AGENDA

Letter from the editor It’s a keen regret of mine that I haven’t travelled further in China, or indeed in East Asia. While living in Jiangsu, upon first arriving in China, I visited the major cities (Wuxi, Nanjing, Suzhou, and the seaside resort of Liyaanggang) and of course Shanghai, on numerous occasions, but since moving north to Tianjin and then Beijing I haven’t ventured too far. I would dearly like to visit Xinjiang, Xian, Dalian, Sanya and Hong Kong, were I to ever get the chance. And of course it seems that Chinese people have much the same idea, with travel within this continentalcivilization of a nation exploding, and international travel also sharply on the rise. The economic reasons for this are readily apparent, but the lifestyle and cultural implications are fascinating to consider. In a country where until recently few travelled beyond the ritual Spring Festival/National Day mass-migrations, the development of an entirely new leisure industry is not without teething problems. Yet even in its infancy, this industry demonstrates a developing Chinese middle class with disposable income, ready and willing to spend and to pursue their desires. It is precisely this class whose aggregate choices will doubtless largely determine which direction China takes in the 21st century. (Just as was the case with middle-class baby-boomers in post-World War II Europe and North America). One might also point to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: in a nation zooming up the GNP levels, people can spend more time (and money) on their selfrealisation, in things like travel and self-development. Similarly, in a country of such jaw-dropping diversity as China, even the most hardened traveler can only ever feel like he or she has just began to scratch the surface. Consequently, it’s been a great pleasure to hear from the people behind China’s nascent travel and leisure industry. From online travel to walking tours to “wild” China to hoteliers with new approaches to dining to ski resorts, we’ve met some of the most interesting movers and shakers in the business to hear what people in the frontline are doing. It’s an intriguing portrait of where China is, and where it’s going.

A Wild Trip

WildChina’s Nellie Connolly helps you see more of China Text by Jessica Zhang, photo by Judy Zhou

Chinese travel still tends towards the group being led by tour leaders with flags, while major attractions can be disappointing, not so much for themselves as the experience of vast crowds, price gouging and inferior service. WildChina is one company determined to raise the level of tourism in China, showing visitors the real beauty and range of the Middle Kingdom. Nellie Connolly told Agenda how they are doing it.

What are the most popular tourist spots in China? The top tourist spots right now, I would say are, Beijing, Tibet, Guizhou, Xinjiang, and Xi’an or Shanghai. Beijing is still popular and it is my favorite place in China. It is a vivacious city. Tibet is a very special place and I think everyone wants to go visit. Guizhou is so green and has really special festivals. People are looking for different landscapes from where they are from, so places like Xinjiang and Xi’an are very attractive to foreigners, too.

Tell me how you started with WildChina? Why did you want to work for a travel company? I’ve been working for WildChina for nearly three years. When I graduated in 2008, I was enthusiastic about adventuring. I heard about Princeton in Asia, a program offered fellowships for students to work in Asia. So I applied for it and said, “Send me to any place in China”. I got the fellowship and began to teach American history in China Foreign Affairs University for a year. After that, a good friend working here told me that WildChina is fantastic and I should join. During college, I organized several spring break trips and personally I love travelling and hiking a lot, so I thought it would be a great experience for me.

What major difficulties has WildChina met since establishment? The worst moment was during the breakout of SARS in Beijing in 2003, a point that WildChina had to cease operations. It was a tremendously difficult moment, cancellations were pouring in and we didn’t have any contingency plans, because we did not expect SARS to become so serious. It was a huge question mark. But ultimately it was a good thing for us - as our founder Mei said, it was lucky that the challenge came early on the development of WildChina and we learned a lot from it. We grew more confident in our business, because if we can get through that, we can get through anything.

The mission for WildChina is to let their customers “experience China differently”. What do you mean by experiencing China differently? What we mean “differently” is that there are different versions of China and every province is different. We are trying to get our customers to experience authentic China, going to local restaurants, meeting local people and understanding local cultures. We also like to do special things, like setting up a meeting with monks when we take clients to Lhasa. The way we like to travel is to travel comfortably and to see different sides of the culture. We are not specifically trying to promote any image of China, but we are trying to present that destination in an accurate way.

WildChina was selected as one of National Geographic’s 2009 Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth. To what do you attribute this success? First, we are constantly pioneering new trips and not settling on what we have achieved. We never say we are good enough and stop looking for better things. Second, we offer really high quality trips and have a lot of experience dealing with VIP clients. Third, we have many local contacts and our leaders understand international standards. Mei grew up in Yunnan and Albert Ng grew up in Hong Kong. Both went to business school in America and know a lot of people around the world. Also if you don’t understand what your customers want, like that Italians want to drink espresso

at 4pm, you won’t make your clients happy and maintain your business. What has been the impact of the economic crisis on business for WildChina? It’s been pretty minor. We’ve grown each year by double digits, so we’ve been very lucky. There are two major reasons. One is that educational clients, even during economical difficulties, continue to travel. During recession, this is a huge growth area. Another reason is that more and more people are aware of the growing importance of China. Yet the economic crisis does affect people’s hotel choices and their length of stay in China. What are the challenges for the travel industry in China during the next decade, and how is WildChina going to face them? There are two big challenges ahead. The first one is that major tourist sites, for example the Terra Cotta Warriors and the Great Wall, are geared towards the mass market. These places have become very crowded and very commercial. People involved in tourism have to think how to help people have high-quality China experiences. No one likes to go to a crowded place that you are pushed to buy things. The second challenge is easier to solve. Unlike nations like Thailand or Vietnam, China’s economy is not as dependent on tourism. This means that service standards might not be as great as what travelers can get elsewhere. So there should be a greater focus on improving the levels of services and creating customer happiness. What are the future plans for WildChina? We will continue what we are doing, pioneering new trips and developing products with locals, offering great adventures. Nine months ago, we opened our sister company, Bishan, which takes Chinese people outside China under the same travel philosophy, to Antarctica, Peru, Paris. Our final goal is to make our brand famous, so whenever people want to go for travel, we are the first organization they have in mind. Learn more at wildchina.com

TAKE IT EASY

Raffles Hotel Beijing’s Christian Westbeld shakes it up Text by Mike Cormack, photo by Sui

Can you tell us about your background in the hospitality industry? I started as a pageboy and housekeeper in Frankfurt in 1994, serving an apprenticeship. After some studying to help advance my career, I joined Peninsula Hotel in Manila for three years, then moved to Dubai in 2006 as the Food and Beverage (F&B) Banquet Manager for Fairmont. I was always aiming for the top hotels, so when I heard of an opening in Raffles Dubai as assistant director for F&B, I went there. I then moved to the Singapore Raffles in 2009, which is where I learned the most under two fantastic managers. I joined Raffles Hotel Beijing in 2011, and shortly after became the Resident Manager. What challenges does the industry face in Beijing? How are you seeking to overcome them? The main challenge is staff turnover. For most people here, their main motivation is money rather than self-development or career goals. I’d experienced this in Dubai and Singapore, but people stay in posts in Beijing for even shorter times. So we really handpick people here, to make sure they see their career in the hotel industry and that they want to progress. Also I try to ensure people don’t get overpromoted beyond their capacity when others leave, because that equally causes problems. Second, convincing people that the changes we propose are right. It’s always harder to start something, but when you put your blood and sweat into creating, it’s ultimately more rewarding.

the List Summer greetings, dear reader! It’s the perfect moment to take a weekend trip to one of the numerous travel destinations outside of Beijing because living here, like everything else, needs recharging with variety and change. Surrounding the capital are numerous places to soak up some sun, hike, shop, eat, explore, and relax. Agenda takes a quick look at some of these great destinations just a stone’s throw, or short flight, from Beijing.

Dalian 大连 The City by the Sea as it’s known to Chinese, Dalian has seen substantial development over the past few years, and it now has quite the international mix, including a large Japanese population. Thanks to a widespread environmental campaign called “Green Storm”, the city now boasts many seaside scenic spots, wooded parks, and plazas. For beach lovers, Dalian has several sandy spots, including Tiger Beach (Laohutan) and Golden Pebble Beach (Jinshitan). Many of these scenic areas require a ticket, so be prepared. For history buffs, there are a handful of museums and historical sites that catalog the British, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese struggle to make Dalian a strategic seaport, as well as Russian-built French-influenced architecture to remind tourists of former occupation and colonisation. ing local and international talent. Outside the city, there are great spots for overnight hiking trips including Tianmen Mountain, Phoenix Mountain, and Hushan. Tianjin 天津 Just a half -hour bullet train raid away, Tianjin boasts several attractions that the capital can’t match. For starters, there is the Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park situated on the outskirts of Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA). The decommissioned aircraft carrier is a floating museum housing war memorabilia and is a great chance for the young and old to experience these mammoth war machines. There are many good restaurants and bars in TEDA (including several Irish bars) and it’s worth a visit to check out the glittering boulevards and new buildings. Downtown Tianjin is also home to good shopping opportunities; check out Binjiang Dao to bargain hunt or peruse

the more upscale shopping centers. Fantastic eateries abound in case binge shopping leaves you fatigued. Tianjin Water Park, composed of three lakes and nine islands, is the top tourist destination and offers row boats trips perfect for lackadaisical afternoons to soak up some sun and local beauty. Atop the 415 meter tall Tianjin TV Tower is a restaurant that can serve up to 200 patrons and provides a great panoramic view of the city. Qingdao 青岛 Beginning in 1991 and held in the second week of every August, the Qingdao Beer Festival attracts legions of thirsty beer drinkers. Aside from the 16-day festivities, intrepid surfers willing to brave the monsoon season swells (June-October) will find some of the best surfing conditions in China. Qingdao hosts numerous international sailing events and is a great place for those who desire a taste of life on the sea. For more prosaic entertainment, check out the Eight Great Phases (Badaguan) area to view German colonial fortifications and Japanese architecture. A heavy expat population has brought with it a thriving nightlife with many top-of-the-line clubs and pubs. Q-Bar located in the ShangriLa Hotel is a safe bet but there are many avant-garde locals as well. For live music, head over to sHooters (Owl Bar) next to the Olympic Sailing Museum on the pier. Seafood is plentiful and found in many local dishes.

and tranquility are quite therapeutic for those of us who live in Beijing. Hexigten National Geopark is a UNESCO designated park containing eight scenic areas including thermal springs and a granite forest with eerie but intriguing rock formations. Hohhot, the capital, has several must-see attractions including Dazhao Temple and Xiaozhao Temple, built in 1580 and 1697 respectively. The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan in Ordos City is a cenotaph and this shrine hosts many important rituals and ceremonies for the Mongolian people. Xingcheng 兴城 Skip the overcrowded and touristy Beidaihe and head just a short car ride away to Xingcheng. Xingcheng is a well kept beachside secret for those wanting to beat the Beijing heat and have a more reclusive vacation. Located in Liaoning Province, this ancient city has natural hot springs, beaches for lounging the day away and a number of spa resorts. It is also one of only four well-preserved Ming dynasty cities in China, complete with city walls, four gate-towers, and a drum and bell tower. To the north of the city is Shoushan Mountain, a national park with lush forests and inspiring scenery. Be sure to take a boat to Chrysanthemum Island, the largest island in the Bohai Gulf, to really appreciate all that Xingcheng has to offer.

Inner Mongolia 内蒙古 If you are seeking somewhere wildly different to Beijing, Inner Mongolia is the place to go. Travel by horse back and explore the vast grasslands in the provinces eastern area. Camp out in a yurt, the traditional Mongolian tent, and sip on some milk tea to enjoy the indigenous beverage. Spiced lamb is a common dish, as well as Mongolian style hot pot. Some of the more worthwhile grasslands include Bashang, Baotou, Erenhot, Ulanhot or Hailar Grasslands, which offer great views of Inner Mongolia’s natural beauty – their peace

Golf Some say that playing golf with someone is the best way to know whether your business with them will work out for the best. The little things that may not seem to matter take a big toll on the golf course, and it’s always better to know now than when there are millions at stake. In The Context

Context Travel’s Paul Bennet on their Sino-seminars Text by Rachel Chen, photo by courtesy of Context Travel

Can you tell us about your background? I was an English major in college, and then I did a Masters in Intellectual History at St. John’s, Oxford. For many years I worked as a journalist, writing mostly about architecture and landscape. I wrote five books about gardens, garden history, and landscape design, before turning my attention to tourism. In 2003, I founded Context Travel with my wife, Lani Bevacqua, who is a graphic designer. With the National Geographic and National Geographic Adventure, you were an awardwinning writer before founding Context - how was that? National Geographic is a fantastic organization. Unfortunately, Adventure magazine folded a couple of years ago, but during its day (late 1990s-late 2000s), it was regarded as one of the premier publications for adventure travel. I worked for the magazine as a freelance writer for

nearly ten years, including several cover stories. My article about sailing across the Atlantic in a small boat won the Lowell Thomas award for travel writing. The main National Geographic magazine - what we call the “Yellow Book” - is a place unto itself, and a thrilling place to work. When I did my first assignment for it, I received a little blue notebook for expenses in the mail, and it looked like something out of the 19th century. I still remember that one category was “bribes for locals.” What made you come to Beijing with your own business? We expanded Context to Beijing this year based largely on client demand. Our existing customer base told us that they would find our scholar-led walking tours useful for exploring and understanding the city. Plus, Beijing is a major cultural capital and fits nicely alongside the other cities in our repertoire, which include

New York, London, Paris, and seventeen other cities. We just had to be here.

“Any business that’s customer-facing requires the ability to communicate, most often in writing. You have to be able to tell a story about your product and service that is convincing, exciting, and inspiring”

What are Context’s killer apps, as it were? Context is unique. Unlike traditional tour companies, we don’t organize multi-day packages, or even organize hotels or airfare. Most people can handle these things themselves better than a tour operator can, thanks to the internet. Our focus is on the cultural component once you arrive. We call our tours “walking seminars,” and they introduce a very different model of travel. First of all, our groups are limited to no more than six people. Second, they are led by a real expert. Typically, the “docent” who leads the walk is a PhD-level scholar from a local university who understands the material very deeply, and who is a consummate teacher. So, along with the small group size, these walks are geared toward culturally curious people who really want to discover and to understand the cities they are visiting. What has been your best experience in starting up Context? Good question - there are many. I regularly attend our walks all over the world, and many of these rank up there. I’m actually not a tour person - I hate tours. But I love our walking seminars. I’m a completely history and culture geek. I’m the guy with his mouth hanging open as the sinologist explains dynastic succession in the Forbidden City. One of my best experiences was actually leading a walk, many years ago, in Rome, where I lived for many years. It was an architectural walk, which is my specialty, taking place at night, and we passed by the Pantheon about 20 minutes into a three-hour walk. I gave a short lecture about the Pantheon and its design and how later architects have theorized that it’s the “most perfect building in the world.” My group was transfixed by this idea and began asking about the golden mean, Vitruvius, and architectural theory. After a short while, one of the groups

noticed an attractive cafe serving wine on the piazza and suggested we sit down. We ended up ordering a bottle of Chianti, then another, and talking about a wide range of architectural, historical, and social topics. We ended up spending the entire tour right there, in front of the Pantheon, drinking wonderful Italian wine, and learning a lot about art and culture. What’s the biggest difference in being a writer and a businessman? Which one do you prefer? I see a direct connection between the two. Any business that’s customer-facing requires the ability to communicate, most often in writing. You have to be able to tell a story about your product and service that is convincing, exciting, and inspiring. It’s the same in journalism. You can have the most wonderful idea or topic in the world and kill it with bad writing. Which do I like better? Business. It’s more varied and better rounded. At the end of the day, in writing, you’re doing the same thing over and over, and it can become procedural. There’s a certain joy in honing that procedure and becoming a better writer. But, in business, there are always surprises. You always encounter something that you haven’t seen before, which is challenging but also refreshing. What are your goals for Context Travel? We are currently growing Context. Last year’s sales grew 65% and landed us on Inc Magazine’s list of the fastest growing companies. This year we’ve expanded to three new cities (Beijing, Shanghai, and Prague) so far, and will roll out two more (Vienna and Budapest) in June. We plan to be in 25 cities by the end of next year. Our goal is to be the go-to company for cultural tourism.

Time to Go Travel

Kingdom Travel’s Ice Huang Text by Jessica Zhang, photo by Sui

Travel is a fashion. Globalization has brought people all over the world closer and entices us to go out and explore more. Yet the question remains: how can you depart from your home comforts yet still travel in comfort and style? Kingdom Travel Services is well known for their high-end individual and business tours. Agenda invited their Ice Huang to share her ideas on travel with Ag e n d a readers.

How long has Kingdom Travel been working in China? Do you have any plans to expand beyond Beijing and Shanghai? We started in 2001 and have been steadily growing over the years. In 2005, we were officially appointed as the wholesaler of Thai Royal Orchid Holiday (Thai’s Airways’ unique holiday brand). Other than that, we have built good relations with the local community and the international market, which plays a pivotal role in our prospering business. We only have offices in Beijing and Shanghai now, but we definitely have plans to expand to other cities in the next few years, such as Guangzhou and Tianjin. Who are Kingdom Travel’s target customers? Most of our customers are local expats and foreign business travelers, so basically you could say “foreigners”. We have a clear vision of who our customers are, so we can offer them the best personalized services based on their individual needs. Do you offer trips all over the world, or in particular areas? We help our customers travel all over the world, but the trend shows that South East Asia has grown to be some of the most popular tourist destinations. Countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam are very attractive internationally these days. What makes Kingdom Travel different in the market? Do you have any unique travel programs? Tiziano Peccenini, Wall Street International Institute founder Interview by Rachel Chen, photo courtesy of Wall Street International Institute

Can you tell us about your background? I was born in a really small city in the north of Italy. My life was tough at the beginning, but that just made me stronger. I got my university degree studying on the weekends at the age of 33. At 19, I started to work and the longest time I stayed in one job was a year and a half, because I wanted to be happy. I left a very well paid job at the age of 24. It was very respectable but I was getting bored. Can you tell us about Wall Street Institute? Why do you think it was so successful? In September 1972, I set up the company that was destined to be my life’s work: Wall Street Institute. We created a student- rather than teacher-centered approach, whereby lessons follow a flexible timetable and study is both self-directed and teacher-assisted, offering a new way of learning that was self-paced and,

Often serving as the means for people to first come to China, these schools are enormously popular with locals determined to gain English fluency and advance their opportunities. I started my first business when I was 25 with a partner who was 35, but it failed. People think failures are bad, but in fact it was good because I learned from it. My partner and I each had one department and mine was fine after one year but his had a big loss. So my lesson was that you have to choose the right partner and that good partners are rare. Spotlight With a mountainous backdrop to the north, Beijing should be blessed with good skiing resorts. While there are existing opportunities, there’s nothing quite to match the world-class possibilities and leisure facilities of an Aspen, Whistler or Zermatt. But as you might expect, the industry here is rising rapidly, and Yulongwang Ski and Holiday Village (open in December) promises to be one of the premier winter and outdoor resorts in the Bohai area. Dai Liangchao told Agenda all about it.

The Next Resort

Beijing skiing on the rise

Text by Mike Cormack, translation by Rachel Chen, photo courtesy of Yulongwang Ski & Holidays Village

What was the inspiration for Yulongwen? How did you come to work there? When it comes to skiing, Chinese people are not only looking for high quality pistes, but also for perfect facilities that should accompany them. The quality and the variety of entertainment they can get from a ski trip are becoming more important. Directed by Mr Song Jingbing from 7su.com, I became one of the planners of Yulongwan Ski & Holidays Village. What will the full facilities of Yulongwan be? What will set it apart from its numerous competitors? Phase 1 for Yulongwan Ski & Holidays Village has two snow ground and twelve snow tunnels, and once completed, Phase 2 will be the biggest ski resort in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan delta. There will be a food centre, hot spring centre, Leku Apartment, wooden house villa and so on, and we’ll even have business streets with

shopping outlets. The difference between us and others is the degree to which we value travelers’ feelings and feedback. For instance, we have four coffee shops along the snow tunnels so that travelers can enjoy coffee breaks and sunshine whenever they want. Moreover, we have decorated the apartments in nine various styles to satisfy travelers with different tastes. Were there any existing resorts or destinations which inspired you? Yes. I had experience in constructing and operating several ski resorts and did research in many ski resorts in Europe as well. I gained valuable experience from the experts in the skiiing industry, which I hope will show. Are you working with partners from outside China? What are they bringing? Of course! We not only work with partners from overseas but they also bring us new tech-

nologies, philosophies and ski culture. For example, we are going to work with the tourism organization in Italy to have an “Italian ice festival” in order to show Chinese ski lovers more about Italian culture.

“Chinese people are not only looking for high quality pistes, but also for perfect facilities that should accompany them. The quality and the variety of entertainment they can get from a ski trip are becoming more important”

The Chinese ski and winter sports sector lags behind that of Europe and North America. What does it need to be world class? There should be more Chinese participating in skiing, especially young people. Skiing as a sport is still at its infancy in China. Not only the equipment condition, but also the managerial and sales operations need to be improved and we have realized this. Even though there’s still a long way to go, I believe that the leaders in the ski industry in China will find their way for development. What kind of demand are you expecting once the resort opens? How many visitors per month, for example? First, I hope that we can provide a comfortable and safe consumption environment and excellent service to every customer. I don’t think it’s a case of “the more the better” in terms of operations here. We will have restrictions on capacity during rush season in order to guarantee that every customer has a great ski experience here.

everyone? Now we’re seeing increasing numbers of younger people going for winter sports. The ski community near Beijing has been developing for ten years. Ski lovers do not give up their hobby because they’re getting older, and as they have children, their decendents also join this growing community. Do you expect international visitors or is Yulongwan seen as primarily for people resident in China? We define Yulongwan ski resort as a ski holiday town. We would love to have more people come here to experience and then tell others. Of course Beijing, Tianjin, Tangshan, and the economic circle along Bohai are our main market, but there’s no reason to exclude anyone else.

What marketing strategies will you pursue? In winter, we will focus on skiing; while in summer, we’ll provide sports lovers with hiking, biking, surfing etc. For leisure lovers, we have hot springs, lavender garden, and camping activities. In general, this is a good place for How would you describe travel and leisure elder people to rest and a great place for kids in China as a whole? But the industry here is not as Our ultimate goal is to get more people involved well as established as in the west. This is not only in ski and to love skiing as a sport. We want to a problem of investment but also a problem of make more people engage in outdoor activities operating philosophy. book review

Read this Book

The Coming Jobs War by Jim Clifton This title offers definitive leadership strategy to fixing the American economy, written by Gallup’s chairman and drawing upon the company’s unmatched global polling, explaining why jobs are the new global currency for leaders. More than peace or money or any other good, the business, government, military, city, and village leaders who can create good jobs will own the future. The problem, Clifton suggests, is that leaders don’t know how to create jobs - especially in America. What they should do is recognize that the world is in a war for jobs. Society needs to realize that entrepreneurs, not government, are the source of new jobs and put all its energy behind them; and leaders need to recognize universities, mentors, and especially cities as a supercollider for job creation. If that can be done, new good jobs will result. There’s not moment to waste: the war has already begun.

My Perfect Day in Beijing

Troy Reilly (aka Jorge Arrowsmith), lead guitarist of The Beijing Beatles Photo courtesy of Troy Reilly

On a perfect June weekend in the high 20s, a slight breeze and blue skies, I cycle 20 minutes to The Den for a brunch of either Eggs Benedict, Vegetarian Pizza with a dash of tobasco sauce or the grilled cheese and ham sandwich, all washed down with a Bloody Mary or two (or three). I borrow a headset from the lovely Lisa and tune into the Asia Pacific Network to watch my beloved Richmond Tigers compete in the Australian Football League - and of course win convincingly!Â

40

AGENDA

Following on from this, I call my Aussie mates for a leisurely stroll around Ritan Park at a walking rate of 15 minutes per lap, or perhaps run at the gym, now that my knee has recovered from when I fell off my Flying Pigeon in an underground tunnel on the Second Ring Road (that obviously was not the perfect day!). After that, I continue to cycle over to the bell tower street of Gulou and check out two of the best guitar shops in town for supplies, where I can be rest assured anything I buy will not be counterfeit: Fuda and Seven Music. Given I am now in the same area, I may or may not head in the direction of Nanluoguxiang to Salud to have a drink and snack on some frogs legs with Nico the French owner. Now that the hours of daylight are coming to an abrupt end, and just before the crowds of dinner time traffic start to build around Ghost Street and Sanlitun, I may also need to very efficiently drop by the costume shop on the 4th floor of Yashow Market to buy myself a spare wig for the evening’s performance! Nightfall is just around the corner, so I would perform with the Beijing Beatles at one of three of my favorite live music venues in the city: The Temple tucked away in the courtyard of Gulou 206 has plenty of likeable attributes. First, there is French owner/manager Clements Berger and his gang - Clements reminds me of Sonic the Hedgehog (one of my favorite gaming characters of all time); heavy metal rocker Cedric does a great job on the sound mix for us; and “Pink” would have to be the sexiest and friendliest bar tender in all of Beijing! Rather than luring punters with flashy drinks or brash design, the VA bar is also a good choice for us thanks to Qi Bin and his stage’s sound quality. Liu Miao also runs a fine show out at Dos Kolegas near the Drive Inn Theatre. After rocking out through a diverse catalogue of Beatles tunes in sweaty Sgt. Pepper costumes and wigs, I find it difficult to sleep and need time to unwind from all the action and excitement. It is now 2am and the nightlife options are limited. Considered by many late-night eaters to be hot dog heaven, I may drop by the infamous Maggies and check out

their fantastic resident band (lead songstress Jennifer’s Adele covers are extraordinary) and of course enjoy some great people watching opportunities. Finally I ride my bicycle back home as I dodge effortlessly and peacefully in and out of the hutongs in the early hours of the morning (no traffic!), and stop by for a cup of doujiang and baozis. It is now sunrise and time to hit the sack! The Den Bar and Restaurant 4 Gongti Donglu (next to City Hotel’s main entrance), Chaoyang District (6592 6290)敦煌, 朝阳区工体东路4号 城市宾馆正门旁边
