YESHIVA STUDENT ATTACKED IN MONSEY A. Moeller

At least three people will face hate crime charges for their alleged involvement in the robbery of a Brooklyn yeshiva student visiting Monsey earlier this week. The three thugs had intended to target a Jewish person, Ramapo police said on Tuesday. The 19-year-old victim was struck on the back of the head with a doublesided knife, Ramapo Police Captain Brad Weidel told the Advocate. According to Capt. Weidel, the individual was specifi-

New Hempstead has found itself up in arms over the fate of Yehivas Ohr Torah. The Yeshiva’s building has been declared unsafe and “unacceptable” by the Hillcrest Fire Department at a recent Board of Trustees meeting. The Fire department first noticed the lack of safety after attending to a boiler room fire near the yeshiva’s mikvah. The firefighters claim the original owner built the building illegally around ten years ago without village approvals or permits, and it has been added to since then. Mr. Emanuel, the yeshivah's lawyer told the Advocate “We’re working co-opera-

Eli’s father R'Moshe Yosef died tragically as he heroically attempted to save tively with the town officials to fix these problems." The fire Department said there has been no adequate inspection of the plumbing or electrical wiring or an architect review of the plans, and they worry for the safety of the children. THE GLUTEN DEBATE Going gluten-free seems to be all the rage now (or at least the trend is on the rise). What it involves is eliminating any ingredients derived from glutencontaining substances, such as wheat, kamut, spelt, barley and rye. But is a gluten free diet right for everyone? Is it even a healthy diet? For people with Celiac disease it could be a serious concern. Cecont. Page 9

THE ADVOCATE February 9, AS WE GO TO PRESS Iran working on US-range missile Israel - Iran was working on developing a missile with 10,000 km range that would put America in reach of a potential Iranian attack, Strategic Affairs Minister and Vice Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Thursday. According to Ya’alon, the missile was based on a solid fuel propellant and would have been able to significantly increase Iran’s offensive capabilities. Last month, a mysterious explosion rocked an Iranian missile base near Tehran where Iran was working on developing this long range missile. Ya’alon also said that Turkey is helping Iran bypass the sanctions that have been imposed on it in recent months. According to the vice prime minister, who was in the United States last week for talks on Iran with senior officials from the Obama administration, Turkey was helping Iran circumvent the sanctions by allowing it to use its banking system. Ya’alon said that the Israeli government was committed to stopping Iran’s nuclear program “in one way or another.” “We need a credible military option. The Iranians understand the West has capabilities, but as long as the Iranians don’t think that the West has the political stomach and determination to use it they will not stop,” Ya’alon affirmed. “Currently they don’t think that the world is determined.”

eshivah Ohr Torah in New Hempstead is trying the best they can to keep their building up to code. But it seems like every time a yeshiva in Ramapo tries to operate safely, they get held to a double standard. The fire department is enforcing safety codes that event he East Ramapo public schools do not live up to. With the recent report that came out on the safety of New York State’s aging public school buildings, Rockland’s school district, East Ramapo seems to have their own problems with safety. In fact, out of the 23 buildings open, all of them violated at least one code or another. It is well known that these buildings are old and their sprinkler systems are not required to operate, or in some cases, non-existent. Anyone who sends their children to public schools wants to be sure the buildings are safe. Parents of yeshiva students are no different. The safety of the children is the number one priority. The yeshivah is being held a higher, double standard of regulations. The safety enforcement in the public schools should be at least as strict if not more so then a small yeshivah building.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Advocate:

This letter is in response to an excellent article on mental health you printed a few weeks back which dealt with a very current and serious issue—that of bullying in the schools. The article presented the subject in a very professional, informative, analytical and comprehensive fashion. You defined the term “bullying”, where it takes place, which children are victimized and why. You enumerated the symptoms to be aware of and when to seek professional help and also gave concrete advice to parents how to react to the victimized child and also to parents whose child who is labeled “the bully”.

In addition, the article offered timely information on guiding school age children in forming friendships and forming healthy relationships with others at a young age, a skill which will impact their lives into adulthood. I have taught in many Yeshivas (boys’ and girls’) and bullying does unfortunately exist. I personally have verbally, as well, as physically, aborted such actions. Many juvenile bullies were not “rehabilitated”, they grew into adults that now abuse and “terrorize” their spouses, children and other relative co-workers or any one they meet that might tolerate such behavior.

In other words, it is the obligation of parents and educators to stop this disease in its tracks. Do not believe for one minute that a bully, if left to his own devices, will outgrow this condition. It may go into remission, but may well surface upon the heels of matrimony. Moreover, bear in mind that the bully, no matter what his age, is never happy with himself! Seek out the services of therapists that are equipped to handle and heal this manifestation of poor self esteem.

BAR MITZVAH cont. from page1 ach. Moshe Yosef was an exceptional role model to an entire generation of Ohr Somayach's students. His exceptional bitachon, simchas hachayim and infectoius love of every Jew was contagious. Now his son Eli now arrives early at Ohr Somayach each morning following in his father’s footsteps. He recites kaddish and then has a study seder with a talmid of the yeshiva, Haggai Abramowitz, before beginning his school day. Now that he has reached the milestone of his Bar Mitzva he is gratified that he could daven for the amud each day and further perpetuate his dear father’s memory. The talmidim at Ohr Somayach decided that they wanted to celebrate Eli’s Bar Mitzvah in a special way and hosted the Friday night seudah in the Yeshiva with all the talmidim and the extended Reichenberg family. Typically after the first two speeches at a simcha most guests would prefer that there

be no more. This Friday night, there were many brief inspiring addresses by talmidim of the Yeshiva! Moshe Yosef's past Rebbeim yiblc't Rabbi Yochonon Wosner Shlit'a and Rabbi Avraham Braun Shlit'a also spoke followed by Eli and his family. Each speaker highlighted a different quality of the niftar at the conclusion of the seuda there was not a dry eye to be found amongst the assembled. The talmidim presented Eli with a beautiful kiddush becher and a framed picture that they had taken of him in front of the Aron Hakodesh of Ohr Somayach's Bais Hamedrash Undoubtedly, there were many Bar Mitzvha’s celebrated this past Shabbos. However, the Bar Mitzvah of Eli Reichenberg undoubtedly has a special place in shomayim. May he follow in his dear fathers footsteps and be a source of great nachas to his dear mother Mrs. Ruth M. Reichenberg and to all of Klal Yisroel.

ATTACK cont. from page1 someone who has been the victim of verbal hate crimes because of my faith, I know all too well the devastating impact that such attacks can have. In my life, they have strengthened my resolve to fight against those who use hate as a weapon by promoting tolerance and understanding. Now, as a Councilman, I feel obliged more than ever to speak out when such incidents occur.” “On February 7, 2006, six years ago to this very day, I stood before the Rockland County Legislature for the first time to support a piece of legislation proposed by then-Legislator David

Fried that took aim at hate crimes, and promoted tolerance.{ “A hate crime against one group of people is a hate crime against all people,” I stated that night.} Police said it was calls to 9-1-1 that gave them the jump on the alleged robbers. One suspect was picked up on the street, while two were arrested trying to drive away. All three of the arrested men were being held on $100,000 bail, the woman, who apparently acted as a get-away driver, on $75,000. The four are due back at Ramapo Court on Friday.

Ramapo Councilman Friedman Statement of Hate Crime in Ramapo A resident of our town was brutally attacked simply because of his Jewish faith. Fortunately, his attackers were apprehended shortly after, and today I witnessed their arraignment in Ramapo Justice Court. Hate crimes can take many forms- they can be physical, they can be emotional, but all leave an everlasting mark on an individual persecuted on the basis of their religion or skin tone. Hate crimes also leave a stain on our society; they are reminders that although we may change our laws, much work remains to be done to change our hearts. As a Jewish person, and as a Ramapo Councilman, I find these attacks to be abhorrent, un-American, and criminal. More than that, as someone who has been the victim of verbal hate crimes because of my faith, I know all too well the devastating impact that such attacks can have. In my life, they have strengthened my resolve to fight against those who use hate as a weapon by promoting tolerance and understanding. Now, as a Councilman, I feel obliged more than ever to speak out when such incidents occur. On February 7, 2006, six years ago to this very day, I stood before the Rockland County Legislature for the first time to support a piece of legislation proposed by then-Legislator David Fried that took aim at hate crimes, and promoted tolerance. “A hate crime against one group of people is a hate crime against all people,” I stated that night. I was 19 years old when I said that – the same age as one of the perpetrators in last night’s attack. The difference between us is that young man lacks the understanding that our differences ought to be understood and celebrated, not rejected because of stale stereotypes and private prejudices. It is my hope that incidents like these reignite in our town and in our homes a discussion – not only of the day’s events, but of the underlying issues that cause them. Most importantly, we need to work to educate young people about diversity and tolerance for all. In his time, W.E.B. DuBois wrote of the “veil” that separates those who look different from one another. There still exists a veil that some people choose to place over others out of ignorance and bigotry. The time has come for all of us to come together and resolve among ourselves to lift off that veil once and for all.

OHR TORAH cont. from page1 5,282-square-foot building that once had four bedrooms and 4½ baths. Many steps must be taken to determine the verdict of the building, but in the meantime Mayor Lawrence Dessau instructed the village attorney to take steps to make sure the Yeshiva is vacated. The lawyer for Ohr Torah, Ira M. Emanuel, and the Mayor agree that the school has installed proper fire safety equipment since buying the building last March, but the Hillcrest fire chief and other officials argued that that’s not enough to guarantee the safety of the students.

All parties involved hope to resolve the matter soon. Mr. Emanuel told the Advocate “We’re working co-operatively with the town officials. We hope to obtain the necessary permits as quickly as possible in order to resolve the matter. We plan on submitting a formal site- plan, and then obtain the zoning approval. The whole process should take three to four months, and in the meantime we will continue to cooperate with the village as well as they have cooperated with us”. But until then, the future of Yeshivas Ohr Torah remaining on Rt. 306 hangs in the balance.

CONSUMER ALERT: BEWARE OF MORTGAGE SCAM ARTISTS Senator Carlucci Exposes Loan Modification Company Targeting Struggling Spring Valley Homeowners As mortgage abuse continues to skyrocket in the midst of the worst foreclosure crisis in history, Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) on Thursday will join Spring Valley homeowners Rosemarie Jean-Baptiste and Maxene Sainvil, the recent target of a ploy by a loan modification company that promised to adjust their home mortgage payments in return for upfront cash payments of $600 per month for 3 years. The company, Loan

Modification Division, using deceiving images disguised as government seals, also failed to disclose a disclaimer that such services were provided free of charge by the State, as required by law. Under New York State law, companies like Loan Modification Division are 1) prohibited from taking any up front frees in connection for activities related to modifying mortgages, and 2) require these companies to provide a disclaimer and information about

the availability of free state-funded services in their advertisements. With the onset of the subprime lending crisis, the nationwide jump in foreclosures and mortgage defaults has triggered a sharp rise in the number of predatory scams targeting financially-strapped homeowners. In the case of Ms. Baptiste and Mr. Sainvil, the couple, living on a limited income while supporting their four children and family relatives in Haiti, currently face the prospect of foreclosure.

Disaster damage leads to rate hikes

2011 was a year of natural disasters in the United States, leading home underwriters, such as Allstate Insurance, to raise rates for consumers.

Watching the ratio A combined ratio measures an underwriterÕs expenses against the premiums it is paid; a ratio of 100 is break even; for 2011, U.S. insurance companies are projected to have paid out $1.16 for every $1 paid to them by homeowners, the fourth consecutive year of high ratios U.S. homeowners inurance combined ratio

These requests are for what is known as an "area variance." Every zoning code sets out requirement for the ab minimum square footage of a lot, the portion of the lot that can be taken up by construction, how far off the property line you need to build and the mathematical relationship between the gross square footage of the structure and the size of the lot. If you want to build differently than these measurements and formulas permit, you need an area variance. Area variances for one to three family homes are exempt from an environmental review. Use variances, however, require an environmental review. A use variance is far more significant, and more difficult to obtain, than an area variance. While an area variance seeks permission to built to different dimensions, a "use variance" seeks to build a type of building or use the property in a way not permitted by the zoning code. An example of a use variance would be operating a retail store in an area zoned exclusively for residential uses or operating an industrial site in an area zoned exclusively for retail stores. To obtain an area variance, an owner needs to convince the zoning board that,

on balance, their variances will not damage the surrounding neighborhood and are the minimal variances required. To obtain a use variance, an owner must prove that the property is otherwise unusable economically. This is a simplistic explanation of the relevant legal standards, but the difference between the two types of variances is striking.

While many variance application solely involve an individual adding on to their home, sometimes the variances are just one portion of a larger development proposal, which will require hearings before both the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. Every municipality in New York is required to have a Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals and property development requires approval under the zoning code of the closest level of government. for example, if you live in both the Town of Ramapo and the Village of Spring Valley, it is Spring Valley's zoning code that would apply.

AUSTRALIA HAS TROUBLE WITH ERUV PLAN For five years, members of St Ives’ Orthodox Jewish community have applied - and failed - to seek permission to build an eruv - or symbolic barrier - around a vast tract of the suburb. Now the matter has landed in the NSW Land and Environment Court for a ruling. “It’s a virtual area, which enables young Jewish mothers, elderly Jewish people to get out and about on the Jewish festivals,” says Vic Alhadeff, chief executive officer of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies. About 3000 people observe the Jewish faith in St Ives - about 13 per cent of the local population - but only a small group observe the Orthodox elements of the faith. The plan has angered many locals who fear the structure will be unsightly, disrupt a push to have poles and cables placed below ground, and will upset the existing social harmony by creating a “religious enclave”. In the latest push, the council received more than 1500 submissions; most of them opposed, and rejected the proposal after a heated meeting last August.

OLDEST JEWISH TOMBSTONE FOUND INTACT IN GERMANY

Effurt, Germany - A tombstone discovered in Germany dating back to the thirteenth century this past January during a construction project holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving Jewish grave stone. The marker, which dates back to the year 1259, was discovered in the central German city of Effurt, the capital city of Thuringia, located sixty two miles southwest of Leipzig. The tombstone bears the name “Frau Dolze” who is described as the daughter of “Herr Asher”. A total of fifty eight gravestones and gravestone fragments have been discovered in Erfurt, a town that was home to a significant Jewish community which was established in the late eleventh century and is seeking inclusion as a Unesco World Cultural Heritage Site. Erfurt’s Jewish community was eradicated in 1349 during a series of pogroms, initiated on the pretext that Jews had poisoned the city’s wells. More than one hundred Jews were killed, in the attack. Any survivors were expelled and the Jewish quarter was burned down. While Jews resettled the city less than ten years later, all Jews were ordered out of Efurt in 1458 and the Jewish cemetery was destroyed, with many of its tombstones being recycled into building materials. Municipal barns and a large grain storehouse were built on the site of the cemetery which was located outside Erfurt’s Jewish quarter, at the Moritz Gate, which is now known as Grosse Ackerhofs Gasse. Erfurt’s Old Synagogue, which was constructed in the eleventh century is considered to be the oldest synagogue that is still standing in Europe and is currently used as a museum. Among the items housed there is the Erfurt Treasure, a cache of coins, gold and jewelry that was hidden in the wall of a house during the 1349 pogroms and was discovered in 1998.

FRIED FISH: NO HEALTHFUL GAINS Eating fish the right way may help you and your brain. Research at the University of Pittsburgh looked at the cognitive benefits of eating fish, following elderly people for 15 years, tracking the effects on memory and learning. Dr. Cyrus Raji is a researcher and medical resident at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Mercy Hospital. "Individuals who consumed baked or broiled fish on a

weekly basis scored higher on tests for working memory. Fried fish, on the other hand, does not confer this benefit." Dr. Raji suggests eating fish the right way can sustain brain structure, reducing your risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The study was presented at the Radiological Society of North America meeting and supported by the National Institutes of Health.

SECOND HAND SMOKE IN CARS IS A RISK FOR CHILDREN Texting while driving, speeding and back-seat hanky-panky aren’t all that parents need to worry about when their kids are in cars: Add secondhand smoke to the list. In the first national estimate of its kind, a report from government researchers says more than 1 in 5 high school students and middle schoolers ride in cars while others are smoking. This kind of secondhand smoke exposure has been linked with breathing problems and allergy symptoms, and more restrictions are needed to prevent it, the report says. With widespread crackdowns on smoking in public, private places including homes and cars are where people encounter secondhand smoke these days. Anti-smoking advocates have zeroed in on cars because of research showing they’re potentially more dangerous than smoke-filled bars and other less confined areas. The research, from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was released online Monday in Pediatrics. The study is based on national surveys done at public and private high schools and middle schools. Students were asked how often they rode in cars while someone was smoking within the past week. The most common answer was one or two days. The smoker could mean other kids or parents; the study didn’t specify. A CDC fact sheet suggests even small amounts of secondhand smoke can be risky. “There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke,” the CDC says.

Overall, 22 percent of teens and pre-teens were exposed to secondhand smoke in cars in 2009, the latest data available. That figure declined gradually during the decade, from 40 percent in 2000, the study found. But still, the numbers of kids still facing the risks “is certainly problematic,” said CDC researcher Brian King, the study’s lead author. “The car is the only source of exposure for some of these children, so if you can reduce that exposure, it’s definitely advantageous for health,” King said. The CDC advises parents to not allow smoking in their homes and cars, and says opening a car window will not protect kids from cigarette smoke inside. Measures banning smoking in cars when children are present have been enacted in a handful of states and proposed in several others. The study authors say similar bans should be adopted elsewhere.

Following the introduction of legislation for a minimum-wage increase in the Assembly, Sen. Jeffrey D. Klein, D-Bronx, has introduced companion legislation in the Senate Assembly bill (A.9148), introduced by Assemblyman Keith Wright and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and Klein's bill (S.6413) propos-

es a 17 percent increase, raising the state's minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour. They also aim to tie minimum wage to the rate of inflation. Both bills are currently referred to the Labor Committee. "New York is failing to live up to its tradition as a progressive leader as long as this state's minimum wage re-

mains stagnant," said Klein. "Living on $290 a week is virtually impossible in this state, yet that's what thousands upon thousands of New Yorkers are struggling to do each day." Klein hopes the bill will be supported by other members of the Legislature. "I believe we can do better as a state and as a society."

Education is a crucial vehicle to learn about oneself and others. Education provides the tools of how to deal with differences that naturally emerge while living together, and help build bridges in our midst. The Holocaust Museum & Study Center will continue to do its part by teaching about the Holocaust and emphasizing the importance of tolerance and respect. We believe that every one of us can make a difference. The Holocaust Museum & Study Center appeals to all citizens to look out for each other and to show respect of their fellow residents. GLUTEN

CONT. FROM PAGE 1

Department of Adult Medicine liac disease is a chronic digestive disorder that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. When a person with Celiac disease consumes gluten, the protein destroys the lining of the small intestine, leaving the intestine unable to absorb nutrients. The person can experience a wide array of symptoms on the road to malnutrition, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle cramps, fatigue, depression and a skin rash. The only solution for this condition is to adopt a strict gluten-free diet. Any cheating and the gluten could further damage the small intestine. To many, the thought of a gluten-free lifestyle is intimidating and depressing. The diet can immediately impact a person's social life; children must deal with being unable to partake in the Shabbos or birthday parties that occur throughout the school year, while a young adult may be frustrated by limited options The first step to eating a gluten-free diet is to avoid all wheat, rye and barley grains, as well as their derivatives. It's essential to read labels carefully to ensure these flours and grains aren't an ingredient. Unfortunately, wheat flour is commonly used in baking, as the gluten serves as an elastic thickening agent that gives baked goods their light and airy texture. That means that most breads, cereals, pastas, crackers, cookies and cakes fall on the restricted list. Dieticians are divided on whether oats are acceptable on a gluten-free diet. While in the past Celiac disease sufferers may have been warned off oats entirely, new research indicates that small amounts of oats may be acceptable. However, be careful -- oats may be in close contact with wheat during their journey to a store shelf, meaning there was a chance for gluten contamination. Gluten is found in some less obvious sources as well, including beer, candy, processed cold cuts, soups, sauces, soy sauce and salad dressings. Gluten is also often present in, vitamins, medications and toothpaste. Again, all labels must be read with a careful eye, and when in doubt, customers should contact manufacturers to ensure that a product is safe. If one of these products comes with a "gluten-free" label, it's not exempt from the investigative treatment, either; restrictions about what can earn the "gluten-free" label are fairly new and in some cases still being worked out. So what foods can be safely consumed? Dieticians often recommend shopping along the perimeter of a supermarket, where fresh fruits and vegetables can be found. Eggs, milk, unprocessed cheese. meats, and dairy are also safe to consume. There are some gluten-free finds to be had in the middle of the store as well, including unflavored potato chips, popcorn, plain nuts, packaged fruits and veggies, and sugar. And all grains aren't forbidden; rather, those eating a gluten-free diet can still enjoy grains that are naturally gluten-free, including corn, potato flour, quinoa, rice and soy. Eating out with Celiac disease involves working with restaurants to determine which ingredients are safe and where substitutions can be made. Since many gluten-free products are sold in health stores, some people have come to the conclusion that eliminating gluten from their diets is a healthy move. These people may put themselves on a gluten-free diet, but doctors caution that no research shows the benefits of gluten-free eating to anyone but those suffering

Department Medicine Letters of toAdult the Monsey Family

FAMILY MEDICAL CENTER Medical Center

Dear, Monsey Family Medical Center.

M

y family and I have been using the Monsey Family Medical Center for almost eight years. I am writing this letter to thank Mrs. Rivka Gutman who works in the “call room” for her patience in explaining two issues that I honestly did not understand. I called the Center one day asking for my husband’s results. Instead of just telling me to have my husband call, she patiently explained to me the HIPAA regulations and that it could be a violation of HIPAA to give out information to another family member. She asked if I wanted her to fax to me the form that both my husband and I could fill out adding each other as responsible to receive results. I could hear the phones ringing off the hook in the background, but she asked me can I help you with anything else? As a matter of fact, I said, I have another question. Why do I have to see my primary care physician (PCP) first before going to the podiatrist? Why can’t I just see the podiatrist? Again, she gave me all the time in the world and explained that this rule has nothing to do with the Medical Center, but is the policy of my insurance company. If I had recently seen the doctor and complained about my foot and he/she could not help me, and I called within a reasonable amount of time and asked for a referral to the podiatrist, then there is no issue seeing the podiatrist. But, if I had not seen the doctor for a while, and did not have my foot problem as a symptom, then I need to come in and see the doctor. She also said that it is the perfect time for me to have a yearly physical for preventive care. I listened, and as a matter of fact, I am thankful that I did, because my sugar level was a little high and I am now seeing Hanna Raice in the Department of Nutrition Counseling. Why am I writing this long megillah? Maybe someone else had these questions, and now I helped the person. Maybe someone will now go for a yearly checkup just to make sure everything is OK. Thank you Mrs.Guttman, and all the staff at the Medical Center for helping to make a visit to the doctor pleasant and convenient. Yasher Koach! I also would like to add that the renovations are beautiful and we cannot wait to see how the dental department and all the other departments will look when the construction is finished. Sincerely, Mrs. Halpern from Celiac disease. Those who have adopted the gluten-free life may think there's no need for research; they can tell that they feel better and possess increased stores of energy. That's likely because processed wheat products cause a spike in blood sugar levels, and the resulting drop makes a person feel lethargic. Rather than going completely gluten-free, those people may just want to eliminate processed foods. Many with gastrointestinal discomforts might self-diagnose themselves as having Celiac disease, but doctors ask that they not begin eating gluten-free until they receive a firm diagnosis. Eating glutenfree will affect the levels of antibodies in the blood that reveal celiac disease, and the current thinking is that people shouldn't begin eating Celiac-free until they absolutely have to. For one thing, just because a gluten-free food product is in a health food store doesn't mean it's completely healthy. Some gluten-free foods are higher in fat and contain higher amounts of sugar, which aids those with Celiac disease who may be underweight and malnourished from years of not receiving proper levels of nutrients. Going gluten free is not for everyone, the best idea would be to discuss your diet with your doctor or allergist to find out what is right for you.

P R O J E C T O H R , D E PA RT M E N T O F B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H Emotional or Behavioral Illness

THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF STIGMA AND WHAT WE CAN DO by Naomi Franklin, LMSW PROJECT OHR

A recent joke notes, “Half of America is on anti depressants…. and the other half ought to be!” While this may be an exaggeration, it does indicate the lessening of the stigma towards the illness of depression.

Department of Behavioral Health

It is important for all of us in the community to be aware that someone suffering from a behavioral health disorder can not “just snap out of it”, any more than a physically ill person could snap out of their diabetes. Medical and behavioral treatment can reduce or eliminate symptoms and improve functioning.

Seymour Kushnir, MD ADULT PSYCHIATRY Allan Flaggman, MD ADULT PSYCHIATRY

Similarly, just as we all might know physical ailments like diabetes, colitis, etc, can flare out of control at times despite medical treatment, so too an emotional illness may sometimes be challenging to control. Many may be okay with taking medication, but avoid talk therapy. Research shows that talk therapy together with medication when necessary works better than either one alone when medication is called for. Sadly, some stereotypes still persist. Many of our fears have been borne out of ignorance and need to be done away with. For instance, behavioral illness has no relationship with intelligence, and there have been people with a near genius I.Q. who have suffered mental disorders. A person suffering needs our understanding, not our fear or anger. Almost all people have the capability to be violent, and people with behavioral health issues do not have the corner on that market. Every human being deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. As important as it is for a person with an emotional disorder to get the proper treatment, it is equally important for family members to get support and overcome any shame they may feel. behavioral health illness, from mild to severe, is unfortunately common enough that most friends or neighbors may know or have known someone else who has suffered from this problem.

Zvi Weisstuch, MD CHILD PSYCHIATRY

The emotional energy it takes to keep the condition a secret is better spent ensuring that both the identified patient with the emotional disorder, and family members, gets the best treatment possible and emotional support respectively to help them deal with their stress from the situation. And just as someone with a physical ailment may need extended rehab or treatments, so too the family needs to be committed to investing the time and energy it takes to give various treatments a fair try, which can range from weeks to many months, or even years. It is so very difficult living with and /or caring for a family member with a disability or illness, and can be stressful. If you know someone battling a behavioral health disorder or who is living with a family member who is, do your part and extend your kind words and understanding to them to lighten their burden and lend them support and encourage them to get professional help if necessary!

We now know that behavioral health disorders are not due to personal weakness, and in fact have a biological basis. These illnesses can be treated like any other health condition with a number and variety of evidence based pharmacological and behavioral treatments. However, some people still feel there is a stigma that exists. This can have many harmful effects, such as:

• People may try to pretend that nothing is wrong • Families may feel so much shame they won’t help a family member get necessary treatment. • People who would benefit from treatment refuse to seek it • Family members who may need support don’t get needed help • Rejection by family and friends •

CONGRESSMAN ELIOT ENGEL

REP. ENGEL URGES SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION TO HELP VETS FIND EMPLOYMENT Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) supports President Barack Obama’s Veterans Job Corps initiative to help returning veterans find employment, a plan he advocated in his State of the Union address. “The unemployment rate has declined for five straight months, to its lowest mark since January 2009, but the unemployment rate for veterans stands at a whopping 13.1%. This has to change. While the private sector has added almost four million jobs in the last two years, we need to find ways to do more for our brave men and women who served their country. They made great sacrifices for us and the least we can do is make their transition back home successful,” said Rep. Engel. “The President outlined several very good ideas in his State of the Union, and I call on my colleagues in Congress to act on them now.”

Among the details of the Veterans Jobs Corps are: · New incentives to hire veterans as first responders – This expands on the already-successful Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) programs.

BREAK FREE FRO

M FOOT PAIN!

·Putting veterans to work preserving and restoring America – This would develop a conservation program to put up to 20,000 veterans to work rebuilding America in such ways as, restoring habitat, protecting cultural resources, operating facilities, etc. ·Promoting entrepreneurship for future small business ownership – This training program would help veterans learn the fundamentals of small business ownership, and aid them along the way to becoming part of the nation’s jobcreating backbone.

“This is great news for these Central New York farms,” said Senator Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture. “We need our farmers to thrive if we’re going to have a strong and growing economy in New York. These federal grants will help ensure that our small farms and independent producers have the resources they need to bring their products to market and continue to drive economic growth in their region and across the state.” “Our goal is to get local meat to local consumers,” said Paul O’Mara Chairman of the New York Beef

Santor um wins make Romney's path to nomination much har der Mitt Romney's carefully plotted path to the Republican presidential nomination is now

a long, unpredictable journey that could last months. The next major tests are primaries in Arizona and Michigan on Feb. 28, where Romney has been heavily favored. A week later, 10 states vote on March 6, Super Tuesday, when the former Massachusetts governor was hoping to all but clinch the nomination. Not anymore. With victories Tuesday in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, Rick Santorum became a threat. The sweep by the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania exposed long-held voter qualms about Romney, and conservatives are likely to take a fresh look at Santorum. "I don't think this changes the title of front-runner (for Romney), but it underscores the fundamental problem he has with the party base," said Larry Sabato, the director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. "They just don't trust him, and they don't connect to him personally. He has serious, serious problems." Arizona and Michigan have strong conservative bases. Santorum's faith-and-family message could appeal to them. "After yesterday, I think everything's in play,"

said Jim Haynes, the president of the Phoenix-based Behavior Research Center, a

nonpartisan market research and polling firm. Even in Michigan, where Romney's father was governor in the 1960s, the race could tighten. "There's an opportunity for Santorum to give Romney a black eye," said Douglas Koopman, a professor of government at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. Super Tuesday's most closely watched race is likely to be Ohio, the kind of diverse swing state that a general-election candidate historically has to win. Romney faces the same conservative suspicion there that he does elsewhere. As a result, "It's a volatile state," said Paul Beck, a professor of political science at Ohio State University. Super Tuesday also will provide opportunities for Santorum, Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives. Paul is pushing hard in caucuses, while Gingrich is eyeing Oklahoma, Tennessee and Georgia. Gingrich has Southern roots, having represented an Atlanta-area district for 20 years. His only victory so far came last month in neighboring South Carolina, where his angry-man, populist appeal propelled him to a big win.

But Gingrich is no Southern shoo-in, said Merle Black, a professor of politics and government at Emory University in Atlanta. Santorum has strong appeal to conservative Christians, who are influential in the Southern GOP. "There are a lot of issues where Santorum would be seen as more consistent than Gingrich or Romney," Black said. "And with Gingrich, you always have questions of judgment." A bigger question in the states ahead involves Romney's political judgment, or, as Sabato put it, "his arrogance." Early Tuesday, Romney's political director, Rich Beeson, sent a memo to the news media, trying to downplay the day's importance. It was classic Romney, full of facts and wellreasoned arguments. No delegates were being selected Tuesday, Beeson argued, and besides, "there is no way for any nominee to win first place in every single contest." All true, and it's also worth noting that the Colorado and Minnesota caucuses attracted about 65,000 and 50,000 voters, respectively, in states where general-election turnout reaches millions. In short, not many people voted Tuesday, and no convention delegates were chosen. But Romney's carefully calibrated logic ignored a maxim of modern political life: Psychology matters, and the media and the political world saw Tuesday as a big deal. Santorum's sweep changed the conversation completely. Romney's wins last week in Florida and Nevada are no longer Topic A.

MATTRESS MATTERS

BY RON GOLDBLATT OWNER RG BEDDING, MONSEY, NY The best place to buy from is a place that you know will be in business 20 years from now. Some stores come and go. You want that store to be around in the event you have problems with your bed. Manufacturers usually rely on the store to handle preliminary warranty claims. You also want to buy from a salesman you can trust. He must be very knowledgeable of all the different types and feels

The industry refers to the sizes above as: Single 2/9 or 2'9". 2'9" equals 33". Twin 3/3 or 3'3". 3'3" equals 39". 4/0 or 4'0" equals 48". 4/6 or 4'6" 4'6" equals 54". Queen 5/0 or 5'0" 5'0" equals 60". and so on.... Coil count is determined on how

of mattresses so he can recommend the perfect one for you. A person replaces his mattress, an average of once every 15 years. Yes, they can last that long if you take care of them. A dishonest salesman will try to push the expensive style more than the less expensive because he will have a larger profit margin. A good question for a salesman to ask is "how much do you want to spend?" The salesman can then steer you to a group of mattresses in your budget. You should be able to find the perfect mattress for you in your price range. Next, is to choose the size mattress which will suit your needs. Did you know that a person can change positions hundreds of times a night? You want your bed to accommodate your size, so that you will be comfortable in every position. The various standard sizes are: Single (33X75), Twin (39X75), Three Quarters (48X75), Full or Double

many coils there are to make up a FULL size mattress. Example: A 364 innerspring unit, will have 364 coils in a full size. In other words, if you ask for a 364 unit, you will be getting 364 coils in your full size mattress. If you are buying a twin size, and still ask for a 364 unit, you will be getting less coils in that mattress due to its size. Again, a full size is 54", a twin is only 39". The coil diameter in each spring unit is the same, thus in a 39" width mattress, you will be able to fit less coils across to make 39". A 660 unit, will have 660 coils in a full size. You ask, How do they fit 660 coils into the mattress? The answer is, the diameter of the coil is smaller, and usually the Gage of the wire is thinner. So....you have more steel in the mattress, but it will be a softer feel, due to the decrease in wire gage. You may be paying more, but depending on what type of comfort level you want, you may not get what you want.

845.352.1400

RCDC HOUSING DEPARTMENT The following information is provided to the community by the RCDC Housing Department as a public service

REDUCING DAMPNESS IN YOUR HOME

D

amp homes are often uncomfortable and pose serious health risks. Health risks associated with dampness include illnesses resulting from mold spores, mites and bacteria. Spores and mites may enter your home as a result of dampness. A damp atmosphere is the perfect home for bacteria, mites and spores because it fosters growth. Bacteria, spores and mites can all harm the respiratory system and potentially the nervous system. Respiratory problems are manifest by coughing, sneezing, wheezing and labored breathing. Research has recently indicated that mold can cause depression either because of chronic headaches or because of the type of atmosphere mold generally grows in. (If you suspect you have a mold problem or a potential mold problem due to a damp home, seek confirmation from an inspector or health specialist.) Your geographical area may be a predictor and contributor to a damp home. If you live in a particularly humid or rainy area, your chances of having a damp home increase significantly. Check with your local government office or public library for information on the humidity and rainfall in your town. Damp homes often have an influx of water from the outside because of a leak in the foundation of the home or because of a leak in a window or door. Two key indicators of where water is entering from the outside are water tides on paint or white salt deposits on brick. There are three main tactics for preventing dampness in the home. The first thing you should do is find the

Home Electrical Safety Inspection While only a professional can really say whether the electrical system in your home is safe or not, there are a few things that you can do to see whether you need a professional to come in and do a full blown inspection. A home electrical safety inspection can be done in relatively little time, and give you a good idea of what other steps should be taken. Here are a few things that you should keep an eye out for when you begin doing your inspection. • Check the cover plates. Go through your home and take a look at all the electrical outlets. Each should have a cover plate, and should not be cracked. In fact, take a close look at the receptacles themselves to ensure that they are not cracked either. If you find any that are, replace them as soon as possible.

source of your leak or influx of water. Once you have properly identified the source of your problem it is time to seal the deal. If a window is the culprit, you may need to apply additional rubber caulking to keep out moisture. If your problem lies in the foundation of your home, you may need to seek the help of a construction crew. The next item of business is increasing or improving the insulation of your home. Increasing insulation will require the aid of properly trained individuals, so check out your yellow pages. The last major step in reducing dampness is increasing ventilation (air flow). During the day, you may create a cross breeze in your home by opening windows opposite each other in a room. Beyond these major, necessary steps you may also consider limiting boiling time of water (this releases water in the air), covering saucepans when cooking and discontinuing use of portable gas heaters. If you spot mold or continue sensing a musty, damp feeling in your home seek professional help.

• Check your grounding. When looking at the receptacles take a look to see if they are grounded. As a general rule, plugs that have only two prong slots are not grounded and should be upgraded as soon as possible. To check for proper polarization and grounding of three prong plugs, use a receptacle analyzer. • Test your switches. Flip the switches a few times, and check to see how much play there is. If it seems like there is too much, or if the switch wiggles when you move it back and forth, then you should have it replaced. Another good indicator that you need to replace a switch is if you happen to hear a "pop" when you turn it on or off. • Test any GFCIs that you may have. Just because you have a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) doesn't mean that you don't need to check them. Check them for proper grounding and polarization as you would with any other three prong plug, as well as by pushing the red test button. When you push the red button, the black reset button should pop out. If it doesn't, you need to replace it. • Double check receptacles near water. It is pretty much common sense that a wet receptacle is a dangerous one. Despite this, many times those receptacles that are within arms reach of a water source are often overlooked. Check to make sure that you have a GFCI installed at any receptacle that is near a water source.

Be aware that the codes of some countries, or even states, differ, and you should check with a professional before making any serious changes to your home electrical system. If you have any doubts at all, then call in a professional to do the work for you.
