hink svelte sophistication, breathtaking design and cool, classy, contemporary-chic style and Stefan Antoni immediately comes to mind. Creating pieces of architectural art that ooze pure glamour – some of which can only be described as ethereal – Stefan Antoni has changed the face of design, as we know it.

Driven by the dynamic combination of Stefan Antoni, Philip Olmesdahl, Greg Truen and Phillippe Fouché, SAOTA – Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects has taken architecture and design to new heights. With strong roots in South Africa and a well-known reputation on the international scene, in fact now over 80% of their business is worldwide, SAOTA capitalises on a unique understanding of an ever-evolving industry to offer expert services to the corporate, institutional, commercial and residential marketplace. An innovative and dedicated approach to the execution of projects, both internationally and locally, have won the firm numerous awards and commendations from some of the most respected institutions worldwide and made SAOTA a globally sought-after brand. Energetic, dynamic and extraordinarily talented,

Stefan Antoni takes the helm at SAOTA, founding the firm in the late eighties and growing from strength to strength ever to since. His love for design was borne, when as a child, he had a magical encounter in a huge cathedral under construction and knew then he wanted to be an architect. On completion of his Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Cape Town in 1985 (which he passed with a first class pass), he went on to set up Stefan Antoni Architects , the architectural practice which is known today as SAOTA - Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects. “In the eighties, the architecture scene was very flat. I was totally naïve and enthusiastic, but always had little private jobs on the go – an alteration here and an addition there – and I built up clients that way,” says Antoni. “Since then, the architecture industry has developed incredibly and become much more competitive. Clients are better informed and the Internet exposes us to what is happening in the world, so it has become an international playing field as opposed to in the eighties, where we only worked locally.” Sharing his passion for design and architecture are senior partners / Directors, Philip Olmesdahl, Greg

Truen and Phillippe Fouché, who each bring their own knowledge, expertise and flair to the business. After graduating from the University of Natal in 1995, Philip moved to Cape Town and began working for Stefan Antoni Architects in the same year. Superb organisational skills, exceptional design and excellent management abilities saw him moving quickly through the ranks and he was made partner in 2002, with a key role in running the business. Greg Truen completed a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Natal in 1991 and practised in Durban joining Stefan Antoni Architects as a Project Architect in 1995. Three years later, he was made partner, where his interest in current affairs and creative innovation continue to contribute towards the success of the firm. On completion of a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Pretoria in 2001, Phillippe gained extensive experience in institutional, educational, residential, and urban design projects, before joining the SAOTA team as a Project Architect in 2008. With a strong interest in vernacular design, sustainability and a responsive design approach, Phillippe’s forté is to explore unique solutions that both meet the client’s requirements and fit into the context as a whole.

revamp of a popular bar called the Fireman’s Arms to the breath-taking behemoth homes of Fresnaye and Clifton, the firm also has a number of international masterpieces to boot, including Zilwa by the Banyan Trees, Sushi, Popenguine and Sinndia by Baobabs and a few very sculptural villas in Switzerland. Inspired by Jean Nouvel, who is always coming up with great new ideas, Antoni strives to create ‘timeless works of great spaces, simplicity and the least amount of fuss to make a great and powerful statement, even if it is an understated one’. When asked what he thought contributed towards being a Leading Legacy Brand, Antoni feels that one needs to be distinctive. “People must be able to identify work that is being produced is something a little bit special or exceptional. To me, it’s all about building a community or family of people that feel like they belong to something special.” This principle echoes throughout the firm’s 110-strong workforce. Merging their passion and enthusiasm for design and creative expertise, they are able to tackle challenges head-on and produce the exceptional work we see.

“We are all architects,” says Antoni, “we split the projects up between ourselves and are all involved in design. Philip and Greg oversee the two main teams consisting of project leaders and teams that see projects through from inception to completion.”

“Everyone who joins our company is passionate about design and in this way, we grow each other. We challenge each other to be better and drive our love of design to greater heights. In this way, it’s not a job really, it’s our passion and we live and breathe it.”

Nearly three decades of architecture and design have produced a company portfolio that would be hardpressed to beat. From their very first design project – a

Nihiwatu has won a swathe of awards since it reopened in 2014 and in 2015 became a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World.

After buying Nihiwatu in 2012, Chris Burch and South African born business partner, hotelier James McBride, began realising their dream of turning the resort into a sumptuous yet laidback escape. The 32 villas include the spectacular Raja Mendaka comprising five villas, each with its own pool, set in a sprawling private garden – popular with families – and Mamole Tree House that consists of three elevated villas connected by a bamboo bridge. Just one of the achievements of the Mamole construction team, is the infinity pool set among the treetops. Then there is Puncak, a three-bedroomed villa that resembles a traditional Sumbanese house – or Kunatar, a spacious two-storey villa with a private deck and infinity pool and open-air living room designed for couples wanting some alone-time. The range of accommodation truly caters for every type of guest and provides in every need.

If you prefer to stay on land, opt for their new Spa Safari, a full day’s journey up Sumba’s dramatic coast to the nearby Nihi Oka Valley where dedicated therapists offer a number of treatments using natural, local ingredients at the spa villa. Nihiwatu also has hand-picked in-house experts – health gurus, spear fishermen, surfers, artists, painters, poets and even magicians – to host inspiring and fascinating talks.

It is, however, the beach that remains the star of the show. Bookended by two rocky headlands, surfers have less than a hundred metres to swim before catching the island’s famous waves.

Well-distilled, created and time-honoured cognac has always been synonymous with superlative sipping for the sophisticated palates of the world. But savouring the subtle flavours of a world-renowned Louis XIII Cognac is an exclusive experience. Unsurprising, when you consider each decanter takes four generations of cellar masters and over 100 years to craft. Inspired to pair the amber liquid with art in the form of a film called “100 Years – The Movie You Will Never See”, the cognac creators have teamed up with director Robert Rodriguez and French art de vivre enthusiast, actor John Malkovich, who also developed an original screenplay for “100 Years”. Louis XIII’s global director, Ludovic du Plessis said they were ‘thrilled that this talented actor and creative filmmaker were inspired to join us on this artistic endeavour’. 42

“Louis XIII is a true testament to the mastery of time, and we sought to create a proactive piece of art that explores the dynamic relationship of the past, the present, and the future”, said du Plessis. Based on what the world might look like in a 100 years from now, three teasers have been produced for “100 Years”. All start with the same dialogue but present a different earth future. One posits a world dominated by nature, another imagines the earth technologically-advanced and ruled by it, while the last shows humans running away from humanoid robots controlling the planet. Which vision is closest to tomorrow’s reality? That will be up to those privileged viewers to both question and decide. In the meantime, you can ponder over teasers to help you determine.

However, the futuristic movie is destined to remain a mystery for the foreseeable future. At least until it’s official premier a century from now - on 18 November 2115. Just as the Louis XIII’s cellar masters’ cognac creation will remain an unseen and untasted result, so will cast and crew featured in “100 Years” never get to see the movie’s final cut. At an exclusive preview of the film’s trailer in Los Angeles, Louis XIII and John Malkovich placed the film reel into a self-timing, state-of-the-art safe. Counting down the years, it will automatically open, sans key or code, 100 years from now. And those ticket-holding guests - who’s predecessors lived in 2015 - will be welcomed to the film’s preview along with Louis XIII’s future cellar master at the Domaine du Grollet in Cognac, France.

Even though it’s ‘the movie you will never see’, John Malkovich has a positive take on time and its potential rewards. “When I was first approached I really loved the idea...I mean, in a way I wish all the films I made wouldn’t have been seen for a hundred years. I don’t know how much that would change the way they are regarded,” said John Malkovich. However art afficionados and cognac connoisseurs alike view this novel collaboration, there’s one time-honoured tradition you don’t have to wait one hundred years to see and taste. It’s all in a glass of Louis XIII. Now.

the United States, Africa and Russia.

Founded in 1874 selecting the finest grapes cultivated in the Grande Champagne territory of Cognac in France, Louis XIII has withstood its reputable esteem as an ambassador of the French “art-de-vivre” since its inception. As each decanter that is crafted requires immense time, patience and knowledge descended through the generations, each drop of the ultimate end product encompasses and resembles as many as 250 flavours. Furthermore, as four generations of cellar masters are required in order to produce each decanter, any bottle that is presently commenced might only be ready for consumption in the following century. In plain terms, du Plessis describes each individual bottle as a unique and precisely calculated blend of twelve eaux de vie with the youngest bottle being forty years old and the oldest being one hundred years old. This firmly cements the widely held perception of this cognac as one of the most luxurious spirits in the world. Additionally, this unique blend ensures that no resulting two bottles will be identically the same and thereby produces an irreplaceable quality worthy of classifying a brand that is luxurious enough in order to “[rival] the likes of Chanel, Hermes, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Bellucci.” Adopting a slightly different approach to the aforementioned brands, Louis XIII utilises hotel bars and restaurants as platforms for display and can be encountered in an array of prestigious locations, amongst which Las Vegas, Sydney, Hong Kong and London are included in addition to a selection of others. The exclusive and finite cognac range is available in magnum, varying bottle sizes and in two limited editions, including black pearl and royal cask. On a more personal level, du Plessis sites Ralph Lauren, Maison Corthay and Jaguar as several of his preferential indulgences and delights in traveling to Paris, New York and Saint Martin. Individuals who surpass themselves, demonstrate commitment and invest themselves and their efforts in proportion to the legacy that they desire to leave behind capture his admiration, thereby evincing the values that have catapulted him to his current platform of influence and he is an avid sportsman, participating in running and tennis.

“Vanessa Gounden, female mining magnate and arguably the most successful and pioneering female entrepreneur of our country” What could possibly be the link between a mining magnate, a political activist, the National Intelligence Agency, an entrepreneur and a fashion designer? These actually all refer to one person – Vanessa Gounden. And this is her story.

children living in a house with no electricity or hot water. At the age of 10, the apartheid state of South Africa forcibly removed her family to a dormitory township with minimal facilities. They were also cut off from their previous livelihood.

Vanessa Gounden, female mining magnate and arguably the most successful and pioneering female entrepreneur of our country, was born in South Africa in 1961, making her a typical child of first generation South Africans. She grew up on a smallholding with her grandparents in a mixed racial area near Durban. Vanessa spent her childhood helping her family, cutting and preparing roses to sell to the florists in the district. They were 4 adults and 16

Then, as a teenager, Vanessa joined the ANC, where she met her future husband, today a very successful and recognised businessman, Dr Sivandran Gounden. She combined her activism with getting a university degree and, later on, became a primary school teacher. After the ANC government came to power in 1994, she helped rebuild a new South Africa on personal request by late President Nelson Mandela. She served in the Mandela administra-

tion and became actively involved in the trade union movement, before becoming the director of change management in the police. Later on, under President Thabo Mbeki, Vanessa headed up human resources for the National Intelligence Agency, recruiting the country’s top spies. Despite her success in politics, Vanessa decided to join her husband in starting their own business together – something that would give new direction to her life and be the beginning of so many exciting opportunities. HolGoun Investment Holdings was born – a South African investment holding company which was built from humble beginnings into an extremely successful multi-divisional company headed by Vanessa and her husband, Dr Sivandran (or Sivi to friends and family) Gounden, who is, as founder, still involved as Non-Executive Chairman of the HolGoun Group. Just like his wife, Dr Sivi Gounden has made his mark in the business sector: He was formerly the Chief Executive Officer of Bateman Engineering N.V., where he was responsible for the listing of Bateman Engineering N.V. on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange. And one simply cannot overlook his successes as Non-Executive Director of Optimum Coal, Lonmin Plc, Grindrod Limited and Anglo American SA, as well as Director-General of the Department of Public Enter-

prises, where he was responsible for the listing of Telkom SA on the New York Stock Exchange Inc and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. He presently holds directorships in Samancor, various HolGoun Group of Companies, and Daly Credit Corporation. But Vanessa’s story takes another interesting turn… Not only is she a highly respectable business women, Vanessa is also known as a successful fashion designer – one who is now the proud owner of a recently launched flagship store on Conduit Street – the epicentre of London’s luxury shopping – making her the first South African designer to own and open a freestanding store in the United Kingdom. Her exquisite and unique clothing range, Vanessa G (which was first launched in London in 2011), has been seen worn by women like Yasmin Le Bon, Jade Jagger, Poppy Delevigne and Natalia Vodianova – all of whom reflect Vanessa’s ideals of strong wom-

en that have an appreciation of the arts and dressing in a considered manner. Vanessa may be mingling in different circles than those she found herself in as a child, but she still remembers what is was like to be marked as ‘poor’ and ‘underprivileged’. Besides her involvement in various charities and community help, the image of the rose is also often used as inspiration of her designs – a flower which played a large role in her childhood, and which could be seen as a simple reminder of her past. Whoever said that mining and fashion have nothing in common, needs to say that in front of Vanessa Gounden – an inspirational and driven businesswoman who has made a name for herself in notoriously difficult industries as diverse as mining to fashion.

One of South Africa’s most respected producers of world-class wines Apart from being one of South Africa’s most respected producers of world-class wines, La Motte Wine Estate, enjoying an exceptionally beautiful setting in South Africa’s Cape Winelands, excels in offering its guests an experience that goes far beyond wine. Its historical charm amid the picturesque vineyards of Franschhoek; its stylish offering in the enjoyment of wine, cuisine and the arts; and above all its people’s warm spirit of sharing, set this estate apart as a wine tourism destination – truly in a class of its own. The unique La Motte experience starts with a warm welcome in the estate’s sociable Tasting Room, highly commended for its inviting ambiance as visitors are introduced to the fruits of Cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche. Here, a variety of La Motte’s award-winning wines can be sampled in a sophisticated setting, affording guests an unimpeded view of the working and maturation cellars. Tastings are enjoyed amidst original works of art by acclaimed South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef

(1886 – 1957), after whom La Motte’s Pierneef Collection of premium wines is named. Pierneef’s name also echoes in the elegant award-winning Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant on the estate, where his creativity as an artist inspires Chef Michelle Theron’s modern interpretation of traditional cuisine. Having cultivated and nurtured an impassioned love for traditional South African cuisine from her early days, Chef Micelle Theron immediately identified with the restaurant’s focus when she joined the team in 2011. Also involved in the foundational research and development of the estate’s Cape Winelands-inspired cookbook, her passion for heritage cuisine and seasonal and locally sourced ingredients was reaffirmed. Since being appointed as Executive Chef of Pierneef à La Motte in 2014, Michelle has been treating restaurant patrons to a beautiful and fresh version of Cape Winelands Cuisine – whether it is on the lunch-time à la carte menu or the fine-dining chef’s menu for dinner. Designated the title of one of the top ten restaurants in South Africa by the 2013 Eat Out DSTV Food Network Restaurant Awards and primely situated on the idyllic grounds of the renowned La Motte estate. The restaurant’s concept of regional Cape Winelands cuisine, creatively adapts customary local food into contemporary and ingenious masterpieces. As a notable demonstration, one such signature dish is an innovate restructuring of the traditional Cape Winelands chicken pie, which is sumptuously comprised of the finest locally sourced free range chicken, preserved lemon, fig saucisson sec, quail egg, white wine and preserved lemon sauce. Furthermore, Theron’s masterful and bespoke experimentation with seasonal and sustainably-sourced ingredients has culminated in the inclusion of smoked snoek tortellini accompanied by grapefruit, red pepper, braised greens and smoked sweet potato as well as a vegetarian option of fresh, pickled and roasted beetroot partnered with double-baked goat’s cheese. Theron’s flair for beautifully plated, well-balanced dishes extends beyond starters and main courses and together with Pastry Chef Vicky Gurovich, the pastries and desserts, 76

The familyfavourite South African milk tart is reinvented by merging cinnamon gel, honey ice cream and a puff crumble into a palatable sensation while contrasting flavours and textures beautifully combine in lemon and thyme marshmallows with poppy seeds and tuille. Visitors to Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant can indulge in the estate’s internationally acclaimed food and wine offering amidst an aesthetically alluring atmosphere with original Pierneef art, statement porcelain chandeliers and an inviting fire-place for the winter months, framed by serene garden landscapes and enchanting oak trees. Titled in ode to Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, famed for his exceptional landscapes, Pierneef à La Motte stays true to the artist’s admiration for beauty and heritage – both with setting and cuisine.

gree in viticulture cellar technology at Elsenberg, a tertiary agricultural college outside Stellenbosch in the heart of the South African Winelands. His career as a winemaker kicked of in 1984 at Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch and he later joined Windmeul Cellar in Paarl. His dedication to wine saw him moving quickly through the ranks from assistant winemaker to chief winemaker and ultimately CEO of the co-operative winery before joining La Motte in 1998. Unlike many other winemakers, Hein adds his personal touch to the wine produced on his farms. Each year, Hein and his winemakers visit a wine farm in France where they produce their own personal wine, with their individual selections. Every year he tastes a wide selection of international wines. “I can only make the best wine if I have tasted the best wine.”

The affect his experience has had on Leopard’s Leap Wines is evident and it has been established as a global wine brand sold in more than 40 countries. He has helped build Leopard’s Leap into a top-notch upmarket retail brand. With his extensive experience in the wine industry, Hein was a founding member of Meridian, a South African distribution company. He is also a board member of the Franschhoek Wine Valley association and is actively involved in promoting Franschhoek in Asia. Introducing the world to the richness of South African wines has always been Hein’s passion. His great love for wine and winemaking led Hein to receive the prestigious Personality of the Year Award from at the AGM of the Institute of Cape Wine Masters held on 12 May 2014. The Institute of Cape Wine Masters recognized him for his efforts in helping the Cape Wine Academy continue its education programmes after private investors withdrew their support. Hein is extremely passionate about CSI projects and believes in creating the right environments for South African entrepreneurs to be successful. His involvement in the wine educational programmes for previously disad-

Through a joint venture with a Chinese importer Hein launched a wine education programme for salesmen in China. His core business value begins with opportunity and believes there needs to be a perception of opportunity alongside a positive energy; something all entrepreneurs need. “In South Africa, we have too many people with minimal experience and they then only measure up to that minimal experience. I believe if you want to compete with the world industries you have to taste what the world is producing, that is the philosophy behind our brands and the way wine is produced and distributed.” Hein is a true all rounder; merging his passion for wine with his passion for business has allowed him to successfully grow into one of the most recognized winemakers and businessman in South Africa.

Among his private businesses, Analjit has significant interests in real estate in India and lifestyle-related ventures in the Western Cape, South Africa, pertaining to viticulture, winemaking and hospitality. The activities centre around the Franschhoek valley and Riebeek-Kasteel in the Swartland region. Analjit’s love affair with South Africa started when he first visited the country with his daughter for the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2010. On subsequent trips he visited Cape Town and ventured into the Cape winelands, where he felt “a deep sense of belonging, of energy, a sense of place” in the valley of Franschhoek. He began his search for a property and knew that he had found the right place the minute he set foot on a 40-hectare farm on the slopes of the Dassenberg mountain. His company bought the property and, subsequently, those on either side. The three farms, Klein Dassenberg, Dieu Donné and Von Ortloff, have been amalgamated within the Leeu Collection portfolio, under the name Leeu Estates. The Afrikaans word leeu is a translation of Singh, the Sanskrit word for lion. Heritage Square, an exciting new culinary offering in Franschhoek, is also part of the Leeu Collection portfolio, as is Tuk Tuk, a microbrewery in collaboration with the Cape Brewing Company (CBC). Prior to these properties being bought, he had already acquired a stake in Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, which was started by award-winning winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux as Mullineux Family Wines. A trained chemist, he understood the alchemy behind winemaking but decided to learn more by taking a trip to Napa Valley in the USA to see how things work and to taste wines. Today, he is a member of the prestigious Napa Valley Reserve Wine Club. “South Africa is a beautiful country with the friendliest people, who have made me feel truly welcome. I am excited about the great opportunities that have become available to me and look forward to learning and making a contribution, in particular to the country’s top-notch wine industry,” says Analjit, who only serves South African wine at his home in India.

“The only way to bring that creativity out is by working hard and by really having a passion for what we do“ - Gerhard Swart

Success in business is dependent on a number of factors: outstanding product delivery, operational excellence, customer service orientation, financial mastery and technology savviness to name a few. But increasingly it is Creativity, in the form of innovation-driving and out-of the-box thinking that is fast becoming the most treasured competitive asset and biggest differentiator in the world of business. And it’s the brands and business leaders, who support and celebrate creative thinking, who are leading the way.

Flagstone Wines are one of South Africa’s most important premium brands. They take creativity in business very seriously; in fact, their motto is “we are born creative”. The delicious, distinctive taste of Flagstone’s wines are a direct result of the creativity and fanatical dedication of their winemaking team. Flagstone’s Chief Winemaker, Gerhard Swart, believes that one should never stagnate or become complacent, especially in a competitive world of wine making. “You always have to think about how you can stand out from the crowd. Be it more interesting labels, varieties or, like we do at Flagstone, combining unique ‘terroirs’ in order to create wines that are intriguing and unique”. Swart talks of winemaking as a labour of love rather than

a formalised, knowable equation. Each Flagstone wine has its own unique story, with evocative tales ranging from myths of flying dragons to a dark horse. Most noteworthy is that the inspiration for these award-winning wines comes from vastly different places. What is common to all of them is that the creative lights went on. Swart continues, My mentor, Flagstone Wines Founder Bruce Jack says, “Creativity needs to find you working.” The only way to bring that creativity out is by working hard and by really having a passion for what you do... If you are not happy in what you do every day, then the creativity will stop dead in its tracks.” It is this meticulous, yet unstructured, approach that has won them more than a few awards. The International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) sets the international benchmark for quality. Now in its 46th year, the IWSC receives entries from nearly 90 countries worldwide. Last year, Flagstone received silver medals for seven of their wines. Their young wines have also done fantastically well, with a slew of national class winners, a national champion and a Michael Phelps-like haul of gold and silver medals.

“The world is filled with talented artists and you have to use your creativity to do something unique.“ - Lionel Smit

The Michelangelo Awards heaped praise on their Writers Block Pinotage, awarding it the only platinum medal for Pinotage in the competition. Their single varietal reds followed suit, with Music Room, Dark Horse and the Dragon Tree blend all collecting medals. In the midst of all this success however, Gerhard Swart maintains that more important than all the accolades, is the legion of wine lovers who savour the unhurried quality of Flagstone Wines. In the competitive world of luxury vehicles, creativity also plays an important role in determining the success of exclusive vehicle brand, Maserati. Their motto,“the absolute opposite of ordinary”, speaks for itself. Maserati has a heritage and a pedigree that far outstretches many of its competitors, and the creative use of the brand creates an unrepeatable moment for the drivers of their cars. Their vehicles stretch the realms of imagination, design and engineering. Everything about Maserati is bespoke and this is reflected when each customer makes their choice.

thing that drives customers to purchase their vehicles, but rather their holistic approach that creates customers who become brand ambassadors for life. Without Creativity, there wouldn’t be Maserati. Without creativity, there would also not be art, nor artists like Lionel Smit. Lionel is a phenomenon on the South African art scene, best known for his contemporary portraiture executed on vast canvases and sculptures. His works have been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London, as well as in Australia, Hong Kong and the USA. His works are central to a number of prominent private collections; including Standard Chartered Bank and Graff Delaire wine estate. One of his paintings was even featured on the cover of Christie’s Auction Catalogue. Smit says of creativity in the art world: “From a business perspective, you have to be creative in terms of strategizing, and developing new markets and ideas of approaching the art world. The world is filled with talented artists, and you have to use your creativity to do something unique.”

As a business, the tools of creativity are further establishing the Maserati brand in South Africa. It is no one

“Strive for perfection in everything you do” – guides the company’s every action particularly during the creation of a new motor car.

Compromise is not a word recognised in the Rolls-Royce lexicon. Indeed the company continues to live by the clarion cry of co-founder Sir Henry Royce to “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.” The first part of this maxim – “Strive for perfection in everything you do” – guides the company’s every action particularly during the creation of a new motor car. The second – “Take the best that exists and make it better” – has been clearly evidenced in the success of both Phantom Series II and Ghost Series II as they were carefully updated in 2012 and 2014 respectively. And when Rolls-Royce judged that it was time for an authentic gentleman’s Gran

Turismo to return to the world stage, it was guided by the third part of Sir Henry’s maxim: “When it does not exist, design it.” And thus, Wraith was born. “It is always darkest just before the dawn” In the most challenging times, the phrase “It is always darkest just before the dawn” – originally coined by English Restoration preacher Thomas Fuller – resonates as a beacon of hope. This early morning darkness, where apparitions such as phantoms, ghosts or wraiths have been imagined, and where one’s apprehensions lurk, is brushed aside by an energising burst of early morning sunlight as one awakens to a new dawn and the endless possibilities of a new day.

To be a true Rolls-Royce, Dawn had to deliver the hushed driving experience associated with all Rolls-Royces Such was the feeling in 1952 as the world was finally emerging from a period of economic austerity following protracted war. That year, the world looked forward in hope as the world’s first passenger jet, the British deHavilland Comet, made its first commercial flight; the Big Bang Theory of the creation of the Universe was first propounded, and Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne of the United Kingdom.

Royce, Dawn had to deliver the hushed driving experience associated with all Rolls-Royces. At the same time the only choice for a Rolls-Royce was a fabric roof for reasons of aesthetics, romance and brand appropriateness. There is nothing more romantic than driving a convertible in the rain at night and hearing the drops pattering on the roof. In conversation with its customers, Rolls-Royce realised that they felt the same way.

Like an athlete, Rolls-Royce Dawn appears poised, taught and ready to go. The latent acceleration and tension in the surfaces are increased through completely new panels which evince curvature that creates a tighter surface and a more powerful silhouette which hints at what lies beneath. Without question, the engineering highlight of the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is the new roof. To be a true Rolls-

Working with a fabric roof configuration, the Rolls-Royce engineering team set themselves a challenging goal which they were unwilling to compromise on – to make the quietest convertible car in the world today. This quest for silence applied to all aspects of the engineering of the new roof and by extension the new motor car.

HEALTHCARE Dr Simon Moyes, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon WRITTEN BY | Kathy Malherbe

Timeless Luxury

D

With 9000 operations under his belt, he combines the latest in sophisticated imaging technology with his considerable experience as an orthopaedic surgeon to give an effective and accurate diagnosis.

Dr Simon Moyes, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Wellington Hospital in the UK is considered conservative. This has no bearing on his political proclivity rather the ‘25% strike rate’ in his orthopaedic practice. It refers to the number of patients who consult Moyes and end up under the knife or more accurately - the arthroscope during key-hole surgery. Moyes always wanted to be a surgeon and through serendipity during his rotation as a houseman at The Middlesex Hospital, he ended up working with legendary surgeon Sir Rodney Sweetnam. Moyes says, ‘He was brilliant and it was a very lucky break (so to speak) and the beginning of his surgical career.’ ‘I was smitten.’ he says.

In the mid-eighties and nineties, keyhole surgery was coming of age to treat shoulders, knees and ankles. ‘Only a handful of surgeons were using it,’ he says. ‘ It was pioneering and became my passion’. ‘Key hole,’ ‘minimally invasive,’ or ‘arthroscopic.’ – the procedure by any other name is just as sweet. As the name suggests, it is surgery through a tiny incision, with a camera fixed onto a surgical instrument called an arthroscope with video magnification on a screen. It results in a far quicker recovery time and less scarring.

It is ideal for many orthopaedic procedures in joints, such as repairing torn cartilage, ligament and tendon reconstruction and smoothing out bone defects. As opposed to being 114

Affluence Magazine |

prostrate for weeks after traditional surgery, 90% of his patients, Lazarus-like, literally get up and walk after the day surgery. It is this keyhole surgery on knees, feet, shoulders and ankles that has made Moyes one of the most renowned and sought after orthopaedic surgeons. Considered a medicinal Messiah of joint damage, it is not surprising that 20% of his patients travel from outside the UK for a consultation. His patients read like the Who’s Who and travel from the Middle East, the African continent and as far as Japan and Russia. If London is the capital of the world in terms of medical expertise, then Wellington Hospital where Moyes has his rooms, must surely be the royal residence. With 9000 operations under his belt, he combines the latest in sophisticated imaging technology with his considerable experience as an orthopaedic surgeon to give an effective and accurate diagnosis. It’s not just skill and surgical expertise however, which makes his practice so popular. Thomas Edison said many years ago that ‘The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and the cause and prevention of diseases.’ It may be overkill but the gist of it is that it is no longer a world of cut and fix - Moyes is a perfect example of taking a holistic approach to healing. He says ‘About five years ago I took myself in hand, changed my eating habits and embarked on a varied programme of exercise. This included

But if patient testimonials are anything to go by, Seneca, The Roman philosopher once said, ‘People can pay the doctor for his trouble, for his kindness they still remain in his debt.’

cardio and weight bearing exercise as well as yoga. I am very much a fan of ‘use it or lose it’ and believe that regular and varied exercise prevents joint damage and can ward off other diseases like cancer and even dementia. ‘For the 75% of patients not suitable for surgery and who, I feel, would benefit from conservative treatment, I refer to a network of physiotherapists. I select the physio practices both geographically and according to treatment protocol and standards. I admittedly set the bar very high. Once I have referred them, I need to know they are in the best hands. However, some injuries and wear and tear do need surgery – depending on the severity and the age of patients. ‘Unfortunately not ALL surgery lends itself to keyhole, but I can say that 90% of my patients fall into this category.’ All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and Moyes is in an industry where work can become all encompassing. However, he can play with the best of them. His passion as a surgeon is matched by his love of skiing. A self-confessed ‘skiphiliac,’ he regularly nips off to his chateau in Val d’isere to relax on the slopes. He believes it is his regime of exercise and remaining supple that prevents him being one of the many joint casualties in a notoriously accident-prone sport. Off piste, both in surgical and skiing terms, he is known to enjoy a glass or two of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Although he says he is no wine aficionado the choice of wine suggests a closet oenophile… His love of all things French includes both the ski resort and their vintage wines. Generally, surgeons do not enjoy a reputation for having a good bedside manner. But if patient testimonials are anything to go by, Seneca, The Roman philosopher once said, ‘People can pay the doctor for his trouble, for his kindness they still remain in his debt.’ A letter from patient, Erin, suggests Moyes has a full debtor’s ledger. She says, ‘Your professionalism and follow up efforts and support to make sure I was comfortable and recovering as expected has been one of the most humbling experiences with a doctor in my life.’

Now, the knights in shining armour who appear to have found the chalice of regeneration, are scientists specialising in stem cell research. He says while using stem cells is still theoretically experimental, trials globally are ongoing and showing good early results. Research is showing that much later in life stem cells are able to regenerate those niggly bits of our bodies that silently wear away as we age or are affected by injury. It is not only research but also harvesting techniques which are improving exponentially. ‘Unfortunately the quality of stem cells we produce decreases as we get older but they are still accessible and invaluable’, he says. ‘My colleagues and I are harvesting stem cells to heal, amongst other things, knee cartilage and Achilles tendons that run from behind the foot to the calf.’ Although stem cell techniques are a breakthrough Moyes cautions against the ‘cowboys out there’ using stem cells without the proper protocols in place. He says at Wellington Hospital every procedure will be carefully monitored and all medical personnel must adhere strictly to stringent regulations. Fat is a good source of stem cells, however, regulations currently prevent us from using this for joint issues and we will be using bone marrow derived stem cells from the hip/pelvis. Moyes has a refreshingly holistic approach to the surgical discipline. He says, ‘I hold a particular interest in sports injuries and in the role of nutrition in orthopaedics and sports medicine. I work closely with colleagues both in and outside of my direct discipline - rheumatologists, physiotherapists, personal trainers and dieticians.’ What’s not to like? It seems just as Moyes fell for arthroscopic surgery as a young intern, so too are his patients who regardless whether they undergo surgery or not are both healed – and smitten.

Then there is pioneering science. Cartilage damage is the often the nemesis of recreational and professional sportsmen but according to Moyes, while cartilage regeneration has been the ‘holy grail’ for orthopaedic surgeons for some time, it appears medicine has made its own long jump forward in the science of stem cell research.
