Year In 2022 Review

A Letter From the Executive Director

Thank you to all our members, designers, sponsors, volunteers, community partners, and board members for making 2022 a great year for AIA Cleveland! Your generosity and leadership helped us navigate another challenging year as we returned to the office and to in person events. Together we continue to provide value for our architecture and design communities. In 2023, we will continue to create a meaningful impact in your career and community, and to listen to your suggestions and ideas. We are excited to hear from you and look forward to our conversations. Every day I am reminded that your talents, passion, and dedication help make AIA Cleveland better while also bringing national recognition to our Chapter. I am most grateful for the opportunity to work with a passionate Board who values our members and community engagement, inspires leadership, and promotes diversity and inclusion within AIA Cleveland.

Membership offers many opportunities to pursue your passions, advance your career, and share your stories. Currently, AIA Cleveland has 540 members who tell me they value the connections within the AIA community, leadership opportunities, events, and education. It’s easy to get involved, and you have the flexibility to participate as much as your schedule allows. New graduates can take advantage of a free 18 month AIA membership, ARE training and resource library, and scholarships. All members can benefit from design inspiration, enriching educational events, mentorship, community advocacy and leadership development. We want to give you an opportunity to make a difference in the areas in which you are most passionate, and to let your voice be heard.

As we begin 2023, our events will continue to be a combination of virtual and in-person. You’ll have the opportunity to meet inspirational speakers, advance your career, and connect with friends. Annual events include Sand Fest, Celebration of Preservation, Design Awards, Design Cruise, Golf Outing, and Women in Architecture Celebration. Additional programs will include Design Award Lectures and Tours, Hard Hat Tours, and Coffee with the Fellows. Young Architects & Associates can participate in ARE Study Sessions, Dragon Boat Races, Mentorship, and Speakers on the Square. The best part is meeting new friends, having fun, and sharing ideas about architecture and design.

I invite you to join this dynamic community and enhance your professional training. In 2023 AIA Cleveland will continue its commitment to fostering the advancement of architecture and design, collegiality, networking, outreach, advocacy, and education for its members. We welcome your participation and look forward to building a stronger voice together!

All my best,

A Letter From the President

For me, 2022 started with additions to the collection of personal items I keep at my desk which speak to the type of architect I am and aspire to be. In this assortment of books, tchotchkes, and keepsakes, there is one object that reflects the integration of my personal values into my professional self – my Architect Barbie.

Originally used as a vehicle to explore the perceived incompatibility of the architectural and the feminine in historian Despina Stratigakos’s 2007 fellowship exhibition, the version of the doll which sets on my desk resulted from lobbying of Mattel by Stratigakos and her colleague Kelly Hayes-McAloine, FAIA. After their successful campaign and advisory roles during the doll’s design, Architect Barbie debuted at the 2011 AIA Convention in New Orleans and was shared with hundreds of girls through an AIA-Mattel workshop that explained what architects do and included an exercise to redesign Barbie’s Dream House.

“At no point during the workshops did I hear any girl question her spatial skills or the appropriateness of architecture for women. And that, precisely, is where Barbie’s power lies,” recounted Stratigakos in a 2011 article for Places Journal. “The fact is that Barbie appeals to little girls like no other toy. They are proprietary about her — they know the doll is just for them. And whatever Barbie does, she brings it into the sphere of women. She has the power to make things seem natural to little girls.”

When I discovered Architect Barbie (in my late 20’s) she struck a chord because growing up I had experienced firsthand “the power of Barbie” which Stratigakos described. She was a mainstay of the time spent with my friends where we transformed her into everything we envisioned for ourselves.

My goal this year for AIA Cleveland to bring you the same visceral empowerment that Architect Barbie has brought to me. We set out to be something that was always within reach to remind, inspire, and make you feel capable of RE-ENGAGING the world.

I am grateful for the smart team who brought a wide range of perspectives, interests, expertise, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences to every endeavor. I would also like to thank the AIA Cleveland Board, our 540 members, our partners, and our many sponsors who pave uplifted our organization so that we can provide these types of experiences.

You will find this booklet organized in chapters based on the five facets of our Strategic Plan: Advocacy, Inclusivity, Inspiration, Outreach, and Value. Many of the inspiring programs and events that AIA Cleveland put forth this year provided opportunities for everyone to impact and advance our profession based on your passions and resources. Thank you to all our AIA Cleveland members for entrusting us to lead your chapter this year. We look forward to continuing our mission to uplift YOU to engage and inspire our community in 2023!

Advocacy for Architecture & Design

Thoughtful design results in positive effects for individuals and environments. As architects, we can pro-actively create positive change when we work with our local leaders to affect how people live.

This year AIA Cleveland established the Advocacy Committee to provide an avenue for our members to better engage with local civic leaders. We are currently in discussion to work on a zoning charette, Landmarks nominations, and educating the design community on the City’s evolving changes to the permitting process.

Business of Practice

Healthy businesses are essential to the development and implementation of impactful design and the growth of our profession. We are committed to connecting you with resources and fostering mentorship opportunities to help you cultivate resilient and successful practices

Over the course of the year, our members were able to experience many programs, including:

• The Business of Achitecture series

• The Equitable Practice Guide

• Leading a Practice with Passion and Focus

• Empowering Your Ethics

• Small Firm Exchange

Climate Action

Shifts in environmental conditions and weather patterns directly affect people’s health, safety, and welfare which we as architects can affect.

At all levels of AIA, we are working to educate and lobby for public support of sustainable and net zero buildings.

In 2022, we committed to expand our relationships with Cleveland 2030, ASHRAE, and other local sustainability partners to provide programming on:

• Implementing the ASHRAE Guidelines

• Energy modeling and analysis

• Building envelope commissioning

• Health benefits of solar energy

• Defining and assessing resilience

Build Collaborative Relationships

Advocacy Committee

The AIA Cleveland Board is committed to advocate on behalf of our members by addressing concerns facing our profession in Northeast Ohio. As such, the Board has formed a committee dedicated to advocacy at a local level to take up issues related to planning, city zoning, review boards, approval processes, and others that impact the future of our communities.

Influence Policy

AIA Cleveland: Advocacy Efforts

The Advocacy Committee upholds the mission of AIA Cleveland by demonstrating the value of the architectural profession to elected and appointed public officials through meaningful dialog and frequent engagement; alerting the board to any regional legislative changes related to planning, zoning, reviews, or approval procedures that may impact our profession; and proposing qualified candidate nominations for open appointed positions on municipal boards and commissions as well as volunteer positions on design review committees.

The mission of the committee is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the community by helping guide laws, ordinances, and policies of municipal authorities in Northeast Ohio; to preserve our natural environment through sustainable design and our built environment through historic restoration; and to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of our profession.

In 2022, the Advocacy Committee collaborated with our long term partners, Western Reserve Historical Society and the Early Settlers Association, to provide nominees for open seats on City commissions and boards, including Planning and Landmarks.

Annual Meeting

October 20, 2022

AIA Cleveland had the great honor of welcoming Joyce P. Huang, Director, City Planning Commission for the City of Cleveland, as the keynote speaker at our 2022 Annual Meeting. Director Huang shared updates on many city projects including revisions to the zoning code, lakefront and river master planning, and the new administration goals to streamline the permitting process and find common language around equitable development.

Expand our Sphere of Influence

AIA Ohio: Advocacy Day

March 29, 2022

On Tuesday, March 29, 2022, representatives from AIA Cleveland, AIA Ohio, AIA Akron, AIA Cincinnati, AIA Columbus, AIA Dayton, AIA Toledo, and AIA Youngstown attended the annual day at the State House to meet with Senators and Representatives. The day began with opening remarks from Senator Vernon Sykes and Representative Dick Stein encouraging all to speak from passion.

During one-on-one visits with twenty Ohio State Senators and Representatives, including Senator Matt Dolan (SD 24), and Representatives Tom Patton (HD 7), Michael Skindell (HD 13), and Bride Rose Sweeney (HD 14), AIA asked for their support of the following:

• Expansion of Ohio Historic Tax Credits through Senate Bill 225

• Expansion of Affordable Housing Opportunities

• Support of Sensible Building Codes through an exemption to Senate Bill 9

• Support of Sustainability and Resilience

Indemnification Bill for Design Professionals

In December 2022, Senate Bill 56, supported from inception by AIA Ohio, passed both houses of the state legislature and was sent to Governor DeWine for signature. The legislation will require public agency design professional contracts to equate indemnification to insurability and declares overly broad indemnification to be void as a matter of public policy.

Passage of the bill provides much needed relief to Ohio’s Architects working on public improvement projects who are faced with the daunting risk of signing contracts that require architects to defend public entities against thirdparty claims before there is any determination that an error was committed by the architect providing the professional services.

AIA Ohio Political Action (PAC)

The Ohio Architects’ PAC is ONE tool that AIA Ohio can use to help increase our influence in the legislative arena. The Ohio Architects’ PAC represented the collective voice of individual members. AIA Ohio has over 2,225 active members who benefit from the advocacy work we do every day. So far this year, 136 of them have contributed to the AIA Ohio PAC. We encourage more.

AIA Ohio used funds from the Ohio Architects’ PAC to support and recognize legislators / legislative-candidates who were friendly to AIA Ohio on the issues that were important to architects and to architectural firms. PAC fund contributions help legislators and legislative candidates remember who we are, and what issues are important to architects.

AIA National: Legislative Victories

One of AIA’s key goals is to continue to be an effective voice for the profession on Capitol Hill. In 2022, AIA member testimony and an active presence in congressional offices moved the needle on issues critical to the profession including:

Inflation Reduction Act (H. R. 5376) Key AIA provisions included in the Inflation Reduction Act:

• Building Energy Codes: $330 million in grants to states and local governments to adopt the latest energy codes (2021 IECC and/or ASHRAE 90.1-2019) and additional $670 million to adopt and implement zeroenergy stretch codes.

• Federal Building Energy Efficiency: $250 million for GSA facility retrofits, and $2.15 billion for the Federal Buildings Fund, to be used to acquire and install lowembodied carbon materials and products for use in the construction or alteration of buildings, and $975 million for GSA to invest in emerging and sustainable technologies.

• Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund: $7 billion in competitive grants to enable low-income and disadvantaged communities to deploy or benefit from zero-emission technologies.

• Rebates for Home Energy Efficiency/Electrification: $4.3 billion to state energy offices to develop a HOMES rebate program, which will reimburse homeowners and aggregators for whole-house energy savings improvements.

• Tax Incentives: Significant changes to multiple tax incentives, including the Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction (179D), the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C), the New Energy Efficient Home Credit (45L), and the Research and Development tax credit (R&D).

Federal School Safety Clearinghouse

This was an AIA and member-backed priority since 2018 and its approval marks a significant legislative victory for the organization.

Congressional Campus Modernization Recommendations

Katie Irwin, AIA, in testimony, delivered recommendations for campus modernization before the House Select Committee in March 2022, providing the bipartisan committee with a starting point to assess and develop improvements to the U.S. Capitol and its campus, including:

• Improve navigating the campus

• Digital displays for hearings and events

• Inventory existing space

• Offer expanded options for meeting space

• Portal for all reservable space

• Flexible and modern member office templates

• Flex hearing space

Communicate Policy

Equity and the Future of Architecture [EQFA]

Jodi van der Wiel, AIA, serves as a strategic thinker and partner as an at-large member of the Institute’s EQFA Committee. Through this forum, she and her peers advise the National Board on matters of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. They equip component leaders with resources to advance equity, and refine the Institute’s content prior to launch.

Guides for Equitable Practice Workshops

February 16, March 16, & April 20, 2022

AIA National created the Guides for Equitable Practice to provide a framework to overcome inequities and help advance the profession, the careers of individual architects, and the quality of the built environment by creating more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplaces and interactions. Each chapter includes real-world-derived best practices, relevant research, and other tools to help you address a variety of employment and personnel issues about equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Created in partnership with the University of Washington, the University of Minnesota, and The American Institute of Architects’ Equity and the Future of Architecture Committee (EQFA), these Guides are a vital part of AIA’s long-term commitment to lead efforts that ensure the profession of architecture is as diverse as the nation we serve.

National Strategic Council

The Strategic Council advances the profession by informing the Board of Directors and other Institute bodies of important professional issues and opportunities. The Council is charged with surveying the profession to identify opportunities and threats, and engaging in strategic planning to inform the goals, objectives, and strategies of the AIA. In 2019, the Council was instrumental in the development of the AIA 2021-2025 Strategic Plan.

To ensure the continued relevance of the work of the Institute, the Council meets in assembly to deliberate and forms small groups to explore topics based on the Institute’s strategic objectives, and from that work develops recommendations for the Board’s consideration.

Small Firm Exchange

July 27, 2022

Matthew Clapper, AIA, 2022 SFx Chair, Bruce T. Fallon, AIA, and Jim Guthrie, AIA, presented the Small Firm Exchange and its benefits to AIA members. They also discussed small firm data, how SFx initiatives had helped small firms, and ways that you can become involved with the SFx at local, state, and national levels.

The mission of the Small Firm Exchange is to increase the influence of small firms within the AIA and to be a catalyst for change and make a positive impact on the architecture profession. SFx provides lots of opportunities to network with peers, share resources, and advocate for small firms on a national platform through a network of state SFx representatives. These reps serve as liaisons—delivering small firm resources to state and local chapters and sharing each state’s small firm concerns with the national organization.

Yves Klein’s Blue, Le Corbusier’s White, and Eileen’s

May 4, 2022

Katrin Trautwein, who holds a degree in Chemistry from John Hopkins University and a doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, has spent more than 25 years creating paint colors using extraordinary pigments. Combining a Ph.D in Chemistry with a passion for philosophy and design, she began this journey by reconstructing Le Corbusier’s architectural color palette using non-toxic pigments.

After discovering Le Corbusier’s architectural color keyboards in 1999, a period of intense collaboration with artists, architects, and conservators led to the introduction, through her company kt.COLOR, of modern formulations for the 63 colors Le Corbusier selected for his color keyboards. Several other kt.COLOR formulations are based on iconic classics, such as Yves Klein’s fascinating blue or a remarkably cool Eileen’s Gray that the Irish designer used for her famous E-1027 seaside villa in Nice, which Katrin was involved in restoring. Her presentation focused on color classics, color myths, exotic pigments, and new principles of color design.

He uncovers the true design potential within ordinary projects to make the mundane magical. Steve was elevated in Object One, Design.

Honoring Design Excellence

Each year, AIA Cleveland recognizes excellence in design by inviting local firms to submit their best work to be reviewed by nationally renowned juries from all over the country. This year, the ceremony returned to an in-person event at Tenk West on Friday, November 18th. Over 300 attendees gathered to celebrate and recognize architectural design excellence in Cleveland and northeast Ohio.
