Ethiopia's national HIV treatment guidelines were published in 2008. This document presents a national approach that integrates the principles of ART for adults, adolescents, pregnant women and children. Treatment criteria for adults include CD4 counts below 200 or WHO-defined clinical stage 3 or 4 of the disease. Treatment criteria for infants and children include WHO pediatric clinical stage 3 or 4 disease and age-related CD4 percentages. The first line regimens ART for adults, adolescents and children are based on the combination of three of these drugs: AZT or d4T, 3TC, EFV or NVP. These guidelines also recommend a second treatment based on LPV/r, ddI and ABC option should the first line treatment fail. An extensive management of opportunistic infections, post-exposure prophylaxis, co-infection with TB and viral hepatitis are also included in this document.
