AGENDA

Letter from the editor Readers who ignore the letter’s editor to get to the meat of the magazine will have already noticed there’s been something of a revamp in Agenda. We’ve introduced columnists on law, tech and HR; revamped our profiles with additional features on social media and people’s career and work life; refocused the Try This reviews on more specifically business-oriented outlets; focused The List articles on specific areas like dining, places to travel in a weekend from Beijing and tech; and refined the event listings to focus on what Agenda readers are most interested in. I think this helps to really emphasize our roots in Beijing’s business community, and also expands the range of people whom we can meet in any issue. I am also delighted with the columnists we have, and am sure you will enjoy what they have to say. Lawyer Stan Abrams is well known from his ChinaHearsay blog; tech writer Jonathan Heeter also works for Dentsu (one of the largest advertising agencies in Asia), as well as blogging and playing bass; and HR columnist Sarah Jones heads operations at Antal International, winner of the 2012 International Recruiter. In this issue, we meet people involved in taking marketing from the physical meet-and-greet to the digital world. With social media in particular vastly expanding the channels through which people communicate, marketing can seem harder than ever, yet at the end it’s always down to communication. Sina Weibo is only two years old but has already become an almost indispensable aspect of Chinese life, with foreign brands (from BMW to Louis Vuitton) and news outlets (like the New York Times) using it to market themselves within the alwaysenticing Chinese market; we meet their Strategy and Research Coordinator, Yi-Xian Li. We hear from chairman Al Maag on the Business Marketing Association’s plan to expand worldwide. We get the lowdown on Jiepang (“China’s Foursquare”) from their CEO David Liu. We also meet the hugely-respected China watcher Bill Bishop (or @niubi to his Twitter followers) and visual journalist Jonah Kessel, and get the lowdown on Taipei, Sichuan restaurants, places to buy sunglasses, the best projectors, and great places for a works outing.

We WILL Weibo

Yi-Xian Li on Sina Weibo’s cultural importance Interview by David Kuo, photo by Mitchell Pe Masilun

Yi-Xian Li is the Strategy and Research Coordinator at Sina Corporation and one of the only foreigners working at the company. As a New Jersey girl, she is a long way from home, but has settled into life here in Beijing and is immensely enjoying her work in one of the hottest companies out there. Sina Weibo has rapidly become an indispensable facet of Chinese life, affecting everything from media to pop culture to politics. Agenda sits down to ask Yi-Xian some questions about Sina and how people and brands are using weibo.

networking scene here in China. Sina began monetizing in April of this year. As weibo has grown in popularity, it has pushed a lot of traffic to the Sina portal and there has been a dramatic increase in revenue. Our team trains the sales department on how to sell our products to clients in different industries. In addition, I bring a western perspective to help the weibo team better understand how other social networks package their products.

How are people and businesses using weibo? Sina Weibo has over 324 million registered Tell us a little bit about your background. I users. The average time spent on the platform was born and raised in New Jersey and attended is over 70 minutes a day. There are also more than 30,000 government accounts. Many small businesses become an avid weibo user myself. use Sina Weibo as their main company website What do you do at Sina? Cover Spotlight I learn a lot of colloquialisms and what is important to the people around me.

“I believe that Sina Weibo has a better user interface than Twitter. For example, you can easily comment on other people’s posts as well post videos or songs that are directly embedded in the feeds”

Tell us about the VIP account. What are the benefits? The VIP account is a new feature that is also part of Sina Weibo’s monetization effort. For 10 RMB a month, users get a VIP account with a little crown next to their username. Some of the benefits of the VIP account include access to more features such as voice posts, more mobile features, better security, and more personalized page options. A yearly subscription is also available for about 100 RMB. Will there ever be an English user interface for Sina Weibo? There aren’t yet any plans to bring an English language interface because the Chinese market is more than big enough. We focus a lot on Taiwan and Hong Kong, but there’s no push to open an international version anytime soon. [shame! – ed.] What level of competition do you get from Twitter and Tencent Weibo? Many people think that Chinese companies simply clone technology that already exists. However, in many cases, I believe that Sina Weibo has a better user interface than Twitter. For example, you can easily comment on other people’s posts as well post videos or songs that are directly embedded in the feeds. This is something that Twitter came up with only recently. We don’t really see Twitter as a competitor. Twitter is inaccessible in China and Sina Weibo isn’t looking towards expanding into foreign markets because the domestic market is already large enough. There is still only about 30% internet penetration here, leaving a lot of room for growth. Tencent Weibo’s demographic is larger in third and fourth tier cities, while Sina is more traditionally a white-collar web portal.

a lot of celebrities just shifted over. The current queen of Weibo is Yao Chen, who has over 22 million followers. Which foreign companies are most successfully using Sina Weibo, in your opinion? There are currently over 130,000 Enterprise Weibo accounts registered. Over 29% of Fortune 500 companies have opened Sina Weibo accounts. Dove, Johnnie Walker, and Burberry are a few brands that have run very successful campaigns using Sina Weibo. In terms of design, I think BMW has done the best job with their Enterprise Weibo page because instead of crafting separate mini-sites for different campaigns, BMW has designed their page with different tabs that directly correlate to different events. For example, they made use of the tabs to display April’s Beijing Auto Show and the upcoming London Olympics. Tourism and luxury industries especially have a lot of interest in using Sina Weibo to market their brands.

How has weibo use changed China? Weibo has really transformed society in the first, second, and third tier cities. Many people use weibo to draw attention to social causes. For example, during Chinese New Year in 2011, a campaign was run to try and reconnect lost children to their parents. Through posting photos on Weibo, quite a few children were found and reunited with their families. Weibo, as a real-time platform, has also without a doubt increased the speed and spread of news in China. With so many celebrity users, Sina Weibo has made information much more accessible to the average person. It has promoted communication What’s the celebrity take-up of Sina Weibo? and dialogue. tech head For the home entertainment enthusiast, bigger usually means better, so a bigger picture must mean better entertainment - and what could be better than beaming a six foot wide epic Kung Fu movie onto your living room wall? With hundreds of different projectors that run the gamut of price, picture quality, input, and function, it may be hard to know which one is just right for your needs. Agenda breaks them down to help you choose the right device.

Projecting Power

Perfect projectors for personal or professional performance Compiled by David Kuo

Acer H6500 From RMB 5950 and up, this is a great, entry-level 1080p resolution projector at an affordable price. The H6500 weighs only 5.6 pounds, so storing it when not in use or taking it with you for movie night is easy. On the connection panel, you will find a VGA connector, two HDMI connectors, a composite video connector and three RCA phono plugs for component video. One glaring downside to this device is the lack of audio output, so you can’t redirect the audio from the HDMI port to an external speaker system. All-in-all, if you are looking for a cheap, portable, 1080p projector, this isn’t a bad choice.

8

AGENDA

Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 5010 If you are looking for terrific 3D projection, a plethora of connection options, and enough candle power to hold a 10,000 man vigil, look here. For those readers who are into the 3D trend, what could be better than watching 3D on a 72-inch screen? Well, how about watching it on a 120-inch diagonal screen in full 1920 x 1080 resolution? The high lumens and viewing options allow you to change settings so colors look great whether you are in a completely dark room, or a venue with some ambient light. Connection options are too many to list here, but rest assured you will

be able to hook it up to whatever you have at home. One downside to all 3D machines is the glasses (not included in the price of the 5010) so you will need to shell out over RMB 1000 for two pairs of Epson 3D glasses, in addition to the price tag of RMB 19,285 and up.

Epson MegaPlex MG-850HD This is one solid, all-in-one projector with two built-in 10 watt speakers and a dock to project images, music or video from your iPad, iPhone, or iTouch. The MG-850 beams 720p video at 2800 lumens at 3000:1 contrast so you are guaranteed a great picture without oversaturation, and while the device is a hefty 8.4 lbs, it is easy enough to take with you should you wish to do work presentations. Another great feature of the MG-850 is its connectivity which has ports for VGA, USB, and HDMI to connect to your computer. Prices start from RMB 6659. While this isn’t the first projector that allows users to connect their iProducts (see Optoma Neo-i), it is perhaps the best.

Panasonic PT-AE7000U While the name isn’t sexy, the results are. Most notable about this powerhouse (other than the RMB 17,400 price) is the 300,000:1 contrast ratio. This means that you will be able to see the smallest tonal difference between white and black and thus you’ll have an outstanding picture.

To take full advantage of watching a 10-foot wide, 3D, 1080p movie, you will need to be sitting 12 to 15 feet away from the screen (impossible in your author’s cramped Beijing residence) so this device is more suited to grander home entertainment settings. One advantage of this device is the high speed refresh rates of up to a blazing 480Hz, so 3D pictures look cleaner, clearer, and more stable compared with the competition. One limitation to this device is the 3D eyewear (not included), which is battery operated and thus requires vigilant charging if you don’t want the 3D effect to suddenly drop half way through a movie. The 3D effect is broadcast from the projector to the eyewear so you will have to be within range (about 20 feet).

Samsung Galaxy Beam The Galaxy Beam is an Android smartphone that has a built-in 15 lumens projector. While the utility and necessity of a phone with a projector is debatable, this novelty does have a market, even if small. According to Samsung, the Beam can project images up to 50 inches wide, and while it is nothing in comparison to some of the above heavy-duty projectors, this one provides mobility and is great for viewing images or video clips. Of course battery life is an issue, so do not expect to watch feature length films. Instead, this phone is better used for the occasional quick business presentation or sharing some photos with a group of friends. Everything else about the phone is somewhat pedestrian but some will find the projection feature exciting enough. Prices start from RMB 2920 All items available on taobao.com.

Where We’re At

Jiepang CEO David Liu checks out how we all check in Text by Calvin Smith, photo courtesy of David Liu

Jiepang is the leading Chinese location-based service (LBS), and is often referred to as the Chinese equivalent of Foursquare. Founded in 2010, Jiepang already has over 3 million users, which again demonstrates the enormity of the Chinese digital market, and is particularly popular with China’s younger generations. Their CEO, David Liu, told Agenda about working across the Chinese social networks and incentivizing their enthusiastic user community. Tell me a little bit about yourself and how Jiepang got its start. I’m 27, an America-born Chinese who grew up in the Bay Area, and have been doing my own startups since my college days at UCLA, where I was a Mass Communication major. In early 2010, I moved to Beijing to do a mobile startup. I was blessed to meet my co-founder Yuancheng at a Starbucks in Zhongguancun, through friends that had done the Tsinghua–Stanford route and were back in China for their own startups. After a lot of fun brainstorming at Bridge Café, near Wudaoko, we both felt like there was a great opportunity to build a truly mobile social network together.

“Our focus is our niche of post80s and post-90s generations in big cities” 10

AGENDA

What exactly is Jiepang and how is it different from Foursquare? Jiepang is a local, social mobile app that helps friends share and discover places. Our users “check in” on Jiepang, and share that they’ve arrived at a place. It helps people keep in touch, and also discover new places. In China, there’s just more people, and more big cities, and naturally more social networks online – Sina Weibo, Tencent and Weixin (WeChat), RenRen, Kaixin, Douban, to name just a few. Jiepang connects with all of them, so your check-in’s are pushed across different social networks. Recently, we’ve integrated with Weixin to allow our users to easily share a venue on Jiepang, along with a map and further information, into the Weixin app with their Weixin friends. I personally love this feature. Most Jiepang users are from the so-called post-80s, post-90s generations, both highly connected through social media and relatively comfortable meeting new friends through relevant

social networking. I think Jiepang has a unique opportunity to help Chinese users discover new friends with similar interests and backgrounds, by seeing that they frequent similar places.

many new and interesting niche local, mobile services continuing to pop up in Silicon Valley and the US, and I think it’s going to be true in Beijing and China too.

Jiepang grew fairly rapidly from its inception, what do you attribute that success to? First, I’m thankful for the opportunity to serve in the China market, the world’s largest smartphone population. I think this is the number one success factor. Second, we picked a very competitive space. A lot of location based social apps launched around the same time we did. I think the competition was very healthy, and helped quickly validate our concept with users, brands, local merchants, and device makers. Third, doing a location based social network really crosses into multiple domains—social networking, smartphone devices, offline events, brands, and local merchants. We were lucky to bring together a great team with diverse backgrounds, and I believe this helped us rapidly develop Jiepang across these different domains.

LBS is a major marketing platform on paper, but how well has that paid off for your customers? Jiepang has partnered with great brands and local merchants to do some very successful social media campaigns to drive engagement and sharing, as well as to bring foot traffic into stores. We have great repeat partners such as Starbucks, Starwood, North Face, and more. Today, 90% of our revenue comes from brand partnerships, and we expect great future growth from local merchant partnerships as well.

How many active users does Jiepang currently have? We have just over 3,000,000 registered users. While we don’t publish our active user data, we do have a very active user base, especially in the bigger cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. Location Based Services (LBS) are a very competitive market. How has Jiepang managed to retain its user base with so many competitors, both direct and indirect? Competitive markets are huge markets, and we’re sincere believers that there is a huge market for many different location based services. At Jiepang, our focus is our niche of post-80s and post-90s generations in big cities, and curating the community of interesting people and cool local venues has helped us to grow on a differentiated, more interesting path. We also have a strong partner culture. Through our strategic partnerships with social networks, device makers, and brands and merchants, we’ve been able to steadily grow our service. We’re seeing

Where does your revenue stream come from? Since early 2011, we’ve been running paid campaigns for global brands and local merchants, so users are encouraged to check-in and get specials and badges at Starbucks or a local coffee shop. This definitely helps keep the Jiepang business alive and well. If a vendor wants to get listed on Jiepang, what do they have to do? Local merchants can visit the Jiepang for Local Merchants website jiepang.com/business/venues. Vendors can register online or contact our team. We’ll be happy to hear from you! a diy lawyer

In his new column, Stan Abrams gives legal tips for smallscale startups The other day a prospective client, a Beijingbased developer of mobile applications, admitted to me, almost apologetically, that his company’s size put it in the “reverse sweet spot” when it came to legal assistance. His company was just too small (less than ten employees) to either justify an in-house lawyer or much in the way of a budget for outside counsel. At the same time, their recent growth had forced them to confront a variety of legal issues, without adequate professional assistance. Although they will not admit to it, many lawyers will be thinking to themselves, “If I can’t bill these guys at least X hours, it’s not really worth my time.” Fair enough – we all have to make the numbers add up at the end of the month.

until he can afford a lawyer. With that advice, many companies will completely ignore their pressing legal problems, perhaps hoping that these matters can be ignored with no serious repercussions until legal representation can be secured. As you might guess, I consider this strategy to be extremely risky. Some problems, if put off too long, are impossible to fix, or at least become prohibitively expensive. Thankfully, while there is no perfect solution to companies with the “reverse sweet spot” problem, there are ways to mitigate. It’s almost an unwritten rule in the legal profession that one never admits to clients that some legal issues do not require the assistance of an attorney, but let’s ignore that for the moment.

HR BRIEFING

Antal International’s Sarah Jones introduces her new column According to the 2012 Business Climate Survey, powered by the British Chamber of Commerce, “the ability to attract and retain staff has ranked as the number one business issue for two consecutive years, and continues to be a substantial hurdle facing business” .

of fact insight into these burgeoning issues. This regular feature will hopefully answer the questions that go through the minds of most expat managers that work in China at some point during their time here. The column will aim to reassure you that you are not alone in the difficulties you face with all the nuances of recruitment and HR issues, and hopefully provide you with some tips and tricks to help your recruiting go smoother, as well as put a smile on your face when reading some of the anecdotes!

It’s fairly obvious to see the correlation when you see that the percentage of companies hiring at a managerial and professional level in China has increased this quarter. Current hiring rates stand at 72% and will remain in the seventies over the next few months (this information is taken from the Antal Global Snapshot, a regular First, I should say a little bit about me. Throughout my time in this challenging industry I have had the opportunity to work across many different countries, and I can safely say there’s no place like China when it comes to recruiting. It’s an absolute mine-field. I am delighted to share my experiences (both good and bad), ideas, and commentary relating to any and all human capital issues with you expat managers out there. Let’s face it, I am a manager myself, too, and I also have my own stories to tell. As I’m writing this in our Beijing office, we have over one hundred staff, 90% of whom are locals, with the remainder made up of a plethora of nationalities – French, Dutch, Spanish and American to name a few. So what’s in store for our new column over the forthcoming months? I will be discussing the subjects my colleagues and I have recently been interviewed on here in China. I have also taken some time analyzing comments from HR directors and managers that we have spoken with across a number of industries, 75% of whom are expats, to find out what needs discussing, so I think I have all my ducks lined up. (However if you are reading this, and you have a burning question that you need answering please get in touch with Agenda and I will do my best to help.) So here’s what I’ll be discussing:

Visa implications for hiring expats - so many variations, so many opinions! How to train and (particularly) how to retain your staff. Are the values that your potential hires have in alignment with the company vision? Why do people join one company over another? When to use headhunters and what addedvalue headhunters can really provide to companies looking to hire What to do with non-performers? Is there a good way to ‘fire’ people here in China, and can it be done without losing face? How to handle hiring “Generation Z”? It won’t be long until there will be five generations within the work place. Working locally, with a global vision. There are some really juicy topics in there, and I look forward to sharing my ideas with you, from a practical human perspective. See you next issue!

The influence of social networking on recruitment, such as Linkedin and weibo. Can you source candidates from these sites? Will these sites ever replace recruitment firms? Tips and tricks on CVs. Have you ever thought about the fact that here in China, a name-change could make all the difference in getting a new position? How to lead an effective interview, with handy advice for both the interviewer and interviewee.

MarketWatch founder and China-watcher Bill Bishop on how he handles social media Text by Mike Cormack, photo courtesy of Bill Bishop

As one of if not the foremost China watchers on the scene today, Bill Bishop (perhaps better known as @niubi) has been a vital part of the social media ecosystem for some time, through his blogs Sinocism and Digicha, his use of Twitter and Sina Weibo, and his daily email posting and analyzing China-related links and news. AGENDA

When you think about the internet in China, what springs to mind? Maybe it’s the Great Firewall that makes it a little more difficult to tweet or check your Facebook. Maybe it’s the Chinese internet success stories like QQ or Weibo. Maybe it’s the cute 20-something girl sitting next to you in Starbucks drinking a Latte and noodling on her iPad or iPhone. All of these are very real iterations of the internet in China. We meet them face-to-face as we scuffle through yet another smoggy, oppressive Beijing summer. But one of the most important places on the Web isn’t on the Web at all. It’s all around us but we rarely notice it, just as most of us do not see most of what goes on in the Chinese internet, or only get a taster of it through translation sites like ChinaSMACK.com. For China’s migrant laborers, the internet café is much more than a place to play games and down a can of Wang Lao Ji. The internet café is a buzzing hive of activity that most of us, safely ensconced in front of our laptop screens, never see. First and foremost, these venues are a place of connection to the countryside. Without QQ (China’s massively popular on-line messaging service), most migrants wouldn’t be able to afford regular contact with their families. The emoticon-laced chats are like letters from the Front, helping China’s urban migrants deal with the pain of missing a child’s birthday, or more prosaically, the domestic routine of family life. The cafés also offer another precious commodity: the privacy to escape. I know it’s hard to imagine that a crowded, smoky rat-hole strewn with empty bottles could be a private place, but compare it to the alternative. If you’re living cheek-to-jowl with a dozen other construction workers in a dorm room, an internet café offers at least the illusion of privacy. For migrants, the computer becomes a private portal to escape, to soak into. In a net bar, the

big screen in front of you pulls you into a place where your surroundings vanish into your chat or game. World of Warcraft and other role-playing games are so popular precisely because they offer a simulated version of a better life where success is attainable, and can be gained through easily-comprehensible steps and actions. They act as virtual worlds that replace the drudgery of yet another blue-collar day. In the West, corporations like Starbucks claim to offer a “third space,” a special environment that’s neither the home nor the office. Internet cafés in China offer escape and connection, escape from the dull grey monotony of manual labor and connection with the families and social life left behind. While the process of China’s economic development has been a massive success on a macroscale, if you peer between the cracks, even in a discipline as fast-moving and modern as tech, you can see swathes of the population dealing with the dislocation and pain that urbanization brings. Thinking about internet cafés and the migrants that rely on them helps remind us that technology doesn’t really matter. How we benefit from it does.

PureLiving’s CEO Louie Cheng comes clean Text by David Kuo, photo courtesy of Louie Cheng

Beijing’s occasionally “crazy bad” air is of course a perennial concern, but environmental issues are more all-compassing than that, with one’s apartment and water source equally liable to degradation and thus cause illnesses or disease. The building cleansing firm PureLiving were founded in Shanghai but are opening a Beijing branch – let it never be said that entrepreneurs fail to exploit opportunities. Their CEO Louie Cheng told Agenda how they want to clean up. What was your background before China? I was in the US Army for many years, where I ran a nuclear, biological, and chemical defense unit. I went back to school to get an MBA, became a strategy consultant for IBM, then was the Asia Pacific strategy director for Thomson Reuters' scientific division. All of these experiences have really helped me with PureLiving, from the technical aspects to knowing how to listen to clients. PureLiving started in Shanghai, but how is the Beijing market different? I actually lived in Beijing when I first came to China, so it's my second home! Beijing's outdoor air is much more polluted than Shanghai's - the level of fine particulates in the air is higher and this impacts indoor air. However, Shanghai seems to have a faster rate of renovation, so we see higher levels of chemical emissions indoors than in Beijing. However, at the end of the day, everyone is concerned about clean air and water, so clients' needs are really the same.

Who are your clients? We have both residential and commercial clients. We started with expat residents as our base, but we’ve spread to more Chinese clients (usually educated or having lived overseas), and to commercial clients. Our residential clients are usually families with children, and may be new arrivals or longtime China hands who just want to check out their home's health report card. On the commercial side, we work with multinational companies, corporate real-estate professionals, relocation companies, architects, builders, and facilities managers. The most common reason companies call us is when they have finished a renovation or new building and they’re having air quality concerns or smells. We help them determine how healthy the workplace is, fix any problems, and communicate w i t h e m p l oye e s. Frequently, clients come to us when their staff have al-

The older I get, the more cameras, monitors, tripods and equipment I have. This correlates to, the older I get the less space I have. Ergo, I really need an office that constantly expands with time. The only two things that really wear me out mentally are not producing good work and being in the same location for too long at a time. I'm 32-years-old and I've never really felt bored with work and very rarely felt burnt out. This is a little weird, because I've been working seven days a week for many years! If you really love what you do, I think work continues to stay interesting and you get energized by it. In many ways, it doesn't always feel like work, it’s just my natural course of action. Like eating or brushing your teeth, I take pictures and I tell stories. I'm not exactly sure what my childhood dream job was, but I don't think I'm that far off it now. From my middle school yearbook till today, I've been involved in journalism. I started a degree in New Orleans, but eventually studied abroad in New Zealand and Australia. Those experiences just made me want to travel more. So I did. The more places I went, the less I wanted to stop traveling. My nomadic curiosity led to a degree in journalism, but it didn't quench my desire to see the world. So at some point, I decided I wanted people to pay me to travel and take pictures. It wasn't a smooth or easy journey until the point where that became a reality, but I pushed and pushed and never stopped doing what seemed right. The best thing about what I do? Having the amazing privilege of seeing an enormous variety of cultures and landscapes.

AGENDA

The most frustrating and most satisfying project has been the redesign of China Daily. I came to China after redesigning newspapers in North Africa, which was extremely challenging. But the challenges in China, dealing with the realities of state media were mind-bogglingly frustrating. For example, we changed the nameplate — and not only did the managing editor have to approve it, but every previous (living) managing editor had to, as well. The biggest challenges often yield very satisfying results. This experience taught me a lot about Chinese media, Chinese government and how Chinese people see and perceive visual information in relativity to people in the West. A blend of technical skills, cross cultural communication skills and perhaps most importantly, the skill to simply overcome obstacles, regardless of what they are, to get projects done on time, are my essential assets. This might sound lame but my biggest challenge is often scheduling. Getting clients to commit to a timeline, book gigs early enough and then fit everything in is a bit of a nightmare. For example, this summer during a six week stint, I'm working or traveling in China, Mongolia, Qatar, three different US States, Canada and France. If one person changes their schedule it can have enormous consequences. “Where I am now is where I need to be.” I’ve found this phrase to be tremendously true in my life. This includes the good times, and the tough times. It’s a tough job market out there, but that’s no reason to not do what you love. Even if at first you have to do something less than ideal, keep shooting. Keep shooting, keep pushing your limits and keep learning. If you do this, I believe you’ll get where you want to be. All of the other places along the way will help you get there — they are necessary steps. See Jonah’s work at jonahkessel.com

Lessons in the Art of War

by Martina Sprague

War is a human activity, one that is not limited by geographic location. And the principles of war are the same, regardless of place or number of participants. An army of ten thousand engaged in battle uses the same basic strategies that two people in single combat will utilize. In Lessons in the Art of War, author Martina Sprague explores the writings of both Sun Tzu, the famous Chinese military strategist, and Carl von Clausewitz, the European military genius. Despite the differences in time period, geographic location and culture, both Sun Tzu and von Clausewitz had achieved extraordinary understanding of human nature and how that relates to combat. Sprague takes the similarities and differences in their respective strategies and distills them down to their essence for martial artists to understand and incorporate into their personal practices.

insight - perfect day in beijing

a fine time with wine

Randy Lee Svendsen, spokesman, 1421 Wines Text by Jessica Zhang, photo by Judy Zhou

Day and night I am out promoting our fine Chinese wines from Xinjiang Province, and I always have fun doing it, so I have the best job on the planet! I like to squeeze in some relaxation on Sundays, though. Getting up around 7:30am, I am excited to enjoy a new day and I brew some fresh coffee. After checking my emails, I call my Mom or Dad or one of my two sons in America on Skype to see what’s happening with them. Then it’s time to go! Splashing on some Old Spice after a clean shave, I leave my apartment for Sunday brunch dressed in a Tang Zhuang. I alternate between Temple Restaurant and Yi House Bistro at Grace Hotel, both of which have a delightful brunch with excellent food and service. I always start with two double gin Bloody Marys to relax before eating. Then I enjoy phase after phase of delightful culinary creations with a bottle of my 1421 Chardonnay. Full and happy, around 3pm I go home to change into something more casual. My next stop is Mali’s Wine Cellar. Mali has a great wine shop where she has informative wine tastings where people come to enjoy her wines and have fun. Mali focuses on good value wines from around the world so when I am looking for good deals in wine, I go to Mali’s. She has traveled to many wine regions and she is very well versed in wine, so I get good advice from her.

fill the glasses, music and laughter fill the air, I pick something light, either a bucket of Mussels with French Fries or a Cheese and Pâté Platter, which I enjoy with a glass of 1421 Cabernet Sauvignon while talking with other guests and the staff. Finally I order dessert, the intensely rare Baked Alaska. This is only the fifth restaurant in 40 years where I have found Baked Alaska and this one is the best! Starting with vanilla sponge cake, vanilla ice cream is added and another layer of sponge cake on top. This is coated with meringue and toasted in the oven at high temperature for a few minutes to firm and brown the meringue. The ice cream will not melt because the meringue acts as an insulator. This is placed in front of me and the bartender puts a generous portion of Grand Marnier in a small pitcher and lights it on fire. Preferring to do it myself, I pour the flaming Grand Marnier over the meringue, making flames a foot high and slightly burning my hand, but it is worth it….it looks simply awesome! Happily content, around 11pm I bid goodnight to everyone and disappear into the night. Temple Restaurant Beijing, 23 Songzhusi Temple, Shatan Beijie, Dongcheng District (8400 2232) 北京市东城区五四大街以北,北沙滩23号 Grace Beijing, Unit 1, 706 Houjie, 798 Art District (enter from north gate), 2 Jiuxianqiao Lu, Chaoyang District (6436 1818) 朝阳区酒仙桥路 2号798艺术区内706后街1号

At 5pm I go to my favorite place to chill, Scarlett Wine Bar & Restaurant at Hotel G and I take “my” seat at the bar. The bartender automatically makes my Martini with no vermouth so I can spray a mist of Noilly Prat Dry over the top from my Misto Martini Sprayer. French themed and casual, the atmosphere at Scarlett is relaxing and fun. While good wines and champagne
