o say Happy New Year in March seems odd but this is the first issue of Aircraft IT MRO for 2018. And don’t imagine that we’ve been taking it easy for the past couple of months: far from it. Now in our seventh year of publication, we’re immensely proud and pleased at the way in which Aircraft IT has grown both in the number of vendors associated with and contributing to the publication, and in its standing as the go-to resource for airlines’ and operators’ Engineering departments as well as MROs keeping up with the latest developments in and researching the aviation MRO/M&E IT market. But, not to rest on our laurels, we wanted to make Aircraft IT MRO eJournal even more useful for users and readers. So we’ve revamped the publication with a fresh new look which will make it clearer to view on tablets and mobile phones as well on the traditional laptop and desk PC screens. In short, you’ll be able to more easily read your latest edition of Aircraft IT MRO wherever you are and on whatever device you have. However, one thing that won’t change is what we deliver. That will continue to be real Case Studies from other professionals doing similar jobs to those of readers in similar working environments where they have faced and successfully addressed similar challenges. And there will still be White Papers offering the latest thoughts in the sector from the

people who are doing the thinking. This issue includes a great case study from EGAT about how they selected, implemented and integrated a new MRO/M&E solution in a busy MRO business. Plus we have another excellent case study from MRO Wingbox Aviation about the IT challenges for an independent MRO offering fleet technical management and CAMO services as a third party service. In addition, this issue has three valuable white papers. In the first, John Hancock interviewed consultant Rob Saunders on the value of moving from paper to data and how to turn data into dollars; this is part one of a two-part article. Also in two parts is the paper from Steve Sayers, FLYdocs on pre-management data and the opportunities that digitalization opens in that topic. Finally and very topically, Saravanan Rajarajan of Ramco Systems explains about future proofing the supply chain to ensure that aircraft spend more time in the air generating revenue. Boeing subsidiary AerData is growing its leasing software presence in China under an agreement, announced at the end of October 2017, with Everbright Financial Leasing Co., Ltd., that will consolidate data from multiple sources using a single Corporate Management System (CMS) platform to reduce risk for lessors by giving them full control and oversight of asset values, contract information and technical details. CMS supports aircraft leasing business processes and asset management including maintenance, upgrade and flight records for individual airplanes. “The AerData CMS application was a logical choice to support our rapidly expanding fleet,” said Wang Hua, head of Aviation, Everbright Financial Leasing. “CMS will be the foundation for all technical and financial processes used to manage aircraft leasing.” More than 60 leasing companies worldwide use AerData systems to support their business. AMOS supporting Boeing’s Global Fleet Care Successful go-live of first common customer

Swiss AviationSoftware (Swiss-AS) was pleased to announce, in early November 2017, its involvement with Boeing regarding the deployment of AMOS for Boeing’s Global Fleet Care services. Low-cost-carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle is the first airline to rely on Boeing’s lifecycle solution in combination with AMOS. In June 2017, Norwegian’s newly arrived Boeing 737 MAX fleet went live in AMOS and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet will follow early next year. By then, the entire fleet of Norwegian will be managed in AMOS, as Norwegian is a long-term AMOS customer and has controlled the 737-800 fleet in the Swiss M&E software since 2010. With AMOS running smoothly in a Microsoft Azure cloud for Fleet Care, a global access for all parties involved has been facilitated. Thomas Cook Group Airlines Go Live on Conduce eTechLog8 including AMOS integration Conduce Group announced in mid-November 2017 that Thomas Cook Group Airlines has commenced live operation with its eTechLog8 software solution. Following an extensive market evaluation and selection process the airline chose the Conduce next generation eTechLog8 software as its preferred solution for the whole of the Thomas Cook Group Airlines. eTechLog8 is an aircraft centric application that fully eliminates the paper Aircraft Technical Log, Deferred Defect Log and Cabin Defect Log. This Windows 10 native application can be routinely used offline, only requiring an internet connection to transmit data when appropriate. A fully functioning web application back end (eCentral8) is used to configure the system and monitor/manage all journey log data, defects and defect actions, and all associated line maintenance activities for the fleet. Adoption of the eTechLog8 solution brings many benefits to the airline including significantly increased data accuracy, more immediate access to the data across the business and, with full auto-ingestion of data into their Swiss-AS AMOS system, MAINTROL have a real-time view of the fleet at all times. HAECO Hong Kong Introduces Mobile Mechanic App HAECO Hong Kong, a member of the HAECO Group, announced at the end of November 2017 that the company has introduced a mobile application – ULTRAMAIN® Mobile Mechanic™ – for use in its Light Maintenance operations at Hong Kong International Airport. To improve operational efficiency in an environmentally-friendly manner, HAECO Hong Kong collaborated with Ultramain Systems, Inc., an international asset management and logistics software service provider, to enhance ULTRAMAIN’s Mobile Mechanic to meet HAECO’s paperless needs. Cathay Pacific Airways (Cathay Pacific) provided support during the project and the airline has become the launch customer for HAECO’s implementation of Mobile Mechanic – making use of the system and application. This application allows technical personnel to access electronic task cards, receive job assignments and create non-routine task cards as well as sign off task cards electronically through mobile devices. The airline customer can now have real-time monitoring of job status. The HAECO Hong Kong Light Maintenance team handles over 1,000 light maintenance checks (planned maintenance inputs) annually for Cathay Pacific. The implementation of Mobile Mechanic will help save 640,000 sheets of paper per year. Both parties plan to extend the application to cover Cathay Pacific’s Airbus A330 fleet in the first half of 2018. It has been a busy time at Rusada® not only with new customers for the Envision® maintenance solution but also with a development to bring Rusada’s solutions and services closer to fast growing markets. First of all, at the end of October 2017, Rusada’s maintenance solution, Envision® was deployed by Solomon Airlines as part of a technology refresh and consolidation project. The airline is the national carrier for the Solomon Islands and operates a fleet of Twin Otters and a Dash 8 for its domestic operations and an A320 aircraft for international flights. Before the project, Air Solomon’s maintenance information was managed using several separate legacy systems. The airline identified that consolidating many of these processes into a single system would increase situational awareness and improve regulatory compliance monitoring. Simon Obi, Solomon Airline’s CAMO Manager said: “We recognized that we would require a centralized maintenance information system to scale with growing requirements.” Since signing the agreement in August, Solomon Airlines has been part of the Rusada ‘hyper-care’ program and is already live with the system.

On another continent, South African based Solenta Aviation selected Rusada’s engineering and maintenance technology to support the management of airworthiness across their fleet of 45 aircraft in an agreement signed in early November 2017. The ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) operation will use Rusada’s Envision® nGen technology initially within their CAMO department, before rolling out additional functionality for procurement, logistics

stock management and production, as well as personnel scheduling and training — all as part of a five year agreement. The operator conducted an extensive review of the major players in this technology space before clearly identifying Rusada as being their preferred long-term partner to deliver on their business objectives. The deployment of Envision nGen was expected to kick-off in December 2017 and the phased implementation will mean Solenta will be live with components of the system before the end of Q2 2018. Moving to another high growth area, Falcon Aviation Services, the Abu Dhabi based executive jet and helicopter charter company, has selected Rusada’s Envision® nGen solution as their replacement Maintenance and Engineering technology platform. With a managed fleet of over 30 aircraft, Falcon also provide an extensive range of third party MRO services and are in the process of establishing a new facility in Dubai. Announcing the deal in early December 2017, Falcon’s Chief Operating Officer, Capt. Raman Oberoi said: “As part of our ambitious growth plans, we embarked on a thorough review of our maintenance and engineering systems and identified Envision nGen from Rusada as a critical component to support our strategy.” Falcon’s evaluation process highlighted the flexibility of the Envision nGen system in being able to accommodate the operator’s specific requirements as a key deciding factor in Rusada’s selection. Rusada’s CEO Julian Stourton added: “Falcon’s decision to award this project to Rusada is a further endorsement of our approach and we are delighted to be working with yet another leading operator”. Cathay Pacific Airways rolls out the latest mobile Electronic Logbook Following the successful deployment of the all new iPad based Electronic Logbook (ELB) from Ultramain Systems on its A330 fleet in November 2017, Hong Kong based Cathay Pacific Airways received operational approval in mid-December from Hong Kong’s aviation authority (HK CAD) to operate ELB mobile on its Airbus A350 fleet. Electronic Logbook software replaces the longstanding airline industry paper technical logs, which have been used by airlines. Aviation regulations require the aircraft captain to record all defects in the aircraft’s technical log if they could impact safety of flight. Electronic Logbook software is a new technology that replaces the traditional paper log and which allows a shift to real-time information capture using iPads and other mobile devices. ELB use eliminates errors and delays associated with transcribing paper log entries; it also provides immediate

maintenance awareness of defects and deferrals, and enforces more accurate coding of defects for improved reliability analysis. Ultramain is a long standing supporter of ELB industry standards groups and is well placed to integrate defect information with any existing airline Maintenance and Engineering system. “Cathay continues to lead the industry in exploiting new technology for greater reliability, improved customer service, and increased safety,” said Mark McCausland, President of Ultramain Systems. “As a long standing Ultramain Systems customer, Cathay demonstrates what can be achieved when you employ the vision of Simple-Mobile-Paperless to safety-critical inherently complex operations environments.” The announcement by Cathay Pacific marks another major achievement for aviation organizations based in Hong Kong. Cathay’s principal 3rd party maintainer, HAECO Hong Kong, recently announced live operations using ULTRAMAIN Mobile Mechanic™, to more efficiently complete job cards and non-routines using iPads. The company owns and operates fourteen helicopters.

As 2017 drew to a close, ADSoftware thanked its clients and partners for their continued confidence throughout 2017 and presented a recap of the year’s achievements, before looking at what they hope to achieve in 2018. Looking back at 2017, president Frédéric Ulrich said: “I am extremely proud of what AD Software

Honeywell supplies United Airlines with Cockpit Technologies for new Boeing 737 MAX As announced in mid-January 2018, multiple Honeywell cockpit technologies have been selected by United Airlines to outfit its new fleet of more than 150 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes. The flight deck package will include the first installment of Honeywell’s SmartRunway® and SmartLanding® on a Boeing 737 MAX and will feature Honeywell’s IntuVue® RDR-4000 3D Weather Radar System and Integrated Multi-Mode Receiver. These solutions work in tandem to greatly improve passenger safety and comfort during takeoff, landing and potentially hazardous weather conditions. “Poor weather conditions and runway incursions are major concerns for the commercial aviation industry. Solutions such as IntuVue, SmartRunway and SmartLanding can prevent these incidents from

occurring by providing pilots with the information they need to make avoidance decisions quicker,” said Carl Esposito, president, Electronic Solutions, Honeywell Aerospace. “This technology is especially important for airlines such as United that fly many routes through diverse weather patterns. It allows them to be prepared for anything and stay operational, so passengers reach their destinations as quickly and safely as possible.” Honeywell’s IntuVue RDR-4000 3D Weather Radar System is the world’s only fully-automatic radar system that has reduced turbulence-related incidents by more than 45 percent. Such incidents can cost an airline hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage per incident and further delayed flights. Honeywell’s SmartRunway and SmartLanding minimize runway

accidents, which make up 25 percent of commercial aviation incidents. IFS conducts major survey as well as gaining customers world-wide IFS announced in early November 2017 the commercial aviation industryspecific results of its Digital Change Survey. The study found that the aviation sector is more advanced in leveraging digital transformation than the other major industries surveyed, with automation identified as having the highest level of disruption in the sector. Unplanned maintenance was ranked as the biggest challenge facing airline operational availability, with augmented reality (AR) named as a key technology to help combat this. Almost 60 percent of respondents reported operational availability as a significant challenge in commercial aviation, with 68 percent of organizations in the Asia-Pacific region and 46 percent in North America reporting it as their biggest challenge. Just under half of the respondents ranked both unplanned maintenance and regulatory compliance (both 47 percent) as having the biggest impact on operational availability, closely followed by contractual restrictions (43 percent). Looking at potential solutions, 77 percent of aviation professionals said augmented reality could help technical teams to better react to unplanned maintenance. FLYdocs announced at the start of January 2018 that Brussels Airlines had become their latest client for end of lease (EoL) services: FLYdocs will build and audit digital records for 10 end-of-term aircraft and facilitate their on-time returns. Data scanning of over 3.3 million original documents and electronic migration for the initial fleet of three A319 and seven A330 Airbus aircraft, due to be returned in 2018 and 2019, has been completed. At the time of writing, documentation builds for six of the 10 aircraft were complete.

AMOS from Swiss-AS expands horizons with new airline customers and a manufacturer Swiss-AS was proud to announce at the end November 2017 that Icelandic WOW air has selected AMOS as their preferred MRO software solution. As a cost-conscious LCC (low cost carrier), the airline has opted for the open source and license-free SQLPostgre database, in combination with Swiss-AS’ AMOS Operation Services (AOS), which covers the application and database server administration. At the time of writing the project team was successfully carrying out tests to run AMOS in the Amazon Cloud. Apart from running IT applications cloud-based, it is also WOW air’s policy to bundle all software in a centralized data warehouse — both being requirements that AMOS is able to meet. Swiss-AS and its Miami based AMOS Business Unit within Lufthansa Systems were delighted to announce at the start of January 2018 that Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation has selected AMOS (Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering System) to support the certification process for its new MRJ90 Regional Jet. “We are very proud that Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation could see that AMOS can help manage the critical certification process for their new regional jet,” stated Ronald Schaeuffele, CEO of Swiss-AS. Although AMOS has been developed for airline maintenance departments and MRO companies, the high configurability of the system means that it can be configured to manage the unique pre-production certification requirements. AMOS will be used to manage and support the flight-testing process in the U.S. and support Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation to further streamline their flight testing and certification process of the MRJ90 helping to bring this next generation aircraft into operation as efficiently as possible. write as a ‘bean counter’ but the reality is that counting is now a very important part of any business and especially our MRO business. In MRO, competition is increasing all the time which means that everybody in the sector will always try to squeeze a profit out of each event. In that environment; every cent matters, so counting beans should be normal practice. But before we look into EGAT’s ‘bean counting’ exercise, I should tell you something about the business; where it comes from, what it does and the principles by which it stands.

Evergreen Aviation Technologies Corporation (EGAT) is part of the global Evergreen business which is involved in a number of transport activities including shipping with Evergreen Marine. So we’re part of a global shipping enterprise. Evergreen was founded in 1968 and is now the world’s number five in the container shipping industry. EGAT is also a subsidiary of EVA Air in Taiwan, which was founded 1989, began operations in 1991 and is now, according to Skytrax, a 5 Star airline. Also, as announced at the 2017 Paris Air show, EVA Air is number six among the top 10 airlines. So, Evergreen is a big transportation enterprise in Taiwan with trucks, ships and aircraft. In 2015, EVA Air ranked in the top three airlines for safety and, of course, in that respect, maintenance work is an important component. EGAT

For EGAT, environmental protection is an important element in our policy. As far as recycling is concerned, Austria is best in the world with a 63% recycling rate followed by Germany at 62% but third in the world is EGAT’s home country, Taiwan, with a recycling rate of 60%. In EGAT, our recycle rate in 2016 was about 45% and our target is to remain above 35% (figure 1). As well as environmental AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 25

responsibility, Evergreen aims to be a socially responsible business and there is the Evergreen Foundation, a charity which often donates large sums to help victims of natural disasters. Returning to EGAT, fleet service capacity includes heavy maintenance and modifications for which we have some 1,750 technicians, as well as about 350 technicians in ramp and line maintenance activities. Further to that, we undertake component repairs which activity accounts for a further 120 technicians; and there are 250 technicians in our engine overhaul and quick turns operation. In addition to the maintenance work, we also have around 200 people delivering a parts’ logistics service. EGAT works to a culture of Challenge, Innovation and Teamwork and to deliver exceptional business value with tier 1 partners such as Boeing and GE (figure 2). We have handled more than two thousand aircraft heavy maintenance visits and modifications since 1998 along with another two thousand engine overhauls. The focus is on increasing aircraft down-time efficiencies. Heavy maintenance and engine overhauls includes value added services as well as aircraft / engine upgrades during regular down-times. Besides the maintenance, we offer a number of other services, such as conversions and AOG support. “A key reason why we selected AMOS from Swiss-AS is that it is a modular product offering needs-based flexibility through different editions for CAMO, airlines, airline MRO, as well as an independent MRO edition which suits a business such as EGAT.” For instance, Boeing’s LCFs (Large Cargo Freighters), which are used to deliver large Boeing 787 airframe components around the world, were converted at EGAT from used 747 passenger jets. EGAT is currently converting Boeing 767 passenger aircraft to freighters as well as undertaking fleet sustainment activities (including an AOG support facility and line stations) around the world. In Taiwan, we have four high security US TSAaudited hangars at our Taoyuan Airport base where we can support nine wide-body and three narrow-body aircraft. But EGAT also supports clients around the world in the USA, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Why Swiss-AS?

The decision to renew and upgrade our MRO software solution was really a matter of corporate survival as our legacy system (more than 25 years old) lacked the process requirements that we need today: in short, it was time to move on to a new system. Also cost management demands effective process managers. MRO is a labour intensive activity, so wage escalation and overhead costs lead to an increasing focus on chargeable activities. With this system renewal we wanted to control unproductive activity and escalating costs. In 2015, EGAT undertook an evaluation exercise between four competing systems which finally resulted in us selecting AMOS. We started to kick-off the project with Swiss-AS in April 2016 (figure 3) and were still, at the time of writing, undertaking the implementation of the new system which will be ready to launch in 2018. T

he theme of this article will be to share with readers some thoughts on fleet technical management (FTM) today and how technology can be used to improve processes and outcomes. First, though, a little background to Wingbox Aviation.

WINGBOX AVIATION

Ours company is based in the Philippines and, while we are small, we are proud of our achievements. Wingbox provides services for airlines and leasing companies with aircraft returns, deliveries, FTM and MIS (maintenance information system), plus some MROs for quality and engineering purposes.

THE CHALLENGES FOR SMALL AIRLINES AND OPERATORS Competition

The first big challenge is in increased competition with every year, in Asia, a lot of airlines starting and some of the established operators growing. Both Airbus and Boeing have a focus for the next twenty years for about forty per cent of aircraft deliveries to be to Asia Pacific with nine per cent alone going into South East Asia. Given those figures, it’s easy to imagine what the competition will be like. With this competition, users and passengers will look for better services. In 2016, Oxford Economics estimated that 46% of the world’s middle class in will be in Asia Pacific. Those middle classes and most passengers will compare between different airlines or corporate operators. This means that small airlines and corporate operators will have to create a successful brand to be able to compete. The positive message Wingbox takes from this is that challenges for smaller airlines and corporate operators present opportunities for us.

This would include system functionality that enhances the management of the fleet, of whole assets and of all components.” Regulatory requirements The second major challenge will be that of regulatory requirements with all the safety concerns and with the emphasis on accuracy of fleet management. Regulators will usually look at our annual reliability, how many MELs (Minimum Equipment List) we raise each year and any ADs (Airworthiness Directives) that might not have been complied with or MPDs (Maintenance Planning Documents) that have been complied with. Solutions To overcome challenges and achieve goals, we might remember the Chinese philosopher Confucius who reminded us that, ‘when it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goal, adjust the action steps.’ If you want to build a successful brand but it doesn’t seem to be happening, you need to change your action steps. Right at the top of any actions needs to be one hundred per cent compliance with all regulatory requirements relating

I have undertaken, regardless of whether the airplane is leased or owned, i.e. whether eventually it will be returned or sold, that process will be very difficult if the asset has not been managed well. In one of these projects, an airline spent millions of US$ to comply with the lease return conditions; because they didn’t manage it well; the simple example is they put a wrong laminate in the airplane cabin which then had to be replaced at a cost of hundreds of thousand US$. For a small airline, that was a very large cost.

SUCCESS AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Fleet management success can be achieved by a small airline but the question today has to be why small airlines and corporate operators are experiencing big challenges in the road to achieving this.

to safety concerns. Second will come the actions needed to create a successful brand. When these challenges are successfully overcome there will be a definite and positive financial impact for the business. There will be cost implications. For a small airline or corporate operator, there will be the challenge to attract, hire, train and maintain good quality technical personnel. Most technical people will want to have the best employment opportunities and big airlines will wish to hire them, which means there will be competition in attracting the best people. Also, there will need to be the establishment of an infrastructure within which the facility and, importantly, the maintenance information system (MIS) can best support the goals.

Benefits to be gained On the other side, there will be a definite financial saving to be realized from correct fleet management. Proper management of all maintenance tasks will eliminate poor maintenance practices plus competent technical personnel will know that the correct implementation of modifications will improve the performance and reliability of aircraft so that a business will be able to achieve reductions of waste in man hours and materials. Increases in productivity will result in better aircraft downtime and help to maintain the value of the asset. I worked with a leasing company for quite a while and, for all the projects that

The first issue is their ability to attract and retain competent people. There are big challenges for small airlines and corporate operators in this with many people preferring to go to a big company to gain training and experience and/or taking their trained skills and experience to a big company. In a similar vein, the dynamism of employment today can mean that anybody, from the CEO to the shop floor, can be attracted to a new employment for a variety of reasons. And we have also to consider the thinking of millennials because, in time, most of the workforce in our sector will be millennials. There are a lot of narratives about millennials including that they have a pragmatic idealism, that they empathise too much in work and life and that they are too inclined to the social side of life. I recall, when in Europe on a business trip, I was at Heathrow Airport and read an article on how to deal with millennials which caught my attention because I think I’m the only non-millennial on our engineering team. I thought the article applicable to our company and so, on my return, I arranged some meetings in addition to the usual daily, weekly, monthly, lunch… meetings. The new ones were monthly meetings at which people spent five to ten minutes chatting. It’s effective especially during the times when we experience the tremendous challenges of some projects.

Good and reliable IT The second issue is to have a good and reliable IT system. This would include system functionality that enhances the management of the fleet, of whole assets and of all components. I still remember my first job after university. With the IT system everybody was using Excel files which we found very risky because, on a couple of occasions, MPD (Maintenance Planning Document) tasks were missed and ADs were over-run, as a consequence of which aircraft had to be grounded

for a longer time because the maintenance had not been properly performed. The system should also definitely be user friendly with an ease in audit and system checking and at a reasonable price, especially for any customizations.

Sensitive to new trends The system is sensitive to new trends and technologies. There is an e-records system. I recall while I was working in a leasing company when an airline was returning an airplane: it was twenty years old so there were many records but the one that we particularly needed had been lost by the airline. At that time, Boeing only had a seven year retention period for archived records but fortunately, when they had undertaken an audit, they had scanned some records so that we were able to find the missing record which saved a lot of money, especially for the airline.

The system will generate work scope and create a work order; it will also generate a task list for lessor/customer review which is a very important thing from the lessor’s perspective during the return when they will want assurance that all the tasks have been included in the lease with the work package. I have often experienced that every task has been missing which meant the ‘C’ check that’s supposed to be for 30 days had to be increased by a further 15 days for the return. The system is able to generate work pack / cards and checklists (if required) and to record the completion of tasks after the MRO has completed them. It can create/review a ‘last done / next due’ report which, on an A320 or B737 can amount to 6,000 tasks; plus it can create an AD/SB statement to assure the airline that nothing has been missed.

Dar first worked at South East Asian Airlines as a Technical Service Engineer/Quality Engineer then General Manager for ASTECH Aviation. He went to Singapore Airline Engineering Company and, in 2009, returned to Philippines as Head of Engineering at Zest Airways. The benefits of integration

Where an airline’s IT and the MRO’s IT are interlinked with each other, that means: • Less human interventions which will translate into increased output accuracy – this is in line with thoughts about big data and artificial intelligence which is now at a stage where it will be able to manage what we need as long as humans retain control of the checks and balances in the system. • Increased productivity: I can recall from a previous job presenting to the boss a proposal for an MIS implementation. The owner of the airline requested a justification and, during the meeting, asked why he needed to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for an IT system. All I had to

mention was productivity. He asked for a further explanation which was that, from the planner who creates the forecast there is only one click for the material planner and purchasing to be able to see everything and then to the maintenance people… it’s all in one link which will increase productivity. • Cost saving. Normally maintenance and engineering people only spend money. But if the airline and MRO ITs can be interlinked with each other there will be a cost saving. I hope this has enlightened readers on Wingbox’s experiences with technology and IT; the challenges we have faced, the opportunities that have presented to us and the benefits that we have discovered in applying IT to our processes. So where does the sector stand today in this respect: what is happening around the industry and where does Rob think we are? “I can best explain that,” he started, “by citing a project from about five years ago (figure 1) to

migrate 35 million paper records into an IT system. There are a small number of specialist systems around, FLYdocs, STREAM, Air Vault, and, to illustrate the magnitude of the problem, if stacked, all the stored paper records for the leading Asian airline fleet in question would result in a Tech Records Tower (as on the right of the figure) higher than the world’s tallest buildings, beside it. t Aircraft IT we draw on expertise from across the sector. So it seemed very natural to arrange to meet Rob Saunders. Rob has contributed to many articles and MRO conferences during his 27 year career with Cathay Pacific. Having left Cathay recently, we asked him, to share his overview of mobile solutions, a development area growing in interest in the world of aviation MRO and M&E: and maybe reflect a little on the advances in that area. But first, why does he consider the topic so important? “The question,” Rob responded, “is ‘how to generate dollars from the technology available to us? Although the delivery focus is often on the IT element of an improvement project, the business benefit should remain the core objective. Anyone who has presented a business case to the CEO will understand that a safety case or a case with a positive ROI will get a hearing. A case focusing on the IT will likely, and quite rightly, prompt the response, ‘what for?’”

“That was a significant amount of paper, begging the question, what to do with it. It was estimated that if a solution could be found to remove that tower of documents, the airline might expect to generate something like a 20% increase in productivity. However, an important point I’d like to make is, removing the volume of paper is the visual benefit. AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 37

The actual efficiencies are in retrieval and compilation of compliance information as and when required and, looking forward, the ability to mine all these paper records as data. I believe the solution adopted eventually exceeded the targets. Nevertheless, compared to where the industry could be, aircraft engineering remains a highly optimized, hugely inefficient industry of people, pens and paper held together by silos of automation, often using technology in the forms of Access databases, spreadsheets and interfaces. The industry is at a quite infant stage but there are inroads being made with a lot of initiatives underway that seek to address this issue. If I look back to the ‘80s, we were able to move paper ‘C’ check production plans to a Lotus 123 spreadsheet. 30 years later the spreadsheet is still a major part of many MRO’s toolkit. Fortunately, mobility is the game changer that will see the move to real time production management.”

has never been a paper record in the first place. True e-signature of digital work cards is just around the corner with a few software suppliers able to achieve this. As things stand, the paperless operations, and therefore the airline benefits, could be held back while the regulators and others catch up. The alternative is to see paper records produced from electronic data only to be stamped by the QA department. Data to Paper is not quite what we had in mind. “Every airline,” he suggested, “has to deal with the records history for many business reasons and very importantly to demonstrate compliance, hence the legacy of paper that has been handed down and the applications that went with it. Even today, people are still producing paper, scanning it, putting it into electronic systems and saying that’s fixed the problem. In reality, it hasn’t: all that is, is building the problem but managing it. MROs all over the world are still producing paper and many airlines and lessors still require it. For them, the solution is to scan it and hold an electronic rendition of that piece

of paper; but that’s not an electronic, digital record, it is just what it is, the rendition of a piece of paper. These are what are being used at the moment; people call them electronic lease returns but they’re not digital data. “To some extent this is understandable where regulators are not knowledgeable in the subject and therefore reluctant to endorse change. The acceptance of electronic records will happen by attrition. If we look at large fleets with e-Tech log such as Cathy’s A350s where the first delivery of aircraft and documentation from TLS (Toulouse) was electronic, it is clear that the precedent is set – there AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 38

“All of what I’ve said so far,” Rob added, “is feeding into the MRO system to support maintenance whether it be forecast or unplanned. But, with a growing trend to outsource, when an airline does not do any of its own maintenance, if you’re trying to justify a system and spend money on it, it may not be seen as the airline’s problem and therefore difficult to justify, ‘why should we pay for that; why doesn’t the MRO invest?’ That’s from the airline side so MROs need to derive their own benefits if they are to make the investment. To illustrate my point I think credit goes to HAECO who, as a pure MRO, have invested in a Mobile Mechanic electronic work card and production control solution that is providing efficiencies in their own processes that translate into ground time savings and the supply of true electronic documents to the airline. “That’s where things are going and what comes out of this can be fed back into the M&E system as far as compliance is concerned, coming back either as an electronic record (perhaps even an electronically signed PDF rendition) into the tech records repository for documents. But, actually,

when it’s true electronic, the compliance record could be directly in the M&E system.”

Between the two, you can see that all of those people in the paper retrieval system have been taken out leaving just the person who needs a document able to retrieve electronic renditions of documents from the docs system by a self-service process. Globally, people can access that data whether they want to look at it whether that’s because they have an AOG (aircraft on ground), they’re doing a lease return or there’s an interest from the lessor. In this way airlines and operators can be confident that there are no expensive surprises due in the lease return process. It is particularly valuable to understand Engine compliance and life from the tech records as getting this wrong for the sake of paperwork availability can be unforgivably expensive. “All this can be achieved,” Rob explained, “from managing the data, managing the paperwork and having accurate configuration management and accurate data in the M&E system. But it’s an enormous task and that’s where mobility will help maintain this on a continual basis with low effort.”

Rob talked us through the process. “E-log data is inherently accurate because it is driven by predetermined tasks making it very difficult to make a mistake; the MELs are also accurate because they’re derived from data, selectable against defects. As the figure shows, typically an airline wanting access to tech defects an hour after departure may have 30 employees involved at touch points with probably half of those on data entry.” Airlines with service levels of 12 to 24 hours can reduce data entry staff but will ultimately suffer from defect driven disruption through lack of visibility.”

Figure 8 is an action graphic, in this case using Changi Airport, Singapore, taking an assortment of data to portray where the aircraft is; then if a combination of e-log data and maintenance schedule data is taken, it can be displayed in a graphic that actually shows the aircraft, real-time, in transit. Rob described the benefit. “If you have an e-log that’s delivering real-time updates of what’s happening in the log itself, you can see the aircraft becoming available as work is progressed. Again, that’s a productivity improvement but what does it really mean in dollars? For the airline, to know whether there is an aircraft serviceable but not yet released would normally mean calling the MRO and sending someone out to the aircraft. If you have an e-log that’s structured properly to deliver the information you can start to see the status in real-time; so from maintenance control or anywhere in the world, it’s possible to see that this aircraft is serviceable but not released. The flight crew and Ops center can see defects raised and cleared in real-time for much faster decisions. That’s important because aircraft switch and so forth and it can get quite complicated. Plus there is the ability to alert based on the defects that you are reporting if you codify your fault tree on the e-log at source. It’s an AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 40

“With about 30 per cent of transits, there’s no defect found inbound; so, if we change the rules slightly on cabin defects there’s no reason technically why there could not be a remote sign-off. Technical too but let’s walk before we run.” Rob extended the point. “It would be much better to schedule the people to attend aircraft with defects than to schedule them to sign-off an aircraft with nil defects. There’s a lot of opportunity to move forward but realistically it will probably be a while before regulators buy in to that.” This article will be continued in the next issue of Aircraft IT MRO.

Rob’s career started with British Airways in 1977 then, in 1990, he joined Cathay Pacific as a Maintenance Controller where he saw the introduction of the 747-400 and Airbus fleets. Data collaboration for MRO Why sharing is caring in the aviation industry Mark Martin, Operator Edition Product Line, Aviation & Defence Business Unit, IFS Big data generation is upon the commercial aviation industry. According to a 2016 Oliver Wyman MRO Survey, the global fleet of commercial aircraft could generate a massive 98 million terabytes of data per year by 2026. Between the big aviation players — the OEMs, the airlines and the maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) operators — there is a ton of interest not just in gathering data, but sharing it for a number of benefits, such as predictive maintenance or health monitoring systems.

Speaking at a recent MRO Europe panel, David Longridge, VP services sales for Boeing, said data collaboration between organisations is a key priority in today’s aviation landscape. “Collaborating with data will bring more mutual benefits for airlines and MROs, but how to do this effectively between the parties is the real challenge,” said David. “No airline wants 50 different applications to look at its aircraft — ideally they’d like to use one or two.”

Data sharing

IFS customer China Airlines is one of the largest airline operators in Asia and, much like Emirates in the Middle East, provides MRO services for many of the airlines with whom they codeshare. Aviation safety is a top priority for the airline and it considers the quality assurance of maintenance work as the best foundation for this. Since setting up the Engineering Maintenance Optimisation (EMO) unit in 1959, the company has become a key player in the MRO sector. Currently, China Airlines helps support over 40 domestic and international airlines with over 2,300 maintenance engineers working in five different hangars across Asia, North America and Europe. The airline’s EMO department found its legacy IT systems were hampering its safety efforts, unable to keep up with changing maintenance and safety requirements happening in the industry. Houng Wang, responsible for engineering activities at China Airlines, said “Our network of legacy mainframe systems often could not deliver the data insights we felt were critical if we wanted to evolve

Some leading players in the industry are starting to work on their own data platforms to get in on the benefits of sharing engineering data. GE’s cloud-based Predix platform allows third party MRO operators to download predictive analytical data via the internet, store it within their own systems and share it with customers. In June 2017, Airbus launched its own cloud-based data platform, Skywise, which collects data such as work orders, spares consumption and flight schedules from multiple sources across the industry for MRO operators to perform predictive and preventative maintenance. So far, early adopters include easyJet, Air Asia, Emirates and Delta Airlines, all of which are using the platform for predictive maintenance. Like Airbus, many airlines and MROs will have several different customers, partners, locations and, in most cases, use different programmes for each one, which leads to data being siloed and sharing programs being more internally focused.

the business and intro­duce new efficiencies. For the most part, these systems were siloed from each other, and operated by their own set of processes for capturing and storing data. This made it very difficult to access and share timely mainte­nance information across the organization.” China Airlines chose to implement IFS Maintenix to help optimise data sharing across the airline and its subsidiaries. Real-time management of line and heavy maintenance events as well as data capture at the point of maintenance was a significant benefit to growth areas of the business — especially in expanding third-party MRO services for the airline’s customers, such as Continental Airlines, FedEx, Korean Air and Japan Airlines. In addition to reducing operating costs China Airlines significantly decreased its aircraft layover due to more efficient scheduled and unscheduled line maintenance, meaning aircraft spend more time in the air and less time in the hangar.

A clearer picture The benefits of data sharing are plain to see. Better visibility into what’s happening at both the company and industry-wide level puts organizations in full control of maintenance, giving them a clearer picture of what’s happening around them to help collaboration with other industry players and benefiting from mutual efficiencies. The gains aren’t just for airlines but for passengers too, as better vision into data will help increase aircraft availability, increase safety and provide a chance to shift cost savings onto passengers.

OG (Aircraft on Ground) events are straight forward; one cannot plan for them but they happen due to technical faults or non-availability of material. However, proactively planning the possible response to these situations can help save valuable time. An AOG can potentially trigger cascading events such as sourcing, matching parts demand, logistics, payments and even reverse logistics of a unserviceable parts. But one thing is true for all of those events; time is of the essence across critical phases of accessing the supply chain.

THE CHALLENGES AND COMPLEXITIES IN AOG RECOVERY The AOG desk races against time to get the right part to the aircraft on time but the part search process is challenging due to two key factors: the part’s applicability to the grounded aircraft and sourcing the part in a complex SCM (Supply Chain Management) context involving the OEM, distributors, the market place, and shipping carriers. Figure 1 illustrates a case where the AOG desk, in order to meet their technical requirements, need to visit multiple OEMs, distributors and market place systems to check the availability of stock. With Next-Gen technology enablers like Big Data processing and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the efficiencies of the connected eco system can be enhanced further by predicting the parts demand and initiating the movement once a snag is recorded. When the snag is reported by the mechanic, using Big Data and AI, the required part number can be ascertained with a high degree of accuracy. Once this is identified, the ordering process is automatically initiated. In addition, as the origin and

destination is known, the data can be fed to multiple shipper or freight tracking systems and the best (lowest time with high delivery probability in consideration of HAZMAT / oversize factors) shipper is identified and job can be initiated for the shipper to pick the part from the supplier. Real time information is shared across the various parties through E-ASN (e-Advanced Shipping Notice) and AWB (Air Waybill) tracking from Pick up till POD. Any deviations or delay in the processes can be altered for possible manual intervention. While relationships between the AOG desk and supplier still matter, the most effective AOG desks leverage technology to provide them with assisted decision making capability to reduce the lead time needed for AOG recovery. In the future, MRO systems are expected to be able to take decisions on behalf of the AOG desk supervisors and that will only get better with machine learning to optimize performance. A new way of looking at and managing pre-maintenance data Part 1

Every airline or aircraft operator needs maintenance data for their aircraft; however, when the data comes from different sources and is presented in different formats, this process becomes unnecessarily complicated. Steve Sayers, Director of Technical Publications, FLYdocs

n the aircraft maintenance and engineering environment, whether it is an airline, operator or even an MRO (Maintenance Repair Organization), digitalization of data is rendering ever more elements of maintaining, servicing and operating aircraft safer, easier, more intuitive and more accessible. However, one ingredient in the mix seems stubbornly not to fit this pattern of improvement — specifically in regards to access and usability — and that element is pre-maintenance data. This term might not be that familiar to readers so let me explain what I mean by pre-maintenance data, what

I see as the obstacles to making it more user-friendly and accessible, and how a modern document management system can provide the answer.

PRE-MAINTENANCE DATA

As previously stated, pre-maintenance data is the information that all airlines and operators require to service and maintain their aircraft. It is the information that an aircraft engineer uses during maintenance work, providing not only assembly or disassembly instructions, but also relevant warnings and cautions at the appropriate steps to ensure the AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 48

work is carried out in the safest possible way. Part numbers and parts information is also provided within the IPDs (Illustrated Parts Data) or IPCs (Illustrated Parts Catalog) including details of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) approved alternative parts. Pre-maintenance data is also required at the aircraft end of lease phase, when an aircraft is being decommissioned out of the airline’s fleet. When lessors using a system like FLYdocs access their aircraft data, they will see records of all the maintenance, servicing, modifications and even

repairs that have been carried out on their aircraft while in service with the airline. Lessors will audit repairs and maintenance activities, and will require access to the relevant pre-maintenance data information as part of their auditing process. This could be in the form of the AMM (Aircraft Maintenance Manual) for maintenance verification or in the case of a repair the SRM (Structural Repair Manual). A good digital document management solution enables access to all this data and links the record of the work undertaken to the relevant version of the pre-maintenance data and all other relevant supporting documentation the work was authorized against. It should even allow access to previous revisions of pre-maintenance data.

As part of the pre-maintenance process, the OEMs create and issue maintenance programs, which specify what needs to be serviced and when. It provides details on when components and assemblies need to be changed or serviced. It is possible for airlines and operators to change certain maintenance points and servicing schedules based on statistical data captured through reliability data analysis, but any proposed change would have to be agreed by the relevant OEM and the Regulatory Authority. For example, it could be possible to extend certain scheduled maintenance points if the data and records supported it. A digital document management solution should be able to forecast and trend servicing requirements, particularly those associated with component changes, etc.

HOW PRE-MAINTENANCE DATA IS ORGANIZED AND CATEGORIZED As part of the ‘type certification’ before an aircraft can be released into an airline or operator’s organization, the OEM would have to verify that the maintenance data works. This verification could involve the proving of assembly and disassembly processes. That said, opportunities do exist for appropriately approved airlines or operators to create their own maintenance data; not relating to major airframe or engine assemblies, but for areas like additional inspection steps or minor modifications. This is particularly relevant around areas like cabin modifications, which are not covered by the OEMs, but are one of the main areas of modification the airlines and operators make to their aircraft.

OEM created/distributed pre-maintenance data is organized and categorized in pre-determined sets, i.e. AMMs, IPCs/IPDs, etc.; these are all created to specific industry wide standards such as S1000D. The SRM manual sets limits for acceptable damage under which the aircraft can operate. It also provides the relevant repair specifications. Part of the damage verification process could require the use of NDT (Non Destructive Testing); this is particularly important when trying to address damage on carbon fiber material or engine fan blades. In some cases damage will fall outside the SRM limits; the airline or operator will then have to contact the relevant OEM to authorize a specific repair. The OEM will provide the required information and repair tolerances. Airlines and operators who have the appropriate Part 21 Approvals have the capability to create their own

repair documentation instructions using the authorization and specification supplied by the OEM. Some repairs will be approved and authorized for a particular period of time or for a specific number of flight hours, and some will remain as permanent repairs and stay in place for the life of the aircraft.

Looking at it from the point of view of the solution with which I’m familiar, the importance of recording repairs and all the subsequent associated supporting documentation in FLYdocs becomes even more critical when some aircraft can remain in service for over 20 years. Imagine trying to find the authorization and record for a repair that could have been carried out some 10 years previously without the searching, data linking and data storage capabilities that a solution such as FLYdocs offers. In fact, before FLYdocs was introduced, airlines could spend weeks, sometimes months trying to validate repairs during the aircraft’s return phase. In some cases, repairs could not be validated and the repairs had to be replaced which can be a very expensive process, requiring downtime for the aircraft and the need for specialist manpower requirements. One of the real breakthroughs in using digital data is the ability to automate the linkages within data sets; this can be within the same manual between similar assembly/disassembly procedures or even across different manuals, for example linking from an AMM Task into the required part within the IPC/IPD or vice versa. This is a real timesaver for engineers, not just because they no longer need to access multiple sets of data, but more importantly it helps to make the decision for the engineer by taking them to the right section of a manual through the hyperlink. Hyperlinking also has been a real enabler for providing data through mobile devices. AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 50

CURRENT PROBLEMS WITH DIGITIZED MAINTENANCE DATA

The main OEMs all produce maintenance data sets, (AMMs, IPC/IPDs, Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, SRMs, etc.) and they all author to S1000D Standards but beyond that they format and present the data in differing ways. So, if an Engineer is working for a multi fleet airline, for example operating Airbus and Boeing aircraft, then they will need to be able to access both the OEMs’ applications and software to retrieve the relevant maintenance data they require. This problem is further exacerbated if the airline or operators are supporting mobile and desktop devices. For example, neither the Airbus or Boeing software works through the same application, i.e. you need duel applications to access data from both OEMs on mobile and desktop devices; furthermore you cannot access Airbus data through Boeing applications or vice versa. The other issue with OEM digitalized data is online/offline access. For example, the Boeing mobile App only works in an offline mode so the data has to be uploaded to the device, which then creates a potential compliance issue with engineers accessing and using out of date maintenance data. It also creates a large amount of work for areas of the business that support the front-line operations, as this data upload has to be managed on a regular

basis. The solving of one problem is the creation of another. There is one obvious advantage to working offline and that is the Wi-Fi capability can be somewhat challenging at certain airports and maintenance locations and even on some types of aircraft. Although Wi-Fi access for passengers is now a given, getting maintenance data via mobile devices on board aircraft can be very challenging. The Airbus mobile offering works in both offline and online modes. The online option addresses the issue of using out of date data and greatly reduces issues of noncompliance, but pushing large data updates across the Wi-Fi can then introduce other problems.

SO TO SUMMARIZE

There is a requirement for multiple OEM software packages to be accessed through one single portal that provides the same ‘look and feel’, whether being viewed through a mobile or a desktop device. Currently there are no providers offering a single access concept, so at FLYdocs we have seen this as a service offering opportunity and a natural enhancement in developing the pre-maintenance applications as part of the overall platform. It makes sense to create a new, fully integrated platform that fully covers the entire pre-maintenance sphere of

Our current development roadmap sees us deploying a new fully integrated pre-maintenance platform commencing towards the end of 2018, developing to full functionality through to the end of 2019.
