AGENDA

Letter from the editor Numerous commentators have remarked on the difficulty of a country breaking out of the middle-income trap. While, as is now well known, China has the world’s second largest economy, on a per capita basis it ranks only 88th (according to the International Monetary Fund in 2011). This places it between the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, with an average GDP per person of US $5,414, in comparison to Japan at US $45,920 and the United States at US $48,387 – the nations in third and first place in total GDP ranking. Lots of intelligent people have been adding their voice to the debate on how China can rise the per capita ladder. The simple answer is of course, as Steve Jobs said, to innovate: to develop the smart products that are widely desired and which paint a positive picture of the country of their origin. (The Soviet bloc, to be ridiculously simplistic, never recovered from its association with cars like the Lada, while Apple products are perfect soft power totems for the US). And now that wages are rising in China and low-cost, low-skill industries are moving to Vietnam and Laos, the old high export economic model for China isn’t what it is. It therefore falls to entrepreneurs, innovators and techheads to create China 2.0. China’s success in producing engineers and scientists is well known. (I think I read somewhere that Chinese is the largest ethnicity in Silicon Valley). Currently in Beijing there is a wave of companies producing digital products and utilizing the internet to come up with these very innovations. From online multiplatform gaming to educational apps to download analytics to fashion digital media and apps, expats and entrepreneurs are finding Beijing an immensely fruitful place to be. The skilled labor pool, the immense scale of the domestic internet market and the advanced means of monetization also make Beijing the place to be for ambitious companies. The journalist Jonathan Watts, departing Beijing after nine years, said he felt privileged to have been in Beijing at such a time: that it was “a front-row seat” at a time of immense changes. The digital dreamers featured within not only have a front seat: they are the ones driving the changes. Enjoy hearing from them – I certainly have.

COMMUNITY MINDED

Cmune CEO Ludovic Bodin Text by Mike Cormack, photo by Sui

Gaming infrastructure and the industry model have been radically transformed by the internet. Online gaming is now transitioning to mobile devices, causing a further shift in how games are distributed and paid for. One company at the forefront of this quantum leap is Cmune, based in Sanlitun Soho. Their 1st-person shooter Uberstrike is available on Facebook and on smartphones, and comprises an amazing 1% of Apple’s App Store entire downloads. Their CEO Ludovic Bodin told Agenda about it.

What’s your business background? Cmune is my fourth company, making it my thirteenth year working in tech. I met my business partner Shaun LeLacheur in Beijing in 2005; he’s the real tech guy, and I’m more the mobile and internet business guy. In 2006, we created a company in Macau called macau.com. Shaun then was writing a book on 3D computing, and we were still interested in working together, so we put our heads together, thought up some ideas and came up with Cmune.

When was Cmune founded? What was the purpose or goal? Cmune was founded in 2007, with the aim to built a platform to operate across Facebook, all browsers, Apple, Windows, everything. Our game Uberstrike is the first 3D game which will be playable across all channels, including Mac iOS, Android and PC, and we also intend to launch in China through Qihu360. Are you based only in Beijing or do you have other offices? Why Beijing? We originally started in Seoul but moved to Beijing. Korea is

AGENDA

exciting for research and development, and lots of stuff is developed there, but it’s not the best place for a worldwide company. Beijing is the intersection of China, Asia and the west. For a tech company it’s the ideal place to be. When did you first create Uberstrike? What was the inspiration behind it? Uberstrike launched 18 months ago. The gameplay is inspired by classic first-person games like Quake and Counterstrike. The tweak is to make it more accessible, so people can play it anywhere, it’s free to play and it has a large social element. You can invite friends to play, you can compete, there’s a global chat, a clan function and private rooms available just for friends. Facebook and social gaming seem to be the future of gameplaying. But how do you monetize from that? Social gaming is actually going to work on any platform. The idea (and name) of Cmune is based on “community”. We want to encourage communal expression and participation, wherever and however people use it. We monetize through sales in the game, for example of armor and weapons. The Asian market is far more advanced at selling online goods like that, and that was a good reason to be based here in Beijing – along with the size of the Chinese market! What’s the Blue Box for Uberstrike? How popular has it been? Blue Box is a participatory community where members can be creative and grow the game. Players and designers create maps and weapons via tools which we provide for free. Some maps from the community are chosen by a committee and become part of the game. We’re building on games like Doom and Quake II which had players creating expansion packs, and with the tools available today we can really take it to the next level. Old-style computer games were reviewed in magazines and sold in shops. How do you market online games? It’s word-of-mouth. People see that their friends are playing them and can have a try themselves. Accessibility

is the key – every launch gets new people drawn in. What are the technical challenges of going onto different platforms like Android and Facebook? Technically, every platform has its limitations. There’s no such thing as the perfect games machine. But with our games being hyper-accessible, the development and Quality Assurance cycles become very complex. That’s the major challenge. I see you’re recruiting quite extensively. How do you source the skills and experience you need? We have twelve positions open, half local and half international. We recruit from around the world, and we have no preference for where international staff come from: we just want the best people. We have staff from South Africa, France, a guy coming out here from Scotland… It’s never easy to find the very best people, but we make the effort to do that. Zynga obviously went public for a vast amount of money. Do you aspire to the same path? Tencent’s model is more interesting; same with Electronic Arts. We’re really in two worlds, halfway between being something social and something like a traditional console game. So we’re something new. Of course we have the same ambition as Zynga! For yourself, what’s your own ultimate goal? For me, it’s to build this participatory platform, where people not only play but also create and learn together. The future of the internet is about participating. Play is part of that, but there’s also the urge to create. So the web goes from being about searching to connecting to participating. Zynga is just about play. Immersive and multiplayer games are really what grab people, and makes them invest emotion in what they’re doing. You know, with these games, people make friends and meet physically. I’ve travelled a lot, and these things are a way to build a global community, or even to be a way to rebuild a civic engagement. Everything’s possible.

Model technique

Model Anina takes fashion mobile Text by Mike Cormack, photos by Mitchell Pe Masilun

Fashion isn’t usually considered a tech-friendly discipline, but there are tech-heads and geeks even within the cohorts of the beautiful. International model Anina is based in Beijing and, alongside her long-running fashion-andtech blog anina.net, has been developing fashion apps, and works to empower women to use technology. She told Agenda about her digital developments in the world of style.

“People are moving towards an integrated learning and discovery experience where they can get the relevant information they need, when it is important, via the power of the mobile” 6

Can you tell us about your background in fashion – what or who was the inspiration? I am an international model who has worked for top fashion magazines, designers, photographers and catalogs. Linda Evangelista was my inspiration because of her spirit. She took what she had and created beauty in front of the camera for everyone to see. Tabula Rasa

The best tablets today Compiled by David Kuo

With a multitude of tablets rolling out each year, it’s hard to know which one best suits you. Do you prefer the simplicity and prestige of iOS, or does the flexibility, utility and variety of Android do it for you? Do you need something simply for reading or something more multimedia-oriented? While some of these tablets are still waiting to make their mainland debut, resourceful Agenda readers will no doubt find a way to get their hands on these hot gadgets.

Apple iPad To start with the king of mobile devices, the new iPad boasts some impressive upgrades from the second generation incarnation, including an eye-popping 2048 x 1536 resolution, perfect for watching 1080p movies on the go, and a rear-facing camera shooting 1080p HD video. A ten hour battery life and a market that has already surpassed 300,000 apps will ensure that users stay constantly entertained. The dual-core A5X processor provides great speeds for browsing, downloading and gaming. While not available in the mainland quite yet, eager buyers passing through Hong Kong can get one for about RMB 3,300 for the basic 16GB, WiFi model.

10

AGENDA

Asus Transformer Pad TF300 While Android tablets have usually lagged a bit behind the iPad, the TF300 offers a lot in the way of utility, personalization, and affordability. Shipping with Android 4.0 and a peppy 1.2GHz Quad Core Tegra 3 processor, this slim tablet also offers an optional keyboard dock which transforms it into a highly versatile and productive machine. Users have the option to personalize CPU performance which in turn can lengthen battery life. The resolution is still sharp at 1280 x 800 but a slight downgrade in nits means that when using it outdoors, screen brightness must be maxed out. RMB 2,450 for 32GB of storage is a great deal and the three color options (red, white, or blue) make for an eyecatching alternative to the usual black and grey that seems to be the industry standard.

Sony Tablet S Perhaps the most notable difference about this tablet is the shape. The folded edge design is quite novel and is great when sitting on flat surfaces to type. It is also comfortable when holding it in landscape, but some users may find one-handing it a bit cumbersome. The Tablet S is also significantly thicker than some of the rivals. This tablet was

designed with gamers in mind and comes with the PlayStation Suite so that gamers can play PlayStation and PSP games through an emulator. The 1280 x 800 display supports brilliant colors and great viewing angles, and the dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2, 1GHz processor is more than adequate to handle graphicintensive applications. A new Tablet S should cost you around RMB 3,100.

Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10.1 The previous Tab was for a time the best Android alternative to the iPad. While almost identical in specs to the previous Tab, the Tab2 is somewhat heavier and thicker, and has some other cosmetic changes to the corners that give it a different feel in the hand. The 1280 x 800 resolution looks great and graphic-heavy apps and video are well supported with 1GHz processor. Running on Android 4.0, Samsung has cut about $100 off the price to compete with some of the higher-end, high-spec tablets out there and the new Tab2 retails for around RMB 2,550 for the entry-level 16GB WiFi model.

Motorola Xoom 2 The second generation Xoom makes some major changes and is now lighter and slimmer than its clunky older brother. The 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM handles most workloads and Android 4.0 smoothly enough. Other changes include beveled corners and a more graceful camera positioning. Screen resolution still stands at 1280 x 800 but the new IPS upgrade supports viewing angles upwards of 170 degrees and images and video still look great in the sun. The native applications seem inoffensive and even useful, especially for users who are keen on Cloud services for storing media. Priced at the higher end of Android tablets at RMB 3,370, for 10 inches of screen and 16GB storage, the Xoom 2 is still good bang for your buck.

Amazon Kindle Fire It has been hard to ignore all the recent praise accorded to the Kindle Fire. While it is not meant to compete with some of the tech-heavy tablets out there, considering its function and price, the Kindle Fire has got to be one of the best e-readers out there. For users who are avid media consumers and who are willing to embrace the convenience of Cloud services, the Kindle is king. The Fire’s diminutive size and weight means that it is extremely portable and that your wrists won’t suffer from extended reading marathons. But don’t be fooled: this isn’t your grandmother’s colorless e-reader. The 1024 x 600 resolution supports 16 million colors for great video viewing. The Kindle Fire is a great buy at RMB 1,400.

Spotlight Amongst the smartest new media companies are digital brands managers, who have taken traditional advertising and developed it to now manage the entire output and network of relationships of a company, throughout the online ecosystem. Working to use social media, online communities, ecommerce sites, websites and more, Katana operate in Beijing and London and successfully serve luxury clients; their managing director Andrew Thacker met Agenda to tell us how they do it.

Katana was originally a trading company set up with my brother, which led to a commodities firm. We built a multi-million pound business, but at 30 I realized it wasn’t the one and left for the islands of South-East Asia (where my heart is), spending the next couple of years working as a diving instructor. I then returned to London (with a good tan and worn out flip-flops) to set up Katana Mark II, a brand consultancy, from a desk in my living room. What are your day-to-day functions in Katana? The Way To Wine

The best places for wine in Beijing Compiled By Mike Cormack

While good quality beer is certainly making headway in Beijing these days, both in stores and bars, oenophiles may find good quality wine harder to locate. Sure, you can always find a Cabernet Sauvignon at 7/11, but if you’re after something a little less pedestrian, there aren’t any quality liquor stores, even if you include the cigarettes and Baijiu joints everywhere. But with a little research you can dig out great quality bottles. Agenda lists some of the best, just for you. Pudao Wines Pudao Wines hits the higher end of the wine market. What contributes most to App Annie’s success today? I guess there are two main reasons. First, we are early to the market. The need for accurate market data is huge and we are lucky that we sensed this customer need at an early stage. You know, for our first year and a half we spent zero money on marketing but there were still customers rushing in. Our entire promotion strategy relies on the spread of wordof-mouth, so our products are well-received in the market. Second, our design is easier to use. Most designs on the web are overflowing with features and confuse their users. Yet our UI design is quite simple and our brand design is cute and fun.

the List Whether you are on the beach with beverage and iPhone in hand, or you are conference calling from your couch, working out of the office has many great benefits, especially in Beijing summers. To make sure you are fully equipped to telecommute or a take brief sojourn away from the workplace cauldron, Agenda looks at some of the most crucial mobile office tools for the modern worker to help you stay connected, informed, and efficient.

Mobile Office Tools

Helping you step out the office Compiled by David Kuo

Laptop Without a doubt, having a great, lightweight laptop is the most important tool for modern mobile warriors. Different types of users will require varying degrees of hardware, but for the casual worker a netbook should suffice. The MacBook Air is a wildly popular choice but there are also great Windows machines from Asus, Hewlet Packard and Dell available. Although tablets have come a long way, they still offer limited storage options and often cumbersome document editing, and so won’t be able to replace your laptop in most situations. If you are looking to complete your netbook, smart phone and tablet trifecta, check out Agenda’s rundown on the best tablets in the market on page 8. Bluetooth Headset Going mobile is also going wireless. Getting rid of tangled wires and going hands-free with Bluetooth headsets is a liberating feeling, especially for those of us

AGENDA

who talk and drive frequently or bemoan that we were not born with more hands. Most cell phones include integrated Bluetooth options and there are a lot of stylish headsets that provide great audio quality without looking too much like a cyborg. Headsets from Jawbone, Plantronics, Motorola, and BlueAnt have repeatedly come out with quality headsets. Stereo options with two ear pieces are also available from LG and Plantronics. Audiophiles will however be a little disappointed, as wireless sound quality has not yet been able to match the quality from traditional wired standards. USB Modem Aside from the expensive initial purchase of the modem, monthly service fees are quite high and come with an additional per megabyte surcharge, but these handy devices ensure that you will have an internet connection no matter where you are. If you

are anything like your humble author, then forgetting to pay the internet bill results in irritating downtime and decreased productivity. China Unicom offers a 3G USB modem for RMB 300 and various data plans starting at RMB 80 per month for 1GB and RMB 150 per month for 3GB. Don’t expect to get service outside of Beijing’s city limits however, as the telecom monopolies are still working on getting comprehensive coverage and service to other parts of China. VoIP What could be better than free computer-to-computer video conference calls? Skype and many other Voice over Internet Protocol services from Google or Vonage are out there and are great tools to stay connected to coworkers across continents and time zones. Skype is the popular choice and offers monthly subscriptions and cheap international calling rates. Google Voice is a great tool for people to sync their home, mobile and office numbers under one free umbrella number. Users can block numbers and route incoming calls to a specific location. For example, all incoming calls from your mother-in-law directly go to voicemail. Voicemails are also transcribed to text and sent as an email or text message. Cloud Services Cloud services are becoming more popular these days because it allows users to edit and collaborate on documents, backup data, and access it anywhere there is an internet connection. Some of the

more popular storage and backup services are Dropbox and Google Drive. Quicknote, recently purchased by Google, is a mobile application designed to allow users to remotely create, edit, store and share PowerPoint, Excel and Word documents. Another popular option is Evernote which also allows users to access and edit data across multiple machines and operating system platforms. There are obviously many benefits to accessible data backup, but users should beware of storing sensitive company data on third party servers. Cloud servers are becoming likely targets for malicious hackers looking for credit card information, telephone numbers and private emails. VPN A Virtual Private Network provides privacy and security through tunneling protocols and other security measures such as encryption. VPNs can serve two functions. The first is to bypass those pesky website restrictions to which we are subjected. As internet users in China, getting access to some indispensable online tools can be problematic (Facebook, Twitter, GoogleDocs, and so on). Free and paid VPNs exist but for users that need frequent and reliable connections, paid services are recommended and range from RMB 1 per day to US $10 per month. The second function of a VPN is to provide roaming users with a secure and stable connection to the office intranet. Establishing a VPN on mobile devices is also becoming more popular as these devices start to replace laptops.

He spoke to Agenda about the company, the product and their culture.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I'm an American lost in China's internet. For the past three years, I've blogged about China tech, mostly at TechRice.com. And five months ago, I entered the industry myself, as product manager for international at a Chinese startup, Wandoujia. Although I grew up close to Silicon Valley, I wasn't always a geek. I once aspired to enter foreign policy, but that plan was shattered by a three-month internship at the US State Department. The Chinese government erects a few more barriers, but internet is still one of the freest industries in the country. Private companies, not state-owned enterprises, lead the way. product, like so much of the Chinese internet, is tricky to explain to foreigners. In China, mobile phone assistants (手机助手) are a well-defined product category. Outside of China, nobody knows what you're talking about. Briefly: Wandoujia is an easy way to manage your Android smartphone from your PC. iTunes is the closest equivalent outside of China, but it's a misleading comparison. iTunes is 11 years old, a sprawling behemoth. Our product is entirely focused on the small part of iTunes that's for managing your smartphone and downloading content (apps, video, music).

How did Wandoujia get started? Wandoujia is the second company from Innovation Works, the startup incubator founded by ex-Google China President Kaifu Lee. CHILDREN’S BEST FRIEND

SmarTots’s Jesper Lodahl on children’s education apps Text by Rachel Chen, photo by Judy Zhou

After nine years of working for Nokia world wide, Jesper Lodahl finally found a place to call home where he can truly engage in his passion about children’s education and technology. Both as a successful entrepreneur and a family oriented father of two daughters, Jesper told Agenda how his affair with SmarTots started and how this inspiration has inspired his beloved family.

What was your business background prior to SmarTots? I’ve always been interested in education. I worked for Nokia for seven years and then I took an expat position in Nokia China and worked there for two years. Then I decided to quit and started a social network called Club Beautiful for Chinese. What made you come to China to start SmarTots? What was your inspiration back then? tiful kids. When the iPad first came out, I saw how my daughters were engaging with it; she was learning Spanish with one app and having tremendous fun. I saw a great opportunity in combining education and entertainment using the iPad, as it’s such a fantastic device for the kids. Then we started to look into what it could do in children’s education and the problem was when the kids are so engaged with the iPad, they almost disappear into it. In fact, I think parents should stay connected with what the kids are learning so we started SmarTots.

the List Whether you’re newly arrived or a seasoned veteran in the Middle Kingdom, Beijing can be a tough place to navigate. While it is in many ways a pleasant and certainly a non-violent city, especially considering its size, there are a few things of which to be wary. Inevitably, there are lots of tourist traps and scams trying to sucker the unsuspecting foreigner out of their hard-earned renminbi. Agenda takes a look at some of these to help the unsuspecting.

Keep clear

Things and places to avoid in Beijing Compiled by David Kuo

Houhai Once upon a time, Houhai and the surrounding lakes used to be important commercial waterways connecting Beijing to Hangzhou but today another kind of commercial exploitation has taken over. Rickshaw operators ring the outskirts and offer visitors overpriced rides around the lake and through the surrounding hutongs, an area that is best explored by bicycle or by foot. Photographers have taken over the more scenic spots and are more than willing to help you take group photos, but beware, they charge exorbitant prices to print. The indistinguishable bars around Houhai cater more to the Chinese market, offering warm Tsingtaos at RMB 30 a pop, generic cover bands, eye-gouging prices for fake wine and little else. During the summer months, it is nice to boat around the lake and take a drink or two while gazing at the moons reflection in the oily sheen that coats the lake surface. Locals less averse to dirty

water can be seen swimming and fishing, despite the “No Swimming, No Fishing” signage. Should you find yourself in Houhai, my suggestion is to make it quick. There are quirky and fun places to be discovered, but don’t expect to be inundated with any worthwhile Chinese culture. Silk Market The infamous Silk Market. This mammoth seven story, 35,000m2 tourist trap (or shopping center) is chaotic on the weekends and often touted as a great place to find bargains. However the Silk Market houses mostly low quality knock-off goods of every sort. Entering the main entrance on the first floor is running the gauntlet of overly aggressive vendors who will not hesitate to forcibly grab you by the arm and cajole you by any means possible into purchasing that silk robe or bad shanzai pair of Calvin Klein jeans that you don’t really need. Also, don’t

plan on out-bargaining the sales people. They are professional hucksters that will leave you with the short end of the stick. Here are a couple tips if you have to make the trip to the Silk Market: first, take a local Chinese with you to help you negotiate the stalls and prices. While this does not guarantee a fair price, it will negate the “Laowai Tax”. Second, only offer prices on items you are genuinely interested in as vendors will be offended if they think you are just playing games with them and wasting their time. Last, look but don’t buy. The Silk Market is a unique Beijing shopping experience but don’t fall for the fake watches, perfume or pearls. Cheap Drinks While I am sure that you as Agenda readers prefer to sip sophisticated cocktails in refined settings, towards the end of the month your budget may be getting a little thin - but avoid the temptation to go for the dive bars. Without naming names, there are numerous establishments in Sanlintun that serve watered down drinks with alcohol of a dubious origin. If you value your brain cells and eyesight, don’t go for the RMB 10 Tequila shot or RMB 3 draft Tsingtao. Your humble author has learned the hard way how to distinguish bathtub hooch and fraudulent beer foam. Aside from the possibly lethal hangover, patrons of these bars are usually a bit more cantankerous and belligerent.

sell scorpions and other delectables can at least make for memorable photographs. Fengtai District Ignore people saying “Fengtai is the new Dongcheng”. There is nothing going on in Fengtai District. While business may take you there, don’t let it keep you. Scams Despite all the warnings, sometimes even the best of us fall victim to scams. Two of the most pervasive are the tea houses and English learning. The tea house scam usually involves a pair of young women who approach and suggest having tea together. Conveniently enough, these ladies know of a great tea house just around the corner. When the check arrives, outrage ensues when it is discovered that the bill is in the hundreds, or even thousands, of RMB. These girls work for the tea house and receive commission off the duped foreigners. If confronted with this problem, pay only if you feel you are in physical danger, but report the incident to the police and embassy immediately. To avoid the problem completely, do what your humble author does: suggest that you and the ladies instead chat over a couple bottles of Tsingtao and sit on the steps of McDonalds. The other scam involves people who pose as friendly English learners or art students. They too try to lure the unsuspecting to overpriced cafes, teahouses or exhibitions.

Wangfujing This wide pedestrian boulevard is lined with shopping centers as far as the eye can see, but don’t be fooled into thinking that “pedestrian” means “comfortable” as Wangfujing can turn into something of a circus when it fills with shoppers, tourists, and teenagers. The stores are more upscale with fixed prices, and good eateries exist along the way, but the surging crowds usually eradicate any notions of romance or privacy, meaning that Wangfujing is just as indistinguishable from other similar shopping meccas, while the street hawkers are as pushy and offer wares of even lower quality than the Silk Market. For the gastronomically brave, street vendors do

The Performance Pipeline

by Stephen Drotter

The Performance Pipeline is a guide that defines the results required at each level within an organization to sustain business success. Demonstrating that it’s not enough to build a company full of people with leadership skills, Drotter digs into the real work of business results at each leadership layer to illustrate how leaders can make the transition to the next level and achieve full performance. Filled with practical lessons and examples from the author’s extensive working experience across three continents, The Performance Pipeline shows how to set performance standards, make sure the right work is being done at the right time, and how to remove performance barriers. This book gives leaders in any industry an advantage over the competition.

MY PERFECT DAY IN BEIJING

Morgan O’Hara of The Hutong Photo by Mitchell Pe Masilun

My perfect Beijing day would be a blue sky day - clear skies and a nice breeze do wonders for this city and for me. I love my job and my colleagues, and so I would spend the morning at The Hutong: radiant smiles and joyous laughter coming out of our kitchen doors, some freshly picked green tea brewed by Alex Tan, our resident doctor practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine, followed by some earthy Pu’er brewed by Hutong founder Mark Thirlwall, who is also an expert tea connoisseur. It’s time for work, and after immersing myself for a few hours in the tasks at hand, I would join my colleague in The Hutong Kitchen for a delicious homemade lunch break.

As afternoon gives way to dusk, I would find myself at The Orchid Hotel, for a pint of oolong infused brew from Beijing’s own Great Leap Brewing, enjoying the sunset and the lovely view from their rooftop terrace and chatting the dusk away with owners Joel and Youngcall.

Early afternoon I would zip over to Chaoyang Park and meet the Heyrobics team for some sporting, sweating and smiling. There’s little better than seeing Linus shine his white teeth and sharing his Swedish dry humor as he runs circles around you and makes you feel both completely out of shape and good about yourself, at the same time.
