Organised as part of the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) declared by the United Nations for 2014  This event brought together 235 participants from 70 countries, including farmers’ and NGO representatives, public and private sector policy makers, researchers and teachers. This event—initiated by organizations associated with the Agropolis International research platform— was co-organized with the CGIAR Consortium, Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR) and the World Rural Forum (WRF) and supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International

Development, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, along with several national and international organizations. A report of the closing session chaired by José A. Osaba (member of the World Rural Forum, the organization that coordinated AIAF 2014 for civil society), is available online. It summarises (in English, French and Spanish) the working group recommendations and proposals. The complete proceedings will be available by the end of 2014, but an excerpt is available.

Inauguration of the CGIAR Consortium headquarters in Montpellier  The CGIAR Consortium headquarters was inaugurated on 2 June 2014 in the presence of Stéphane Le Foll, the French Ministry of Agriculture, and many other celebrities, at the Agropolis International site in Montpellier (France). “Feeding families worldwide is our priority” declared Carlos Perez Del Castillo, Board Chair, CGIAR Consortium. CGIAR coordinates and supports international agricultural research programmes of 15 centres worldwide, with food security and climate change as priorities. The new environmentally friendly building (860 m²), has been built completely by the Languedoc-Roussillon Region, and is valued at €2.7 million. This Dossiers d’Agropolis International presents 21 research units based in Languedoc-Roussillon region, involving over 1000 researchers whose activities are fully or partially focused on addressing—alongside many partners—major family farming issues in France and worldwide. This publication is a contribution to the 2014 International Year of Family Farming declared by the United Nations. It is available in electronic format and in print in three languages. Four multidisciplinary approaches were developed that are designed for the:  study of economic, organizational and social dynamics related to family farming  study and design of tailored farming and livestock production systems to enhance sustainable agricultural production without upsetting rural communities and environments  management of natural resources and biodiversity, with family farming playing a key role  support of farmers regarding innovation, resource management and

the analysis of interactions between public policies and local and regional stakeholder dynamics. This Dossier also highlights the activities of three Montpellier-based foreign and international research institutions highly involved in the development of smallholder farming in developing countries, in partnership with regional teams. Moreover, it outlines degree and nondegree training-education programmes related to family farming that are offered by Agropolis International member institutions. Agropolis International ‘Family Farming’ portal (in French) This tool promotes scientific expertise from LanguedocRoussillon region, while offering updated and enhanced content regarding family farming. It presents research examples, news, selected resources and provides access to 21 units that focus research on this theme.
