WHO ARE WE? AFC! Lest We Forget!

Today we pause and reflect about those who fought and served our country but particularly during the First World War. In commemoration, we would like to share the story of one soldier who is the great great Uncle of Gemma Layfield, Captain of the Annerley FC BWPL team. Clinton Gregory Siebenhausen was the first born child and eldest son of a farmer in the small town of Allora between Toowoomba & Warwick on the Darling Downs. His grandparents were both German immigrants who came to work the land in the new State of Queensland and although he had slight autism, he led an extraordinary life. On November 17, 1915 one year after the start of the First World War, Clinton joined the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) at age 19 and soon enough would find himself fighting on the Western Front in Europe. In October 1914, Australia sent its first soldiers overseas on active service to join force with the Allies throughout Europe. Clinton’s story starts here, in June 1916, where he embarked aboard the Star of Victoria to join the 7th training Battalion at Rollestone in England. Despite his constant battle with scabies and trench fever, Clinton re-joined his unit on June 9th 1917 and for the next four months fought in Belgium at Broodseinde Ridge. The Belgium campaign at Broodseinde Ridge was particularly bloody and some idea of the horror can be gained from the official history of the battle on October 1917, when in just one bloody day, 6, 500 Australian troops were either killed or wounded and 25, 000 Germans were too with a further 5,000 taken prisoner. One of the most tragic days during the war, as told by history… "The assault was timed for 6am on Oct 4. As luck would have it, the German Command had planned an attack for precisely the same time. At 5:20am, as the Australian troops lay in shell holes under a steady drizzle, heavy German shelling came down to be followed 10 minutes later by a trench-mortar bombardment. Approximately 1 in 7 Australians were hit. The survivors could do nothing but wait stoically for their own barrage which, punctually started at 6am on the ridge. The Australians scrambled up and moved forward. Simultaneously, lines of German infantry rose in front of them. For a second, the opposing troops were immobile, staring at each other only 30 metres apart. The Australian Lewis gunners fired first, then German soldiers broke and few survived the Australian's bayonet onslaught." Clinton was killed in action in Broodseinde Ridge in Belgium on that very day in 1917. He was buried at the Tyne Cot War Graves Cemetery in Belgium. There’s a headstone in the Allora Cemetery that marks the life and death of Clinton. His parents lie near. Today we remember and admire the courage of all Australian Defense personnel both past and present and the contribution that they have made and continue to make to the values we hold dear. Lest We Forget.

HOME GAME FIXTURE

MEN'S Men's Capital League

Annerley F.C. VS Mt Gravatt 8:30PM Coach: Russel Mapri Coach's Corner! with Russel Mapri This season certainly hasn’t started how I would have hoped, with an abundance of injuries and suspensions that has made my job harder than expected. On the positive side, our losses have only been by one goal and we have competed- if not dominated, every game to date. One element is missing though and hopefully with extremely positive, structured and well-oiled training sessions this week, we will turn the corner against one of the competitions heavyweights, Mt Gravatt. This game means a lot to me, not only as I was a Mt Gravatt junior, but the fact that we are going out on the pitch today, we will play in honour of the ANZACS. Lest We Forget. I am extremely confident that our change in structure for this game will create a turning point in the season for our top team. GO ANNERLEY!

The City 1's and 2's recorded great wins on Friday night. City 1 defeated Holland Park Hawks 3-0, while City 2 overcame Mt Gravatt 3-2. The Capital 1 and reserves put in spirited efforts against Moggill, but unfortunately lost 4-3 and 1-0 respectively. The City 3's had a nil all draw away to North Star, while the City 4's lost 3-2 to The Gap.

WOMEN'S Women's City League 1

Annerley F.C. VS Eastern Suburbs 4:00PM Coach: Michael Fahey Coach's Corner! with Michael Fahey Everyone loves a local derby, and this week sees the City 1 team square off against our nearby rivals Easts - take 2, after our washout. We are coming off a good win over Taringa last week and this week will be another tough match. It's good to have a couple of players back in the team that stepped up to play BWPL the last few games, and we have a little bit of extra motivation as taking the points today will leap frog us to 2nd on the ladder. It should be a great match!

Previous Women's Results... Whilst our BWPL side had a bye last week, our other three Women's teams continued their season. Our City 1 side ran riot against ladder leaders, Taringa Rovers, scoring 6 first half goals to win 7-2. Our City 4 team had a very tough 6-0 loss away from home against UQFC. The City 5 side sit two points clear at the top of the table after a convincing 4-1 win at North Pine.

Line Up E. Purton (C) K. Solomon (GK) K. Linsley T. Weckert R. Richardson N. Apolony A. McKay Z. Argeros H. Mearns C. Morton M. O'Connor S. Pantelas M. Rejtano J. Samphier

The thought of starting the season in a new team scared me so much, but everyone has made me feel so welcome and I’m so glad I decided to play this year! Go Annerley!

A.F.C PROFILES

You'll never walk alone. Full name: Tamara Eileen Ambrose Nickname(s): Tammy, Tammy-too, Apple Current Annerley team: City League 1 Preffered position? Somewhere along the back line. Favorite jersey number? 3! Has always been my lucky number and I had it passed down to me when a close friend was injured. Greatest footballing achievement? Being selected by NSR for a scholarship in America. Most embarrassing footballing moment? Not going to America because I chickened out. What do you remember about your first ever coach? He had a shiny bald head. Confession: I didn't know how to spell bald. Pre-game rituals/superstitions? Jumping up and down three times just before the game starts to pump myself up. Worst habit? I am an ultimate nail biter. Favourite quote? As a lotus flower is born in water, grows in water and rises out of water to stand above it unsoiled, so I, born in the world, raised in the world having overcome the world, live unsoiled by the world. - Buddha

Full name: Alexander Potts Nickname(s): Potts, Pottsy, Pottstown, Potts and Pans, Gaz, and anything redhead related Current Annerley team: Capital 1 Reserves Most embarrassing footballing moment? Would either have to be going through puberty as a captain of my U15 team and having my voice break multiple times during matches while yelling to/ at my team, or the one own goal I’ve scored. Worst habit? On the football pitch: getting caught in two minds, off the football pitch: …nail biting? If you could trade places with a famous footballer for one day who would you choose? Why? Would always have been Steven Gerrard, captaining Liverpool FC would be amazing! So Jordan Henderson now I guess, for the same reason. Favourite Annerley goalkeeper? Would have to be the reigning Reserves Player of the Year!
