The judging panel will be led by Síle Seoige.

An Sean Dún Community in Clare are the first Calor Sustainable Community Champions! Following several weeks of fevered voting across the island, we announced the An Sean Dún Community in Ennis, Co. Clare as the unanimous choice for the Calor Sustainable Community Champion 2014! The green minded group topped the public poll with over 1,400 votes and were the clear winners for the judging panel led by TV and radio personality, Síle Seoige and legendary GAA and sports broadcaster, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. As the overall champion, the group was awarded €7,500 to give to a charity or organisation of their choice plus €1,500 for their community! Selecting a runner up to receive €500 was a tough job for judges and led to a tie between Glenamaddy Community Development Company from Galway, and the Lower Malone Residents’ Association from Antrim both winning €500 each. The 2014 winner, An Sean Dún Community, confirmed that it is awarding its prize bursary of €7,500 to 18 Primary and Secondary Schools around Ennis. To date, this outstanding estate has been placing eco-friendly and sustainability at the centre of how they live for the last number of years. Members of the community developed a digital “Household Guide to

Sustainable Living” which contained over 130 practical steps on how to reduce water, energy and waste and was made available through their website, www.anseandun.com. The initiative received a hugely positive response from the wider community, and lead to the development of household sustainability packs, which contained water, waste and energy saving devices which saw the estate conserve over half a million litres of water and 29,000 kWhrs of saved energy per year! The group will use their prize money to help deliver similar sustainable projects to schools and to drive educational awareness programmes. Cormac McCarthy and Peter Brigdale, An Sean Dún Green Community said, “It is hugely humbling and an honour for us to be named as the first Sustainable Community Champion. We are honestly still in shock! Each and every one of the finalists and nominees is a winner for their communities; it has given us a sense of immense pride to be mentioned with this worthy and selfless group of people. For us, education is core to promoting and fostering sustainable living. We will be dividing the bursary amongst the primary and secondary schools around Ennis to support the delivery of our message of sustainable living at home and at school.”

Safety first It is very important to have your boiler serviced and inspected annually. Some properties have been built with appliance flue systems which cannot be inspected because they are hidden behind walls or ceilings. This makes it difficult to identify any safety concerns with the flue system and could be dangerous. When you are getting your boiler serviced, your registered installer needs to be able to see the flue system as part of essential safety checks whenever the appliance is worked on. A flue system in poor condition, combined with an appliance that is not working properly,

could put you and your family in danger from carbon monoxide poisoning, which can cause death or serious injury. Northern Ireland: In Northern Ireland from 1 January 2013, any Gas Safe registered engineer will turn the boiler off, with your permission and formally advise you not to use it until inspection hatches have been fitted in appropriate places. Further information can be obtained at http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/advice/ flues_in_voids.aspx

Time to Upgrade Your Boiler? UPGRADE YOUR BOILER WITH CALOR – SAVE €300/£250! At Calor, we recommend that you have your LPG boiler, pipework and appliances inspected and serviced at least once a year in order to keep them safe and running efficiently. This is especially important for any LPG installation carried out prior to 2001 which involves buried pipework. If your boiler is over 10 years old it may be coming to the end of its efficient life. If so, having a new, high efficiency boiler installed is your best way to continue enjoying the great value that comes with using Calor Gas. Upgrading to a higher efficiency boiler not only saves you CO2 emissions, we’ll give you €300/£250 on your Calor account!

Upgrade to a higher efficiency boiler and get €300/£250 on your Calor account To apply, contact us on 1850 812 450 (ROI) or 028 9045 5588 (NI) or email info@calorgas.ie

Gas Safety Carbon Monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. It can be released by appliances as part of the combustion of all carbon fuels (oil/gas/solid fuel/wood) if they are not properly installed or maintained. Anything that burns with a flame can potentially emit carbon monoxide. Here are some important points to remember about Carbon Monoxide: Remember the causes Carbon Monoxide can be produced when ANY fuel is burnt, including oil, gas, wood and coal, if the appliance is not properly installed or maintained.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) has: No smell No colour No taste Remember to service

To prevent Carbon Monoxide, ensure your appliances are installed and serviced annually by a Registered Gas Installer, a Registered Oil Technician, or a qualified service agent for your fuel type. Also make sure vents, flues and chimneys are kept clear. Remember the alarm Carbon Monoxide is odourless and colourless so for added protection install an audible carbon monoxide alarm. Make sure the alarm complies with EN 50291, carries a CE mark, has an end of life indicator and carries an independent certification mark.

More information is available on www.carbonmonoxide.ie www.watchout.hseni.gov.uk

Calor sell carbon monoxide alarms on our webshop, you can find them at shop.calorgas.ie

Sustainability and Energy Savings Tips During winter, close windows and blinds as soon as the sun goes down. Temperatures drop much faster during this time and this will help to reduce heat loss. Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) use a fraction of the electricity an ordinary light bulb would use and should last up to 10 times longer. Be demanding when you buy. All appliances now need an energy label so check them for one. Purchase ‘A’ rated appliances whenever possible, the amount they will save you on electricity will be more than the cost of replacing the existing appliances you have. Avoid being plugged in. Unplug Mobile phones and laptops once they are charged, along with the battery chargers or power adapters.

Switch appliances off rather than leaving them on standby. This will save up to 20% of their energy use. Many people set their thermostat too high. Check it and if it’s above 20°C turn it down. Lowering your thermostat by just 1°C could knock 10% off your heating bill. Close room doors to separate heated from unheated areas of your home, and minimise the space you are heating. You don’t need to heat empty rooms in your home. Make better use of the timers on your immersion or boiler so you can control when the heating comes on and off. This means you have heating and hot water when and where you want it. Source: www.seai.ie
