Chairman’s Address It has been 40 years since the Department of Agriculture introduced the Texel breed to Ireland. The Sheep Industry has changed dramatically in those forty years and the Texel breed has evolved in Ireland in response to the changing demands. Texel breeders must be commended for the initiative, resources and unwavering commitment that they show in producing and promoting the Texel breed. Sheep breeders, both pedigree and commercial must be rewarded for the strides that they have made in producing top quality lamb for the home and export market. Irish lamb is a top quality product which is in high demand but too often the producers of this quality product are not rewarded as prices fluctuate from week to week. Farmers need to know that they will be justly rewarded for the effort that goes into consistently producing top quality assured lamb. The Texel breed has played a major role in improving the quality of lamb from both the lowland and hill farms. As breeders we know the value of a Texel ram and indeed a good flock of ewes. I urge all breeders to continue to show Texels and Texel crosses at the numerous shows up and down the country because showing is the “Shop Window” for our breed. It is important to encourage today’s young breeders to get involved in showing. Congratulations to the North East Region on hosting a very successful All Ireland in 2015. I would like to thank all exhibitors, many of whom travelled long distances and a special word of thanks to our judge Robbie Wilson from Scotland. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of culling severely. Hopefully the lamb trade will be strong and encourage breeders to do this. The good hogget and cull ewe trade should see a buoyant trade for quality breeding stock in the Autumn. 4
It is good to see so many breeders involved in recording with Sheep Ireland and getting involved in the new Genomics programme. A big thank you to the Council members for their work on your behalf and their commitment throughout the year. A special word of thanks to SinÊad, our Secretary, we are very fortunate to have such a dedicated and committed Secretary. Finally, I hope that 2016 will be a successful year for sheep farmers and the Texel breed. Arthur O’Keeffe Annakisha House Mallow Co. Cork

Slow-cooked Lamb Shanks with Curry and Yoghurt Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 2 hours
• Add the remaining yoghurt and continue to cook uncovered for a further 30 minutes. Adjust the seasoning according to taste. • Sprinkle with the chopped mint and serve piping hot. Accompany with sautéed vegetables, basmati rice and/ or naan bread.
Method • Heat the oil and butter in a large frying pan. Brown the lamb shanks until they are golden on all sides. Remove from the pan. • Add the onions to the pan and fry for 5 minutes over a low heat. Add the crushed garlic and the curry powder and cook for 1 minute whilst stirring. • Add half the yoghurt, the tomato concentrate and 400ml of hot stock or water. • Add the shanks to the sauce, cover and leave to simmer for 1½ hours turning them from time to time.
Tip In spite of the long cooking time it only takes 15 minutes to prepare this recipe. The cooking does not require much attention so that it leaves you free to do other things. As with most slow-cooked dishes, this one will be even better heated up the next day.
Ingredients to serve 4 • 4 racks of lamb • 1 tablespoon groundnut oil • Knob of butter • 2 onions, roughly chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped or crushed • 1½ tablespoons of curry powder • 250g plain yoghurt • 1 small tin of tomato concentrate (70g) • 400mls stock or water • Salt and pepper • Fresh mint leaves, finely chopped

do the business for Cooley hill farmer
artin Rice is a full time hill sheep farmer on the Cooley Mountains. Martin runs Lanark type Blackface ewes, which he occasionally crosses with a Swaledale. Martin crosses the hill ewe with the Texel rams to produce his own replacements (Hiltex) for the mountain. He then crosses the Hiltex with either a Texel or Bluefaced Leicester ram and sells ewe lambs from this cross as lowland replacements. Martin say’s that when working on mountain ground you need a sheep breed that are hardy that withstand the harsh Irish spring weather. He reckons each lamb saved is minumum €100 in your pocket. He has been using Texel for years now and says it is adding value to his hill ewes as he has reduces losses during lambing due to the hardiness of the Texel. He also added that Texel also produces clean, fast growing well shaped lambs. Martin finishes the majority of his ram lambs on farm and sells the remainder as stores which he found is easily done as they consistently reach top prices at local sales. Martin lambs in April. The Blackface and Hilltex ewes are gathered off the mountain in mid February. Ewes carrying twins are then kept down but the singles are returned to the hill where they remain till mid march. Martin finds the Hiltex do just as well on the mountain as the pure Blackies. They all lamb outdoors and again he is very pleased with how the Hiltex ewes perform. “They lamb down with plenty of milk and are exceptional mothers” says Martin.
12
Martin is a member of Cooley Sheep Breeders and sells his Hilltex x Bluefaced Leicester cross lambs the September sale. Last year he proudly achieved the highest average of the sale with eighty lambs of this cross. These lambs are highly sought after and the feedback from his lowland customers is very positive. According to Martin: “They really like the shape that the Texel puts in them and the Texel cross ewe is as good a maternal ewe as there is out there”. Martin always buys purebred Texel rams and says: “the key is to get out early and buy the longest most correct ram you can get”.

Texels and Performance Recording The 15 original members that were allocated ewes by the Department of Agriculture in 1976 had to be members of the Sheep Breed Improvement Programme. Since its foundation the ethos of the Irish Texel Sheep Society has been to encourage members to performance record. During the Seventy’s and Eighty’s an animal’s performance was measured on growth rate to weaning and evaluations were on a “within flock” basis only. Recorded animals were weight recorded at birth and again at 120 days of age were given a Growth Rate Index that ranked them with other animals in the flock. The flock average was taken as 100 with superior animals above and inferior animals below the average and most of the animals in the flock being in a range of 20 to 180. In 1989 ultrasound scanning was introduced to record fat and muscle depth in recorded animals at an average age of 120 days. The three measurements, growth rate, muscle depth and fat depth, were used to calculate a new index called the Lean Meat Index and the values were scaled and expressed relative to a base of 100 like the old Growth Rate Index. Again, with the LMI index, animals could only be compared with other animals in the flock. The Sheep Breed Improvement Programme was a scheme ran by the Department of Agriculture. Department visits were made to each participating flock twice a year; just after lambing when birth weights and records were checked and at scanning when Department personnel did the ultrasound scanning and recorded weaning weights. From its foundation the Texel Sheep Society, under the guidance of its secretary Gerry More O’Farrell, actively encouraged members to join the Sheep Breed Improvement Programme and it soon became the largest breed participant in the programme with 80 members participating in 1990.
15
The limitations of the old LMI scheme was generally recognised in that it allowed only for the calculation of Breeding Values and the ranking of animals on a within flock basis. Some members of the society recognised that for more rapid genetic progress to be made there was a need to rank animals across the entire Texel breed. Premier Irish Texels In June 1992 it was decided to investigate the possibility of importing new genetics from France and Holland. Pat Mc Loughlin, Portroe Texels, Sean Brennan, Lisgobbin Texels and Gerry More O’Farrell were delegated to visit flocks in those countries and this resulted in 12 rams being imported in 1992. A further 10 were imported from the top Texel flocks in France in 1993. This formed the nucleus for a new Sire Reference Group – Premier Irish Texels. Pat Mc Laughlin was elected as chairman of the group and Gerry More O’Farrell agreed to act as secretary. In July 1992 twenty members agreed to use a pool of rams to create linkages between their flocks. This would allow the performance of animals in these flocks to be compared with one another. Six existing stock rams were selected as Sire Reference Rams for 1992 and these were supplemented later in the season by two French shearlings, which became available in mid-September. In the initial years of the Sire Reference Scheme the widespread use of AI wasn’t available and on most of the farms the Reference rams were hand mated to synchronised ewes. This involved each ewe being mated individually and removed from the ram when served twice. It was recommended to mate 10/12 ewes per ram in one day. After mating the ram was rested for a day and moved to the next farm in the mating schedule coordinated by Gerry More O’Farrell. However, as AI use became more widely available, the use of AI with fresh semen became normal practice with the rams moving from farm to farm on the agreed mating schedule. Membership of Premier Irish Texels consisted mainly of larger flocks, as to create linkage between flocks, a minimum of 12 ewes had to be mated to a “reference ram” and more than one ram had to be used in the flock. Some the main drivers behind the formation of the Texel Sire Reference Scheme were Pat Mc Loughlin, Portroe Texels; Bob Reidy, Cloone Texels; Liam Reidy, Faha Texels; Bill Murray, Derringlerg Texels; Sean Brennan, Lisgobbin Texels; Padraic Niland, Chessy Texels; John Donohoe, Ballybur Texels; Liam Blackmore, Rathaleek Texels; RyanTexels; Feodara & Tony Cameron,Rockfield Texels and John Madden Cush Texels. 16
Premier Irish Texels received sponsorship for the importation of the rams from the Kepak Group and, as a result, some rams were named in recognition of this sponsorship. Kepak Jambon, Kepak Athleague and Kepak Hacketstown were three rams that had a big influence on the breed in the initial years of the Sire Reference Scheme. Other rams whose progeny also proved popular were; Premier Kruger, Premier Khios and Premier Kayak. Some progeny were purchased at high prices by Northern Ireland and Overseas customers in the initial years. The group had an annual viewing day at the Ryan family farm where members were invited to bring their ram lambs from the top 10% with a view to selecting replacement rams for the Sire Reference ram team. The animals selected by popular vote on the day were either purchased or leased by Premier Irish Texels by agreement with the owner. New genetics was also taken in from outside the scheme from time to time. East Middle Ardross was imported, on the basis of his high performance figures, from Elite Texels in the UK. Likewise Rams Fame was purchased from Northern Ireland as was Penparc Bandana from the Penparc flock in Wales. In 1998 Dr Denis Kelleher UCD was given the task of updating and revising the recording scheme. Dr Kelleher introduced new data computer analysis that facilitated the comparison of animals in different flocks provided there were some genetic links between animals. In addition an animal’s own records are combined with that of its relations and the life time performance of the animal together with that of its ancestors and siblings are used to provide a more accurate LMI. Premier Irish Texels decided to purchase some of the top quality rams with high performance records at the Irish Texel Premier sale. Many of these rams went on to produce progeny that combined excellent performance figures and show winners. Some of the more notable rams purchased as Reference rams over the years at the Irish Premier were: Ballina First Choice, Chessy Invincible, Greenhill Irish Rover, Renaghmore Keane, Roughan Laptop and Foundry Nickle. Scrapie and Performance Recording. Selecting replacement rams with top performance records became much more difficult with the introduction of scrapie genotyping. Breeders were now focussing on selecting rams with the scrapie resistant gene ARR/ ARR. This resulted in a narrow choice for selecting animals with high performance figures. 17
Never the less, the Texel Society continued to encourage members to performance record and select replacements on the basis of performance figures. Up until 2007 only breeders in the Sheep Breed Improvement Programme could enter animals for the Irish Texel Premier Sale. The Texel breed was the only breed during those 30 years that had its Premier Sale an all performance recorded sale. Throughout this period it maintained its status as the breed with most members in the Sheep Breed Improvement Programme and the highest number of animals performance recorded. Sheep Ireland In 2007 the Department of Agriculture set up a committee with representatives of the Irish sheep industry with a view of establishing a new sheep breed improvement structure. In 2008, Sheep Ireland was formed with its mission statement; “to achieve the greatest possible improvement, from genetic and other factors, in the profitability of the national sheep flock for the benefit of Irish sheep farmers and the sheep industry.” The LambPlus Programme was established as the recording performance scheme for pedigree ram breeders. The Irish Texel Sheep Society has been to the forefront in encouraging its members to become members of the LambPlus recording programme and was the first breed society to agree to transfer its flock book data onto the Sheep Ireland database. Over 30% of all the current 600 LambPlus members are Texel breeders. Texel sheep have, in general, the highest accuracy’s for evaluations. The Future Sheep Ireland is a statutory body set up by the Department of Agriculture in agreement with all stakeholders in the Sheep Industry. The funding structure agreed by industry comprises a substantial contribution from Irish sheep farmers through a voluntary slaughter levy. The future development of the national sheep breed improvement programme is managed and directed by the Sheep Ireland board that has representatives of all sectors of the sheep industry, including pedigree ram breeders. Exciting new developments are currently being investigated through DNA collection and genomics that has the potential to establish Irish sheep breeding as world leaders. It is important that Irish Texel breeders and the Irish Texel Sheep Society embrace these new technologies and continue on the progressive path of active involvement in sheep breed recording programmes that has been followed for the past 40 years. This will ensure that Texels will play a pivotal role in breeding profitable sheep for Irish sheep farmers. 18

Minutes of First Meeting of Texel Breeders Society Ltd Meeting of 18th June 1976 in Agriculture House, Kildare Street, Dublin 2 Attendance: Messrs J Kenny, J Mee, T Keane, W Murray, P M Doyle, L Blackmore, H W Stanley, M Donohoe, J Flanagan, M Ryan, T Quirke, M O’Mahony, P Niland, Professor and Mrs. Geoghegan and Dr. G More O’Ferrell. An apology was issued for non – attendance was received from Mr. J J Cummins. Departments Staff: Messrs D O’Driscoll (Chairman) E O’Mahony, N McGill, T Ward, J Lyons, and Miss O’Reilly. In opening the meeting the Chairman welcomed the breeders and introduced those present and the members of the Department’s staff. He referred to the historic nature for sheep breeding of the establishment of a Society for a new breed of sheep. The first importation, from Holland, of small numbers of Texel Sheep took place in 1964/65. As a result of experiments it was decided to import larger numbers in 1972. Because of the risk of disease, dissemination was not allowed until this year. One of the conditions under which the Texel sheep were supplied was that the buyers concerned would form a Society and keep a flock book. The main purpose of the meeting was to assist the breeders to do this. While awaiting the arrival of some of the breeders a general discussion took place on sales and breeding. It was agreed that public sales should not take place this year and that the breeders should in accordance with the conditions under which the sheep were supplied advise the Department of the proposed sales of any animals. The Chairman said the Department’s Records would be made available in order to avoid in-breeding and that the Inspectors would act in an informal advisory capacity as to the selection of animals for retention in the flocks. There was general agreement that a field day at Raphoe would be useful. This would give the group together with those engaged in grading-up programmes and those unsuccessful in the ballot, an opportunity of seeing what animals are still available there for purchase. The members of the Society would be given first choice of any such sheep. The question of pricing these animals would be decided in the Department in consultation with the group. The date of the field day was fixed for Friday 9th July. 21
Before the election of officers it was decided to limit the office of Chairman initially to one year. Nominations were called for and there were two nominations. It was agreed by the group that the unsuccessful candidate would become Vice-Chairman. The voting resulted as follows: Chairman: Vice-Chairman:
Mr. John Mee Mr. Michael Ryan
Dr. More O’Ferrell was the only nominee for the post of Secretary and he agreed to accept office for one year. As the entire group consisted of only fifteen members it was decided that all should be members of the Committee for the first year. Mr. Ward advised the group that in order to operate a Flock Book they would have to be registered as a Friendly Society. The Department had experience in the formation of such Societies and would send a draft set of rules to each member for discussion. The rules would have to be agreed before the Society could be registered. The meeting then adjourned for lunch. On resumption the Chair was taken by Mr. J Mee. Following discussion it was agreed that the lambs be ear notched at birth and that all should be tattooed by 1st June. The annual code letter would be notified by the Secretary to each member. The flock codes would be based on the owner’s initials and the Society would make the necessary adjustments if similar initials occurred. It was decided that the letter “T” indicated Pedigree Texel be used as the flock symbol in the initial years. The members then present suggested their Flock codes, which corresponded with their initials. The Secretary noted Flock codes for the absent members. The following are the Flock Codes: Mr. J Kenny Mr. J Mee Mr. T Keane Mr. W Murray An Foras Taluntais Professors & Mrs. Geoghegan Mr. P Doyle Mr. L Blackmore Mr. H W Stanley Mr. M Donohoe Mr. J Flanagan

Mr. M Ryan Mr. T Quirke Mr. M O’Mahony Mr. P Niland Mr. J Cummins

The meeting also agreed on pre-fixes for individual flocks. It was agreed that rams should not be put with flocks before 10th August and that 1 January should be the start of the lamb registration programme. Mr. McGill said that in regard to breed improvement programmes the Department would give the same service as was at present being given for the Suffolk and Galway breeds. Since the Department’s officers, normally visited the flocks in May and as they would like to see the animals permanently tattooed then, it was agreed that 1 June be the latest date by which flocks should be tattooed. Mr. E O’Mahony said that as much weight data as possible for this new breed to assess its particular qualities and Dr More O’Ferrell advised breeders that it was essential to keep weight records to show the animals growth potential. Discussion then took place on the grading-up programme and the Department’s promise to recognize these animals as pure breds when they had reached a certain stage. Agreement was reached and it was decided to discuss the matter further at the next meeting. The establishment of a flock book and the question of 100 day weighing of lambs would also be on the agenda for discussion at the next meeting. It was decided that members pay a fee of £5 for registration of their flock codes and that all other fees should be discussed at the next meeting. The Secretary then collected the £5 fee from each of the members then present. The question of publicity was discussed and it was agreed that local shows be considered and that representation be made to the RDS to include a display of Texel sheep in the Spring Show. Dr. More O’Ferrell thought that the Society would be willing to do this. The breeders decided that the group should be known as the Texel Sheep Breed Society Ltd. The next meeting was fixed for Raphoe at 3.00pm on Friday 9th July, to coincide with the date of the field day there.

A joint venture between the Texel and Beltex breeds has led to the establishment of a new lamb producer group. An initial approach was made by Michael Geoghegan and Bertie Mannion of Kepak, Athleague with local lamb producer and Texel breeder Donal Mee last November. They had a good customer in Belgium who was specifically looking to source as many E and U grade Texel or Beltex lambs as they could get within a certain weight range. A good bonus would be offered for lambs meeting the required grades and weight. These would be exported in carcase form. The problem was, knowing who had these type of lambs and where exactly they were. Donal put together a core group of Texel breeders from right across the country to meet with Kepak management as they wanted lambs from any part of any part of the 26 counties they could get them. The first meeting was held on a wet winter’s day in mid-December 2015 in the Kepak boardroom attended by Padraic Niland, Flor Ryan, Johnny Donohoe, John Kidd, Donal Mee, Bertie Mannion and Michael Geoghegan. TJ Gormley of the Beltex society was unable to attend but a very productive meeting ensued. It was agreed to hold another meeting as soon as possible at which it was hoped to have representatives from both breed societies involved. 31
The next meeting was held on the 7th of January in The Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore which was attended by A O Keeffe, S Brophy, F Ryan, J Donohoe, J Kidd, D Mee (Texel), TJ Gormley, B Matthews (Beltex), B Mannion, M Geoghegan (Kepak) and Charlie Smith, Coordinator of the Aberdeen Angus Producer Group who was invited to address the meeting on his experiences re setting up a similar type of group as to what was now being proposed. A pretty reasonable offer was made on the night but was felt it wasn’t enough to get it over the line. But after some hard bargaining over the next week a price of 30 cent extra over the R3 base price was proposed for U2 & U3 grade, and 35 cent above the R3 grade price was proposed for E2 & E3 grade lambs within a certain weight band. The R3 grade price would be based on the average price paid to farmers for that grade on the day. A committee was formed at a meeting which was held in the Ard Rí Hotel in Tuam at which TJ Gormley was elected Chairman, Lorraine Brennan (Secretary), Catherine Mc Donnell (Treasurer), Francis Lyons (Administrator) and Donal Mee (Coordinator). Our first public outing was held at an open day in Mountbellew Ag College put on by Teagasc and ICSA. Around the same time as our launch at Mountbellew a good friend of Donal’s set up a Facebook page for the Group. This really caught fire and has become a very useful addition in spreading the word. Francis Lyons has been administrating our page. Every Thursday he updates the price Kepak will be paying for the following Monday where available. We have followers from all over the country as well as Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and further afield. Our first consignment consisting of 16 hoggets arrived in Kepak on 22/02/2016 and killed out 8 E3’s, 7 U3’s and 1 U2. Some of these averaged over €138 at a high of 605 c/kg. Very impressive for a start and while we know every lamb won’t kill out so good the potential is there. Supplies have been coming in steady small numbers since as nearly all the quality hoggets are already slaughtered. Going by all the enquiries we are getting there should be no problem in getting adequate numbers of quality in spec Texel and Beltex lambs for the rest of the season to keep both Kepak and their Belgian customer happy. This is a win win for the customer, for Kepak, for ram breeders and most of all the sheep farmer who spends his or her hard earned money to invest in a Pedigree Registered Texel or Beltex ram. Finally we are being paid for producing Quality 32
We would make an appeal to Pedigree Texel and Beltex breeders to spread the word to their customers as this is just reward for their loyalty. •• •This contract is with Kepak, Athleague. •• Verification is required that a Pedigree Registered Texel or Beltex ram is used •• It involves a bonus of 35 cent extra for E2 and E3 grade lambs and 30 cent extra for U2 and U3 lambs (within a specified weight band) above the R3 grade price paid to farmers on day of slaughter in Kepak. •• This will translate to a bonus of €6 approx on U2 and U3’s and an approx. bonus of €7 on E2 and E3’s •• Lambs that fall outside these grades or weight bands will be paid the going rate on the day by Kepak. •• Lambs must be from farm of origin. •• There is a collection point at Kepak, Hacketstown from where transport will be paid by Kepak •• There are adequate secure lairage facilities at the Athleague plant if one wants to drop lambs off the evening before. We are currently doing up a haulier database which we hope to make available to members who may not be in a position to bring their lambs themselves. We may also be in a position to put suppliers in contact with other suppliers in their region who may want to share transport. •• Bookings must be made through the Coordinator. For further details/membership forms contact us by email at qualeutex@ gmail.com or phone Donal at 086 2254932 weekdays preferably between 6 – 8pm. Follow us on Facebook/qualeutex.

Twenty Twelve comes out on top
in 2015 All-Ireland Championships The sun blistered across the stunning venue of Bellurgan Park for the 2015 Texel Growvite All Ireland Championships. Mr. Robbie Wilson of Milnbank Texels was assigned the task to find his Champion from the record 225 Pedigree Texels catalogued to compete. Exhibitors travelled from the four corners of the country to take part in the competition. Wilson found his leading lady of the day with a daughter of Scholars Twenty Twelve and Teiglum ewe bred from Strathbogie Stifler. Exhibited by D&E McManamon Newport Co. Mayo, DEE14042 went on to take the Female Champion and was later judged to be the Supreme Texel Champion 2015. The Reserve Supreme Champion was awarded to Mark Noble with a daughter of Anglezarke Uno who earlier won the Senior Ewe Lamb Class. In the male Championship another son of Anglezarke Uno also bred by Mark Noble took the title while Jonathon Higgins brought the Reserve Champion Male to Sligo with a son of Milnbank Valdron, Earlier in the day first up was the Aged Ram class and the red rosette went to Anne Murphy Co. Wexford with Oberstown Tuff a son of Allaunfauld Rockafella. A daughter of Castlecairn Secret Service exhibited by A&P O’ Keeffe was selected in the Aged Ewe Class. The top two positions in the Shearling Ram class also went to Cork with Mary Gallagher exhibiting a shearling bred by Robert Walker. Second place for Gallaghers was a homebred ram sired by Straidarren U2. Shearling ewe DEE14042 exhibited by D&E McManamon worked her way to the top of the 36 exhibits in this class, she later became the Overall Supreme Champion of the day. First class for the lambs was the Senior Open Ram where Mark Noble scored a double take with two sons sired by Anglezarke Uno and a homebred dam. Jimmy Garrivan also brought the red rosette to Mayo in the Junior Ram Lamb class with a son of Teiglum Tornado. 36
Mark Noble again scored the double in the ewe lamb classes by taking poll position in both. In the senior class it was a sister of the two winners of the senior ram class that gave Noble a hatrick on the day with his Anglezarke Uno lambs. This lady was later awarded the Reserve Supreme Champion. A daughter of Millars Vegas bred by Noble was tapped forward in the Junior Ewe Class. The Novice Ram & Ewe Classes winners were Jonathon Higgins Co. Sligo in the ram class with a February born lamb sired by Milnbank Valdron and B&P Hanley Co.Longford won the ewe class with a daughter of Strathbogie Terminator. A very competitive and contested class of young Texel enthusiasts competed in the Young Handlers class. Robbie Wilson found his winner of the Gemma Doyle Memorial trophy to be Aidan Craig, Clonard Co. Meath. Mr. Wilson spoke at the end of the show and commented that he was very impressed with top quality of the sheep on show. A barbeque was then hosted by the North East Texel Region for all Texel exhibitors and spectators, this was sponsored by Dawn Meats Ballyhaunis and Monaghan Producer Group. This was a very fitting and social end to what was has been referred to as the best competition of high class quality Texels ever exhibited in the South of Ireland. Supreme Champion:

North East Texel Club Report Texel Growvite All Ireland Championships Dundalk 2015 Much of the club’s activities in the first half of 2015 revolved around organising the Growvite Texel All Ireland Championships that were held for the first time in the North East Region at Dundalk Show on Sunday 14th June. The show was blessed with wonderful summer weather, a great venue at Bellurgan Park, a fantastic show of quality Texel sheep and a huge attendance. Huge thanks goes to members of Dundalk Show Society who coordinated the planning and organising of the event under the guidance of John Wehrly. Special thanks must also go to The Cooley Sheep Breeders who provided penning and assisted in the erecting and dismantling of pens, tents etc. A giant effort was put in by all club members to ensure this event was a success. The show had a massive attendance of Texel breeders from all over Ireland and the UK. The packed ringside, of Texel breeders and commercial sheep farmers, during the judging of all eleven classes by judge Robbie Wilson, Milnbank Texels, was testimony to the organising effort and the quality of the record number of Texel sheep on show. We in the North East Texel Club wish to express our appreciation to all exhibitors for exhibiting an excellent display of quality Texel sheep at the event. A special word of congratulations to all prize winners and in particular to Dáire and Enda McMamamon, Derrylahan Texels, who were rewarded for their long trip from Newport, Co Mayo by being awarded Female Texel Champion and Supreme Texel Champion with their shearling ewe. Congratulations to Mark Noble, Kilcoursey Texels, who had a fantastic day with his Texel show team and was awarded Male Texel Champion, Reserve Female Texel Champion and Reserve Supreme Texel Champion. The North East Club was delighted to welcome a large attendance of UK Texel members both from Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. We were particularly pleased to have members of the Five Nations Young Texel Breeders and members of The Shropshire & Borders Texel Club on flock visits to a number of our member’s farms over the weekend of the show. We hope they had an enjoyable stay in the region. The club wishes to express 46
47
our appreciation to Pat and Barry Farrell, Oberstown Texels, Michael and Kenneth Bird, Dunlever and Mill Farm Texels, John Canty, Clover Hill Texels and Sean Mc Gee, Navac Texels for hosting the farm visits over the weekend. The busy weekend came to a close with a barbeque on the show grounds after judging was completed. This gave guests and organisers an opportunity to relax, rehydrate and renew their energy levels after a busy few days!! The club appreciates the generosity of Dawn Meats and Monaghan Lamb Producer Group for supplying and sponsoring the lamb burgers. The unanimous consensus was that these burgers were of such quality that they had to come from Texel carcasses!! Practically everyone went for second helpings. We also wish to express our appreciation to Dundalk Show Society and Irish Texel Sheep Society for their help in organising the barbeque and supplying food and beverages. Finally, but not least, we are greatly indebted to The Irish Texel Sheep Society secretary, Sinead Brophy, for her mammoth efforts in coordinating and ensuring that everything went according to plan.

Sales Premier Sale A number of North East Texel Club breeders were to the fore both as vendors and purchasers of some of the top priced animals at the Texel Premier in Blessington 2015. Pat & Barry Farrell, Oberstown Texels, had a productive day both in the show and sale ring. A son of Oberstown Usain Bolt was sold for 2200gns to Michael and Kenneth Bird, Dunlever and Mill farm Texels. Their third placed ram in the LambPlus Ram Lamb class was sold to Peter Gibbons, Macetown Texel, for 1500gns. They also had a ram lamb placed third in the Young Breeders Class. Amanda and Jessica Mc Meel’s first placed ram lamb in the Novice Class, Mac’s Wannabee, sold for 1000gns to Shane Mc Hugh, Figart Texels . J, C&M Mc Hugh, Greenhill Texels, were part of the purchasing syndicate that purchased Hillcrest Wagner for 4000gns. Greenhill Texels sold Greenhill Whitelaw for 1000gns to John Wehrly, Ravensdale Texels. Cootehill Regional Sale This was the second year that the society sale for the north east was held at Station Road Mart Cootehill. This is proving to be a successful venue for Texel ram sales and the customer base is increasing. The North East Club is grateful to Jimmy Reilly and his staff at Station Road Mart for the facilities they are providing and their efforts in promoting this sale. In the presale show the Male Champion was awarded to J,C & M Mc Hugh for the first placed ram lamb in the LambPlus Class. The Reserve Male Champion was awarded to Brian Kirkham for his first placed shearling ram. In the Ewe Lamb Class Brian Kirkham was awarded both Champion and Reserve Champion. At the sale there was a strong trade for good quality commercial rams which saw over 85% of the rams on offer finding a new home. Prices ranged from 760 to 350gns. The female trade was exceptionally buoyant with prices ranging from 520 to 330gns and a 100% clearance. Carnaross Club Sale This sale is increasing in popularity as a Texel ram selling venue. We saw an increased entry at our sale in 2015 but the demand more than matched the supply with prices stronger than previous years. The price range was from 540 to 370gns. 50

Sheep abortion
can it be controlled on farms? Sheep abortion is a consistent cause of lamb loss around the country year on year and negatively affects the output per ewe as well as the output per hectare on farms. Losses between scanning and sale can impact heavily on the economic viability of a flock. What costs are associated with infectious sheep abortion? •• Future income loss from aborted lamb •• Treatment of ewe that aborted •• Treatment of weak lambs •• Labour/time spent nursing weak lambs •• Increased replacement costs •• Cost of maintaining a barren ewe It has been proposed that the perinatal loss of a single lamb equates to the cost of maintaining the dam for a year plus the cost of mating!1 How can a farmer tell if there is an infectious cause of abortion in the flock? Farm data must be analysed so that the flock can be benchmarked against flocks in a similar management system. In order to do this, losses need to be consistently recorded during lambing. Record the numbers of lambs lost and the reason for the loss if it is known. Compare scanning, lambing and rearing records to previous years to assess how the farm is currently doing. Many farmers accept barren ewe and abortion rates of between 5-10%. However, a combined rate of 2% is likely to be due to an infectious agent and should be investigated so that control measures can be put in place to get things back on track. Get a diagnosis so you can implement correct control measures Control measures for abortion vary depending on the underlying cause. Appropriate control measures cannot be implemented if the cause of abortion in the flock has not been identified. Abortion material (both the foetus and the cleanings) should be double bagged, labelled and sealed before submission to the laboratory. Persevere – the more samples you submit, the better chance you have of getting a diagnosis and 53
implementing the most cost beneficial programme possible2. It can be useful to have problem ewes (ewes that aborted or were barren) blood tested. This can give an indication of the diseases to which the flock has previously been exposed. What are the most common causes of abortion in Irish flocks? Toxoplasma gondii is the most commonly diagnosed cause of ovine abortion in Ireland and in the most recently published report, was diagnosed in 26% of samples submitted to the regional veterinary laboratories. Chlamydophila abortus, the second most common cause, was diagnosed in 9% of cases3. Other less frequently diagnosed causes include leptospirosis, campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis and listeriosis. Toxoplasmosis •• How does a flock become infected? Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite. Eggs are shed for approximately one week in cat faeces before the cat becomes immune. The cat is then no longer a source of infection as long as the cat remains in healthy condition. Toxoplasma eggs are eaten by ewes in feed, forage or on fields contaminated by cat faeces. Sheep and mice are classified as intermediate hosts for the parasite. Mice, therefore, act as a source of infection for the cat. •• What signs will be seen in a flock infected with Toxoplasma gondii? Signs depend on the stage of pregnancy at which a ewe is infected and include one or all of the following: barren ewes, mummified foetuses, aborted freshly dead lambs or weak lambs with a high neonatal mortality rate. In chronically infected flocks the abortion or barren rate is highest in ewe lambs or hoggets and lowest in older ewes while in newly infected flocks, all age groups can be affected4. •• What can be done to control it? Control rodents. Keep feed bins and hay sheds secure so that they cannot be accessed by cats. Keep an adult neutered cat on the farm as this will deter other, potentially naive cats, from wandering into the area and continuing the cycle of infection. Feed hay or straw bales from the top of stacks to cattle rather than sheep as this is the most likely area to be contaminated by cat faeces. Infection with Toxoplasma gondii rarely, if ever, causes abortion in cows5. 54
Vaccinate replacement ewe lambs and hoggets to protect against infection prior to tupping. This will mean planning ahead so it is important to consult your veterinary practitioner for advice on correct administration and timing of vaccination. Ewes that have aborted due to toxoplasmosis are considered immune and can be retained for breeding the following year6. •• Benefits of vaccination Vaccinating against the disease will reduce the number of lamb losses by decreasing the number of early embryonic deaths, decreasing the number of barren ewes and decreasing the number of abortions due to infection with Toxoplasma gondii. Enzootic abortion (EAE) •• How does it get into a flock? Transmission is from sheep to sheep. EAE is caused by the bacterium Chlamydophila abortus. The main source of infection is aborted foetuses and cleanings. A ewe can shed the bacteria for about three weeks following abortion and so is a constant source of infection to other ewes4. •• What signs will be seen in a flock infected with Chlamydophila abortus? Abortions in the final 3 weeks of pregnancy are usually the first signs of EAE in the flock6.Ewes may stop eating and a red vaginal discharge may be seen three days before the ewe aborts4.Aborted lambs are usually well developed and quite fresh indicating recent foetal death6. Commonly full term stillborn or weak lambs are born that are unable to suckle. Often ewes show no signs of illness at all accompanying the abortion. •• What can be done to control it? Keep a closed flock – do not buy in. Immediately isolate all ewes that abort. Remove aborted foetuses, cleanings and bedding and dispose of appropriately. Treat the remaining flock with antibiotics, if advised in consultation with your veterinary practitioner. Do not allow other ewes or lambs to lick or smell a weak lamb or aborted foetus. 55
Infected ewes can shed the bacteria at subsequent lambings and so remain a potential source of infection to the flock. These ewes can be culled, however, it is usually not economically feasible to do so. Ewes that abort once will not abort again in subsequent years6. Vaccinate to protect the flock against EAE. Again, it is important to consult your veterinary practitioner for advice on correct administration and timing of vaccination. •• Benefits of vaccination Vaccinating will reduce the number of abortions caused by Chlamydophila abortus infection on the farm. Conclusions The first step in controlling lamb losses is to benchmark the flock. Once this is done consult your vet for advice on any diagnostics that may be needed to determine the cause of the losses. Persevere and continue submitting any aborted foetuses, including the cleanings, to the laboratory. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, plan a control strategy. This will often involve vaccination against either toxoplasmosis, EAE or both. Reducing the incidence of barren ewes and abortion to <2% is achievable and will increase the output per ewe and the overall profitability and sustainability of the flock. References 1. Sargison, N. Texel sheep leave spare time
with Zőe
Zöe & Johnny Payne farm outside Rathangan in Co.Kildare. Their farming system consists of 300 commercial ewes, and a store to beef finishing system. The 300 ewe flock consists now of mainly Texel cross ewes. The Payne’s have found that the Texel is performing well in their farming system both as ewes and as the main ram breed. “Initially Suffolk and Charolais rams were used but after first introducing Texel rams we noticed that the Texel cross lambs were performing better in our system and we made the decision quickly to use all Texel rams on the commercial flock.”
63
According to Johnny, “We mainly buy our Texel & Texel cross ewes at the Hiltex ewe sale in Ballinrobe in August. The one thing that stood out after buying our first batch was their fantastic mothering ability, which allows us to get ewe and lambs out to grass within a day or two days of lambing. This reduces both workload and housing requirements at lambing time. It also helps to reduce forage and concentrate costs. We find that they were easy lambed, lambs are clean requiring less worm dosing and easily finished off grass.” “As a large part of our income is derived from producing high quality factory lambs as efficiently and as quickly as possible, we always find that Texel lambs grade very well and maintain a lean carcass with higher percentage kill out,” says Zoe. Johnny sees the benefit of producing quality Texel lambs as he finds that in his experience quality Texel lambs consistently achieve the highest prices when they are either sold live in the mart or slaughtered at the factory. Zoe, who comes from a non-farming background her spare time off farm passion is weightlifting. She quickly developed a passion for the breed and all things agriculture and decided to join the Irish Texel Sheep Society and started her own pedigree flock in 2012, Mountvilla Texels. The pedigree flock consists of 20 ewes. “We are paying particular attention to selecting flock replacements and select our replacement ewe lambs early in the year.” Zoe, with their 3-year old son Rocky, is also pro-active in the management of the commercial flock. “Since we moved to Texel replacements, the traits that they are breeding into our flock include easier handling at lambing, greater prolificacy and less fostering due to their great mothering ability. We also find the Texel cross ewes are better value as they out live other breeds and have a higher cull value. The Texel breed has greatly increased the flock standard and encouraged my interest and love for farming with the Texel.”

Ballinrobe Hiltex & Texel X Sale Buyers once again came from all over the country to the Annual Hiltex and Texel X sale, held in Ballinrobe on August 22nd 2015. This year was the first year that it was held as a stand-alone Saturday sale, and it certainly lived up to expectation. Yet again, the sale proved an immense success, with prices reaching record levels. Buyers were reported to be extremely happy with the quality of stock available, with many of them being repeat buyers, having already purchased at the sale in recent years. Pens of Hiltex hoggets sold extremely well, with €205 paid as some of the top prices. Texel X ewes topped at €220, while Texel X lambs sold for a top of €132. The top price paid for Hiltex ewe lambs was €108. At a time when many farmers are experimenting with many different breeds for breeding ewes, the Hiltex and Texel X ewes are repeatedly proving to be hugely satisfactory. For the coming year, the sale will take place on Saturday 20th August 2016. For all commercial sheep farmers, those who insist on buying only the best, this sale in Ballinrobe is not to be missed. Unlocking the potential of grazed grass Darren Carty, Irish Farmers Journal The principles of grassland management are the same irrespective of enterprise, with a higher number of paddocks and rotational or paddock grazing having the potential to improve grass quality while also increasing the volume of grass grown. It is not always straightforward in sheep enterprises to operate a paddock grazing system due to land fragmentation. However, on many farms there is potential to reduce large field sizes, either permanently or temporarily, to manage grass better during peak growth periods. The optimum, similar to all cattle enterprises, is to graze an area in a short time frame of three to four days to a week or, in a set stocking system, divide large areas that are grazed at a low stocking rate so that fresh grass is on offer every week, ideally, to two weeks. In periods of peak growth, having multiple divisions per grazing group will allow surplus grass to be taken out of the rotation as baled silage, while still leaving adequate paddocks to operate a grazing rotation.
91
On the other hand, if animals are moving through the grazing rotation too fast or continually grazing grass regrowth, grass growth will be decreased, with a higher risk of a grass deficit occurring. Rotational grazing will help guard against this occurring and allow decisions such as spreading extra fertiliser to build grass supplies. Recommendations In a sheep grazing situation, the recommendation is five to six paddocks per grazing group. Where possible, paddocks should be laid out in equalsized divisions. Avoid long or narrow divisions, as these will be more prone to sward damage during periods of inclement weather. Farmlets in the Athenry demo flocks are laid out with five grazing divisions per group. These range in size from 1.5ha to 2.5ha, depending on the stocking rate of 10 ewes, 12 ewes and 14 ewes per hectare for the 60-ewe flocks. Fencing is critical The secret to operating a paddock grazing system with sheep is to have good fencing. This is critical to be able to confine sheep to certain areas; for example, having dry ewes graze out paddocks later in the year. There is a significant cost differential between the type of fence erected. Table 1 details the costs of a range of fencing types on a per-metre basis and also a rough cost for 100m of fencing. It should be noted that while there is a significant differential in price of permanent fences, there is also a marked difference in the quality of the fence and its expected lifetime, with PDM posts traded with a 15-year 92
guarantee. Concrete post fences and the new Clipex fence also offer a longer lifespan. These fences are more attractive where a grant can be drawn down to reduce costs. At present sheep fencing is not included in the Targeted Agricultural modernisation Scheme (TAMS) but it should be included in a forthcoming tranche of the scheme. Fences are calculated on the cost of materials excluding VAT, with posts spaced at 4m and a strainer post at both ends. With temporary grazing, rollout fences are more expensive but greatly reduce labour. Water supply Water supply, and more importantly its location, is essential in operating a rotational grazing system. Placing water troughs in the middle of fields, as opposed to field perimeters, allows more paddocks to be implemented permanently or temporarily. Many of the Teagasc/Irish Farmers Journal BETTER farm participants are operating a percentage of their farm with a temporary or flexible piped water and trough system, whereby water piping is run on top of the ground (usually along the wire fence to prevent movement by cattle) and connected to a moveable trough to service a number of paddocks. Take care to match the size of piping/trough to water pressure to ensure water flow adequately meets stock demand.
93
Creep grazing delivers 2kg Research has shown creep grazing lambs ahead of ewes has the potential to increase average weaning weights by 2kg liveweight. Offering lambs a supply of high-quality grass can deliver similar levels of performance to creep feeding. The greatest limitation is having adjoining fields or paddocks that allow lambs to graze ahead of ewes. Good fencing is also required for the practice to work. A number of companies are manufacturing creep gates costing in the region of â‚Ź80 to â‚Ź150, depending on the length of the gate. Some field gate manufacturers also have specialised gates that incorporate a creep section in the centre of the gate. Creep grazing can be used successfully with creep feeding or supplementation of lambs, as it allows lambs to be fed in troughs and minimises excessive costs associated with ad-lib creep feeding during the main grazing season. Meal levels can be reduced, or ideally cut out, where lambs have access to high-quality grass and reintroduced if grass supplies diminish or quality reduces. 94
High performance with mixed grazing While there has been an increase in paddock grazing in suckler or beef enterprises, mixed paddock grazing has been slower to take off, with many farmers pointing to a higher cost of splitting paddocks. Experience on mixed farms in the Teagasc/Irish Farmers Journal BETTER farm Beef Programme or the Teagasc BETTER farm Sheep Programme have shown cattle and sheep can be rotationally grazed satisfactorily with temporary fencing. The last photo in Table 1 shows a fence erected on the farm of Charlie Crawford, Co Donegal. Charlie has divided large fields by using a combination of a number of timber stakes (to add stability) and insulated steel pigtail posts or plastic posts. The fence works best with a timber post at each end, with a number of intermediate timber posts recommended every 50m in longer fences. Many farmers prefer pigtail posts to plastic/PVC posts, citing lower lifespans. Plastic insulators/joiners can be used to erect two rows of polywire at a lower level, with a row of steel wire on top. This has worked well on the programme farms. The potential benefits of mixed grazing are a 7% to 8% increase in stocking rate and a 10% lift in animal performance. Fence description

My Texel Story by Michael Bird, Dunlever Texels
In1978 my late Father, in his wisdom decided to invest in the latest sheep breeed to enter this island; a Pedigree Texel ram This he did at the first sale of Texel Shearling Rams, held at Blessington Mart. Consequently Raphoe Magician joined our commercial flock and of course we were really impressed by the lively lambs that landed next season. Being already breeders of Angus and Hereford cattle the obvious decision was to purchase some Texel females. This prompted the visit to the Athenry Texel sale in 1979 where we secured a ewe lamb UCT R 14 from Lyons estate. This was hastily followed by putting our name down for three females which were part of a consignment imported from Holland by the Irish Texel society in 1980 organised by the competant Dr Gerry More O Ferrall. Of these three ewes one made a significant impact to such an extent that our most consistant female line still goes right back to her thirty six years later. This of course is the lesson most pedigree breeders learn that the breeding power is in the female line. Visits back to Athenry saw the purchase of rams such as Derrydonnell Rock from the Keane brothers and Chessy Samson from another foundation flock of the breed Padraic Niland. In 1985, on our first visit to Portadown we met John Foster on his first visit there. He was as persuasive then as he is now so Springhill Joker was purchased who went on to be an RDS Champion the following Spring! Being constantly impressed by the stock produced by the Lisgobbin and Cush flocks we managed to buy two proven rams from the Sean Brennan & John Madden partnership, Lisgobbin Crown and Courthill Statesman in 1989 and 1990 respectively. Both of these rams especially Crown had the desired impact as this was our first break into a four figured sum for a ram lamb in the Premier Sale which was then held in Doyles Maynooth. Now we were competing with the HEAVIES... Of course thats the fun of it all whilst we compete with each other as breeders we equally depend on our colleagues custom. Together we strive to improve the breed and broaden our customer base for Texels throughout Ireland. In 2008, the Millfarm flock was established to celebrate Kenneths inherited interest in breeding Texels. I look foward to serving as Chairman after our AGM and the ensuing social function to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Society in November. Finally I would like to compliment Arthur O Keeffe for his consistant approach as Chairman over the last two years. 119

Chessy Texels Submitted by Padraic Niland
The Chessy flock was established in 1976 by the purchase of four ewes and a ram from the Department of Agriculture. The ram was called “Darrara Karl 5” and his first two sons “Paladin” was Reserve Champion and “Paragon” 5th prizewinner Premier Sale and both were sold to Scotland. Unfortunately in those days rams lost their identity once they crossed the water. 1979 was one of our best years selling 5 ram lambs in Blessington, getting 5000gns for them including the Champion “Regal Monarch” who made 3500gns a record price that was to stand for 20 years. 3 of the 5 went to Scotland. “Regal Monarch” was purchased by the Department of Agriculture and placed at Mellows College where he died from copper poisoning in his first Winter. In his short life he sired some very influential sires which left their mark on the breed. “Carrick Lough” was purchased from J Cummins and he sired “Status Symbol” Champion Ram Blessington and the following year the Supreme Champion RDS. Also at that time we sold an aged ewe for £2000 and a ewe lamb for £1000 to Scotland. Another sire that did well for us was “Coolderry Recluse” one of his sons was used here before going to a sale, he produced “Warlord” who was Reserve Champion Blessington. Probably the best value sire ever used here was “Midland Unicorn” he cost 250gns and from his first crop he sired the Reserve Champion Blessington and the following year he sired the Champion Ram in Blessington for Peter Glennon. In 1985 due to an outbreak of orf we did not show at the Premier Sale but we later had the Champion in Athenry. We joined with Peter Glennon to purchase “Castle Cannon” a ram that was to dominate the breed for the next five years. He sired “Designate” the Champion Ram Maynooth who made 1600gns, the Reserve Champion “Five Star” also at 1600gns and “Foremost” 3rd prize that day at 1650gns. In ’91 he sired “Hi Tec” the Champion Ram sold for 1700gns and the ’92 Champion Ram “Bruno” sold for 1050gns, who proved a great show sheep. To follow “Cannon” we purchased “Knockaraha Festy”for 320gns. He sired the RDS Supreme Champion and Reserve Interbreed Champion and the 2nd prize Open Ram Lamb Maynooth from his only crop of lambs. The 122
next sire was “Dunlever Golden Wonder” at 1000gns and he immediately made his mark with “Highflier” who was top price at Maynooth at 2100gns, “Hamlet”at 1600gns and “Jason” at 1000gns. “Golden Wonder” daughters were equally as good with H26 winning the All-Ireland at Lyons Estate. “Cush Keystone” was another sire that did well for us breeding big strong sheep with great white heads. Up to this all our stock rams were Irish bred so we decided to have a look across the water. We purchased “Muiresk Ben Cruchan” privately and he did well for us. He was a very well bred sheep and it showed in his females. We went North for our next sire “Hillhead Flash Harry” and he was one of the best we ever bought. He bred “Gold Glint” the Reserve Champion Maynooth purchased by the judge John Mellin for his Hullhouse flock for 1300gns and he bred very well for him. “Flash Harry” also sired the Champion Group from his only crop of lambs. We went North again for our next sire “Tullagh Hollywood” and he must be up there as one of the best ever in the breed. From his only crop of lambs he sired Champion Male, Reserve Champion Male, Group of three and one ram left over won the Shearling Ram Class the following year. “Teiglum Jackpot” and “Tamnamoney Jolly Roger” followed and both sired Champion Groups Blessington. Most sires were now being purchased in partnership as was “Tullagh Neptune” and what a fantastic breeder he proved to be, he was Champion Northern Premier Sale. “Neptune” sired Male and Female Champions at Blessington and it was his females that hit the headlines winning the AllIrelands ’09 and ’10. It was ’09 Champion which was sold for €10,000 to Proctors Farm where she bred the Welsh Premier Sale Champion and was Grand dam of the Royal Highland Show and Royal Welsh Show Champions. “Ettrick Oki Doki” was another sire that did very well siring Reserve Champion Blessington and many more good carcass sheep. “Knock Rafiki” was next, a big long sheep he bred very good females including All-Ireland Female Champion and a Reserve Female Champion Blessington. The next two sires came from Lanark “Wayside Topgun” and “Knock Ursus” and they are proving to be outstanding female breeders. The majority of the ewes in the Champion Flock were by those last three sires. Over the years we have been fortunate to have won all the major titles but what gives us most satisfaction is to see sheep we sold do well for their new owners. It is also satisfying to see the society with such a large membership and in such a healthy financial position, long may it continue. The setbacks we had were more than compensated for by the successes and the many friends we made. 123

Co. Wexford Sheepbreeders Association 2015 was a very successful year for the Co. Wexford Sheepbreeders Association. There was a rise in the number of rams sold and a significant rise in prices across all sheep breeds. Texel ram lambs were of a very high standard and there was plenty of interest around the ring. Anne Murphy of Belcarrig, Gorey showed the winner at our first Show & Sale and he later was sold on for â‚Ź560. Fram Jeffrey of Middleton, Co. Cork was judge on the day. At our second Show and Sale, Richard Moore from Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny was the judge and he also picked the winner from the pen of Anne Murphy. He was lavish in his praise of the very high standard of all rams on view. Our members are looking forward to 2016 with great enthusiasm. Our year ended as usual with a very enjoyable night out at our Dinner Dance and presentation of trophies at the Farmers Kitchen Wexford.

Irish Texel Sheep Breed Society Originally published in Irish Farmers Journal July 24th 1976. Written by G.J More O’Ferrall. Agricultural Institute, Dunsinea Dear Sir, Clearance was given earlier this year by the Veterinary Section of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for the distribution of Texel Sheep in this country. A fairly large importation of Texel sheep from the Island of Texel was made by the Department of Agriculture in 1972. These animals have been held in quarantine on Department farms for the past three years and were given a clean ‘bill of health’. Breeders who had been participating the Departments flock recording schemes over the past few years were invited to make an application for Texel sheep. Fifteen breeders were chosen by ballot in the spring of this year and were allocated four ewes each with the option of also purchasing a ram.
131
Following the original importation of Texels in 1964, extensive experiments carried out by the Department and the Agriculture Institute provided evidence of the high carcase quality of this breed. In tests with other ram breeds, Texel cross lambs were much superior in the percentage of lean meat in the carcase and they had a correspondingly low percentage of fat. Consequently they can be killed at considerably higher carcase weights without the disadvantage of becoming overfat. Texel lambs also have excellent conformation and for many years have commanded a premium on the Dutch and French markets. The inaugural meeting of the Irish Texel Sheep Breed Society was held recently and was attended by the fifteen breeders who purchased Texel sheep together with representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Agricultural Institute. At this meeting it was decided to set up the Irish Texel Flock Book and a Grading-Up register for FI crossbred ewes which were born as a result of artificial insemination with individual Texel ram semen in 1975 and 1976. Semen from the rams was made available while the breed was still held in quarantine. The officers of the Society elected for the coming years were; ChairmanJohn Mee, Four Roads, Co. Roscommon. Vice Chairman-Michael Ryan, Grianan Estate, Speenogue, Lifford, Co. Donegal and Hon. Secretary- Dr. G.J More O’Ferrall, Agricultural Institute Dunsinea, Castleknock, Co. Dublin. Further information can be obtained from the Secretary- G.J. More O’Ferrall, Agricultural Institute Dunsinea.

South West TEXEL report Our Texel year started off with the South West Region first ever Munster National Texel Sheep Classes, which were held at Charleville Show on 28th of June. The Milltown Sale was held on 3rd of September. It was decided to run it as a evening multibreed sale. This proved to be a tremendous boost to the sale of rams on the night. Sheena & Eddie McCarthy had the Champion on the night with their hogget ram. Robert Walker had Reserve Champion with a ram lamb. We would like to thank Michael Horan for judging the show. The main Society Open Sale in our region was held in Roscrea, it was slightly challenged on the day to get the sale going but there was an average clearance. I would like to thank the South West Sheep Breeders and beyond for their support at all events throughout the year and wish them all the very best for 2016. Special word of thanks to SinĂŠad, Society Secretary for her help in 2015. Pat Landers Secretary SW Region

New breeders should generally buy their foundation stock at Society Sales held during the months of August, September and October. All sheep sold through these sales have been passed by Society Inspectors as being properly notched, identified and as having no inherent faults. If breeders purchase stock privately from other breeders either in Ireland, Northern Ireland or Britain they should ensure that they are identified properly. Pedigree stock should be free from obvious faults, such as wrong 141
mouths, bad legs, black patches on the wool or brown hair on the head and legs. Such privately bought sheep will be liable to inspection and if considered unsuitable, will be removed from the Society flock book. All flockowners are actively encouraged to participate in the Lambplus breed improvement scheme run by Sheep Ireland. All members of the Society are automaticlly members of Sheep Ireland as the Irish Texel Sheep Society are using the online flock book and database facilities of Sheep Ireland. On joining the Society, each new breeder is assigned their own unique 3 letter flock code. New flock codes are also given a prefix usually of the breeder’s choice. This flock code and prefix are unique for each flock and are used in naming any rams born into the flock.
