The rain, it did fall

3

Our photographers

From Sproat Lake to the Hump, dawn to dark on July 15, 2011, Alberni Valley residents proved their mettle as they weathered inclement weather and went about their day.

F

or the first time since the Alberni Valley News began its annual Day in the Life photo project five years ago, the weather did not co-operate for us. On Friday, July 15—a day we chose arbitrarily, in the hopes it would be sunny, warm and productive—seven photographers set out to photograph our community from dawn to dark. It was a departure from our usual 24 hours, but we were confident that the community would be buzzing with activity. Perhaps we were too confident. We watched the weather forecasts with chagrin, and packed our gear the night before, preparing to get wet: rain jackets, ball caps, and plastic bags for the cameras. Extra footwear, just in case. And we also packed our ingenuity, as many of the outdoor endeavours we were counting on were either cancelled, didn’t happen or were moved inside. We went with the flow: we improvised, searched more corners of the Alberni Valley and went inside along with the people. Most of all, we discovered that a little rain may fall—and honestly, we’re so thankful we didn’t choose July 16 for our photo day, as there was an absolute deluge that afternoon—but it doesn’t deter hardy Port Albernians from their pursuits. As the cloud cover became thicker and more ominous, people pulled out their umbrellas and rain gear, and went on with their day. A few were even out there power washing things like sidewalks and city hall, and West Coast Slam had kids participating in water balloon and Super Soaker competitions. Through it all, we heard little grumbling and appreciated the quick, warm smiles that greeted us as we asked people from Sproat Lake to the visitors’ centre if we could take their photos. We feel privileged that people so willingly opened their homes and places of business to us. The Melbourne-Malone family, who welcomed daughter Nylah Charlotte into the family just 24 hours earlier, hardly blinked when a damp, bedraggled photographer was escorted into the maternity ward at West Coast General Hospital, and asked permission to photograph their new family unit. Seeing Nylah sleeping comfortably in father Brad Melbourne’s hands while mother Kelly Malone and some friends watched was one bright spot in an otherwise gray day. As part of our Day in the Life project, we gave people in the community the chance to send us their photos, also taken on July 15. Several answered the challenge, including Sandy McRuer of Rainbird Excursions, who managed to avoid the rain while photographing the gardens at the Rollin Art Centre, and was sheltered from the elements during a walk through the beautiful foliage of Roger Creek Park. This year’s winner of A Day in Your Life is Karin Ryley, who captured a nest of new hummingbirds outside her kitchen window. You can see her winning image and others on page 23. We thank all of you who participated in our contest, and issue a challenge to others to look for our contest next year, and send in your photos. We’ll let you know which day we’ll be photographing. WINNER! 9:55 a.m. Sproat Lake This nest full of baby hummingbirds is located in a tree right outside Karin Ryley’s home in Sproat Lake, and not well hidden, says Ryley. “When I go check on my flowers or my three little chickens the momma hummingbird flies out then comes back after I am gone,” she says.
