A virtual visit to the Woolpack factory

P

lanet Protector Packaging (PPP), manufacturer of multi-award winning insulated packaging technology Woolpack, opened its doors to Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) members for a virtual tour of its Australian and New Zealand manufacturing plants. Woolpack is made from 100 per cent sheep waste wool enclosed within a recyclable or compostable food grade wrap. The sustainable alternative for shipping temperature-sensitive products has been recognised with multiple awards, including Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) and WorldStar Packaging Awards. The virtual tour showcased PPP’s manufacturing capabilities, and explained how the Woolpack product can be applied to a wide variety of goods that need to be shipped over very long distances with confidence. Woolpack is best suited for temperature-sensitive food, seafood, wine, pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals. “Until now, there has not been an alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS) that has delivered equivalent thermal performance at a competitive price point,” according to Joanne Howarth, founder and CEO of PPP. “I researched and discovered the thermal properties of wool and incredible fibre, and Planet Protector was born. It is a 100 per cent Australian-owned solution to the global plastics problem, which is made from biodegradable sheeps wool." “Woolpack is used as a sustainable alternative to EPS to ship temperature-sensitive foods, seafoods and pharmaceuticals. Goodbye polystyrene, hello Woolpack.”

AIP NEWSLETTER JULY 2021

Joanne Howarth, founder and CEO of PPP, who walked everyone through PPP's Sydney manufacturing facility.

PPP harnesses the desirable properties of wool by felting and sealing it in a breathable film, which allows the felt to absorb humidity and create a food and pharmaceutical-grade hygienic liner solution. Howarth walked everyone through PPP’s Sydney manufacturing plant, which has the capacity to produce 147,000 Woolpack boxes each week, and to showcase its process for manufacturing a range of cartons and pouch solutions, which can be customised to fit the client’s individual transport needs. “The Woolpack design prevents temperature failures and allows our clients to transport products for up to five days over a variety of extreme temperature conditions,” explains Howarth. Lars Ljung, Planet Protector Packaging’s sustainability manager, adds: “From fresh food to seafood to pharmaceuticals and chocolate, Woolpack has been proven to keep content below five degrees Celsius for well over 24 hours, and between 2-8 degrees Celsius for 72 hours and beyond.”

A virtual visit to the Woolpack factory The company has a very diverse customer base and develops bespoke solutions for supply chains, especially with the seafood and e-commerce sectors. The company has also recently had overtures from pharmaceutical companies who were similarly looking towards more sustainable solutions. “Creating a product suitable for the pharmaceutical sector was a big challenge because the industry is so highly regulated – hundreds of thousands of dollars of valuable pharmaceuticals are often discarded because of temperature spikes in transit,” says Howarth. “We needed to engineer a solution that would ensure that the product remained within the required temperature range.” PPP’s suite of products can all be responsibly disposed of without going to landfill. Woolpack is compostable and biodegradable, suitable to be placed in the home green bin or buried in the backyard.

The company is currently in the midst of a crowdfunding campaign with a target of $3 million. Plans are to expand its operations by building a wool manufacturing facility in Geelong, Victoria. “We’re currently in the expression of interest stage and the reason we’re looking for additional funding is to reduce our reliance on foreign manufacturing, bring jobs back to Australia, and open up a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that can process wool in every which way,” says Ljung. “This will only strengthen the research and development done in fibre advancements in Australia, as well as improve our business’ resilience in the market.” Published with permission from PKN Packaging News

The path to recyclable food grade polypropylene with NEXTLOOP

S

ealed Air is proud to announce that it has formed part of the global collaboration program NEXTLOOPP, working to create circular food-grade recycled polypropylene (PP) from post-consumer packaging. PP is a major polymer used throughout the plastics industry and while PP is recycled today, it is downcycled to lower value (non-food) applications. “It is through strong collaborative partnerships that we can really accelerate how we can ‘make our world better than we found it’, and our most recent partnership with NEXTLOOPP is one that we’re excited about” says Alan Adams, Director of Sustainability for Sealed Air, Asia Pacific. NEXTLOOPP (launched by Nextek) is a global, multiparticipant program targeted at closing the loop on post-consumer PP packaging to produce food grade material that can go back into direct food contact packaging. This partnership will provide a pathway to meeting Sealed Air’s global commitments to around the inclusion of post-consumer recycled content in its packaging solutions. Here in Australia, this is directly relevant to the portfolio of CRYOVAC® brand trays, tubs and lids widely used in meat and dairy retail packaging. “The NEXTLOOPP program is founded on research projects, already proving that the recycling process can produce food grade recycled PP. This is most encouraging as currently PP packaging is not able to be recycled into food grade containers for food contact applications which is needed to get to circularity for this very common food packaging polymer”, says Alan.

22

AIP NEWSLETTER JULY 2021

NEXTLOOPP uses commercially proven technologies to separate and decontaminate food-grade PP and ensures compliance with food-grade standards used here in Australia. Major global organisations and industry bodies have joined NEXTLOOPP to produce a world-first; high-quality food grade recycled PP (FGrPP) that will be available by 2022. Sealed Air’s portfolio of CRYOVAC brand PP solutions is fully curbside recyclable. Recent developments such as CRYOVAC HydroLoQ, the pad-less barrier tray, continue to deliver sustainable value across the food supply chain. Closing the loop on PP is another key project by Sealed Air to meet 2025 pledges to deliver recycled content. Why send absorbent pads to landfill when you don’t need to? Switch to CRYOVAC® brand HydroLoQ – fully curbside recyclable and eliminates the needs for absorbent pads.

World Design Challenge on Sustainable Packaging attracts more than 100 participants from different countries

T

he Sustainable Packaging Design Challenge, a collaboration between WPO (World Packaging Organisation – www.worldpackaging.org) and World Design Organization (WDO) launched in April of this year, culminated in a series of final presentations from 7 teams on Friday, 4 June. The project regrouped 11 facilitators, seven thought leaders, 76 participants and 28 student participants from 32 countries. Held over the course of two weeks from 24 May to 4 June 2021, the initiative was developed in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The challenge aimed to address internationally relevant topics related to sustainable packaging, including food waste and safety, circularity and changing lifestyles to spur meaningful change at both the individual and industry level. Participants worked to develop project proposals and early prototypes on seven main topics: •

E-Commerce

Packaging that saves food

Food service packaging

Healthy and on-the-go lifestyles

End-of-life solutions

User-centric and safe packaging

Consumer behaviour change

"The Sustainable Packaging Design Challenge aims to bring together professionals and researchers in the fields of sustainability, packaging and design across different industries. The idea is that the international teams develop creative solutions that best address the seven key challenges”, states WPO President, Pierre Pienaar.

Pierre adds: "We are totally convinced that design is a key element to the future development of packaging especially at this critical time. We must ensure that the impact on our global natural resources and our environment is minimally affected. We, therefore, enthusiastically approach this opportunity and anticipate innovative outcomes to the benefit of multiple communities and generations.” “It is really exciting to watch the WPO/WDO Design Challenge evolve and to especially see the students work through the mapping process to ideation. It is encouraging to see that the next generation are learning more about the challenges we face within sustainability and food waste and working together to find innovative global solutions”, states Nerida Kelton, WPO Vice President Sustainability & Save Food and Thought Leader in the Challenge. According to WDO President, Srini Srinivasan, “The beauty of these two-week World Design Challenges is the speed and the intensity with which the challenges are addressed. The momentum builds quite quickly and teams bond in the first few days working towards a prototype on day 9 or 10. For a group of strangers to come together and ideate, create and present solutions that may be implemented at a global scale should make all of our participants proud.” The outcomes of this World Design Challenge on Sustainable Packaging will be released as part of a final report to be published in the coming months.
