London is calling again

The inaugural edition of the fair in 2013, attracted 25,000 visitors, including 4,500 VIPs. Olympia Grand Hall will once again host Art14 with its ‘refreshingly different‘ approach in London between Friday 28 February and Sunday 2 March 2014, with the Private View and First Night taking place on Thursday 27 February. Art14 London is set to build on the strong foundations laid down by the 2013 fair, and will provide a platform for some of the world’s best modern and contemporary art as Stephanie Dickvoss the director of the fair highlighted. AGE: The first edition of the fair, Art13 was organised because you felt demand for a new art fair both from galleries and from collectors. Has Art13 fulfilled your expectations?
Stephanie Dieckvoss: Art13 exceeded our expectations both in audience figures (general visitors and collectors) as well as the success that galleries had with regard to sales and making connections to other galleries, curators and critics. Private, corporate and institutional collectors bought from the fair across the whole spectrum of what was offered, i.e. all age groups of artists and all price levels. The follow-up press and general feedback was unanimously positive and we are strongly motivated to prepare an even better and more exciting Art14. AGE: The fair was organized to be accessible both in terms of presentation and in terms of prices, and you wanted to create an atmosphere that is welcoming from the novice to the seasoned collectors. What audience did you cater for last year? Stephanie Dieckvoss: We try to cater for different audiences. For an art fair you do need the established and big collectors who can bring their experience to an art fair and might be interested in substantial works and help build the reputation of a fair. We were able to cater to these collectors partly through the Global Private Museum Summit as well as the VIP Programme. Then the smaller scale collectors are very important as they are the “bread and butter” for a gallery and often become the most loyal collectors and followers of an artist – in my mind they are not to be underestimated, even if their funds are limited at some point. We had quite a lot to offer for these collectors I think and they came from the UK and Europe mainly. Then we know as a fact that a lot of new buyers came to the fair, who bought their first art works here. Those buyers also fall into at least two categories, young professionals, who might be interested in the lower priced works, as well as new buyers from the so called “emerging” art markets where money is not necessarily an issue. But they might feel less welcome in more established fairs – we hope that Art13 was a place where they felt welcome and will feel welcome again this year! AGE: Art13 as one of the first art fairs of the year acts as a blank canvas that reflects the dialogue between east and west. With galleries from so many different countries exhibiting with you, have you been able to spot any trends in international art? www.artguideeast.org
Installation View © Theo Cohen Photos Stephanie Dieckvoss: I think photography never ceases to be a trend, but to me it feels it has truly become more global recently: encompassing faces, landscapes and urban scenes from across the world, featuring social ruptures in often critical but also funny and artistically progressive ways. We have amazing works by photographers from India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, Russia, Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia, the Gulf States, and Europe that are astonishing. The other trend that Kalman Maklary spearheaded last year is the idea of the rediscovery of earlier post war art that is becoming more and more an international trend. At the fair this can be seen by relatively rare London street photography from the 1970s to Joseph Beuys prints, as well as important Modern Arab and Indian Art. Polish artist Marek Piasecki [1935-2011], with his amazing works from the 50s and 60s, shown by Mummery and Schnelle, is shown as is of course Judit Reigl, the Russian non-conformist artist, Vladimir Yankilevsky (b. 1938) at Aktis Gallery, or the late Uzbek artists Audrey Krikis at Alif Gallery, Baku. AGE: At your first show you presented numerous art projects, will you continue it this year as well?
Stephanie Dieckvoss: We love the Projects! After Art13 we promised ourselves to have less projects this year but I think we will end up with a similar number of around 20 again! The hall invites interventions and we amended the floor plan to create more “gaps” for the sculptures so we do get carried away by the wonderful proposals galleries are coming up with and which we sometimes can lure out of them as well. But we know the hall better this year and know what works in what kind of space so I am sure the results will be eye catching and engaging again. I love the idea that the projects are interspersed at unexpected corners and places and then engage viewers in new ways. In this regard we are very much looking forward to Lithuanian TADAS VOSYLIUS’s project at Art14. Some projects are also more performative than last year and link very well with our successful Performance Programme which we also continue this year. We are delighted that the Zabludowicz Collection has become our Performance Partner this year. AGE: At the time of Art14 an invitation-only conference called Global Private Museum Summit will be organised again. Could you give us more insights?

Stephanie Dieckvoss: The Global Private Museum Summit was an enormous success last year so we are delighted to be staging this for a second year. The closed-door session will bring together contemporary art museum owners and offer them an opportunity to set up a network that will share exhibitions, expertise and funding strategies. The summit reflects the need for an art world with an international outlook and allows private museum owners to share their knowledge and expertise with a view to driving change world-wide. A public talk called ‘Museum Era: The Rise of Asia’ will take place at the Fair on Friday 28 February 2014, 4pm, featuring participants from the Global Private Museum Summit including: Dr Oei Hong Djien (Indonesia), Owner of OHD Museum in Java, a private museum that specialises in modern and contemporary Indonesian art Wang Wei (China), Established the Long Museum in Shanghai in 2012, showcasing classical, modern and contemporary Chinese art. She is opening a second museum in March 2014 Budi Tek (China/Indonesia), The Yuz Museum in Shanghai has just opened, showcasing art from around the world
Sunhee Kim (Korea), Director of the Daegu Art Museum and former senior curator of Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum AGE: Parallel the fair you are going to launch the Art&City program, could you tell us more about it? Stephanie Dieckvoss: This is a programme of events, some private, some public, looking at the ways in which art now has the power to change cities in a social and economic way. There are three main areas that the programme will be broken down in to: A Private Colloquium will bring together private museum owners, property developers, boutique hotel owners, CEO’s of Luxury Brands, curators and collectors who will all discuss how to work together in the future to keep art at the forefront of urban growth and regeneration. A public talk will follow the Colloquium on Saturday 1 March at 2.30pm and will feature Kate Rothko, the daughter of the late American-Abstract painter Mark Rothko. She is a major doner to the Mark Rothko Center in Dugavpils in Latvia. The gallery has significantly increased tourism in the city.‘Open Art’ will provide members of public in London access to existing private collections and encourage people to interact with art in the capital outside of the gallery environment.

What’s on: Vojin Bakić Sculpture – The First Retrospective “Lightbearing Forms“ This exhibition of Vojin Bakić’s sculptures, organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art, is the first full retrospective of its kind to be held, anywhere. Elliott Erwitt is one of the best-known photographers in the world. His works are widely considered masterpieces. Predominantly black-and-white, they portray prominent figures and absurd situations from everyday life. The predominant characteristic of his work is subtle humour, which features particularly in his socially concerned photographs from various corners of the world. Until February 2014 hundreds of clay statuettes accompanied by paintings, photographs and texts by German artist Volker März will occupy three floors of the Tower at DOX . The name of the exhibition, Laughing Windows, applies to personalities who for März became important windows, allowing us to look at the world from new perspectives while also referring to the humour and irony that are such an important part of the artist’s work. März “lovingly” takes major historical figures such as Franz Kafka, Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt or Friedrich Nietzsche down from their pedestal and identifies them directly with their biographies, thus disrupting our notions of the cult of genius. The exhibition’s central theme is childhood, which through the “windows” of the stories of these giants the artist depicts as a blessed state not yet afflicted by any social strategies. His task is not only to reconstruct the memories of the 1977 journey, but also to take a close look at the rules of the art world game, a game organizing the existence of artists. What’s on: Literary Visions. Tibor Csernus’s Book Illustrations in Paris (1965–1980) With an oeuvre that spans fifty years, Tibor Csernus is a key figure not only of Hungarian art but of the international history of painting as well. This exhibit highlights a lesser known part of his painterly oeuvre, presenting the first comprehensive overview in Hungary of his book illustrations. We concentrate on the Paris years, when he produced cover designs and illustrations for a wide range of themes, from belles-lettres through crime fiction and fantasy to sci-fi. This kind of applied graphics earned him more than a livelihood: the years of cooperation with such prestigious publishers as the famous Gallimard also brought him professional recognition. What lends the material presented in Tihany now a particular interest and value is that in addition to the small oil or ink paintings and prints that bear testimony to Csernus’s vivid imagination and visionary powers, those experiments and discoveries are also on view that were to fuel the development of his distinct figurative style. The exhibition was realized in the spring of 2013 through the cooperation of three French and one German institutions (Centre Pompidou, Metz; Champs Libres, Rennes; Fresnoy, Tourcoing; ZKM, Karlsruhe); and is to be presented in Budapest with several thematic programs, adapted to the actual venue. 34

Selection from the Ludwig Museum’s Collection The new permanent exhibition of Ludwig Museum presents about 80 pieces of the collection of more than 500 artworks. In addition to displaying the most well-known artworks, the exhibition focuses on a fundamental characteristic of the collection, the dialogue between “East” and “West”, with a special accent to the period before the regime change (1960’s–80’s). While avian encounters in the public sphere are still layered with stratum of ideology, mythology and national identity, this exhibition asks whether there is today an additional dimension to the avian imaginary, namely that of endangeredness and a shared ecological predicament. There’s no problem in satisfying our deadened desire for pleasure because our affectations and the need for attention have become a public confession – but there’s no guarantee of a pardon. Hidden behind dark curtains and the many doors of the cabinet , the exhibition slumbers in the archives of contemporary folklore and the person’s search for identity – the poetry of the former parliament speaker turned prisoner, a sad sweet meeting of some sect on a Sunday afternoon and the colourful fantasies in personal ads. The purposefully selected stories form structures where theory meets practice. The eternal search for ideals, striving for consciousness of a higher power and the desire to be loved are confronted by despair, one-night stands and leaders of superstition. The LNMA is working together with national museums in Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia, and the exhibition will be made up of artworks created by artists who were eyewitnesses to World War I; most of them are widely recognised as masters in the area of Modernism. One part of exhibition includes a contemporary commentary and reflection about history and war from the perspective of present-day individuals. 40

Selected Works 1972–91. Show contains artist’s paintings – a personal record of the epic of Poland’s contemporary history of the 70s and 80s, but also of the early 90s. Most of the canvases are from the series Sportsmen. The first part of the series includes more than hundred paintings created until 1978 in specific, juicy colours and in comic-like aesthetics. These paintings are
mostly dedicated to everyday life of simple people. The other part was created from 1981 and is completely different; painted impasto with aggressive, wide gesture in dark, dirty shades. It shows the same heroes – sportsmen but in a new political situation – after the implementation of martial law in 1981. These paintings not only comments on the Polish society but on politics. What’s on: Romul Nuţiu, Cristian Sida: Multiverse. The title of the exhibition, Multiverse, is inspired by a theory/hypothesis, developed by William James, American physician, philosopher and psychologist in the end of the 19th century (1895) and it refers to the possibility of simultaneous existence of an infinite number of parallel universes, including our own. The exhibition is built on the idea of information exchange between two distinctive personalities, seen as two complex, parallel universes. Although their relation started in the school studio, as teachings and transfer of ideas and practices from professor to student, later on, the progresses of the talented artist Cristian Sida guided him directly to Timișoara art scene and his role of a student became that of a colleague. (Budapest, Hungary) and Năsui Gallery (Bucharest, Romania) in order to link the different contemporary artistic scenes within Central and Eastern Europe along a definite topic. The project started as a private initiative in the form of presenting first three Hungarian and four Romanian artists reflects a specific artistic tendency in the region focusing on the different layers of strongly actual and timeless reality. The exhibition was first shown during autumn 2012 in Budapest and is to be next presented – completed with fresh works – in the Brukenthal Museum, Sibiu (RO) from November 8, 2013 until January 8, 2014. The conception of the exhibition offers the opportunity for various approaches of reality to deploy through different material, each approach become a visual formulation of essential problematics. What’s on: Pavel Polyansky: One Day In Paradise “One Day In Paradise” is Polyansky’s first solo exhibition at Fine Art, he has participated in group exhibitions of the Gallery before. Pavel Polyansky was born in Moscow in 1980, graduated from The Surikov Art Institute in 2004, did an internship in Germany in 2002 (The State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe). It is rather difficult to identify Polyansky as an artist, it is easier to summarize: there is a certain amount of works at the exhibition, acrylic on canvas, years, size etc. His canvases are painted in a grey color with a different tone depth, sometimes uniform «gray» is disturbed with lighter forms, such as clouds, fancifully filling the sky. It is “sat” on a chair in a white empty space, connected to a device (Arduino) for translating computer code into mechanical operation. Arduino feeds the code into two rotary engines, which are fixed to the upper left and right corners of an easel. A toothed belt is affixed to the engines’ bearings; tooth by tooth, it guides the movement of the drawing pen over the painting surface. The laptop draws its vision of itself and simultaneously calculates, adjusts and transmits its vision. During the exhibition, the laptop is going to produce one portrait, or croquis, per day. These portraits are going to be exhibited in the space and thus become a new (self-referential) element in the laptop’s field of vision. When: 11 December – 27 December 2013 73

It empowers everyone to evade taxes, hide money and debt, and get away with anything by stealing the identities of real offshore companies. Loophole for All is a layered project that sets itself at the overlap between politics and art. Started as an hacker attack, it develops into a huge leak of secret information made available to everybody for free, in a way that mimics the now popular strategies of Wikileaks and Anonymous. In Zaruba’s works the interplay of shapes, shadows, reflections and light turns the objects both manmade and found in nature into new, often abstract, visuals. The works of Jeff Zaruba are highly acknowledged in the USA and abroad, being a valuable part of prestigious private and corporate collections. The author’s account includes dozens of successful personal and collective exhibitions. Nine of his works were selected to become examples of the World’s Best Black and White Photography in the book of the same name. Igor Yanovych: Flow The project presents a completely new works or artist. Yanovych continues to explore the states of matter, and tries to capture its changes. Instead of manipulating material, the artist allows it to express itself. In this way he accents the idea of the project – stream and fluidity inherent in the existence and nature.
