COVER SHOOT

Lauren Fernandez THE ELEGANT AND classic shots are the masterpieces taken by our No.1 photographer Scott Chalmers. Creatively we wanted to have something that was retro in appearance with an undertone of alternative culture; mixed with a twist of dissatisfaction of the mainstream media. The results are stunning something we could not have achieved without the five star talents of Sharon (make-up) and Gloria (hair) from Vintage Hair Lounge. Together the ladies made Lauren’s hair and make-up fit for a star. Draped in the gorgeous Jasmine Guiness dress, Lauren was in fact a star; shooting for two hours on location in The Dolphin Hotel’s (Southampton) lavish Jane Austin suite. It was a blast to do and many thanks to all involved! We hope you all enjoy the pictures!

STILL GOING GAGA FOR POP It’s true, we just can’t get enough of the cheesy stuff... PICTURE THE SCENE. The fizzy cola is flowing like treacle, the strobe lights are flashing wildly as every infectious tune belts out of the speakers. Girls strut their stuff in skyscraper heels, hoping to impress their latest curtainhaired crushes with some slick Macarena moves, perfected to a tee. Sound familiar? I could only be referring to the nostalgia of the Nineties, a decade when the Eurovision Song Contest was viewed as the peak of pop success and not just a symbol of 6

\\Revolution Magazine

desperation. The past it may be, just as the not-so-legendary Noughtie’s, which have since passed in a blur. Music has rapidly evolved since then; nowadays anyone who blasts stuff from that era is automatically labelled a saddo. And that’s the real sad thing.

popularity stakes. Or has it? Any metal-head or wannabe gangster who rates their music above anything else only needs to take a look at the UK charts this past year: dominated by divas, boy bands and the like. Decided 100% by the British public, this is the music that they buy, the music that makes them tick.

We’ve seen the growth of R’n’B and hip-hop, indie and rock, while good, oldfashioned cheese has taken somewhat of a back seat in the

Let’s look at the facts. Who is the most-talked about artist in the world right now? Clue: she doesn’t mind sporting the odd piece of steak as an outfit.

You got it, mad-as-a-hatter Lady Gaga. Bonkers she may be, but that hasn’t stopped her winning over the globe with her cool brand of kick-ass pop. Having topped the UK several times, she’s living proof that us Brits are still suckers for a slice of the stuff. Another bombshell who has left her stamp on this country is the future Mrs Russell Brand, Katy Perry. Her sparkly summer smash California Gurls was as fun and quirky as they come, even becoming a firm favourite with the

anti-Nineties brigade. And her candy floss-scented peach of a second album just happened to bounce in at No.1, sending rap king Eminem packing. Pop music is definitely making a much-needed comeback. We’re seeing the emergence of X Factor prodigies who have all hit top spot in 2010 Alexandra Burke, Olly Murs, Diana Vickers - these guys are hardly rock stars in the making. In fact, Miss Burke’s latest effort Start Without You wouldn’t sound out of place

at a Caribbean disco. Even festival favourites Scouting For Girls have put a question mark over their indie boy image with a succession of pop-influenced releases. Boy bands were huge in the Nineties, of course. Back then, it was the likes of Five and the Backstreet Boys who melted teenage girls’ hearts with their smouldering good looks and killer tunes, these days it’s JLS and The Wanted, who have clocked up four number ones between them.

We may now be living in an era where Ugg boots are the new platforms, but nothing will ever deter our love for Nineties-style music. The giant has been sleeping for many a year but now it’s burst back into life, there’s no doubt it’s here to stay. Welcome back pop, oh how we have missed you! By Jen Earp

THE BEATITUDES A FRESH BEAT FROM THE STREETS OF SOUTHAMPTON LEAKS FROM THE SOUL OF THE BEATITUDES...

Where did you get the name The Beatitudes?

How long have you known each other and how did you meet?

It was on Who wants to be a millionaire; it was one of the answers. It’s a religious term- it means blessings.

Liam (Vocals) and Jack (Vocals and lead guitar) are cousins and the we all kind of know each other from an early age.

What kind of genre do you consider yourself to be and who were your major influences?

When did the Beatitudes emerge and what inspire you to create the music you have?

We’d say a mixture of alternative beat pop because we have a heavy beat to our music and we just love writing pop songs. The Alternative covers the kind of rock and indie side of our sound. Major influences would have to be Paul Weller, David Bowie, Beatles; all kind of retro stuff really. Lately their has been some soul influence like Stevie Wonder and Motown artists. 10

\\Revolution Magazine

It was bout March 2010 and both our bands had split. Me (Jack) and Liam had always said we’d work together and this was the time we were free to do that. We’d always been busy in the past but it was just good timing for us.. Where have you been performing; have you had a ‘favourite’ gig?

“Visit the band’s Myspace page, we recommend ‘Danielle’ hands down”

S!

The Brooke surely; it’s the first gig we felt like it was it performing on stage in front of a big crowd. It was only an unsigned band night but we just had a good time, it just felt good! Who writes the songs then? Everyone really! It’s just a mixture of different inputs; everyone just jams around some lyrics or a chorus. What’s the general theme to your songs? It’s mostly inspired from the 60’s all peace and love and that. Lyrically just general bitching about life and stuff!

So what’s the next step? There’s an ongoing joke among us to be bigger than Twilight. In all serious though the obvious aim is to get signed and make more music... Our day with the Beatitudes was legendary. Like going back in time to hang out with the Who before they hit big. With such a polished sound the Beatitudes look set to be going places. Sitting in the studio there was an air of excitement as the guys rang out breath taking tunes that wouldn’t be out of place in the charts. Keep an eye out for these guys in the future...

CINEMA

INSIDIOUS Underneath the Darth Maul look alike monster lies a classic felt retro horror movie!

INSIDIOUS IS A reflection of pop horror movies past. Although it really plays to it’s fifteen certificate it’s well worth watching no matter how old you are (just not 5). Love child of the makers of Saw and Paranormal Activity; Insidious rates high in it’s scare factor even at a 15. James Wan has created a 21st century classic that school children across the nation will 14

\\Revolution Magazine

be daring to watch at sleep overs for years to come. Insidious is about a family haunted by a demon. After moving house it becomes apparent that what ever it is it wasn’t the house. This ghost train of a horror takes a dive into the realms that exist beyond our own reality and is a far cry from it’s ‘this could happen’ driven contemporaries.

“This ghost train of a horror takes a dive into the realms that exist beyond our own reality...”

Insidious has the ingredients to become one of the cult horror classics. With such a low age rating for a horror you’ll inevitably go into it not really expecting too much, but be prepared to get scared. Although cheesy at points it’s essence is cut from well matured, tried and tested horrors past. This film clearly had a low budget in comparison to it’s

peers but it doesn’t suffer for it one bit. Instead the creators have used low budget effects to create a stunningly atmospheric cult masterpiece. Overall I think there were only two things that let this film down; one is the Darth Maul Demon. He really didn’t cut it for us, if they had the likes of Pan (from Pan’s Labyrinth) then things could have been a bit better.

The Most Haunting issue we had with the film were the paranormal investigators. They just really weren’t believable; arriving mid-flick to add some comic relief was a little too late for us. We understand that these kinds of roles appear from time to time for added epicness, but seriously get it right and do it right. These guys just were too nerdy for us along with their Ghostbusteresque equipment

they just had to much against them bringing a late tone of farce to this fantastic fright fest...

GAMES PREVIEW

InFamous 2

Is this the future of comic book heroes yet to materialise?...

BREATH TAKING SCENERY

and awesome super powers lay wait in the word of InFamous...

This game looks amazing and the open world free roaming aspect is a great tool for both hardcore and casual gamers but is their more to this little jewel? After a lengthy discussion we can’t help but see a future for comic book style heroes to start paving their legendary driveways in video game worlds. It cannot be denied that games such as Grand Theft Auto, with their sandbox- do as you please approach, have opened doors to a new multiverse of possibilities. Many game publishers have attempted to create worlds on a disc but with much left to be desired. Maybe this time though some one has got it right! InFamous 2 looks set to bring the comic book along to marry the console. Developers Sucker Punch Productions have developed what looks

like an amazing game. Wrapped it in the dirty, cold and bitter blanket of a comic book InFamous has grown to be perceived as a living comic book by comic fans. So is this the comic book spirit filtering in to the video game...We think so and don’t see why not! The idea of being able to

control your hero, his actions and decisions sounds great. On that account we can’t wait for the release of InFamous 2. The open game play comic book world and the light and dark path in InFamous 2 seems to be the missing link to sandbox video games of the past. Keep an eye out for this new electrifying wave of video gaming!!

We’ve tied her up, tickled her toes, and managed to get Southampton’s very own burlesque queen Fay La Foe to spill the beans on how to tantalise your partner in the bedroom… warning! It makes for racy reading! It’s all about the build up baby! – Set an evening aside and throughout the day send your partner a saucy picture or text message telling them exactly what they are in for later. It will build up the anticipation. Surprise!! Spontaneity can also be fun – surprising your partner at the door in a smoking hot outfit and a glass of bubbly will instantly let them know what’s on your mind. Let me be your fantasy... Ask your partner about their fantasies… whether it’s some mild spanking, introducing some sex toys or simply an item of clothing, As long as this is something you both agree on it can add a rather delicious kinky edge! 22

\\Revolution Magazine

Bedroo Burles

“… if you look good, you will feel good!”

om sque

Control freak Take control ladies! I’m not talking whips and chains – it’s more about putting them into positions that you like (and you know they like). It’s the easy option to let your partner take the lead, especially if that’s what you’re used to doing. So break the mould and take control (again, a glass of wine may help with this). Spend time on kissing, foreplay and the sex itself. If your partner is trying to take control by moving things along then don’t be afraid to tell them it’s your turn to take charge!

What to wear? Wearing something that makes you feel sexy will mean you perform better… if you look good, you will feel good! Invest in good quality underwear and spice it up with a suspender belt and some sheer or seamed stockings. Keep it classy rather than slutty! (Avoid fishnets and PVC – unless they are into that of course!)

Let’s talk about sex… communication is key to a good sexual experience. There’s nothing wrong in asking your partner what they want, how they want it etc. In fact, asking them will be a massive turn on! It shows you are taking the lead, and more importantly, that your main focus is to please them and get it right.

It’s not unusual! If you do something your partner isn’t expecting from you, then it’ll instantly go down as a night to remember! Rather than just stripping off straight away, try easing stuff off slowly, it’s all about the tease girls! If you feel confident to do a mini strip tease for your partner then do it! Don’t be afraid to practice this over a few days so that you really get it right! A glass of wine and a song that you like will help you get into the spirit of things! If dancing isn’t your thing then maybe some soft porn in the background to get you in the mood.

Scream if you wanna go faster! Be vocal! This echoes tip 7 – there is nothing wrong with being a little vocal in the bedroom! The key is to keep your tone fairly low, keep eye contact whilst speaking, and think about what kind of things you want to say beforehand so that you feel confident in your delivery. When your partner is doing something you like tell them! Every single person wants to know that they are the best you’ve ever had - Moans and groans are awesome; just make sure you don’t go overboard!

Slow and steady wins the race. Take your time! If you are in a long term relationship, or you have hectic lifestyles (kids, jobs etc) then it’s easy to slip into a routine where sex is a short, habitual process. Setting aside a planned evening will mean no distractions! Dedicate a good few hours to your love making. It will allow for good, long foreplay and sex will inevitably be better!

Bask in the glory! Enjoy the moment and spend time together in bed after sex. Reiterate how good it was! Avoid rushing out the house or falling asleep afterwards! Trust me, it’s very disheartening when your partner rolls over and falls asleep! Avoid drinking LOADS of alcohol beforehand, it will help with this!

CURVY AND PROUD: WHY BEING A SKINNY WONT MAKE YOU HAP We’ve unfortunately all been there. Standing in front of the mirror pinching at a bit of stubborn hip or tummy fat that we just can’t shift. Although, at times we feel it’s the end of the world, what we have to realise, is that actually it really isn’t.

According to a survey conducted by REAL magazine, only 3% of British Women are happy with their body. Staggeringly, over 70% of ladies think about improving their size or shape daily. This has got to stop. With the average women‘s dress size in the UK being a healthy size 16, why are we criticising ourselves so much? Fair enough if you’re wanting to loose weight for health reasons, but becoming obsessed with getting into a size 8 pair of jeans, really isn’t worth your unhappiness.

24

\\Revolution Magazine

Many women believe that by loosing weight all life‘s problems are solved: that they‘ll meet their one true love, have more friends and look amazing. But loosing weight is not always a solution, it can lead to the start of even more problems. From eating disorders to depression to obsessive consumerism: women heading down this route will nearly always end up unhappier than they started. Striving for so-called perfection that is completely unobtainable: is there really a point? Life is far too short to despise your body shape and deprive yourself of your favourite foods, so go ahead eat that cake, and most importantly, be happy. The main reason women feel the need to loose weight is social pressure. How many times have you been out with a skinnyMinnie friend who complains about their shape constantly? I know I have. This not only

“Am I bigger than I think?” “Does she think I’m fat?” “Shall I lose a stone?”and so on.

Y MINNIE PPY! frustrates you, but also makes you think that you’re as large as an elephant. Which I’m sure we’re not! These sort of constant conversations enter the subconscious and at some point doubt creeps in. “Am I bigger than I think?” “Does she think I’m fat?” “Shall I lose a stone?”and so on. Before you know it, you’re starting a crash diet with the idea of loosing 10 stone by time you next see your so called friend. However, are we changing for us, or for society? 74% of women surveyed, aged between 18 and 30 believed that the media are the main culprits in putting pressure on us to get rid of our curves. Ridiculously tiny models grace each front cover alongside tag lines that boast how “normal” they are. Not being funny, but I don’t really see how not eating and looking like a waif is a) Normal and b) Attractive. Contrary to what we are told to believe, having curves is normal

and extremely attractive. Not to mention healthy! Women with size 14 hips are thought to live 87% longer than their skinny friends. According to Danish scientists they are 86% less likely to develop coronary heart disease. This is due to the necessary fat around the hip area, rather than the stomach, which helps prevent such diseases. Hurrah! It’s not only physical health that benefits from being curvy, but also mental health too. It is believed that women who eat their recommended calorie intake per day are more alert, and have better memory than those who are cutting their calories. Also many people who become diet obsessed develop depression, so while, yes at times we feel a bit down in the dumps, at least we haven’t starved ourselves to get there! Dawn Porter, who famously went from a size 12 to a size 8 in less than 8 weeks-all in the name of research- witnessed this

depression first hand. Writing for the Daily Mail she states: “ But for all my joy at losing weight by week seven the depression kicked in. I’d never suffered depression in my life, yet here I was, so miserable I would cry for no reason.” Like many celebrity weight loss stories, Dawn’s weight is now back to normal with her claiming that she couldn’t be happier as once again she feels like her confident personality is back. One of the most problematic issues with dieting and wanting to change yourself, is that technically you are loosing a part of who you are. Is it really fair that the world misses out on a happy and healthy you, to be replaced with a semi-conscious member of the skeletal society? I don’t think so. Surely you just need to learn to embrace and love your curves, rather than starve yourself silly. You can gain body confidence by accepting yourself for who you are, OK so you might have a bigger bum than some of your

friends, but it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll be the one that gets most of the attention! Look at curvy iconic women such as Marilyn Monroe, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce.. These women ooze sexiness and it’s mostly because they are aware of their killer curves. And most importantly, they are proud! So ladies, the next time you look in that mirror, tell yourself you love your curves. After all, you and they deserve it.
