Es una de las cascadas más espectaculares del Parque Nacional, que salva el desnivel existente entre el valle colgado de Ratera y el principal de Sant Maurici. El sector de Sant Maurici es el más oriental del Parque, y es accesible desde el valle leridano de Espot (Comarca de Pallars Sobirà). El Parque Nacional es una magnífica muestra del relieve de alta montaña sobre rocas graníticas.

Destacan los bosques subalpinos de abetos y el pino negro, muy condicionados por la altitud, que oscila entre los 1.200 y 3.033 metros, y la orientación de los valles.

Frozen rocks at the Ratera Falls

Se cumplen 50 años del Parque Nacional de Aigüestortes i Sant Maurici. Más de 40.000 hectáreas de lagos, arroyos y bosques en el corazón del Pirineo leridano.

The National Park of Aigüestortes i Sant Maurici has just turned 50 years old. Over 40,000 hectares of lakes, streams and woodland in the heart of Lleida’s Pyrenees.

This is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the National Park, crashing down the difference in height between the steep Ratera Valley and the main gorge of Sant Maurici.

The Sant Maurici sector is the easternmost area of the Park and is accessible from the Valley of Espot in the province of Lérida (Pallars Sobirà district). The National Park provides a magnificent display of near-Alpine relief on granite rocks.

Noteworthy are the dark pine and fir forests, strongly affected by the altitude (between 1,200 and 3,033 metres) and the alignment of the valleys.

El parque es agua, es imagen en movimiento y también sonido.

Es relativamente frecuente sorprender a algunos corzos que, a primera hora de la mañana o al anochecer acuden a beber a este torrente rodeados de llanos (Vado de Cabanes). A él se accede atravesando el bosque de Gerdar (‘gerd’ significa frambuesa en catalán) y siguiendo una fuerte pendiente por el barranco del Cabanes. Este torrente inicia el paseo al Bosque de La Mata, el mayor abetal de la vertiente meriodional de los Pirineos.

Tiene la singulariad de ser una masa forestal sin fragmentación.

The park is water, images in movement and also sounds.

It is relatively common, in the early hours of morning or at nightfall, to come across a few deer coming to drink in this gully surrounded by flatlands (Vado de Cabanes). It can be reached through the Gerdar woods (‘gerd’ means raspberry in Catalan) then up the steep slope through Cabanes Gully.

The river begins here its journey through the largest forest of firs on the southern slopes of the Pyrenees. The La Mata forest is unusual in that it is one whole mass of woodland.

Y, a pesar de ello, el parque no ofrece un aspecto líquido.

Esta roca impermeable e insoluble no deja que el agua penetre en su interior y la obliga a permanecer en la superficie.

El Lac de Rius es el resultado de la acción de los glaciares del cuaternario. En este periodo, el hielo ocupó estas zonas creando valles en forma de ‘U’, circos y más de un centenar de lagos como éste. El Lac de Rius, rodeado de una crestería rocosa, tiene un nivel más bajo que el resto, pues el agua se filtra por una galería subterránea hasta el Lac de Mar.

Nonetheless, the park is far from being entirely liquid in appearance. This impermeable and insoluble rock is waterproof, which makes the water remain on the surface.

The Lac de Rius is the result of the action of glaciers from the Quaternary Era. During this period, the ice filled these valleys and created the typical ‘U’ shapes, girdles and over a hundred lakes such as this one. The Lac de Rius, surrounded by rocky crests, is generally lower because the water filters away through an underground channel to the Lac de Mar.

Turberas del Estany Negre, Vall de Boí La roca granítica es el padre y el agua la madre. Y de este matrimonio nace la vida en el parque. El río se deshace en meandros que recorren terrenos sumergidos en turberas.

Los vegetales son capaces de colonizar todos los rincones y ambientes, juegan y se encaraman por las grietas de las rocas. Este estany de 35 metros de profundidad y de aguas oscuras evidencia el poder erosivo del glaciar. Es un buen punto para visitar el valle Colieto, los estanys bajo las agujas de Travessani o la cima del Montardo.

Cascada de Sant Esperit El agua es, además, la gran escultora del parque. Durante miles de años ha creado con sus dedos hábiles las formas que hoy nos sorprenden y embelesan. Hubo un tiempo en que descendía en forma de glaciar por los valles, desgastando la gran masa de granito y tallándola a su antojo. Hoy se complace en retocar aquí y allá su obra inicial nunca acabada. Así, la cascada de Sant Esperit es un magnífico ejemplo geomorfológico de la acción de las aguas sobre el lecho rocoso, que da lugar a un perfil del río escalonado formando así diversas pozas, como la de esta imagen, llamadas ‘marmitas de gigante’.

Waterfall of Sant Esperit In addition, water is the great sculpting force at work in the park. For thousands of years, its skilful fingers have created the shapes that captivate and astound us today. There was a time when the water came down these valleys in the form of a glacier, wearing down the great mass of granite. Nowadays, it merely makes a few adjustments here and there to its forever unfinished task. Thus, the waterfall of Sant Esperit is a magnificent geomorphological display of the effect of water on the bedrock, giving rise to a stepped profile, forming various natural pools known as ‘giant’s cauldrons’.

The granitic rock is the father and water is the mother. Out of this marriage springs life in the park. The river dwindles down into meandering streams running through peat bogs.

Plants are capable of colonizing any nook and corner, clambering up over the cracks in the rocks. The Estany Negre is 35 metres deep and its dark waters bear witness to the erosive power of the glacier. It is a good location from which to visit the Valley of Colieto, the lakes under the Travessani spires or the summit of Mount Montardo.

Els Encantats (2.745 m) y río Escrita En invierno el agua es la madre que protege a su descendencia. En forma sólida, la nieve extiende su manto sobre el parque y protege la vida de las temperaturas invernales que alcanzan los 25º bajo cero. Bajo la nieve, no desciende de 0º. Ésta cubre la cima más elevada: el pico del Comaloforno con sus 3.033 metros, aunque el más conocido es el macizo de Els Encantats (en la imagen), dos moles de 2.747 m se elevan frente al río Escrita y al estany de Sant Maurici. La tradición popular dice que su forma corresponde a dos cazadores petrificados por no acudir a misa un domingo.

Els Encantats (2,745 m) and the River Escrita In winter, water acts as a mother protecting her brood. As solid snow, it covers the park in a white blanket to protect plant life from the midwinter temperatures (25º below zero). Under the snow, it is never below freezing. The mountains remain covered, including the highest peak of Comaloforno at 3.033 metres, although the massif of Els Encantats is better known.

These two huge outcrops (shown here) climb to 2,747 metres opposite the River Escrita and the lake of Sant Maurici. Popular tradition has it that their shape corresponds to two huntsmen turned to stone for not attending Mass on a Sunday.

Estany de Llebreta al atardecer

El juego cómplice de agua y rocas multiplica por dos el paisaje, aumentando, si cabe, el efecto espectacular sobre la retina.

En el sector de Aigüestortes se encuentra el estany de Llebreta, el único lago que no es de origen glaciar en todo el parque sino que nace por corrimiento de tierras. El resto de estanys sufrieron una fuerte sedimentación por la brutal acción erosiva del glaciar, que formó prados donde los ríos y los barrancos se dividen en meandros de aguas llamados ‘aigüestortes’ (aguas torcidas). En la umbría de Llebreta crece el mejor bosque mixto de caducifolios y coníferas del parque.

The combined efforts of water and rocks have duplicated the landscape, increasing, if that were possible, the spectacular impact on the beholder. The Aigüestortes sector includes Llebreta, the only lake not formed originally by a glacier but through a shift in the land. The rest of the lagoons suffered severe sedimentation due to the erosive effects of the glacier, which formed meadows in which the rivers and gullies sub-divide into meandering streams known as ‘aigüestortes’. In the shadows of Llebreta, you can find the park’s best mixed forest of deciduous trees and conifers.

Nacido en Barcelona en 1958, es diseñador de formación y naturalista de vocación. Su obra divulga la fotografía como herramienta de acercamiento a la naturaleza.

Born in Barcelona in 1958, he is a nature-lover by vocation and a designer by training. His portfolio illustrates how to use photography as a tool to get closer to nature.
