INFORMAL: A MUNDANEUM Rice University Istanbul, Turkey ACADEMIC Professor Neyran Turan

This project for a Mundanuem (world knowledge museum & institute of knowledge) in Istanbul proposed a forest of irregularly spaced and sized circular nodes across the ground level of the site. They become light cores, program spaces (private inside, public outside), and structural members. Programmaticly, on the ground level the forest system becomes a series of follies containing amphitheaters, cafes, and foyers for the institute. Thin envelops are introduced to formalize these select moments, while the rest of the space is left exposed as a landscape connected to the fabric of Istanbul. One level up, the envelopes become a singular entity, spanning the entirety of the site, which gains action in its murmuration and undulation so as to produce a thinner form that bends in on itself much of the way. This produces a singular space that contains much of the institutes’ library and office program, and remains thin enough so that there is a strong dialogue between inside and outside. This is charged by the constant, smooth, undulation of the envelope which bends back on itself across the site to produce a blurring of programmatic and urban distinctions. The envelope’s relationship to the forestsystem appears to be one of indifference: there is equal chance that one occupies this field from the exterior or the interior, or from program to program. At certain moments trees in the forest become light shafts, private programs, or cuts down to the ground. On the next level the envelope spans only half the length of the site, yet becomes more robust and undulates less; creating the effect of a more autonomous span-object. A less public library and offices are found here, and the forest system is used in the same manner as below. One more level is added, which is a hybrid between the two levels below it in that its envelope produces both an object and an undulation, but this time the object and undulation respond more to its own context (the level below and the forest system) rather than the fabric of the immediate urban environment. The undulation creates a dialogue of voids and overhangs relative to the semi-private library below, that still has a visual connection to the public below, but begins to generate its own interiorized public. The mundaneum creates tools capable of producing an architectural urbanism of layered atmospheres.

EAST END ANNEX Rice University Houston TX ACADEMIC Professor Dawn Finley

A series of conceptual studies contrasting localized structural moves against monumental form, were layered with the stresses of a diverse program, and emergent movement patterns, inherent in a municipal complex. The misalignment between form, trajectories, systems of control, and program, emerged as a generator of civic complexity; that is, the more program cut across and against the systems and forms, the more it invigorated the whole system. On the site, this concept is packaged into a thin, long, and tall vertical slab that separates itself from the immediate context of the East End neighborhood of Houston. The monumental form anchors a latent centrality in the fabric and framed two public plazas created by the proposed destruction and creation in the fabric. Internally, the system is anchored by four elevator cores that fall away as the tower moves up, ending, on the top floor, with only two cores at either end. Spanning between these cores a thirty foot wide space contains explicit program such as administrative offices, libraries, auditoriums, seminar rooms, and other municipal programs. A ten foot wide corridor, acting as a membrane, wraps this interior program network, and is used as circulation from one part of the network to the next, queing-up space for programs that require it, and eventually some programs that take over either one side or both sides of this membrane as they cannot be contained in the core thirty foot space. What emerges is a membrane that is highly differentiated depending the particular form of building (structured by various cuts through the slab), and the particular program in that zone, rendered semi-transparent through the tower’s perforated metal mesh. The five main programmatic regions that were established were grouped in vertical zones in the slab and maintained their own logic to each other, independent of the interior system or the overall form of the building. The misalignment between these aspects, packaged into a clear, semi-transparent, form, allows the municipal annex to pulsate with differentiated intensities; sometimes related to the use of programs, use of the general flow of the system, or use of the form of the building.

NEW KAI TAK: MASTER PLAN Rice University Hong Kong ACADEMIC Professor Albert Pope

Part of a 3 member master planning team exploring the redevelopment of the former site of Kai Tak Airport in East Kowloon, Hong Kong. The ethos of this project is to find legible urban form that celebrates Hong Kong’s particular urbanism of packaged density. It rejects Hong Kong’s contemporary tendency towards timid, westernized and nostalgic development. As a member of the master-planning team, my contribution explored the binary relationships between voids (limiting development vs laissez-faire urban practices) and a heterotopia of pure Hong Kong urban form along the existing runway island.

Drawings done in collaboration

Independent master plan scheme. This scheme studies a juxtaposition between the phenomenal (contextual) and packaged (housing estates) forms of density; later developed into “New Kowloon Walled City part of master plan.

NEW KAI TAK: CITY ISLAND Rice University Hong Kong ACADEMIC Professor Albert Pope

Additionally I was charged with designing the “City Island” part of the New Kai Tak scheme. As a strong counter part to the residential, packaged density of the other island, “New Kowloon Walled City”, “City Island” had the role of becoming a public destination within the scheme. This was charged by undulating planes that have a connection to the waterfront that is rare in Hong Kong, and the incorporation of an existing cruise ship terminal and stopping point on our proposed monorail system. It is charged with the only program type that is truly public in Hong Kong: retail, specifically high-end.

Logo designed for Greater Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium, whom I worked with along with Huitt Zollars in a project managerial/design position

GRAPHIC WORK

Rice University/Personal

In addition to a number of websites and logos I have designed, including my last firm’s website (Huitt-Zollars), I have also done a number of conceptual graphic projects through seminars at Rice School of Architecture. The school’s obsession with graphics, and these projects, drove my interest in graphic design as something beyond simply the packaging of visual content and information. It can become something more akin to architecture itself through the use of structure, pacing/curation, emotion, and figural relationships to elevate it to the level of art.

BAUEN in

INDUSTRY

AFTER NOW/MATERIAL

EISEN EISENBETON

ARCHITECTURE

48 pages 54 pages

At the beginning of Bauen in Frankreich, the ‘PRELIMINARY REMARK’, Gideon states that this book is designed for the h u r r i e d r e a d e r. He breaks down the hierarchy of the book by stating that the path of development is to follow the images. These images, specifically their composition and dialogs together, are the primary substance of Bauen. The next level of detail, are the captions accompanying the images, and seem to emerge directly from the organic composition of the images themselves. Finally, if the modern subject has the time or capacity to do so, they can enter the body text which further details the imagedriven argument. This structure is implied through the composition of each page, and sometimes is literally directed via arrows.

László Moholy-Nagy’s influence on the book can be seen in an absolute faith in sequential, fragmentary, images to reveal a relevant narrative to the modern subject. Gideon himself states in Bauen “only film can make the new architecture intelligible!”, and this plays itself out in not only the dominance of the image, but imagery that abstracts and dematerializes itself to promise new open material existences to an operative modernism.

Bauen in Frankreich, published in 1928 (the same year as Gideon’s role in founding CIAM) by Leipzig and in collaboration with László Moholy-Nagy, is a real-time, image-driven, narrative of the modern movement’s relationship to history; specifically the history of material influences, and a tailoring of that history as a projection for contemporary technique. Reyner Banham defines it as “the modern movement’s view of its own history”. Bauen operates in a manner relevant to the modern subject, what Gideon calls in the context of the book the “HURRIED READER”. As such, it was to be easily understood for those without the time, nor the intellect, for dense text-driven narrative. This simplicity follows in the structure of the book itself. The first section, Frankreich (France) is a 15 page narrative on the role of the architect-engineer (constructor), specifically in France, played in the shaping of a certain attitude that permeated through to Gideon’s modernism. This section sets up the next two, Eisen (Iron) and Eisenbeton (Ferroconcrete), which are image-driven narratives on the role industrial materials and their applications play on the shaping of the movement.

The collaboration with Moholy-Nagy is revealed in the book’s specific use of photography. Not only are images the main substance of the narrative of Bauen, but their specific articulation and deployment throughout augment an idea about a reducing architectural form to an abstraction of points and lines. The hurried reading of the images, their obscured relationships to foreground and background, the use of obscure lighting techniques and angles, all sought to make the book read more cinematic then as a structured text. Gideon and Moholy-Nagy undermine the conventional, static, conception of imagery, associated with frame and perspective, into an abstract form that they can simultaneously claim is an inevitable result of, and operator on, cultural forces of their day.

The arrows direct the hurried reader at local moments where Gideon identifies a 19th century model of particular material-dematerialization having a direct impact on the operative modernism of his day. Terms such as “only now” and “after this” precede statements on modernism’s ethical dimension.

The seemingly simple and structured layout of spreads is countered by the hand-crafted layout of the book. An overlap of the entire Eisen section reveals that there is a constantly shifting, fragmented, body inside this frame, responding to local and semilocal narratives and compositions.

FURNITURE Personal

Lately I have been developing a series of furniture pieces inspired by ribbing techniques and Japanese joinery. The concept is a series of CNC machined flat pieces (birch plywood) that join together through slots and hold only through their own gravity; without the use of glue or mechanical fasteners. My first prototype was my son’s crib. It is made of four walls, two cross bars that become the legs and lateral support, and adjustable height cross-rails for 3 different mattress configurations. It is finished with a food-grade, natural, shellac sealer. The crib not only supports his weight, but also that of a 200 pound adult male jumping up and down inside of it. It is light enough for one adult to move, and is able to be broken down and reassembled in less than 10 minutes. I am also developing a series of shelving units, chairs, tables, and children’s furniture.
