Ramapo has made some changes to its zoning laws this past week. A number of them highlight the efforts the Town has put in place to increase affordable housing and work with owners that already have property in place. According to Town Councilman Yitzy Ulman, who was heavily involved in these zone changes, the biggest win here is the deal on accessory apartments. An accessory apartment is a separate living unit created within a single-family home and occupied by either a

family member or a nonfamily tenant. Generally, such units are not in sync with local zoning and housing codes, although

THE ADVOCATE February 2, AS WE GO TO PRESS Iran working on US-range missile Israel - Iran was working on developing a missile with 10,000 km range that would put America in reach of a potential Iranian attack, Strategic Affairs Minister and Vice Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Thursday. According to Ya’alon, the missile was based on a solid fuel propellant and would have been able to significantly increase Iran’s offensive capabilities. Last month, a mysterious explosion rocked an Iranian missile base near Tehran where Iran was working on developing this long range missile. Ya’alon also said that Turkey is helping Iran bypass the sanctions that have been imposed on it in recent months. According to the vice prime minister, who was in the United States last week for talks on Iran with senior officials from the Obama administration, Turkey was helping Iran circumvent the sanctions by allowing it to use its banking system. Ya’alon said that the Israeli government was committed to stopping Iran’s nuclear program “in one way or another.” “We need a credible military option. The Iranians understand the West has capabilities, but as long as the Iranians don’t think that the West has the political stomach and determination to use it they will not stop,” Ya’alon affirmed. “Currently they don’t think that the world is determined.”

ith the recent report that came out on the safety of New York State’s aging public school buildings, Rockland’s school district, East Ramapo came out pretty low on the list. In fact, out of the 23 buildings open, all of them were lacking in some safety code. If you do the math you will discover that for the roughly 8,000 children East Ramapo serves. It needs 23 building to operate. Compare that with the North Rockland school district which only needs to maintain 13 buildings to house almost the same 8,000 students. If we consolidate the East Ramapo students into the proportions of the North Rockland school buildings, it would leave ten vacant school buildings. These vacant buildings will save operating costs, and hence, tax payers’ money. These same ten buildings could be auctioned off to the highest bidders. That is of course, if no one protests the sale. The quality of the buildings is much higher in North Rockland than it is in East Ramapo. Consolidation may be a good idea for the school district. Rather than being spread out in 23 aging buildings, take the money from the sale a of a few empty ones, and renovate the old buildings. This should help bring the buildings up to code, and keep the children safe.

Ever since the synagogue was broken into, and we suffered the theft of our dear Torah, so many of you responded so kindly. So many of you called, emailed or spoke to us communicating your care and concern. You followed all of the details of this case, since it affected you personally. Many of you prayed for us, came to our rallies, donated to our new security fund, or just shared in our pain and suffering. It meant a lot to us to know that we have all of you as such wonderful neighbors.

With the marvels of technology – information passed to you in almost real time. Time and space were hardly a hindrance, consequently many of our dear friends who visit Monticello, yet live around the world, were in touch with us, too in real time! I really feel that in every difficult event, there is a silver lining. The silver lining here is how beautifully our dear community came together for this tragic event. For this we most sincerely thank each and every one of you! I would like to add one more point. Thank G-d we have a real superb team of Law Enforcement officers in Monticello. The Police Department, Chief Doug Solomon, its amazing detectives and exceptional officers were outstanding. We really are lucky

Dear Editor, There's an issue that keeps cropping back up no matter how many times we ask them to stop. I'm talking about the fire alarm that the Monsey Brewer fire station rings loudly up to at unearthly hours. A few months back they stopped the alarm and I can't tell you what a relief it is. Living within a few block radius, the alarm is often sounded as early as 6:30 in the morning waking our entire family and late as 11:30 at night so it was so nice being rid of that. Now they suddenly started the fire alarm again but it's even worse. Whereas before

that a small village like ours can have such a great Police Department here. In addition, the various other agencies in the surrounding areas including, the State Police, the Sheriff’s Department, Liberty, Fallsburg and Woodridge Police and the D.A.’s office all worked together in an exemplary way. Also our elected officials all came together in support of this event, as well as our caring news agencies. We have a lot to be proud of and to be thankful for. Thank you so much. there were some days the alarm wasn't blown at all, now they blow the alarm up to 5 times a day. And by day I mean 7:00 in the morning and 10:30 at night. They've repeatedly woken my frustrated tired children up and if i'm on the phone I can't hear what the other party is saying over the shrieking alarms. They have no respect for the people living near the fire house. We live in 2012, we have pagers that the EMS and police departments use to page their workers. Why is the firefighters any different? Is it fair that the whole town has to be disturbed and woken up every time they get a call? They have pagers and that is more

than sufficient to alert them to a call. If that's not enough then perhaps they should get more alert firemen. Can't any town officials stop the fire alarm? In fact I've heard that in many towns in America blowing a fire alarm is illegal but our town has had to put our residents through these annoying earsplitting alarms our whole lives. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Please try to take appropriate action and have this alarm stopped for good. Thank you, BP, Monsey

present from HaShem that helped us find the Torah,” Chanowitz said. “We received a present from the police department, the sheriff and the State Police and all the good people and the politicians and the detectives; all of the people and the community who supported everybody, who came out, as if it was their own loss.” Sullivan County District Attorney James Farrell was also pleased with the recovery of the scroll. “Monticello Police detectives worked tirelessly to recover the Torah and their hard work and professionalism along with the other agencies’ help has resulted in the recovery of this very important sacred document,” Farrell said. The investigation into the theft is continuing.

the Advocate that for many years owners were hesitant about benefiting from the accessory unit, that otherwise could be sold. Now with the zone change, it can be sold, at a reasonable rate. “Its a winwin situation”, says Ulman, who explained that one of the incentives for potential buyers of these accessory apartments is a price cap of about $200,000. “This essentially brings affordable housing to Ramapo.” The zone change is good news for first time homeowners with small families. In the past accessory apartments were being used within the law for rentals only. “Under the new law”, Ulman explains, “the owners would be allowed to sell, where before this, the law forbade it.” The fine print of the new law includes a clause that in order to sell an accessory apartment, property owners must pay a one time fee totaling $1,000. The plan could bring an estimated $50,000 to $75,000 in revenue to the town, officials say. You may remember years back the Bates-Horton development in Monsey was littered with trash across vacant lots, angering residents in the surrounding homes. Well, after a an effort by the town, the plot is cleaned up and looking more habitable. The plan to build affordable housing in the form of 180 new condominium-style apartments —interspersed among

the existing single-family houses is almost finished as is illustrated in the photo on the front page. The new deal in place states that property owners must submit landscaping plans to ensure the uniformity of the development’s appearance and comply with state and town property maintenance laws, according to town officials. After construction is finished at the Bates-Horton site, and the developer makes any needed repairs to the roads, the town plans to take over responsibility for road repairs and plowing. Yeshivas also benefit from last week’s law making. Another new law put in place allows buildings to house students in trailers for up to two years while permanent schools are built on a site, as long as a site development plan is approved by the town Planning Board. The units must first comply with state fire prevention and building codes. The law also means that the dormitory occupancy rate can go from two to four people per room.

YOUR FINANCES Obama Proposes Broad Refinancing For Homeowners President Barack Obama proposed a new program during his State of the Union address Tuesday to allow homeowners with privately held mortgages to refinance at lower interest rates. The program would cover both loans issued by government-controlled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and private mortgage lenders. Congress would have to approve it, a difficult hurdle. “There’s never been a better time to build, especially since the construction industry was one of the hardest-hit when the housing bubble burst,” Obama said. “Of course, construction workers weren’t the only ones hurt. So were millions of innocent Americans who’ve

seen their home values decline. And while government can’t fix the problem on its own, responsible homeowners shouldn’t have to sit and wait for the housing market to hit bottom to get some relief.” A punctured housing bubble was at the center of the recession, prompting widespread foreclosures and leaving millions of homeowners with houses valued at less than their mortgages. Under the plan, any homeowner current on his or her mortgage could take advantage of historically low lending rates. Mortgage rates have been below 4 percent for months. The program would be paid for by a small fee on large banks, senior administration officials said.

Administration officials offered few details but estimated savings at $3,000 a year for average borrowers. It’s likely that millions of homeowners would be eligible, but they would have to seek out refinancing options under the program with their lender. Other government programs allow lenders to seek out potential applicants. About 1 in 4 Americans with a mortgage — about 11 million — are underwater, according to CoreLogic, a real estate data firm. Roughly 1 million homeowners have refinanced through the refinancing program. Government officials had estimated it would help 4 million to 5 million homeowners.

Use variances, however, require an environmental review. A use variance is far more significant, and more difficult to obtain, than an area variance. While an area variance seeks permission to built to different dimensions, a "use variance" seeks to build a type of building or use the property in a way not permitted by the zoning code. An example of a use variance would be operating a retail store in an area zoned exclusively for residential uses or operating an industrial site in an area zoned exclusively for retail stores. To obtain an area variance, an owner needs to convince the zoning board that,

on balance, their variances will not damage the surrounding neighborhood and are the minimal variances required. To obtain a use variance, an owner must prove that the property is otherwise unusable economically. This is a simplistic explanation of the relevant legal standards, but the difference between the two types of variances is striking.

All applications for variances require a public hearing with notice to surrounding property owners. While many variance application solely involve an individual adding on to their home, sometimes the variances are just one portion of a larger development proposal, which will require hearings before both the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. Every municipality in New York is required to have a Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals and property development requires approval under the zoning code of the closest level of government. for example, if you live in both the Town of Ramapo and the Village of Spring Valley, it is Spring Valley's zoning code that would apply. The development process can be complicated and cumbersome, so it is vital any applicant have competent legal and engineering representation. Because of the volume of paperwork involved many applicants also use the services of companies like Construction Expediting, which assist owners with applications, notices, hearing notices and permitting.

WARNING ABOUT NON KOSHER DRIED FRUIT Israel - A statement released on Wednesday warned that dried fruits sold in bulk or sold prewrapped without a kosher certification during the upcoming holiday of Tu Bishvat may contain fruit dipped in artificial flavorings or food colorings made with lard or other pork extract. All fruits and vegetables are kosher by Jewish law, but lard is not. Other meat derivatives used in food manufacturing or preserving may also be non-kosher.

UN CHIEF URGES ISRAEL TO HALT SETTLEMENTS U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon is on a Mideast peace mission aimed at salvaging the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian talks. FORECLOSURE DEAL WOULD GIVE STATES AUTHORITY TO PUNISH FIRMS A proposed settlement to resolve mortgage abuses by top U.S. banks will give states broad authority to punish firms that mistreat borrowers in the future, according to documents on Wednesday. Under the settlement, which states are currently reviewing to decide whether they will join, the states and a separate "monitoring committee" will have the authority to go to court to enforce the terms and seek penalties of up to $5 million per violation. A strong enforcement mechanism could help the states and the Obama administration sell the deal to the public, after leftleaning activist groups have questioned whether the negotiations were too lenient on the banks. States have just a few more days to make a decision, and an announcement of a settlement could come as early as next week, people familiar with the talks said. The settlement, expected to be filed as a consent judgment in federal court in Washington, D.C., will last for 3-1/2 years , according to documents laying out the pending deal's enforcement terms.

NEW CYSTIC FIBROSIS DRUG The first drug that treats the root cause of cystic fibrosis won approval Tuesday, offering a life-changing treatment for a handful of patients with the deadly illness and broader hope for thousands more patients with the inherited disease. About 30,000 Americans live with cystic fibrosis, a disease that causes sticky mucus buildup in the lungs and other organs, leading to infections,

digestive problems and death in young adulthood. The typical life expectancy is about 37 years, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. That means a lot of children are being exposed to the risk of serious injury. Children in this age range still aren't big enough to be safely restrained by car seat belts. Using a booster to position the lap and seat belt properly reduces injury risk by half. The 681 parents surveyed said they didn't use booster seats for a number of reasons, including difficulty getting seats from other parents, and being unable to fit enough seats in the car. Legal pressure clearly helps; parents were far more likely to use boosters if they live in one of

the 47 states that require them for children up to 4 feet 9 inches in height. The most common cause of death in children ages 3 to 14 are car crashes. In this 2005 study, eight children ages 4 to 8 who were wearing only seat belts suffered serious abdominal injuries. Five broke their spine. And four are permanently paralyzed. That sure got my attention. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration spells out the details for safe use of boosters in children ages 8 to 12.

House Votes To Freeze Pay Of Federal Workers Through 2013 The House on Wednesday voted to freeze the wages of federal workers for a third straight year and put members of Congress on record as opposing a boost in their $174,000 annual salaries. Republican supporters said their measure, which would freeze federal worker wages through 2013, would save taxpayers $26 billion. It would not apply to military personnel. The nation's 2.3 million federal civilian workers currently

are in the second year of a wage freeze imposed as part of efforts to trim budget deficits. Sponsors said the twoyear halt in wage increases will save the government $60 billion. Department of Pediatric Medicine Oral thrush is a very common infection in infants that causes irritation in and around a baby's mouth. It is caused by the overgrowth of the yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida albicans. Candida overgrowth can lead to infections, diaper rashes, or oral thrush. According to Dr. Paul Bloom, a pediatrician on staff at Monsey Family Medical Center, “Most people (including infants) naturally have Candida in their mouths and digestive tracts”, Dr. Bloom said. “It is considered normal growth. Mothers are often worried about this condition, but the one thing to keep in mind is that is is natural, and it can be treated,” Dr. Bloom concluded. The amount of growth is controlled by a healthy immune system and some "good" bacteria. If the immune system is weakened, or if the immune system is not fully developed as is the case in infants, the Candida in the digestive tract can overgrow and lead to an infection. Sometimes Candida overgrowth occurs after a baby has received antibiotics for a bacterial infection, because antibiotics can kill off the "good" bacteria that keep the Candida from growing. Similarly, infection can occur with the steroid use. Oral thrush can affect anyone, although it's most common in infants younger than 6 months and in older adults. A baby with oral thrush might develop cracked skin in the corners of the mouth or whitish patches on the lips, tongue, or inside the cheeks that look a little like cottage cheese but can't be wiped away. Scraping the white patches off can cause some bleeding. Many babies don't feel anything at all, but some may be uncomfortable when sucking. Some babies may not feed well because their mouth feels sore. Babies can have oral thrush and a diaper rash due to the same yeast infection at the same time. See your pediatrician if you think your baby may have thrush. Some cases go away without medical treatment within a week or two, but the doctor may prescribe an antifungal solution for your baby's mouth. This medication is usually applied by painting it on the inside of the mouth and tongue with a sponge applicator. And depending on your baby's age, the doctor might suggest adding yogurt with lactobacilli to your child's diet. The lactobacilli are the "good" bacteria that can help eliminate the yeast in your child's mouth.

Which number is more important, top (systolic) or bottom (diastolic)? Typically more attention is given to the top number (the systolic blood pressure) as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease for people over 50 years old. In most people, systolic blood pressure rises steadily with age due to increasing stiffness of large arteries, longterm build-up of plaque, and increased incidence of cardiac and vascular disease. Your blood pressure rises with each heartbeat and falls when your heart relaxes between beats. While BP can change from minute to minute with changes in posture, exercise, stress or sleep, it should normally be less than 120/80 mm Hg (less than 120 systolic AND less than 80 diastolic) for an adult age 20 or over. About one in three (33.5%) U.S. adults has high blood pressure. If your blood pressure reading is higher than normal, your doctor may take several readings over time and/or have you monitor your blood pressure at home before diagnosing you with high blood pressure. A single high reading does not necessarily mean that you have high blood pressure. However, if readings stay at 140/90 mm Hg or above (systolic 140 or above OR diastolic 90 or above) over time, your doctor will likely want you to begin a treatment program. Such a program almost always includes lifestyle changes and often prescription medication for those with readings of 140/90 or higher. If, while monitoring your blood pressure, you get a systolic reading of 180 mm Hg or higher OR a diastolic reading of 110 mm HG or higher, wait a few of minutes and take it again. If the reading is still at or above that level, you should seek immediate emergency medical treatment for a hypertensive crisis.Even if your blood pressure is normal, you should consider making lifestyle modifications to prevent the development of HBP and improve your heart health. Preventive care is a very important ingredient in helping to maintain your good health. Make sure to have yearly checkups. P R O J E C T O H R , D E PA RT M E N T O F B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER (BPD) Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a defined as a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. The instability of BPD often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. Originally thought to be at the "borderline" of psychosis, people with BPD suffer from a disorder of emotion regulation. While less well known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is more common, affecting 2% of adults, mostly young women or by another estimate, 1-3% of the general population. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most controversial diagnoses in psychology today. Some suggest that the name itself, Borderline Personality Disorder, is an inappropriate term for this disorder, or "a misleading label". The disorder has nothing to do with neurosis or psychosis, but rather involves emotional volatility, what one reporter described as "a [very] thin emotional skin". Self-loathing, poor self esteem and suicidality are also part of the profile of BPD.

A person with BPD may feel unfairly misunderstood or mistreated, bored, empty, and have little idea who they are. Such symptoms are most acute when people with BPD feel isolated and lacking in social support, and may result in frantic efforts to avoid being alone. People with BPD often have highly unstable patterns of social relationships. While they can develop intense but stormy attachments, their attitudes towards family, friends, and loved ones may suddenly shift from idealization (great admiration and love) to devaluation (intense anger and dislike). Thus, they may form an immediate attachment and idealize the other person, but when a slight separation or conflict occurs, they switch unexpectedly to the other extreme and angrily accuse the other person of not caring for them at all. A person with BPD often needs extensive mental health services, and accounts for 20 percent of psychiatric hospitalizations. Forty percent of the highest users of inpatient psychiatric services receive a diagnosis of BPD. Many are helped through psychiatric services. However about 1/2 or 46% have repeat hospitalization despite long-term or extended-term care.

While a person with depression or bipolar disorder typically endures the same mood for weeks, a person with BPD may experience intense bouts of anger, depression, and anxiety that may last only hours, or at most a day.

MISCELLANEOUS ATTRIBUTES OF PEOPLE WITH BPD: • People with BPD are often bright, witty and funny. •

These may be associated with episodes of impulsive aggression, self-injury, and drug or alcohol abuse. Self hate, self loathing distortions in cognition and sense of self can lead to frequent changes in long-term goals, career plans, jobs, friendships, gender identity, and values. Sometimes people with BPD view themselves as fundamentally bad, or unworthy. With borderline personality disorder your image of yourself is distorted, making you feel worthless and fundamentally flawed. Your anger, impulsively and frequent mood swings may push others away, even though you yearn for loving relationships.

They may have problems with constancy. When a person leaves (even temporarily), they may have a problem recreating or remembering feelings of that were present between themselves and the other. Often, BPD patients want to keep something belonging to the loved one around .

They frequently have difficulty tolerating aloneness, even for short periods of time.

Their lives may be a chaotic landscape of job losses, interrupted educational pursuits, broken engagements, hospitalizations.

Many have a background of childhood emotional abuse or physical/emotional neglect.

Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) issued the following statement in opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Rep. Engel opposes online piracy, but SOPA goes too far in infringing upon First Amendment rights. Rep. Engel is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. “In its current form, this legislation takes America in the wrong direction. I would vote against it if it came to the full House in its present form. While online piracy is a real problem and must be addressed, this version goes too far. I am pleased to see that the Senate Majority Leader has decided not to send their version to the Senate floor. The House Judiciary Committee Chairman has said modifications are needed. Gillibrand Announces New Bipartisan Iran Bill

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) announced that three of her measures to thwart Iran’s nuclear ambitions and strengthen economic sanctions against Iran are included in the Senate Banking Committee’s new Iran sanctions bill. Senator Gillibrand’s proposals would impose sanctions against those who aid in Iran’s human rights abuses and require companies that trade on the U.S. stock exchange to disclose any sanctionable business activities with Iran to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The bill’s target of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps is based on Gillibrand language in the Iran, North Korea, and Syria Sanctions Consolidation Act of 2011. This Thursday, the Senate Banking Committee plans to mark up and vote on the new Iran sanctions legislation.

“The Iranian regime is becoming an existential threat to the United States and our allies and we must quickly act to enforce a broader set of sanctions,” said Senator Gillibrand. “We must send a clear message that Iran must halt its nuclear weapons program and stop its human rights abuses. If we can isolate Iran and bring greater transparency to any investment being made in Iran, we can help defund the nuclear militarization of one of the world’s most hostile nations.” In testimony today, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper revealed that the U.S. intelligence community believes that Iran is prepared to launch attacks in America and is expanding its uranium enrichment capabilities, which can be used to develop nuclear weapons.

Relative to other oils, canola (made from the seeds of a yellow-flowered plant) and olive oils are rich in monounsaturated fats—the kind that help reduce “unhealthy” LDL cholesterol and boost “healthy” HDL cholesterol. But new research suggests that virgin (and extra-virgin) olive oils—those produced purely by mechanically pressing the oil from olives, with no chemical processing—have an edge: antioxidants called polyphenols. Naturally found in olives (in red wine and green tea too), polyphenols mop up free radicals before they can oxidize LDL (oxidation makes LDL even more damaging to arteries). In a three-week study of 200 men published recently in Annals of Internal Medicine, those who consumed just under two tablespoons a day of highpolyphenol virgin olive oil in place of other dietary fats registered larger increases in “good” HDL cholesterol and fewer markers of oxidative stress than men who consumed the same amount of “ordinary” olive oil, which had a very low polyphenol content. Chemical refining processes remove some polyphe-

nols from “ordinary” olive oils (often labeled as “pure” in the U.S.) and other cooking oils. Bottom line: Virgin olive oil doesn’t just taste better than plain old “olive oil,” it’s better for you too. That said, any olive or canola oil is a heart-healthy choice— assuming you use it as a substitute for (not a complement to) saturated fats in your diet. If cost is a concern, go ahead and use refined olive oil or canola in cooking and save the virgin oil for cases that call for a high-impact fruity flavor (dipping bread, dressing salads, accenting soups).

Permission to print granted to The Advocate Anyone who knows us and is familiar with our way of thinking would quickly agree that we believe that children are the ultimate source for direction about how to parent and how to educate. Yes, that is quite accurate, and now we are delighted to have discovered an enterprise that follows the same perspective. Eric Goldstein established a nonprofit called One World Education in Washington, D.C. His nonprofit organization grew out of a classroom project that he started as a history teacher. Eric wanted primary source writing material that his students could refer to for information about events or issues that abound in the world. His students were not relating well to textbook or other conventional material. Eric realized that young people relate best and learn most from other young people, so he led students to compose firsthand material based upon their personal experiences and reflections. Now children can become One World ambassadors who submit their writing material to benefit others. The endeavor has spawned an annual competitive event for submissions, from which the best are accepted and made available to schools worldwide. A team of teachers process and judge the submissions, all of which must conform to One World writing standards. Absolutely brilliant! Of course it pays for teachers to check out One World and even have students participate as writers or consumers, or else you can just adopt the concept and implement the idea within your own school. Upperclassmen can write material for lowerclassmen to use for information and as a reading or writing source. By the way, upperclassmen can even be third graders who write for beginning readers and writers in grades one and two. There is something special about making use of material created by your own schoolmates. It “feels” more meaningful. It also leads to more collaboration between students across grades and classes within the same school: essentially school community building. Of course material can be shared with others in the larger community. That also stirs up loyal

feelings for what “our fellow students” have created. Sharing between young people has exponential value. There is something phenomenal about child-tochild communication and influence, something that adults cannot imitate or compete with. If you want to get a point across to a child, ask another child to express it. Okay, perhaps that’s a bit exaggerated, but not by much. This phenomenon applies to plenty of other things besides writing. Do you invite people to come to your school to address your students about various issues? We tend to tap experts within a field to share their knowledge and experience. That is well worth it. At the same time, a young person’s perspective on the issue is equally valuable and sometimes more potent. Suppose you wish to raise the consciousness of children about giving to others during their free time. You can host a coordinator of a community soup kitchen to share her knowledge and experience. We suggest that you couple her talk with that of a teenager who personally benefitted from her soup kitchen or a teenager who helped serve food at her soup kitchen, and you’ve got a super duo. The adult can be very engaging, while the teenager will be ultra-influential. Again you have a firsthand source of information and experience, similar to One World’s writing material idea. Now, looking at the bigger picture, let’s suppose you have a schoolwide problem on your hands. Students constantly return from recess or lunch breaks late for class. Bells and buzzers and whistles don’t seem to have much of an effect. Students saunter into class as they care to. Let’s suppose that this plagues every grade except for first grade because they are new to the school and have not learned this bad habit from others yet. Yes, we said, “yet.”

Dictating as adults from above may get compliance, but not earn respect. The best way to crack this habit is by holding a conference with students. You can round up teachers for such a meeting and come up with promising ideas, but know that children will not embrace them nearly as agreeably as when they are pitched by fellow stu-

dents. Yes, round up teachers who have good ideas, but also invite students to join the meeting. Invite their ears and their voices. Listen to their reactions to concerns and ideas posed by teachers and also invite them to propose some solutions. Would you like an expert to join this problem-solving project? Then you should invite a school-age “expert” from another school who can share his or her wisdom. Let her describe her schoolmates’ orderly and responsible return to class following recess or lunch. Let her explain what makes it work right at her school. Is it a rule? Is it a procedure? Is it an attitude? Is it related to how recess time is organized and governed, or is the problem really due to uninviting classroom activities that await students following the break? Use your primary sources housed in the bodies and minds of young people and encourage your children to discuss the issue with the invited guest student. We’ll bet that the most constructive solutions will emerge from that meeting. The bottom line is: kid involvement in kid affairs. Dictating as adults from above may get compliance, but not earn respect. And we are not talking about respect for the adults. We are talking about respect for the rule or procedure that the adult dictated. In other words, no growth will result except that children may learn from us about how not to handle these affairs when they become adults. Yes, children are learning from our every move. They learn our best, and they learn our worst. However, bringing children into the process gives them a sense of ownership and respect for themselves, not just for the idea being proposed. Then if the idea under consideration doesn’t work perfectly, the young co-sponsors will be willing to modify it before deciding to dispose of it. Nothing beats including children as a primary source for their education and upbringing. SUMP PUMPS – KEEPING YOUR BASEMENT DRY Water in the basement can be a family’s worst nightmare. Aside from the financial consequences, standing water can cause structural damage, health hazards, and attract bugs and other critters. A sump pump is a necessity if your basement is prone to flooding in a rainstorm, or if your basement is below the level of sewer lines. However, almost any homeowner that has a below grade basement should consider having a sump pump installed as a precaution, because even an inch of water can do extensive damage. What is a Sump Pump? A sump pump is an electric pump that is installed in the basement of a home and used to pump water out of the basement. Sometimes water is drained into the house’s drainage pipe system and sometimes it is pumped outside. Sump pumps generally work in combination with a sump pit, a hole dug usually in the basement to collect water for pumping outside. Sump pumps are generally electric, but they should have a battery backup system in case the electricity goes out, which is somewhat likely given the circumstances of sump pump use. For this reason, some sump pumps don’t use electricity at all. They use the home’s pressurized water supply. It is imperative that the pump always work, otherwise the sump pit can overflow. If the pump is electric, a backup power supply system is needed in case the primary power system fails. Many sump pumps actually come with built-in backup battery supplies. In this way, the backup can pump water out of the house for several hours even without power. Types of Sump Pumps There are two types of sump pumps: a pedestal or upright style and a submersible style. The pedestal style sump pump sits above the sump pit and is easier to reach and maintain. The submersible sump pump actually goes down into the sump pit itself. This makes it more difficult to reach and maintain, but it is much quieter, and is therefore recommended for finished basements. Submersibles are sealed to prevent electrical short circuits when water collects in the pit. The pedestal sump pump is essentially a motor that is mounted on a small pedestal with a pipe running from the motor down to the bottom of the sump pit. It works much like a toilet. A float is attached to a separate metal rod connected to a switch on the pump. When the basement floods, the water starts to fill the sump pit. As

the water rises, the float rises until it gets high enough to switch on the sump pump. Water is then sucked up through the pipe and into another pipe of hose that leads to your septic system or sewer system. The pedestal sump pump motor is not designed to be under water. On the other hand, the submersible sump pump is just as it says, able to be submersed under water without doing damage to the unit. It does not have a connecting pipe that draws the water out. Instead the water is filtered right through the bottom of the sump pump. The advantage is that the bottom of the pump has a screen or filter that keeps out gravel or debris that could be sucked into the impeller of the pump. The impeller is the device that creates suction. Damaging this ruins the pump. The rising water level triggers this type of pump as well. Submersible pumps are generally more expensive and actually may have a shorter life span due to being in water all the time. There are many high quality pumps out there to choose from. These variations of brands and styles are offered in many price ranges. Depending on the size of the house and the general amount of water that comes into the basement, a professional can recommend the proper size for your home. Sump pumps can also come in cast iron or thermoplastic, which is nearly as strong, but much lighter. Backup Sump Pumps Backup pumps can be battery backup or waterpowered backup. Battery backups operate on 12-volt batteries. Water powered pumps use the concept of suction and are connected to the water system of the residence. Though the water-powered system is more expensive, it could prove to be the more effective solution over time. These types use water pressure to dictate if and when they should start operating, thus eliminating the worry of dead batteries, and can be more reliable. Things to Consider When Buying a Sump Pump When choosing a backup sump pump, or any sump pump, it is important to acquire products from a reliable manufacturer and choose

the right size for your home as it can affect performance of the system. Other important considerations include pump rating, expressed in gallons per hour; water usage efficiency with water powered pumps, (one gallon of water input usually sucks two gallons of wastewater); and floater action, (A backup system should not have electrical parts for the floater. It should be stable and must not easily rub against other parts). Other considerations include covers, alarms, ease of installation, and of course, the warranty. It all depends on the needs and preferences of the user. Properly maintained sump pumps should last anywhere between ten and fifteen years. General maintenance involves cleaning it out and removing any debris that might clog the pump. For submersibles, water needs to be run through it to check it for proper operation.

Though a sump pump is a simple device, it can be the best investment for your home you ever make.
