Much like Spring Summer 2013 LOVE & LIES, this season’s BLACKNESS & SILENCE is a hauntingly beautiful love story. It continues where the previous collection ended. “All I want is blackness. Blackness and silence.” Sylvia Plath’s prose was a great source of inspiration for this collection. The trees are “black” - ominous; instead of bearing fruit they are black, haunting in Plath’s mind. There is an absence of warmth coming from her despair, a dreadful blackness; her mother’s legacy is silence. Just as how Plath provided the heart, American painter Andrew Wyeth gave us the body for this campaign. There’s a certain spirit about the way he portrays his subjects. We identify with his love of rural landscapes, sense of romance and artistic traditions. The painting Winter 1946, began a lifelong focus
on emotion and Wyeth’s themes of loss and the fragility of life. Christina’s World completed in 1948, 3 years prior to his father’s death. Wyeth’s work underwent a significant change after the loss. This world famous painting epitomizes these traits, and conveys the impression that its an outward expression of Wyeth’s inner grief. This season, we focused on the structure and textures of a garment. Its a tactile connection we have with our customers and something we hold dear. We hope that BLACKNESS & SILENCE would be a source of comfort and inspiration to all. “Grief doesn’t change you. It reveals you.”
