Dear friends of the Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival, we are very happy to have you here as our guests for the 7th edition of the Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival in our beautiful valley of the rainbows. We had a great festival last year, the first year that we had added blues acts to the line-up. It's heart-warming to notice that the word of this small but high class festival has gotten around in the Jazz and Blues world, and that we're counting many more visitors this year that came a long way to be a part of the unique experience of the only Jazz&Blues Festival in Central America. The formula of combining the immense natural beauty of this land between two oceans, of high mountains, of an exuberant flora and fauna and endless , unspoiled beaches with a festival of international high-class Jazz and Blues seems to work. This festival has an immense potential to grow. Sadly, the Panamanian Tourism Authority still hasn't taken notice of this potential, and has denied us any financial support for 7 years in a row

The Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival Foundation The Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival Foundation is a charitable private not-for-profit foundation dedicated to support and enrich cultural life in Boquete and beyond. It is run exclusively by unpaid volunteers. The main activities are the Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival, a series of monthly free concerts in Boquete, and the support and promotion of musical entertainment in local schools. Former general director Antonio Singh started the festival from scratch in 2007, and stayed in this position until 2011. From humble beginnings, through ups and downs, the festival, though still small in numbers, has become a well-known fixture on the calendar of musical events in Panama. Despite always having had to struggle with financial constraints and very low budgets, Antonio together with a small group of dedicated volunteers has succeeded in keeping the festival alive for 5 years. The 2012 festival was organized by the new director Hans-J. Lebuser who also became the president of the foundation.

now. Even more so, it is truly amazing what a small community like Boquete is able to achieve when hands join hands and hundreds of people and small businesses come together to make things happen. This festival is a true community affair, it is an allvolunteer event where nobody of the organizers and volunteers is getting paid. It's always a nerve-wrecking roller coaster ride to get it going but once the festival is here it's going to be pure fun. Thank you all for taking the pain to come here to join us in the celebrations. A BIG thank you to all our sponsors without whom this event wouldn't be possible, and a very special Thank You to our principal sponsor Panamonte Brands LLC. Makers of The Smoothest Rum on Earth™ for their extraordinary support of this festival! We hope y'all will have loads of fun , and that you'll have nothing but good memories to take home. Let the music play! Laissez les bon temps roulez! Don't stop the dance! Thanks for being here! Enjoy our festival! Hans-J. Lebuser President Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival Foundation

The Boquete Jazz Festival goes Blues..... In 2011 we decided to rename the festival 'Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival' in order to reflect the decision to get the Blues to Panama. The March 14, 2012 festival featured top-class Blues acts in addition to Latin Jazz bands from Central and South America and elsewhere. It was rated to have been the best music festival that ever took place in the Chiriqui highlands and attracted visitors from all over Panama, Costa Rica, the US and even from Europe! Our vision is to firmly place Boquete on the national and international map of Jazz and Blues events that are not to be missed. Our mission is to promote the musical arts and tourism in the Chiriqui highlands and beyond by attracting growing numbers of Panamanian as well as international music-aficionados to this beautiful area. Our dedication is to support musical education at schools in the Boquete area. To this end 100% of the festival profits go to our Music for Schools program to buy musical instruments and to improve musical education in schools.

As President and Chief Executive Officer of The Blues Foundation, the world's blues music organization, it is my great pleasure to attend the Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival. As a former Assistant General Counsel of the Panama Canal and a resident of Panama for thirteen years, it is great to be back and especially great to have the chance to hear the music that has spread from Memphis to the world. I have travelled to dozens of countries to witness first-hand the impact of blues music on different cultures and I expect that Boquete may be one of the most beautiful places the blues has ever been performed.

The line-up of the 2013 Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival presents an exciting mix of Latin Jazz and Blues, of four Panamanian and four foreign bands, of four bands who have performed in Boquete in earlier years, and of four bands of Jazz and Blues musicians who have never been heard and seen in Panama and Central America before.

Maria Rivas and her Libertango band Venezuela's great Jazz singer, painter and ecological activist Maria Rivas is also coming to Panama with her band for the first time, and we're proud being able to present her at our festival. She astonishes audiences with her mastery of Jazz variations, much in the style of Ella Fitzgerald and other notable divas. Her well-tuned voice, her command of English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, and her considerable personal charm and beauty have built her a large crowd of loyal fans. Also, she has become a leading voice in the region's environmental movement, which has earned her ample recognition. Her musical message as a composer often has ecological undertones. With Maria and her Libertango band from Caracas, Venzuela, Boquete's Jazz aficionados are in for a real treat, and an amazing show! This is going to be another true highlight of the festival!

The Boquete Blues Band (B3) with Yella One of the objectives of the Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival is giving local talents a chance to showcase their art in front of a larger audience. The mixed Panamanian/expat B3 have been honing their skills at local venues and festival fundraisers for years, and at the 2012 festival they did a great job backing up Mitch Woods and Johnny Sansone. They'll be backing up Bob Corritore and Taildragger at the 2013 festival, and they'll have their first well-earned own show on the festival stage on Saturday, March 2, 2013, featuring Boquete's well known vocalist Yella, and special guest Andy Egert from Switzerland on guitar and harp.

Bob Corritore and Taildragger „This boy will one day take my place“ (Howling Wolf). The one and only legendary Taildragger, a Chicago blues legend, and his longtime friend in the Blues, master harp player and blues activist Bob Corritore, owner of the famous Rhythm Room in Phoenix AZ, have played major festivals all over the world, and we're very happy to have them come to Panama for the first time. Their show will definitely be a highlight of the festival!

The Randy Oxford Band

A native of our provincial capital city of David, and a professor of music, Rigoberto Coba (sax) put together an 18 piece big band just for our festival in 2012. That show was their first public performance, closing the 2012 festival with that wonderful big band swing sound! We've been asked many times to get them back for our next festival. We listened, and so they'll be swinging it again on Sunday March3, 2013! This time they'll also be featuring some special guests from the US.

Randy Oxford plays a wild trombone, and anybody who has ever seen and heard his band in action won't forget it! Their show at our festival will also be their first-ever performance in Central America. We're very proud being able to present these great musicians to the Boquete festival audience! Brace yourself, Boquete! You'll be blown away!

Andy Egert Swiss blues award winner, and Switzerland's hardest working bluesman Andy Egert loved Panama and Boquete so much when he came here for the first time in 2012 that he was dying to come back...so we'll have him back as a special guest playing with Boquete's own Bluesband, the B3! You can be sure to see the never tiring Andy sit in and play his guitar and blow his harp at each and every show and jam during the festival! Carlos Ubarte quintet One of the most sought after sax players in Panama! The Boquete audience knows and loves Carlos and his band from previous festival shows. Always good for a pleasant surprise he'll come to Boquete with his Latin Jazz quintet this time, and he has promised to present a completely new and exciting show. We can't wait to see an

Spicy Latin Jazz is a very appropriate name for the music of this band. Playing a very danceable style of Jazz spiced with intricate Latin rhythms they know how to please their audiences. Bandleader Arturo Villareal and his band have played the Boquete Jazz festival before and always got rave reviews, so we're happy to have them back in the highlands once again after an absence of several years!

Spicy Latin Jazzband, Panama

Ron Hacker Raw, lowdown&dirty blues from San Francisco. This is a man who does not just play the Blues, he lived the Blues all his life as he describes it in his book „White Trash Bluesman“. Ron played a great solo show at our 2012 festival but seeing and hearing him play with his band is a totally different treat! For 2013 we'll have him back with his trio, the Hacksaws. Blues can't get much better than this!
