MEET YOUR SPEAKERS: Claire Dixon | AFLV Student Programs Coordinator

Claire Dixon is a proud member of the AFLV staff serving as the Coordinator, Student Programs. Claire came to AFLV after receiving her Master’s degree from Loyola University Chicago in Higher Education. Prior to working at AFLV, Claire worked in the field at various institutions and serving at her national sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, as a traveling consultant.

Anne Trask Forcier | Executive Director of Board Relations, The University of Vermont Foundation

Anne is a graduate of the University of Vermont and earned an M.A. with a focus on Higher Education Administration from Bradley University. Anne currently serves as Executive Director of Board Relations for the UVM Foundation where she works directly with the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Leadership Council and Fellows. She is a member of Pi Beta Phi and served on the Alumnae Advisory Committee and House Corporation for almost 30 years. Anne is also a member of the Order of Omega Board of Directors.

Kimberlee “Kim” Monteaux De Freitas | Fraternity & Sorority Life Advisor, University of Vermont Kim Monteaux De Freitas has served as the primary Fraternity & Sorority Life Advisor at the University of Vermont since 2006. Kim earned a B.A. in Graphic Communication & Electronic Imaging from Northern Michigan University and a M.S. in Education, College Student Development Administration from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Currently, she is a doctoral student in the Educational Leadership and Policy program at UVM and will graduate Fall 2017. Kim is a proud member of Phi Sigma Sigma.

Ryan O’Rourke | AFLV Executive Director

Ryan O’Rourke serves as the Executive Director for AFLV. Ryan earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from the University of Central Florida and a master’s degree in non-profit management from Florida Atlantic University. Ryan is an avid sports fan, loves live music, and is a proud husband and father.

Justin Rolnick | Greek Kitchen Management

Justin founded Greek Kitchen Management after establishing and successfully running his fraternity’s meal plan as an undergraduate. From the beginning, GKM’s mission has been to replicate the high quality food service Justin provided his fraternity to all Greek Life.

Shelley Sutherland | Co-founder of the House Directors Conference

Shelley began advising Greek life in 1972 at Indiana State University. In 2005, she retired from the University of Oregon. Between 1974 and 2009, she served as staff for the undergraduate regional conferences in the West and Mid-west regions and was instrumental in establishing conferences that have educated tens of thousands of Greek leaders. She is extremely proud of starting the House Directors Conference that has been conducted annually for almost 30 years. Several leadership awards are named in her honor, including an endowed scholarship at Oregon. She has been recognized with numerous awards from different organizations throughout her career.

Allison Swick-Duttine | Director of Fraternity/Sorority Life

Allison Swick-Duttine has worked with fraternal organizations at SUNY Plattsburgh since 1998. Allison is a founding board member and past president of HazingPrevention.org, served as a national vice president for Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority for 9 years, served as a board member for the Northeast Greek Leadership Association (NGLA) and has twice served as president of the SUNY Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Association. She is the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service, the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award and the NGLA Guentzler Outstanding Advisor Award. Allison completed her B.A. and M.A. degrees at Marshall University.

Vinícius “V” Vargas | Fraternity & Sorority Life Coordinator, University of Vermont

Vinícius is the Fraternity & Sorority Life Coordinator at the University of Vermont where he advises the IFC and assists in the oversight of 15 fraternities and sororities. Vinícius graduated in 2016 with a Master of Education in College Student Personnel, and he has been actively involved in the Association of Fraternity/ Sorority Advisors since graduate school by serving as a member of the Annual Meeting Graduate Staff and Educational Programs Committee. Vinícius also volunteers as a facilitator for Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, Triangle Fraternity, North-American Interfraternity Conference, and his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The only constant in the fraternity sorority world is change. With our communities in the media more than ever, and universities creating new rules, we must stay alert about what is happening. In this session, House Directors will learn about trends in fraternity/sorority life along with hearing what is on the horizon for our organizations.

Operating as Lake Champlain’s only cruise ship and floating restaurant, the Spirit of Ethan Allen offers tons of fun for every occasion! We’ll be taking part in the sunset cruise which offers a casual 2.5 hour evening boat ride around Lake Champlain, a light dinner buffet and cash bar, and our own private deck.

8:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Educational Session 1: Intergenerational Communication Anne Forcier

House Directors often need to communicate to different audiences – chapter officers, chapter members, alumni, parents, university officials, headquarters staff, and more. This session will explore ways to effectively communication with a wide variety of the essential stakeholders. Communication is more than words and understanding the many ways we share information is important in developing strategies that will help you be more effective in your House Director role.

Educational Session 2: Technology Use in Today’s Chapter Houses Claire Dixon

Technology is ever increasing in our world, and our chapter houses are not exempt from that. This session will explore basic technology use to help support the work of today’s House Director. We will touch on tips for social media, email, and online forms. House Director’s should leave the session with new tips and tricks to integrating technology into their work.

On the fun, clever, and educational tour, you’ll learn how teddy bears are put together from start to finish. The company has recently updated the tour route with additional sewing modules, improved the Bear Hospital, and added more visuals to enhance the tour experience. The Shelburne Vineyard will make you feel at home, whether you’re a new wine taster or a connoisseur. Your visit includes a tasting of their currently available wines, a souvenir wineglass and a guided tour of their winemaking facility and grounds. The grounds cover a total of 15.5 acres located all within a 7 mile radius of the Tasting Room, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

Hazing. It has caused at least one death per year since 1969. It often results in multimillion dollar settlements for injury. It has ended in closed chapters and boarded up houses. And oftentimes, it causes lifetime physical and emotional trauma for its victims. But do you know what hazing really is and how to spot the warning signs? Furthermore, do you know what to do about hazing if you suspect or are aware that it is occurring? This session will lead you through an exploration of what hazing is and why it occurs and help you understand what role you can play in stopping it.

Educational Session 6: Fostering Community & Supporting Students through Inclusive Language

Kimberlee Monteaux & Vinícius “V” Vargas

This program is designed to introduce participants to the concept of inclusive language. Participants will navigate different examples of inclusive language, how to address language concerns in their chapter facilities, and how it can be used to foster community and support chapter members who may not adhere to traditional social and/or gender norms.

E X C U R S I O N S Thursday, June 22 Ben & Jerry’s Tour and Lunch at Trapp Family Lodge [Pre-Conference] We’re going on an ice cream tour! We’ll be exploring the Ben & Jerry’s factory in Waterbury, VT, which is only 30 minutes away from where it all started. After the tour, we will take the provided transportation to the Trapp Family Lodge for lunch. This European inspired lodge features amazing views of the surrounding mountains and the town of Stowe, VT.

Sunday, June 25 Maple City Candy [Post-Conference] Get off the bus, and visit the old-fashioned Maple City Candy store! They offer 100% pure Vermont maple syrup, maple candy, maple popcorn, maple sugar, homemade fudge, gift baskets, apparel, souvenirs, and more.

Monday, June 26 Hop-on-Hop-off Bus Tour [Post-Conference] Discover Montréal by touring around in London-style double decker busses. Bask in the glory of the Notre Dame Basilica, stroll through Chinatown, and walk along the water of the Old Port. Be inspired and spend an afternoon at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts. Tuesday, June 26 Grévin Montréal Wax Museum [Post-Conference]

On April 17, 2013, Musée Grévin’s parent company, Compagnie des Alpes, opened the museum’s first property outside France, Grévin Montréal, at the Montréal Eaton Centre. Similar in scope to the original Paris location, Grévin Montréal features wax adaptations of people relevant to Canadian and Québécois history and culture.

Notre Dame Basilica Aura Experience [Post-Conference] First, you will explore the Basilica while discovering a series of multimedia installations highlighting the artwork beneath the building’s rood screens. Then, you will make your way to the center of the Basilica for the second, immersive portion of the experience. No matter where you sit, you’ll be able to enjoy this sensory experience to its fullest!
