H.E. Hajia Alima Mahama Goes on Community Engagement tour

On Wednesday November 3, Ambassador Hajia Alima Mahama and her staff embarked on a tour of some Ghanaian owned Community Businesses in the Washington Metro Area. With a commitment to make the welfare of Ghanaians a priority Ambassador Alima Mahama interacted with the business owners to know their concerns about importing products from Ghana to the United States and also discussed investment opportunities in Ghana. The Ambassador encouraged Ghanaian businesses in the diaspora to abide by the regulations and requirements established by various countries especially the United States. The Ambassador and her team visited the Nyame Ye Restaurant in Alexandria. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Darkwa warmly received her and gave her Ghanaian culinary reception. The team went on to Nana Bour Boutique in Alexandria a retail outlet stocked with Ghanaian food items, shoes, native sandals and Ghanaian clothing. Nana Buor the owner of the shop walked the Ambassador through the big shop and expressed her appreciation to her for the visit and also making herself available to the community. Makola Market International Foods is a grocery store that retails Ghanaian and Caribbean food items and 220 electrical products for Ghana. Mr. Gordon Agyekum the owner took Ambassador Hajia Alima round the shop and discussed the possibility of reestablishing a Ghana Business Council in the Washington Metro Area to bring business together to forge unity and explore potential investment opportunities in Ghana. The Ambassador and her team ended the tour around 6pm and looking forward to continue at a later date. Elijeko Foundation donates 40 footer Container of books to Bosomtwe District Education Directorate

Elijeko Foundation a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in collaboration with their UK based partner Awesomebooks Inc as part of their corporate social responsibilities donated a forty tone footer container books to the Bosomtwe Constituency to improve the Literacy skills needed for the children of school going age in the Constituency. Madam Celestina Kalor Abapiri, country Director who presented the books to the Directorate on behalf of Mr. Andrews Kwabena Nyantakyi the founder and Executive Director of Elijeko Foundation, explained that, the organizations believe that they have to empower one another to unlock potentials and improve the lives of all, especially the children of school going age. According to her, the organizations ability to succeed should not be defined by where they were born or what resources they are fortunate enough to have, says together they work to re-define the collaborating with a network of partners around the work such as AwesomeBooks and the constituency to achieve their goal of improving literacy wherever they see the access and opportunities not in Ghana alone but Africa as a whole. Madam Kalor Abapiri, disclosed that the most important thing is how those books would impact students in the Constituency and expressed the hope that, they continue to build a lasting relationship with the Education Ministry to support other communities and constituencies in Ghana. Mr Prince Agyeman-Duah, the Bosomtwe District Director of Education expressed his profound gratitude to Elijeko Foundation for playing instrumental role in getting the books to the district through their partners Owesomebooks aim at promoting reading in the area. He was of the view that, the books has come at the right time to feed most of the libraries in the various
schools in the district while there would be supplementary measures for reference for teachers. He indicated that, the gesture would go a long way to complement the efforts of the managers of the education in the district to improve the standards of education, says over the last two years the district is doing extremely well in terms of performance, since 2019 with 66% in the BECE results 76% and 81% in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Rev. Ntim Fordjour, Deputy Minister for Education who grace the occasion commended the laudable initiative by Elijeko Foundation and their partners Owesomebooks aim to promote reading and improve the standards of education in the Constituency. According to him the initiative would go a long way to make positive impact in students academic performance, lauded all stakeholders in the district especially the Director and Member of Parliament (MP) who is also the Minister of Education for the performance in the last three years in improving the results of the BECE for reading brings confidence and opens students mind. WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 300 guests representing leaders in government, the arts, education, community and media attended the official Grand Opening of Swahili Village's "The Consulate" Washington DC location where they enjoyed the soon-to-be world famous nyama choma cooked specially for the event by Swahili Village's Founder, CEO and master chef Kevin Onyona.
Guests included over 40 diplomats from around the globe as well as ambassadors from African nations including the evening's chair, Her Excellency Hilda Suka-Mafudze, Ambassador of the African Union Mission representing 55 African countries; His Excellency Lazarus Amayo, Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya; and Dr. Ky Dele, Founder and President of The Made Man Foundation (TMM) & Principal of BluePoint Group Global. Dr. Benjamin F Chavis, Jr, served as Master of Ceremonies.

At the event, Swahili Village COO Emad Shoeb, a son of an Egyptian diplomat and successful entrepreneur, announced plans to open dozens of more restaurants, with several locations already in the works including Newark, New York City, National Harbor Maryland and Tyson's Corner in Virginia, to name a few.
"Eventually, we have plans for 50 restaurants all over the country and then we plan on taking it abroad," Shoeb said. "This is with the expectation that the Swahili Village brand will stand for the most respected restaurant and hospitality brand globally." A highlight for Swahili Village included the proclamation of "Swahili Village Day" as announced by Kimberly A. Bassett, Secretary of State for the District of Columbia.

The winner of the African most beautiful pageant Ms. Christell Awa a Congolese national extolled the virtues of the female Ambassador and promised to consult her in her reign as African Most beautiful USA. The two runners up from Ghana were Priscilla Assifuah and Hannah Agyapong on their part made a commitment to go to Ghana to engage in projects to inspire the youth. Nana Akosua Nkrumah Adasa III the organizer of the pageant said she used the pageant to raise funds to support the Abofrem Area Foundation as her way of giving back to the people in the Nkawie area of Ghana. She has built a school and a library in the town and continues to use such events to promote Ghana in the diaspora.

At the event, tablets with the Merck Manual were presented to embassy officials to support health care professionals in their countries. This distribution was made possible by Books For Africa’s ongoing partnership with Merck, in which a $150,000 grant is provided to supply medical books to students and professionals across the continent.
Her Excellency Alima Mahama recognized Books For Africa’s successful history of shipments to Ghana, including the recent repatriation of Kofi Annan’s personal library, citing Annan’s words, “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

The Borough of Brooklyn has named a street in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy) after Ghana, highlighting the country’s leading role in building bridges amongst the global African Family. BedStuy, has been a center of African American culture since the early 20th century and has been home to several cultural icons. Making the announcement and the presentation at the launching of “Destination Ghana” event at Weeksville Heritage Center, Councilman Robert E. Cornegy, Jr., on behalf of the people of Bed-Stuy and the Borough of Brooklyn, commended Ghana for the Year of Return initiative and the follow up Beyond the Return project. The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture , Hon. Dr Ibrahim Awal and the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman have been staking Ghana’s claim and engaging several business and opinion leaders in the city of New York to promote the destination . Asantefuohene Enstooled in Washington Metro Area
On Saturday, October 30, 2021, Mr. Frank Acheampong, a Washington DC based business magnate was enstooled as the Asantefuohene of Washington, DC Metro Area under the stool name Nana Owusu Acheampong Owoahene. There was a colorful display of Asante Culture with Asante Chiefs from various parts of the United States in attendance. Nana Owusu Acheampong Owoahene takes over from Nana Nyarko Ampem Darko who completed his term as the Asantefuohene of Washington DC Metro Area. The new chief and his team of traditional leaders swore the oath of allegiance before the Council of Elders of the Asanteman Association of Washington Metro Area. The members of the Council of Elders present were Nana Nyarko Ampem Darko (the immediate past Asantefuohene), Abusuapanin Frank Fofie, Otafrebuo Agyenim Boateng Pedie I (the Bogyawehene & Amoafo Akwamuhene, who once served as Asantefuohene for 12 years), Nana Owusu Kwandahor (Amoafo Manwerehene), Nana Baffour Awuah, Nana Kwasi Mensah, Mr. Kwasi Agyeman, Nana Serwaa Brakatu and Nana Afia Buor. Clad in traditional black cloth (kuntunkuni), as per Asante tradition, all the new traditional leaders were introduced to the Council of Elders and the other traditional leaders in the community including Nana Obuor Gyau (Adumhene of Bechem Traditional Area) and Nana Tentia Kwaasi (Kokofu Nkagyaamuhene). The Ghana Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Alima Mahama (Hajia) graced the occasion with some staff of the Embassy of Ghana in the persons of Ninette Danquah Ivo, Cynthia Djokoto, Janet Maku Koranteng and Karim Kudayah. Also with the entourage was Mr. Mohammed Idris, a respected community leader in the Washington, DC Metro Area. In his welcome address, Mr. Golash OpokuAkyeampong Adadey, the President of Asanteman Association for the past seven years, expressed his appreciation to Otumfuo Osei-Tutu, the Asantehene, for giving them the privilege and opportunity to exercise the first step process to project the traditions and culture of Asanteman in the diaspora. He also appreciated the members of the Asanteman Association for standing with him through his tenure and supporting many health and education initiatives and development projects in Asanteman. President Golash Adadey also mentioned that the Association has resolved to honor Her Excellency Alima Mahama (Hajia) as a life Patron of the Asanteman Association of Washington DC Metro Area

for her untiring efforts in reaching out to Ghanaians since she assumed office.
Ambassador Hajia Alima Mahama in her speech admonished the Ghanaian Community to unite to make a meaningful impact in their various communities. She urged them to take advantage of investment opportunities in Ghana. Furthermore, she also advised Ghanaians in the diaspora to support the building of the National Cathedral in Ghana for Ghana to have a befitting monument where national events can be held rather than the forecourt of the State house or Independence Square. Ambassador Alima also asked Ghanaians in the United States to register with the embassy in Washington DC to enable them to be recognized and get the needed support when the need arises. Benita Biney, the 12-year-old traditional dancing prodigy, entertained the gathering with her traditional dancing skills which swept the Ambassador and her staff off their feet to join.
After the traditional swearing-in ceremony, the newly enstooled traditional leaders changed their clothing from Black “kuntukuni” to black and white to signify celebration and the dawn of a new era. Ambassador Alima presented $500 and assorted drinks as a token to the Asanteman Association. The presentation was made on her behalf by George Kwasi Bright.
At a later date, Asanteman Association will seek the blessing and permission of Otumfuo, the Asante King for Nana Owusu Acheampong to swear the final oath of allegiance to one of Otumfuo’s paramount chiefs at a high-level traditional ceremony.

Groundbreaking held for New Life United Methodist Church@ St. Andrew's November 2021
New Life International United Methodist Church held a groundbreaking ceremony at 1 p.m., on Sunday, September 26th for its new building, which is being constructed on 845 North Howard Street near the INOVA Alexandria Hospital About 150 people attended the ceremony including the Mayor of Alexandria, United Methodist Leaders from the Virginia Conference, and Alexandria/Arlington District and Church members. Rev. John Obeng, the Senior Pastor of the church, opened the groundbreaking ceremony with welcoming remarks and prayer, which was followed by remarks by the Arlington and Alexandra area Superintendent. Rev. Dr. Sarah Calvert. She highlighted the significance of the event and congratulated the Church members for the historic feat. He also figured some of them needed comfort and support for staying strong alone, sometimes all by themselves and with no external family support or presence. In his expression about this, he noted that he could only do but little from the many burdens and pressures they face daily. For that, he shared the gifts he brought with him with them. And the joy and excitement in their faces meant one thing for him, that he was truly fulfilling the Gospel he preached -this humbles him... However, preaching the gospel and helping the vulnerable may be key to him, but also being a brother's keeper remains another virtue he extols. He expressed this too almost not too long after his return from Ghana when he jumped right back to preaching online and reaching the Ghanaian community in the diaspora as well as the local communities in the US where he has been heavily involved with the projects like his annual recognition of the Northern Virginia Police and first responders Department and annual trips to Israel among other humanitarian and charity deed.

Abofrem Area Foundation, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 organization based in the United States. The AAF is the brainchild of Nana Obaahemaa Nkrumah Akosua Adasa III, a Ghanaian-American, whose desire to provide the village of Abofrem, her original hometown near the township of Nkawie located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, as well as the surrounding villages, to get access to food, employment, education, sanitation and medical needs.

This Black company has raised $2.4M to build technology for cross-border commerce in Africa
Black-owned San Francisco-based and Lagos-based firm Klasha has raised $2.4 million in seed funding to build technology infrastructure for cross-border commerce in Africa. Klasha helps Africans buy from merchants across the globe, make payments in their local currencies, and have the product(s) delivered to them regardless of their location, TechCabal reports. The service is available in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya with plans to add three new countries in the fourth quarter of this year to add to the customer base of 10,000 people. With the new money, Klasha will “expand its technology to help international B2B and B2C businesses such as ASOS, Zara, Amazon or Zoom to receive payments seamlessly online in African currencies from consumers across Africa,” according to TechCabal. “By 2025, half of the world’s population will live
in Africa,” Klasha Founder and CEO Jessica Anuna said in the company announcement. “It is imperative that African consumers are able to remain globally competitive, which includes having access to the goods they want without payment or delivery restrictions.”
The funding round was led by Greycroft while Seedcamp, Berrywood Capital, AVG Basecamp Fund, Practical VC, Plug and Play, First Round VC, Expert Dojo, 2.12 Angels, MiLA Capital, and several angel investors. Klasha was founded by Anuna in 2018 as an online fashion retailer. Since relaunching five months ago, Klasha has processed more than 20,000 transactions across Africa, growing at an average rate of 366% from month to month.
Recently, the company expanded to Ghana with functionalities that include instant transfers of money

between the country and Nigeria. The startup also has a multi-currency wallet, which gives users the option to send and receive money in different currencies for free. Klasha comes at a time when international online and offline businesses face the challenge of accepting online payments from Africa.
