Alumni Impact Report

2022 2023

On March 23, 2024, we will celebrate 189 years since the founding of Albion College. Here, we reflect on our last year and the ways that our alumni engaged with the College as well as accomplishments of our current students. With your continued support, we honor those hallmarks that have been — and always will be — true about VISIT AC CAN! the Albion College experience, while confirming Albion as a leader in liberal arts education. Thank you for your contributions in the last year. With the development of the Albion College Collaborative Alumni Network (AC CAN), including the revitalization of our regional chapters, this is an exciting time for the greater Albion College alumni association. As you read about the impact of our community in the past year, we hope you are inspired to be engaged with the continued growth of our alumni association. With interest or questions, please visit AC CAN at albion.edu/accan and email us at alumniengagement@albion.edu.

Fellow Britons, When I graduated in 1961, I walked across the commencement steps knowing that Albion College had already had a profound impact on me. That remains exponentially true for me as the years go by. It is my privilege and honor to serve our dear College and network of remarkable alumni as the current president of the Alumni Association. The Alumni Association Board of Directors, or “Alumni Board,” is composed of 24 members from across the country and representing a span of class years. Our mission and role is to help facilitate connections among alumni, between alumni and the College, and among alumni and students. All of us have a unique Albion story, and we all have common “evergreen” elements of the Albion College experience that connect us. These include: close relationships with faculty and staff; experiential learning opportunities; leadership development; and applying a liberal arts, criticalthinking lens to find creative solutions that best serve our professional industries and communities. As you reflect on your own experience and continued relationship with “Albion, dear Albion,” and as you review the impact that you and fellow alumni have had on Albion College in the last year, I hope you will also think of the ways that you would like to engage and support in the coming year. I encourage you to reach out to me and/or other members of the Alumni Board to share your “evergreen” moments and discuss ways that you would like to be involved with the College. Please visit albion.edu/alumni-board to view our Alumni Board roster and connect. Stories of Impact Your contributions through philanthropy, volunteerism, and participation in Albion College events help to support the experiences of our current students. Below are examples of a few programs that our alumni have impacted.

SCHOLARSHIP Year after year, students cite affordability as being a major deciding factor between Albion and similar institutions. Over the past five years, donors have contributed an average of $2,412,016 per year to scholarships, thus making an Albion College education accessible for hundreds of students.

FURSCA FURSCA saw a surge in participation this past summer. With 41 participants and even more proposals submitted, it was the highest level of engagement the foundation has seen since 2019. Among the participants were Isaac Hautala, ’25, and Rana Huwais, ’24. The current junior and senior conducted projects in the fields of earth/environment and fine art, respectively, thus demonstrating the wide scope of disciplines represented on campus this summer. Despite the differences in their studies, both students noted that one key element of FURSCA is uninterrupted time to explore a topic of their choosing. Another vital component includes developing close connections with faculty. This is something Hautala said sets Albion apart. “Having the FURSCA opportunity and the time to do that was an experience unique to Albion. I wouldn’t have gotten that at another school,” said Hautala. “I really got a valuable connection with the professors I’ll be seeing around campus, which is great. As a professional going forward, I think this was a really great experience to learn about being a geologist and how that process works.” Huwais concurred, naming the faculty as something that makes Albion, Albion. “I really think the most important part of this college is the faculty, because the faculty creates the passion in the students,” Huwais said. “The faculty creates the environments that keep this place going. And I think as long as they are given the space to do that, and given the ability to do so, then I think this place will remain evergreen.” Rana Huwais, ’24

CLASS GIVING Albion Community Internship Endowment The Class of 1960 Albion Community Internship Endowment (ACIE) is an internship program in which students are afforded the opportunity to learn and grow professionally while serving the community of Albion. Most recently, Alia Olan, ’23, experienced the impact of ACIE firsthand. From the winter of 2022 up until her graduation in the spring of 2023, Olan worked alongside community leader Dr. Harry Bonner in Albion Community Substance Abuse Prevention Services. Olan, who majored in psychology with a minor in art, had a unique opportunity to combine both of her passions in her ACIE experience. Working with high school students who are in prevention services with Dr. Bonner, Olan showed students her art, talked about her own stories and experiences, and encouraged them to use art as a way to open up and express themselves. A major takeaway for Olan was the ability to witness the impact and gravity of her and Dr. Bonner’s work in real time. I really enjoyed working with kids who were younger than me and having the space to be open about my experiences with minority issues,” Olan said. “Sometimes, it can be kind of hard to read them and see if they’re actually listening or if they’re just rolling their eyes. But they really reacted and opened up to me.” Read more about ACIE interns at albion.edu/acie

During my brief time here at Albion College, I have seen firsthand the passion that our alumni share for their alma mater. Hearing your stories of success and how Albion, Dear Albion has impacted your lives is incredibly inspiring. It is evident that the bond between alumni and the College is strong and that the education and experiences gained at Albion have had a lasting impact. This bond is proof of the value of a liberal arts education provided here and the sense of community that exists among alumni.
