From the Supreme Master DEAR BROTHERS AND FRIENDS,
This past March, I had the privilege of representing the International Fraternity on two unforgettable trips overseas. The occasions were remarkably moving, and they underscored the breadth and the depth of impact that AEPi is making Foundation Annual Report in the world. The first trip was the annual leadership mission of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. As you may know, AEPi was admitted Alumni Accolades as a full member of the Conference of Presidents this past January. Comprised of the 50 most established Jewish organizations in the world — including ADL, AIPAC, B’nai B’rith, the Jewish Federations, JNF, the entire Conservative, Orthodox, and Reform movements, and the other entities that have defined the Life’s Paths American Jewish community for more than 150 years — the Conference crafts national and international policy for the Jewish people across the globe. During the Conference’s leadership mission to Madrid and Jerusalem, Andy and I were received as full partners at the table of international Jewish leadership and our views were actively sought on the most pressing issues confronting the State of Israel and the Jewish people. In Madrid, we met with King Juan Carlos, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, and other national and local leaders. In Jerusalem, we met with President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the IDF senior command. It was a heady display of the influence of the Conference and especially of its leader and our Brother and Executive Director of the Conference Malcolm Hoenlein. During our second trip to the United Kingdom, Andy and I conferred charters on AEPi’s newest chapters: Upsilon Kappa Alpha at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and Upsilon Kappa Beta at Leeds University in England. These events occurred in conjunction with our second annual European Regional Conclave, which saw over 100 Brothers from England, Scotland, France, and Israel — 10 campuses in all — come together to develop their leadership skills and learn about the inner workings of the Fraternity. Like their counterparts in North America, these young men are leading Jewish life on their campuses. For example, of the eight AEPi groups in the United Kingdom, AEPi Brothers are the presidents of their campus Jewish Societies and the President of the Union of Jewish Students — the governing body for Jewish students in the United Kingdom and Ireland — is also a Brother. Make no mistake, AEPi has become a global movement that is transforming the lives of thousands of undergraduate Brothers and thousands more alumni Brothers. All of this AEPi is doing, while at the same time giving our Brothers the best friends of their lives and memories to last a lifetime. None of these wonders could occur without our many benefactors who donate generously so that AEPi can continue to deliver one of the finest examples of Jewish Brotherhood in the world. Whether you are an alumnus or a student, a partner agency or an AEPi friend, as you read this issue of The Lion, and as you learn about the superb programming put forth by our Foundation, I hope you will consider participating in as great a capacity as you possibly can. AEPi has given each of us so very much; let us not hesitate in making an investment in the future of our Fraternity and our people.

“Developing the future leaders of the North American Jewish community.” When I first joined the fraternity in the Fall of 1999 at the University of Central Florida, this was the recently adopted tag line of Alpha Epsilon Pi. Nearly fifteen years have passed, and today Alpha Epsilon Pi is recognized throughout the world for “Developing today’s leaders of the global Jewish community!” A few short months ago, we kicked off the beginning of Alpha Epsilon Pi’s Centennial year. As we gathered in New York City to celebrate the first century of our fraternity, we were reminded of our Founders, a band of eleven Jewish student leaders at NYU, who had the vision to create something that has proven to pass the test of time. As we each reflect on this momentous milestone, I encourage each of us to think about the truly fantastic evolution that has taken place throughout AEPi’s history. In the beginning, Alpha Epsilon Pi was founded to be a fraternity for Jewish men seeking the best university experience. Decades later during the Vietnam War era, as the existence of the fraternity movement itself was called into question, our alumni were faced with the mortality of our beloved fraternity. Our visionary leaders made the strategic decision to rededicate our mission and purpose, and as many of us are familiar with the outcome of the story, Alpha Epsilon Pi indeed has become the premier international Jewish Fraternity. With more than 180 chapters and 9,000 student members on campuses through North America, Europe, and Israel, our Founders could never have dreamed of the impact Alpha Epsilon Pi makes on the world each and every day. As we look forward to what the future has in store for Alpha Epsilon Pi, we remain steadfastly dedicated to providing the best-in-class leadership development and educational opportunities to our undergraduate Brothers. After all, Alpha Epsilon Pi is no longer a fraternity for Jewish men, or even just a Jewish fraternity…today, Alpha Epsilon Pi is the premier international leadership network for young Jewish men! As you review the annual report of The Alpha Epsilon Pi Foundation, we have much to celebrate. With newly established programs such as the Michael A. Pi was admitted into the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. AEPi’s membership into the world’s most prestigious assembly of Jewish leaders marks one of the largest milestones that the Fraternity has ever accomplished. This monumental achievement will allow Alpha Epsilon Pi the opportunity to form partnerships with the most influential Jewish organizations worldwide. The Conference of Presidents is comprised of more than 50 Jewish and pro-Israel organizations which influences policies for the Jewish community around the world. organizations and today’s Jewish youth. “This is recognition by the Conference member organizations of the need to engage future leaders of our community and to give them a voice in our deliberations,” Conference of Presidents Chairman Robert Sugarman and CEO Malcolm Hoenlein said. “Without the dedication and contribution of our Brothers during the last 100 years, we could never have been considered for Conference membership,” Alpha Epsilon Pi Executive Director Andrew S. WHEN RANDY GOLD (University of Georgia 1994) and wife Caroline began to start thinking about having kids, they asked their doctors for Jewish genetic testing they thought they were taking the necessary steps toward family planning. Though they were aware of Jewish Genetic Diseases and sought help from their doctors, neither knew what they should be screened for. “We thought we were more informed by being screened, but even our Jewish doctors did not know what we should be tested for,” Gold said. Both received results showing no risk of Jewish Genetic Diseases. Randy and Caroline’s first child was healthy and they expected the same for their second. Shortly after their second child Eden was born, they noticed that she wasn’t meeting her development milestones. At 15 months, Eden could not roll over or lift herself up. Seeking help from physical therapists and eye surgeons, they were left with inconclusive answers and even more questions. After a neurologist ordered an MRI and other tests, the family was referred to a geneticist who wanted to test Eden further. On August 25, 2009, Eden was diagnosed with Mucolipidosis

Eden’s legacy will be to solve the problem of Jewish Genetic Diseases.” Type 4 (ML4), a neurological disorder resulting in cognitive impairment, severe visual problems, physical debilitation, and shortened life expectancy. Devastated by the news, the Golds were left wondering how their proactive genetic testing could have left such a large oversight. The two then learned that Randy was tested for only two genetic diseases while Caroline was screened for only eight of the 19 known Jewish Genetic

Diseases. Approximately 1-in-4 Ashkenazi Jews carry at least one mutation for the 19 known Jewish Genetic Diseases. Although carriers are healthy individuals with no symptoms of the disease, when both parents carry the same mutation, there is a 25% chance that each pregnancy may be affected with the disease. After receiving such a startling revelation, the two felt an obligation to rasie greater awareness within the Jewish community. The Golds felt that to really accomplish their vision, it was necessary to make screening accessible for anyone, at any time, and to provide more complete and accurate information than patients might be able to get from their doctors. “Our goal was to reduce the occurrence of Jewish Genetic Diseases globally,” Gold said. With the help of the Marcus Foundation, Randy and Caroline were able to access resources through Emory University and a team of geneticists to create a saliva based testing program with the ability to reach a larger audience. “Every day we reconcile something that could have been avoided,” said Gold. “Eden’s legacy will be to solve the problem of Jewish Genetic Disease.”

A pproximately 76% of the Jewish young adult population has not been tested for common genetic diseases. C arriers without symptoms can unknowingly pass on genetic diseases to their children. P rice of a JScreen test is $99 with most health insurance policies and often costs much lower, depending on provider. T est is first-of-its-kind, affordable, at-home option that screens for more than 80 genetic conditions. N o travel involved. The test is sent by mail and genetic counseling is conducted via phone or video conference. J Screen is headquartered in Atlanta at Emory University School of Medicine. The Golds became the catalysts for the launch of JScreen. The national program, JScreen, officially launched in September of 2013 and has already received over 1,000 requests for screening kits. JScreen Senior Director of Outreach Initiatives Karen Grinzaid notes that “JScreen strives to spread awareness of Jewish Genetic Diseases and make the process as easy as possible for anyone to get screened.” Through its website, JScreen allows anyone to request their own screening with ease. Individuals can simply log onto JScreen.org, and request a kit. The maximum cost for those who have medical insurance is $99 for the basic test. “You don’t have to go anywhere to use JScreen,” JScreen Outreach Coordinator Hillary Kener said. “We reach people who are not being reached by traditional means.”
“We wanted to prevent Eden’s story from happening to another family, and now [she] is saving lives every day.” Once requesting a screening, individuals simply provide a saliva sample and return the kit in the preaddressed envelope to determine if they are a carrier for any of the 19-known Jewish Genetic Diseases. A genetic counselor is also made available to answer any questions about the test results. Rabbi Larry Sernovitz with son, Sam
Ensuring Healthy Leaders for Tomorrow Rabbi Larry Sernovitz (Pittsburgh - 1995) first learned of Jewish Genetic Diseases while an undergraduate AEPi Brother. At the time, his chapter held a Tay-Sachs screening on their campus. Sernovitz was tested and found that he was not a carrier of Tay-Sachs with no idea that there were more Jewish Genetic Diseases. Later in life, when his wife, Becky, was pregnant she was screened for a panel of Jewish Genetic Diseases. Though both Rabbi Sernovitz and his wife were positive carriers, their doctors had never read the test results, instead leading them to believe that everything would be fine. Without having hard copies of their test results during the pregnancy, the Sernovitz’s were unaware of the potential risk that their child would be a carrier of a genetic disease. When their first child, Sam, was born he was unable to suck, swallow, or thrive. The Sernovitz’s contacted their obstetrician for testing and found that their four month old son had Familial Dysautonomia (FD). FD is a genetic disorder that affects the development of nerve cells and sensory functions with little treatment and no known cure. Today, Sam is a social and fun five year old, though because of his FD there is a medical element that holds him back. Although Sam attends regular therapy sessions he still suffers from “crisis” situations, common with FD. The Sernovitz’s strive to spread awareness about Jewish Genetic Diseases, the importance of testing, and keeping a personal record of your own medical history. “As a Jew and also a Rabbi, we have an obligation to get the word out,” Rabbi Larry Sernovitz said. “Developing leadership and leaders is important not only to AEPi but the Jewish community to ensure that our youth and tomorrow’s leaders are healthy.”

Brother Appointed U.N. Representative Stephen N. Zack (Florida 1969) was presidentially nominated to represent the United States at the United Nations’ 68th General Assembly PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS NOMINATED STEPHEN N.
Zack (Florida 1969) as a United States Representative for the United Nations 68th General Assembly. For the assembly, each of the 193 United Nations member countries selected ten delegates to attend their annual meetings. Of the ten United States delegates, five are permanent representatives and five are publically appointed (two from Congress and three from the President). Zack was one of three presidentialy appointed public representatives alongside former

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and State Department Special Adviser Elizabeth Frawley Bagley. A Cuban native whose freedom was taken away forcing his family to flee to America, Zack is very sensitive to the rule of law. At the age of 67, Zack’s passion for law has never wavered. Zack is a Miami based lawyer, former President of the American Bar Association (ABA), and the first Hispanic American President of the ABA, which has a membership of nearly 400,000. Brother Appointed UN Representative (continued) Hispanic American and youngest President of the Florida Bar and has also served as the President of the National Conference of Bar Presidents. Though his career has led to many achievements, Zack attributes his experience with Alpha Epsilon Pi at the University of Florida as central to his career. “Learning to work in a Brotherhood environment is the best way to learn to be successful,” Zack said. Having served as chapter Master for two years while in college at the University of Florida, Zack strongly believes in the importance of AEPi’s impact on team environment and leadership development.

Although the UN’s 68th General Assembly has concluded, each representative serves a year-long term. Currently, Zack acts as both a Senior Advisor for the State Department and serves on both the law and human rights committees of the UN. Serving as a US representative to the UN, Zack has the opportunity to connect with Ambassadors worldwide and play an integral role in conflict resolutions and panel discussions. “The United Nations is a complex organization,” Zack said. “We may not agree with everything that occurs but we must have a unilateral mission.” ✦

Lifetime Achievement Award
Byron Kolitz (Vanderbilt University 1965) and his wife Starr Silver (at right) were recently honored by State of Israel Bonds with its Lifetime Achievement Award. He serves on the board of Congregation B’nai Israel of St Petersburg as the chairman of its Israel Advocacy Committee, and is active in ritual and teaching activities. Byron also serves on the board of the Tampa Bay Jewish National Fund, and is active in other Jewish community organizations.

Ross Friedman (Harvard 2014) at left, son of Tod Friedman (Ohio State 1984), has been signed by the Columbus Crew Major League Soccer team. Friedman recently finished his four year career at Harvard University, setting two school records in career and single season assists and finishing fifth in the NCAA Division I in assists.
Impact of Birthright eJewishphilanthropy featured the impact of Taglit-Israel Birthright trips in an op-ed article written by President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, Keith Dvorchik (Penn State 1989). Dvorchik provides a wealth of information supporting why Birthright is important for the Jewish community and their connection with the State of Israel.
TECH ENTREPRENEURSHIP Pledge Brothers Lee Shapiro and Bruce Barron (Illinois 1977) have both been commended for their success in technology entrepreneurship and venture capitalism. Shapiro, co-founder of 7wire Ventures, recently supplied funding to digedu, a tech-based company focused on transitioning schools from textbooks to technology. Having invested in companies like GrubHub, Barron recently released How to get ahead in business with a short resume for aspiring entrepreneurs and venture capitalist.
RECORD-BREAKING ATTENDANCE Former traveling consultant Jonathan Levin (Sigma Tau - Stanford 2001), founder of Cardinal Trade Group, drew a record attendance at the Sixth Annual Trade Nassau, a businessto-business trade show on New York’s Long Island. Israel Expansion Named one of Forbes’ “30 under 30” in 2011, Tomer Kagan (UC-Santa Cruz 2005) was featured in Israel21c.org for his company’s future expansion into Israel. Kagan is an Israeli-born CEO of Quixey, an internet based search engine for apps. The California based company will be expanding to Tel Aviv for their future Israel branch location.

A Brotherhood Abroad
A summary of the Fraternity’s recent growth and expansion overseas. European Conclave On March 7, 2014, Alpha Epsilon Pi hosted the second annual European conclave in Birmingham, England. The event was a huge success, inviting Brothers from England, Scotland, France and Israel resulting in more than 100 Brothers in attendance. The strength of Alpha Epsilon Pi has flourished overseas, welcoming international Brothers with open arms.
St. Andrews Chartering Upsilon Kappa Alpha chapter at the University of St. Andrews became the first colony in Europe to be chartered on March 5, 2014 in Scotland. Alpha Epsilon Pi began in Scotland over three years ago, building an unparalleled Brotherhood at St. Andrews. THE LION

The first point of contact at St. Andrews, a very prestigious school with over 600 years of tradition, over three years ago was Brother Elliot Miskin (2014) who lead the way in the veil of our international vision. “The power of taking a chance and believing in an idea, above all else, it shows the universality in the ideals of the Jewish Brotherhood,” said Miskin.
Leeds Chartering The Upsilon Kappa Beta chapter, which is comprised of several universities in the Leeds area, celebrated their chartering on March 7, 2014. Marc Cowan (2013), the original Founding Father, had the vision and determination that successfully resulted in the first recognized presence of the
Fraternity in England. Leeds has been the flagship of AEPi in Europe since its beginning. Our Leeds chapter holds the largest membership in Europe and an outstanding presence on its campus. “We became the Fraternity’s newest chapter at an amazing chartering ceremony, held in front of all our European Brothers at the annual conclave. It truly was an honor for us all to be chartered by Elan Carr,” current Master Boaz Goldwater (2016) said. Alpha Epsilon Pi Headquarters has also had four interns from Leeds including Marc Cowan, Aran Clayton (2013), Adam Berman (2013), and Ben Woolf (2013). ✦

Setting a new tradition of their own, Birmingham hosted their semi-annual casino night. Their casino nights have not only raised money for philanthropy, but also impacted the Greek presence among the Birmingham student community.
London showed true Brotherhood this year, being a center for international students, universities and diversity, they hosted Brothers from all around the world throughout the year. Rapidly growing in numbers, our London chapter is becoming quite vast.

In the spirit of Jewish Brotherhood, the Brothers of Upsilon Kappa DeltaNottingham held a Hamentashen bake sale for Save a Child’s Heart. With great success they raised hundreds of pounds while feeding members of the local community.

In November 2013, seven Brothers from the Aleph chapter took part in the ELEM 10K run in Holon, Israel. The chapter raised over $700 from generous donors in Israel, the U.S. and Belgium. More than five different countries and four continents are represented in the diverse chapter.

MANCHESTER
In the wake of natural disaster in the Philippines, Brothers from Manchester reached out to International Headquarters stressing their concern for those in need. In just two hours the Brothers were able to raise over £85 and continued to help raise funding.
Brothers at Liverpool were invited to the lighting of the menorah in downtown Liverpool. Chabad Rabbi Shmuli Brown, his wife Tzivia, Pro Vice Chancellor of Liverpool University Michael Hoey, Minister of Parliament for Liverpool Luciana Berger, and AEPi Executive Director Andy Borans were all in attendance for the Hanukkah celebration.
Since its founding last year, Warwick has made a huge impression amongst our European chapters. This past semester, Warwick held a hike-a-thon, where Warwick Brothers traveled to Amsterdam. Brothers traveled over 400 miles with help from friends and supporters, raising over $3,000 setting a new record in England! Brother David Ben Linderman (Upsilon Kappa Eta 2015) shared their success on Facebook, “Typed ‘£1810 to dollars’ into Google. This is what I got back: $3,003.15. Let’s keep this going!”

ARIZONA Upsilon Alpha
The Upsilon Alpha chapter enjoyed immense success in hosting its first full scale philanthropy event: “AEPi’s Hollywood Nights.” Hollywood Nights was a four-day long competition between the 13 sororities on campus, challenging them with engaging events. The Upsilon Alpha chapter also enjoyed a heartwarming semester in regards to Judaism. Aside from the weekly Chabbad and Hillel Shabbat dinners that the chapter frequently participates in, many of the Brothers joined Chabbad Rabbi Yossi Winner on the University of Arizona Mall to light the Hanukkiah in front of a large percentage of the campus’ Jewish population on the sixth night of Hannukah.
ALBANY Alpha Nu
Since their founding in Fall 2011, the Alpha Nu colony has made great strides toward their ultimate goal of chapterhood. Last semester the colony accepted ten new Brothers to their quickly expanding colony in the midst of an eventful semester. On the AEPi day of service on November 10th, the chapter worked together to make over 250 sandwiches which were donated to the homeless. Their continued efforts to better themselves and those around them have shown their worth. On April 20th, the Alpha Nu

colony will be receiving chapter status at their chartering ceremony. BENTLEY Psi Beta
On April 24th, Psi Beta will host a concert entitled, “Music 4 Boston”. The concert will benefit the victims of the Boston bombing and feature three upand-coming bands. All of the money raised will be donated to the Boston One Fund, who will donate the money to victims of the bombing that need help paying off various medical expenses. Bentley University is located in Waltham,
The Brothers of the Phi Kappa colony at Colgate University, Blue Diamond Society (BDS), had an extremely successful philanthropic semester during the Fall of 2013. In one week alone, the underground colony managed to raise over $10,000 on two different fundraisers. During Parents Weekend on October 25th, the Junior Brothers of BDS led the charge in planning and implementing a 5K & Fall Festival that raised over $4,000 for brain cancer research initiatives. Five days later, the Sophomore Brothers spearheaded a benefit concert on Halloween night which raised nearly $6,000, all of which was sent to UNICEF to aid in their efforts in the Philippines. CALIFORNIA STATEPOLY-SLO Sigma Omega
This past fall, Sigma Omega-Cal Poly SLO found success at the California Poly Greek Awards ceremony. The chapter was awarded with Outstanding Academic Success, Outstanding Membership Development, Outstanding New Member Development and exceeded the average Cal Poly All Men’s GPA.
CONNECTICUT Upsilon Kappa
Currently the Brothers are gearing up to volunteer at Huskython, an 18-hour dance marathon held annually at University of Connecticut. Huskython is a yearlong fundraising effort that raises funds for the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. There are currently three representatives from AEPi on the management team for Huskython and AEPi is currently the top fundraising fraternity and the sixth overall contributor with $9,600 raised. CORNELL Beta
The 2013 Fall Semester marked a turning point in the recent history of the Beta Chapter at Cornell University. At the Centennial Convention the Beta Chapter was honored with many awards, including ESPONDA level recognition for raising an unprecedented $10,477 for the seven official philanthropies. The chapter has surpassed many expectations by housing 26 brothers at Thurston Manor, executing a 4-week pledge program, and replicating their Splash Bash success from last year. CUNY–BROOKLYN COLLEGE
Phi Theta
The Phi Theta Colony at Brooklyn College has grown from a mere six brother colony to an astounding 21 members over the course of three semesters. While growing at unprecedented rates,

This year, Delta Rho celebrated their 18th year on Drexel University’s Campus. Between new and exciting endeavors such as Jewniversity, and their traditional events including the Jewish Life Carnival, co-sponsored by Hillel and Chabad, the chapter was proud to hand out 26 bids in Fall 2013, with a 100% acceptance rate. To celebrate 18 years on campus, the chapter hosted a gala that included a community service event with the Jewish Relief Agency, followed by a luncheon at the famous Beth Shalom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. The chapter stands at 100 Brothers today. EMORY Epsilon
The Epsilon chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi currently has over 100 brothers. Each brother features the qualities and traits that AEPi was originally founded on: perseverance, humility, mutual helpfulness, faith, and honesty. The chapter works together with Emory Cares Day and various other charity programs in a greater effort to give back to the University and the greater Druid Hills area to create a well-rounded experience for all of their Brothers.

Phi Alpha
Florida Atlantic’s third annual chili cook off philanthropy was a tremendous success. The event raised roughly $8,000 and all of the proceeds were donated to the Save A Child’s Heart foundation. Throughout the semester the Phi Alpha chapter has continued its success, by accumulating 2,345 hours of community service. These exceptional contributions to the community are what make the Phi Alpha chapter at FAU an admirable, diverse, and well respected organization on campus. Phi Alpha has also strengthened its Jewish identity by participating in the national event known as Shabbat Across AEPi. ILLINOIS Delta
This past fall the Delta Chapter at University of Illinois - Urbana/ Champaign initiated a pledge class of 34 and are currently a 128 member chapter. The chapter held the first of what will hopefully become an annual event: AEPi Presents Stretch for a Cure, a philanthropy yoga event, which raised nearly $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The chapter has planned a multitude of Brotherhood, philanthropy, and social events for the spring semester. As always, Delta is continuously strengthening the Brotherhood, improving the new member development program, and bettering the chapteralumni relationship.
MINNESOTA Mu Upsilon
NORTH TEXAS Mu Gamma
At the beginning of this school year the Mu Upsilon chapter moved into a larger house, allowing the chapter to host larger events and allow more Brothers live in. Last semester the chapter built a large electric Menorah to publicly celebrate Hanukah. This semester the Brothers organized community members to make 250 sandwiches for the homeless. To improve communication efforts, the chapter created a new webpage at aepiumn.com and have released their first newsletter for parents and alumni.
The Mu Gamma Colony teamed up with Brothers from the Gamma Deuteron Chapter at The University of Texas to help a family in El Reno, Oklahoma that had their barn severely damaged by the horrific tornadoes that tormented Oklahoma in the Spring of 2013. For their philanthropy event this year the chapter raised $1,500 in one day as part of the North Texas Sit-In. All of the proceeds from the event were donated to the Save a Child’s Heart Foundation.
MIT Mu Tau
Over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, the Mu Tau–MIT chapter went on a ski retreat to Mont Tremblant, about an hour north of Montreal in Canada. The Brotherhood spent days skiing and enjoying Shabbat at the Mont Tremblant Chabad. In the evenings Brothers made delicious meals from scratch and planned out the chapter’s spring rush, to begin in early February. ROCHESTER Rho Nu
On December 7th, the Rho Nu chapter hosted Shave-a-Part to Save a Heart in our campus center. After many Brothers participated in No-Shave November, they put up a white board and offered to shave hair to help raise money for Save a Heart. Brothers shaved their beards, arms, and even heads for donations, raising a total of $562 from the event.
TEXAS Gamma Deuteron
Aaron Liener (Gamma Deuteron - University of Texas at Austin 2014) found a worthy cause, collaborated to find sponsorship, and led 18 Texas Brothers along with AEPi Brothers from various chapters to volunteer with the Field of Teams organization in El Reno, an area of Oklahoma devastated by tornadoes. AEPi also brought Shabbat to a unique location, the Brothers lit candles and made Kiddush and Hamotzi in a hotel room in the town’s Best Western. After Shabbat dinner, the group settled in for Brotherhood activities and Divrei Torah, led by Adam Maslia (Chi Omicron - Charleston 2011). Brothers spent many hours along a significant stretch of I-35, worked on the farm from sun up to sun down, and sacrificed their weekend to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Whether in Oklahoma, Colorado, New York, Israel and beyond: there are Jews willing to help rebuild communities harmed by natural disasters.

NORTHWESTERN Tau Delta
OHIO Omicron Upsilon
The Tau Delta chapter at Northwestern University was proud to induct a pledge class of 30 new members this January 12th. The weekend after induction, the Brotherhood traveled to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin for its first ever ski trip. For beginner and experienced skiers alike, the trip was a great time and successful way to create a strong sense of Brotherhood early on in the pledge program. The chapter now holds over 100 Brothers.
This past October the Omicron Upsilon chapter participated in an event held by the local Hillel for the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation. The goal of this event was to collect DNA samples from volunteers to be registered into Gift of Life’s database. Kevin Feinberg (Omicron Upsilon - Ohio University 2016) was just recently matched with a 30 year old woman with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Kevin is extremely grateful of the opportunity to save the life of someone in need and will travel to Washington D.C. on February 10th for the donating procedure. The chapter is very proud of Kevin for sacrificing his time for the procedure and admires his dedication to helping those in need.
PURDUE Pi Upsilon
The Pi Upsilon Chapter has been busy gearing up for their 60th anniversary reunion which will take place March 28th - 30th. Their Brothers are actively involved in the Purdue community, including the Hillel Student Board and the leadership of honor fraternities for majors ranging from business management to aerospace engineering. The chapter is looking to improve its strength even more this semester and set up a large campus event in the fall to support our International Philanthropy aepi.org

Gamma Chi
This month has been very eventful for the brothers of the Gamma Chi Chapter at the University of South Carolina. The semester kicked off with a bang for the Brothers of the Gamma Chi chapter at the University of South Carolina. They were visited by AEPi’s Executive Director, Andrew S. Borans (Phi Tau-Florida State 1980) kick starting a memorable weekend in Charleston for AEPi’s South Region Conclave. The various events, speakers, and presentations over the weekend had monumental impacts on the chapter. Brothers were happy to leave Charleston as a stronger, prouder Jewish Brotherhood. The weekend was capped off with an insightful visit from our Supreme Master Elan Carr (Chi AlphaBerkley 1990) where the chapter discussed the mission of AEPi and how they can continue to embrace it moving forward. It is with great pleasure that we would like to announce that AEPi has been officially recognized by the IFC on the SUNY Oswego campus. The chapter’s hard work paid off and has been welcomed with open arms. Their Brothers are looking forward to a new pledge class this semester and growing the chapter. The chapter will be able to participate in Greek week for the first time alongside all the other sororities and fraternities on campus. TORONTO Tau Omega
At midnight on November 7th, 2013, the 100th anniversary of the founding of Alpha Epsilon Pi, Tau Omega initiated 11 brothers, the first new brothers of AEPi’s second century. With this class, the chapter also reached a historical high of 36 active brothers, and will continue to build on this milestone in the winter semester’s rush. Currently, Tau Omega is working on a chapter wide initiative to overhaul their website, aepitauomega.org. The chapter looks forward to welcoming Brothers from around the world to Toronto for this summer’s convention.
UCLA Xi Deuteron
Brother Avi Oved (Xi Deuteron - UCLA 2015) has served as the Internal Vice President of UCLA’s student government. Throughout his term in office, Avi’s office has been featured every week in the school wide newspaper. As a proud member of AEPi, one of Avi’s platforms is strictly pro Israel. Over the course of the next two weeks, Avi’s office will be primarily focusing on shutting down a divestment bill that has been proposed to council by an Anti-Zionist student organization. Hopefully, Avi and his wonderful staff can work together to shut down this bill. Xi Deuteron was a driving force in Avi’s vice presidential campaign, and plans on being an integral player once again in the abolition of this upcoming divestment proposition.

For the second straight year, the Tau chapter was ranked the top fundraising fraternity on Vanderbilt University’s campus for Oct. 18th’s Lights on the Lawn concert. The chapter raised over $8,000 with proceeds benefiting the Mary Parrish Center for Victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence. The Brothers at Vanderbilt also raised enough money to sponsor one apartment for the women and children at the Mary Parrish Center. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Tau

As the Centennial comes to a close, there is no better time than to reflect back and look ahead, on the Alpha Epsilon Pi Foundation’s progress and success. As a result of your earnest support, this fiscal year, which ended December 31, 2013, this has once again been the best annual campaign in history. Over the past year our Fraternity has celebrated many milestones. For example, we have a 188 chapters and colonies, celebrated our Fraternity’s Centennial, been inducted into the Conference of Presidents, and raised over $1,800,000 dollars during the 2012 – 2013 campaign. We could not think of a better way to end Alpha Epsilon Pi’s 100th year than with these unprecedented results. As we begin this new chapter in our Fraternity, it is important for us to keep setting our goals even higher. With your continued support and dedication we believe AEPi will continue its success into the next 100 years. SHABBAT ACROSS AEPI is an initiative that honors the
fraternity’s establishment by celebrating Shabbat together with chapter Brothers around the world on AEPi Founder’s Day each year. 128 chapters participated last year.

ISRAEL AMPLIFIED is a program that AEPi began in 2003 with support from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation. This conference brings together fraternity and sorority leaders from across the community to discuss Israel engagement, and develop action plans to bring those initiatives back to their campuses. Last year’s program hosted nearly 126 participants from nearly 70 campuses, representing 49 fraternities and sororities.
Four full-time JEWISH AND PHILANTHROPY PROGRAMMING STAFF members are exclusively dedicated to working with each campus’s Jewish Identity and Philanthropy Chairmen to ensure meaningful programming within all AEPi Chapters.

The Alpha Epsilon Pi Foundation’s goal every year is to subsidize as much of the Fraternity’s educational, leadership and Jewish identity programming allowable by law, which helps keep chapter dues low. The money raised through the 1913 Society and other Alpha Epsilon Pi Foundation initiatives go directly to individual Brothers and chapters through scholarships and programming grants. HOW DO UNDERGRADUATES JOIN THE 1913 SOCIETY?
The 1913 Society is an annual giving club where any undergraduate who donates $19.13 or more to the Alpha Epsilon Pi Foundation is a member of the 1913 Society for that fiscal year.

Jewish Baseball Players:
Leaving a Legacy
STEVE STONE, KENT STATE 1969 Former Major League Baseball pitcher, 1980 Cy Young award winner, and sportscaster for the Chicago White Sox, Steve Stone, recently joined the founder of JewishBaseballPlayer.com in the production of a Jewish Baseball Player art series. This project will educate the Jewish population of Jewish Baseball history and support many philanthropic charities. How did you get involved in the Jewish Baseball Project?
While in Chicago, Greg Harris, the founder, showed me a picture from the old African American leagues of all of the living players that was signed in 1944. It was terrific and thought it was a wonderful idea and a piece of baseball history. I thought it was a good idea but it wouldn’t work without Sandy Koufax. There’s not many things that can turn into heirlooms, but this transcends baseball. What was the process like in convincing Sandy Koufax to participate in the project?
We were slowly getting some players to agree to do this, but we both knew that pretty much the great player of this entire project was Sandy. You couldn’t very well have a poster of great Jewish players, or in my case, sometimes adequate Jewish players, without having THE LION

Sandy Koufax. When I spoke with Sandy his first inclination was to decline. I said, “Look for guys like me who grew up idolizing you, and patterning my behavior and career after yours, you’re a very important part of Jewish baseball history. This is something that will never be done again, because a lot of people that will be in this painting will be
dead in the not so distant future.” We don’t want to see our history extinguished. Sandy said, “Steve, I want to tell you. I would never do this except for you. If you ensure me that this is all above board then I will do it.” Was the fact that AEPi was the Jewish fraternity the reason you joined at Kent State?
It wasn’t a choice of any other fraternity or AEPi, the choice was AEPi or no fraternity. I thought, I’ll give this a try. I liked the guys. I liked the idea of leaving the dorm and moving into the frat house and that’s what happened and I stayed the whole time. We had a lot of fun. What advice would you give to our undergraduates or young alumni that are aspiring for careers in sports or broadcasting?
Follow your passion. If you are very fortunate in life you’re able to make a living at your passion. All of us have at least one or two of them. I think you end up with a much happier life if it’s a worthwhile profession, which is one that gives you the opportunity to enjoy yourself on a daily basis and actually produce some money to live, then you have to work very hard to get it. I’m not a giant and with 14 years in minor and major league baseball, the secret was that I couldn’t allow aepi.org

I felt that if I worked hard enough that eventually I would come out on top. It wasn’t a Hall of Fame career, it wasn’t the greatest career, but it was pretty good. This is my sixth decade in professional baseball, both as a player and professional broadcaster, and they still pay me to come to the ball park and to do something that I would do for free. If you can say that at the end of your life then you’ve probably had a great life. I’ve loved just about every minute of it. ✦

Pam Bacharach
Supreme Seamstress For 40 years, Pam Bacharach, wife of past Supreme Master David Bacharach (Old Dominion 1966 – z”l), has been known as the official AEPi seamstress. From making banners for chapters to felt banners for all major milestones, Pam has done it all. When called to make the flag that would fly high above Park Avenue during the 100th anniversary she was ready to take on the task. The final product was a 12x18’ flag that took 36 yards of blue nylon, 6 yards of gold and about 100 hours to complete. “It was what I call a work of love for AEPI who has given so much to me, David and Jonathan (RIT 2009),” Pam said.
