The Tide is not a slum, but a compound of slums, several communities together, as if they were different quarters, an almost - informal city with about 150.000 thousand inhabitants. The beginning of the occupation executes in the area of the Compound of the Tide felt in the decade of 1940 - period of stronger proliferation of slums in Rio de Janeiro. The comparison of the space of the slum with the myth of the maze is inevitable. In a lot of civilizations, the maze is the symbol of the difficult tests, for the she should pass to penetrate in a new world or in a new state of mind. But a great difference exists between slum and the Greek mythical maze projected by DĂŠdalo - the architect. The slum doesn't have any previous plant; she was not drawn, projected.

The maze - slum is more complex, because it is not fixed, finishing, is in constant transformation.

The beginning of the occupation of the Compound of the Tiod began is the 1940’s the period of largest proliferation of slums in Rio de Janeiro. It occupies an area that lies within the margins of Gulf of Guanabara.

This quarter of slums is considered as most lacking in civic service and most dangerous area of the city.

Today’s conflict in the Compound of the Tide is not among the communities, but the different faction of the drug traffickers and of the organized crime, dividing the slums with this territorial disputes. Rival faction fight battles daily between themselves and the police directly affecting the residents? dail life.

Agnieszka Balut photographer, journalist, painter. In 1984-1994 she was involved in different art activities including making conservations, ceramics, painting (mural and oil) and gilding in Poland and Germany. Shortly after that she worked for three different TV programs; TV Information Agency - Channel 1 News, Journalistic Program - Attention Center and Cultural Program - Panteon preparing TV report and short commentaries. At the same time she initiated cooperation with newspapers. In 1998 she moved to Brazil. At the same time, she continued her cooperation with different international newspapers and worked on different scripts for independent TV producers. Photographs were taken during journalistic different trips and report. By showing life through photographs taken without posing, awareness but yet showing and recognizing emotional and social dimensions within, one may have impression that we are observing the world from a far distance with a hidden camera.

The manipulation of digital photographs is a continuation of the artistic thought. The most important in both painting and photograph is a transformation of the figure. She perceives the world through these images because they are the thoughts between the man and the world. They are the maps of the world.
