Presentation: Individual tax implications of the ACA Doug Anderson, Bailey Cavalieri, LLC Doug presented on information related to the ACA’s tax implications for individuals and families. To view the slides used during the presentation, please click here. Group discussion  Believe that hardship exemptions are determined on a case-by-case basis and can apply as long as the hardship still exists.  Penalties are assessed for the entire year, not just for the months that the individual does not have insurance.  Individuals are allowed to go three months without having insurance and not face the penalty. Believe this needs to be three consecutive months.  Learning Group participants could help to stop the spread of misinformation around the ACA’s tax penalties. Presentation: Services offered by The Legal Aid Society of Columbus Ashley Saltzman, The Legal Aid Society of Columbus Ashley provided information to the group on the services offered by her organization. Assistors are encouraged to refer clients to The Legal Aid Society using their online intake process. Assistors with questions regarding the organization can contact Ashley (asaltzman@columbuslegalaid.org). To view the overview sheet Ashley provided to the group, please click here. We will work with Ashley to coordinate a meeting that focuses on assistance provided to immigrants. We have also included a number of resources focused on immigrants with the follow up email. Group discussion  Would be helpful to have a listing of the resources you have for immigrants.  The Legal Aid Society is entering into a partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital to offer legal services in the hospital. The program will screen children and their families for health-related social needs and determine if legal services are needed.  An individual’s Medicaid coverage will be back dated to their application date when there are issues with their determination.

Please share key reflections or comments you have regarding the Navigator & CAC Learning Group and/or today’s session.       

Both presentations were excellent. Useful info Discussing individual tax implications Good resources and reminders Great info about both topics, presenters were very knowledgeable. Even after two years in this field I still learned some new info! Great info from Doug Anderson. I came away with a greater understanding. Great tax presentations and legal aid. I learned more detail about the exemptions/mandate. 2

Misc. updates Presentations on tax issues and legal aid were excellent. Process for Medicaid referrals. Useful info from Legal Aid Society Very good/informative speakers

What topics and/or questions would you like to explore at future learning group meetings?        

I’d like to raise the question of possibly expanding the purpose of this group to reach other healthcare constituents who may need education on healthcare for children in different settings—such as schools. Access to healthcare is important, but receiving healthcare in school is a primary way to reach children. Immigrants and Medicaid/Marketplace Immigration qualifications More about how we can work to get health literacy out there. Moving from coverage to care. New regulations requiring Navigators and maybe CACs to be more involved in exemptions/appeals. The legal aid info was very helpful. I was not sure exactly what kind of assistance they provided, so it is great to know that I can refer them consumers that I don’t feel fully prepared to help. The lunch and learn with Legal Aid What can we do as a group to be a little more action oriented?
