August 25th, 2017 Regional Learning Session Summary Participant Feedback

On August 25, 2017, the Healthcare Collaborative of Greater Columbus hosted a Regional Learning Session focused on behavioral economics and how it relates to healthcare. 192 partners from across Ohio joined us to hear Doug Hough, PhD, share lessons from his book: Irrationality in Healthcare: What Behavioral Economics Reveals About What We Do and Why. All of the slides used during the session can be found by visiting our website: http://www.hcgc.org/2017-learning-sessions-archive/

At the end of the session 100% of respondents rated the session as having high or very high value. That is the highest value rating a learning session has ever received.

Overview We were honored to hear Dr. Hough share insights from his book Irrationality in Healthcare. Dr. Hough captivated the audience of over 100 participants from a variety of backgrounds including healthcare, social services, public health, and business. The audience was fascinated by concepts from the book including introduction to and explanation of loss aversion, endowment effect, framing, the power of the default, hyperbolic discounting and system 1 vs. 2 thinking. Dr. Hough then related all of these principles to healthcare.

Comments from Session Participants 

Behavioral economics is interesting and highly important from the point of understanding how to influence healthcare but there was very little discussion about SES and poverty and removing the barriers associated with poverty that are required in order to impact outcomes and improve health.

Dr. Hough was a delight to hear and learn from. In all my economic studies, behavioral economics has never been so clearly presented.

Fantastic! Speaker was really able to bring a high level topic down to a level where I completely understood and can apply to my work.

Thank you. Refreshing academic perspective on many issues faced in our industry. Attendees are knowledgeable, but we often get mired in the daily challenges. This session pushed us to think deeper and more globally.

The collaboration between attendees was great to see.

Very enlightening and educational. Will help me enhance my own quality measures to begin to change the culture of my work place.

The culmination of the day included information dissemination from a highly experienced panel of regional partners who shared a variety of regional initiatives designed to help the health of the community. Audience members were also encouraged to pose their questions to the panel and Dr. Hough. If you are interested in learning more about how behavioral economics impacts healthcare we would highly recommend picking up a copy of Dr. Hough’s book. Based on participant feedback, and a generous offer from Dr. Hough, we will likely continue to explore these principles at a future learning session.
