Help AIP PhD student within the Save Food Packaging FFW CRC project

elp PhD candidate Ruby Chan AAIP at RMIT University to conduct her research project Improving Food Packaging so Consumers Waste Less Food at Home. Household food waste is a significant problem in Australia. The National Food Waste Baseline indicates that 2.5 million tonnes is produced a year, so it is important to investigate ways to reduce it. Existing research shows that packaging plays an important role to help prevent food waste, and the potential for packaging to help to reduce household food waste is gaining recognition. Focusing on resealable and reclosable packaging within the context of domestic food storage practices, Ruby's research will combine insights from consumers and the Food & Beverage industries and the packaging industry to uncover ways to improve packaging’s potential to help reduce household food waste. Ruby's PhD is a part of the AIP-led Save Food Packaging project within the Fight Food Waste CRC. (https://fightfoodwastecrc.com.au/project/save food-packaging-criteria-and-framework/) Ruby is preparing to begin industry interviews in 2022 February, so is currently recruiting. She is seeking to interview anybody who: (1) works in the food/beverage-packaging industry and; (2) plays a part in developing or specifying reclosable and resealable packaging products. The interviews will be on-line (MS Teams) and run for 45-60 minutes. It will focus on the process behind designing or specifying reclosable and resealable packaging and the role of consumers (if any) in this process. Anybody who is interested, has relevant contacts, or has any questions or comments, is welcome to email info@aipack.com.au

Enhancing the food choices and nutritional value for Australia’s rapidly growing ‘senior’ (over 65) population

M

onash Food Innovation (MFI) recently partnered with Enterprise Singapore (ESG) and completed an 11-week New Frontiers Innovation program focusing on ‘better food choices for Australian seniors.

This unique food innovation program tackled the challenge of providing better food solutions for Australia’s rapidly ageing population. Five enterprising Singaporean Small to Medium Enterprises (SME’s) partnered with 30 Monash University students to devise new, nutritionally advantaged food choices and experiences for this most important (and often overlooked) demographic. MFI’s leading innovation methodologies partnered with leading industry experts enabled students to create aspirational food solutions for the senior Australians and facilitated the sharing of these solutions with consumers to gain immediate feedback. The program culminated in a pitching evening, where each team presented their winning idea and received feedback from a panel of industry experts. Monash University said that “The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) provided leading expertise in packaging technology and solutions to help promote the most innovative pack solutions for the SME product. Additionally AIP taught into the front end innovation methodology with two workshop sessions within the program helped student teams select and refine particular ideas based on the packaging functionality, feasibility and user experience. The expertise and support provided ensured that innovative concepts could be implemented and scaled up by the partnered SME’s,” “The final concepts from each team depicted high fidelity digital prototypes of both product and packaging, these prototypes were entered into the PIDA student awards and the WorldStar student awards for further recognition of Australian student talent in packaging.” Click here to view the summary video of the program

Studying packaging technology and preparing for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) exam, made me upgrade my packaging knowledge and learn lots of valuable new information; especially in those areas which I have less experience in, such as metal can and glass packaging. As a Packaging Technologist, it is absolutely important to have a worthwhile general knowledge of all aspects of packaging to be able to make mindful changes to current packaging styles and processes. AIP contributes to the PFAS in Fibre-Based Packaging report released

T

he report outlines the results of a study identifying the presence of PFAS in fibre -based food packaging and an effective testing methodology for industry. It focuses on fibre-based, food-contact packaging, due to the common use of PFAS internationally in this type of packaging as a barrier to heat, stains, grease and water. This report was developed with funding support from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, and scientific testing was undertaken by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and Envirolab Services. APCO would like to acknowledge the contribution of the Planet Ark Environmental Foundation, including the work of Dr Roy Tasker and Dr Sean O’Malley, in the design of the study, the preparation of samples and the research and analysis contained in this report. APCO also thanks the nine Member companies that provided samples for testing through this project, and the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) for its assistance in arranging for the collection of samples. The National PFAS Position Statement, agreed to by all Australian governments, establishes that industry participants should inform themselves about the presence of PFAS in their products, and phase them out where possible.
