Third Air Force welcomes new commander by Tech. Sgt. Rachel Waller U.S. Air Forces in Europe Public Affairs Maj. Gen. John Wood took command of the Third Air Force from Lt. Gen. Richard Clark during a change of command ceremony, Sept. 7. In his last assignment, Wood served as Air Mobility Command’s director of strategic plans, requirements and programs, where he was responsible for the force structure planning, programming, doctrine, and requirements for the U.S. airlift and air fueling forces. “Maj. Gen. John Wood’s career speaks for itself: perpetual excellence,” said Gen. The Ramstein Bazaar — a community tradition since 1965, and now hailed as the world’s largest event of its type — is now open! “We are super excited to renew this annual tradition!” said Amy Sands, 2018 event chair. “We’ve got about 130 vendors from countries around the

globe selling unique items like antiques, toys, rugs, wine, and much more. It’s the perfect time to come out with your family and friends to pick up some treasures to remember your time here in Europe, and maybe do some early Christmas shopping.” The Bazaar is one of the most anticipated yearly events on the installation, said Sands, and not just because of the many items on sale.

The Ramstein Bazaar is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. “Don’t forget about the food!” said Sands. “Amazing food vendors from nearly 30 private organizations across our community will be selling lumpia, bratwurst, funnel cakes, and fresh squeezed lemonade, to name just a few.” See RAMSTEIN BAZAAR, Page 7

A unique human being and somebody that we absolutely, positively needed to have to lead our numbered air force into the hearty portion of the 21st century.” As commander of the Third Air Force, Wood will oversee the planning, deployment, sustainment and redeployment of Air Force forces that directly support the combatant commanders during contingency and wartime operations. “John, we just ask that you follow prudent 21st century command forum. It’s simply this, if our successive commanders aren’t quick, smart, and faster than their predecessors, the enemies will win and we will lose,” said Wolters. “John, the only advice Rich and I would like to offer you is if you lead them the Wood way, we’ll have success. We know when you are in command, the Wood way will harvest additional success and peace.” “I happily accept this command. I promise I won’t fail, and I am looking forward to leading [this command]. [Clark] built an all-star team and an all-star cast. I look forward to building upon the visions you had set forth,” said Wood. “It’s an honor to serve in our

I think about my tour here, there are only three things that I am eternally grateful for because I got a lot more than I gave to this command. The three things are: first the opportunity, second the family and third you inspire me.” When Clark first assumed command two years ago, he inherited a component and not a command, said

Wolters. Wolters explained that Clark was responsible for the transformation that morphed a component into a command that is now an organized, trained and equipped headquarters for the good order and discipline for Airmen on both the European and African continents. “He has performed brilliantly. His staff, his Third Air Force warriors have performed brilliantly,” said Wolters. “All the wings under his command had to have the confidence that in the first 48 hours or five days of a potential conflict within the European continent, it would be met with success, not uncertainty, not triumph but absolute, positive victory. And through his exercise and training regime, that was exactly what has happened with the U.S. forces as they operate on the European continent.” As Clark gave his final speech as commander, he thanked his Third Air Force Airmen. “You never quit, never gave up and kept thriving to the finish,” said Clark. “What I do know is that you are the best example of what our country has to offer. I thank you for that inspiration and willingness to always give one more foot. It was my greatest honor to serve you.”

Getting to know the new 86th AW commander by Staff Sgt. Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Recently, Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, sat down with American Forces Network-Kaiserslautern to introduce himself to the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Q:

Out of all of your assignments, not counting this one, which was the coolest one?

run four air bases in four countries, we present a strategic center of gravity that equals no other installation.

A:

First and foremost, we’re an airlift organization. So PROFESSIONAL AIRLIFT is always going to be the marching orders… Whether you’re working in the dental clinic making sure folks are ready to deploy or get out the door, or you’re working in civil engineering making sure the runway is working, that’s a big part of what professional airlift is. When you look at the four bases we run, the second priority is really about those strategic centers of gravity – being a GATEWAY TO THE WORLD able to interface with the folks in Belgium, Spain, and the Azores. That’s a critical part of what we do. My third priority is TAKE CARE OF OUR AIRMEN. Some people say, ‘Sir, that’s just a bumper sticker. The Air Force talks about that all the time,’ and for me it’s a little bit different. I define that as first and foremost giving folks a command climate where they feel like

Prior to coming back to Ramstein to command the 86th AW, the ‘world’s best wing,’ I was out at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, I was the deputy for all operations for Air Mobility Command.

For me, it’s actually Brig. Gen. Mark R. August simple. It’s back here at Ramstein. When I was a squadron commander over on the Ramstein side, when we were converting from the C-130E Hercules to the C-130J Super Hercules, it was the first time since World War II that a unit had transitioned aircraft while engaged in combat operations in more than one area of responsibility.

Q: A:

Q: A:

Q: A.

What was your previous assignment and job?

This is the third time you’ve been stationed on Ramstein, correct?

This is my third time back in the 86th Airlift Wing. We started here in 1995 and came back in 2007 — got a chance to command here. I was offered the opportunity to come back one more time; it’s a job you just can’t refuse. It’s the best job in the Air Force.

What are you most excited about as the commander of the 86th?

It’s an amazing opportunity to come back and command any organization, but as I mentioned before, this is amazing to be a part of this organization again… We are U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s sole airlift wing. If something needs to be moved, we’re going to be the team who does it. But because we also

Q: A:

What are your priorities as the new wing commander?

they have a chance to succeed, especially when we start talking about innovation, when we start talking about improvement, it’s okay to try and fail as long as we learn from our mistakes. The second part of taking care of Airmen is making sure we have the resources we need… And finally it’s getting Airmen the recognition they deserve. We’ve got a lot of folks in the KMC who work for this wing who are too good to go unnoticed. So my job is to help folks get some serious awards. Number four is ENGAGEMENT. Be an ambassador, because living overseas is an amazing opportunity for all of us. I’ve commanded overseas; I know what it’s like to live overseas and the experience of living here in Europe has no equal. Finally, it’s PREPARE. Be ready, because there’s so many things going on in the world right now, our theater expects us to look to the east to assure our NATO allies, to detour our adversaries and be focused on the south as well. We’ve got a lot of operations in Africa so we need to be ready to deploy at any time. August plans to be on the radio regularly, so tune in to FM 105.1 to hear his next broadcast.

Traffic pattern change at Ramstein East Gate Expect traffic pattern changes at the Ramstein Air Base East Gate starting Sept. 20. Of note, the left turn into the East Gate was previously the priority flow of traffic. As of Sept. 20, the left turn will no longer be the priority and must yield to traffic coming from Mackenbach toward the traffic circle. This change is not expected to cause delays. Ramstein CDC area congestion A barrier will be placed to create a single-direction traffic between the Ramstein Child Development Centers from Sept. 17 to 21. Expect daily traffic diversions from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. This is a test to validate permanent traffic changes. Bad Duerkheim wine festival This year’s festival will be from Sept. 7 to 11 and Sept. 14 to 17. Last year’s festival was great, but there were also more than 26 alcohol-related incidents within the first four days of the festival. Many of these could have been prevented if people remembered to drink and behave responsibly. Though the Polizei, U.S. Army military police, and 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron will be out to ensure everyone has a safe and fun time, make sure you have a plan (and a backup plan) on how to get home BEFORE you drink. While at the festival, you can make your way to the Polizei substation (near the North entrance, adjacent to the DRK tent) or call 112, which works all over Germany, for any emergencies. Be safe, and have a great festival! Door-to-door salesmen Living in Europe you may come across door-to-door salesmen offering to sell a wide variety of items ranging from artwork to produce. If you decide to utilize these services, the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron urges you to take caution with your transactions. Make sure the price of the goods is clearly established. If you are using a credit/debit card, ensure you double check the transaction total before signing any receipts – read over the entire receipt! If you do not feel comfortable using your credit/debit card, request to use cash instead. KMC Post Office new website The new KMC Postal Operations SharePoint site is ready for CAC users (Active Duty/Contractor/Civilians) to use for In-processing, Mail Hold or Forwards, Out-Processing, and Volunteer Opportunities at the Ramstein (North/ South) and Kapaun Post Offices. The site can be found through the USAFE SharePoint portal. Questions? Contact the Northside, Southside, or Kapaun Post Office Customer Service sections.

Parking discs needed In certain parking lots on Ramstein Air Base, display of a parking disc is required. The maximum allowable time a car may remain in these lots is posted; the driver must set the disc to the arrival time and make it visible. The following are some parking lots where discs are required; MOMS, Ramstein Officers’ Club, the commissary, the library and the community center. Parking without displaying a disc or remaining past the allowed time could result in a citation. Green Dot Training Have you taken your annual Green Dot training? Celebrating the life of Billie Dysinger Story and photo courtesy of Ramstein Elementary School Billie Kamananipilialoha Dysinger, popular Ramstein Educator and cherished friend, wife, and mother passed away Sunday, Aug 5 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. A native of Hawaii and imbued with an intrepid island-girl spirit, Billie entered the world on Nov. 28, 1977 in Honolulu and never once paused for breath as she travelled the planet as a Department of Defense teacher. A compassionate and enthusiastic advocate for children, she was noted for her extensive work with struggling readers and instructing her fellow teachers on the core fundamentals of literacy and differentiation. Well-known and respected throughout the community, a beaming smile and fierce hug in greeting were her patented trademarks for students, col-

leagues, friends, and strangers alike. Hers was a life marked by a belief that love conquers all, and Billie lived each and every day with an unbridled enthusiasm and positive spirit that impacted all those around her, including her teenage sweetheart and husband of seventeen years Richard. From their first date in high school until their final moments together, theirs was a storybook romance defined by laughter and love, all of which carries on in their treasured son Logan. A graduate of the University of California at Davis with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and teaching credential from California State University, Sacramento, Billie also earned a master’s degree in Education and was a doctoral candidate at Durham University, U.K. with a research focus on differentiated educational practices. Her teaching career took her from the urban sprawl of Title I schools in Sacramento, Calif.,

to the rural fields of Iwakuni, Japan, before embarking on European assignments in Heidelberg and finally Ramstein. A steadfast believer in DoDEA’s mission to serve military-connected families, Billie felt great pride and satisfaction in her work on military bases across the world. Billie is survived by her soulmate Richard, son Logan, parents Henry and Diane Judd of Oregon, brothers Robert of California and Happy of Hawaii. However, her extended family includes the hundreds of children she helped teach, her DoDEA colleagues, and the legion of friends she leaves behind. Please join us in celebrating her uniquely beautiful life on Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. in the Northside Chapel on Ramstein Air Base. Light refreshments will be served following the service at the Cannon House. In lieu of flowers, attendees may choose to donate a new,

USAFE Band plays Berlin Airlift 70th Anniversary Story and photos by Air Force Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa

BERLIN, Germany — In a recording studio at a building known as the House of the Big Band in Berlin, U.S. Airmen assigned to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band listened intently as they were told the story of a band that played in the very same room they were rehearsing in for the Berlin Airlift 70th Anniversary — a Nazi-approved jazz band. At the instruction of Adolf Hitler’s propaganda chief, the jazz band rerecorded hit jazz songs of the time, changing out the lyrics to ones they hoped would demoralize Allied service members. However, the plan backfired as Allied troops who took Berlin at the end of World War II weren’t demoralized. In fact, some troops had become fans of the band, posing in photos with the members of Hitler’s jazz band. A hushed “wow” escaped from the mouths of some of the USAFE Band members as they reflected on the power music has to bring people — even enemies — together while their storyteller, famous German jazz musician trumpeter Till Brönner, geared up to continue rehearsing for their joint performance at the Sommergarten in Berlin, Sept. 4. As guests of Radio Berlin Brandenburg, the USAFE Band and Brönner performed together during a live broadcast to not only commemorate the Berlin Airlift but also the friendship and partnership between the U.S. and Germany. “The Berlin Airlift represented hope for thousands of people seven decades ago,” said. Lt. Col. Don Schofield, USAFE Band commander. “Delivering more than 189,000 flights, the United States Air Forces in Europe remained committed to providing lifesaving supplies to those in need. Our commitment remains the same today, as we work with our partners to build on a foundation of shared values, experiences, and vision.” Dressed in replica “Pinks and Greens,” the uniforms worn by U.S. Army Soldiers during WWII, the USAFE Band played music in the style of Army Air Corps Maj. Glenn Miller, who was a famous big-band musician in his civilian life before he joined the war effort in 1942. “I’ve been living in (Berlin) since

1991, and the first thing when I came was what people actually thought of Americans being here and especially the music they brought,” Brönner said. “It’s a very emotional relationship because the sound of Glenn Miller, the sound of this band, is really a symbol of freedom the Americans brought to Germany.” Brönner joined the USAFE Band on stage after their homage to Miller to play some of his own music as well as some other popular jazz and swing songs such as “Sing, Sing, Sing” to a

diverse crowd that had gathered to listen and dance. “I knew the (USAFE) Band was great, but I didn’t know it was this great,” Brönner said. “It was cool. We almost didn’t have a rehearsal, but everything went really, really well on stage. I think it’s just as important to be a virtuoso on stage as it is to be entertaining. Both of these things can be found in this group. I’m really, really honored to be here today.” Schofield also expressed his gratitude for the honor and privilege to

represent the men and women who participated in the Berlin Airlift. “On behalf of Gen. Tod Wolters, commander of United States Air Forces in Europe, I would like to thank you for the decades-long friendship with the Federal Republic of Germany,” he said. “This action reaffirms our commitment to our NATO allies, echoing the fact that no nation can confront today’s challenges alone. A strong European partnership is not just historic, but it also represents our collective future.”

Carpathian Summer 2018 comes to a close Story and photo by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing/Public Affairs

OTOPENI AIR BASE, Romania —

After many takeoffs and touchdowns, Carpathian Summer 2018 comes to a close. The training exercise brought pilots and aircrew from the U.S. Air Force and Romanian air force together to enhance interoperability and readiness of forces. Carpathian Summer 2018 resulted in successful low-level flying, personnel and cargo airdrops, night formations, and survival training; all of which incorporated the combined airpower between the two allied forces. “One of the primary objectives of Carpathian Summer is building partner capacity and establishing relationships with

the Romanians while simultaneously interflying with them” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Daniel Castro, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot. “We’ve been able to accomplish a lot of successful airdrops and air-land missions, both night and day.” Castro said he and his wingmen learned how the Romanians work around the flightline and were able to integrate the dispatch of aircraft successfully, strengthening their partnership for contingency operations. “A lot of planning and work goes into getting these sorties off the ground,” said Castro. “That being said, it’s been enjoyable. Every day we learned something new.” All in all, Castro said the exercise went smoothly and that it helps the two air forces aren’t

Celebrating Hispanic service members past, present by Tech. Sgt. Monique Chamberland 86th Medical Group National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 until Oct. 15, is an annual celebration of the accomplishments and contributions of Americans with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. The profound accomplishments of Hispanic Americans are particularly notable throughout the history of the U.S. Air Force. Lt. Gen. Elwood Richard Quesada Elwood Quesada was born in 1904 in Washington, D.C., to an Irish-American mother and a Spanish father. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1924 and was commissioned as a reserve officer in 1925. In 1929, 2nd Lt. Quesada was a part of the five-man crew that developed air-to-air refueling during the famous “Question Mark” endurance flight and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his contributions to the advancement of air technology. His influence on the U.S. Air Force continued as he was integral in the development of tactical airground warfare. As commanding general of the 9th Fighter Command, Lt. Gen. Quesada flew into Normandy on the day after D-Day, established headquarters, and directed 1,500 aircraft in aerial cover and close air support for the Allied invasion.

Maj. Oscar F. Perdomo Oscar Perdomo was born in 1919 in El Paso, Texas, to Mexican parents. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1942, entered the Aviation Cadet Program of the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1943. Perdomo flew 11 combat missions and holds the distinction of being the last World War II “Ace in a Day,” having destroyed five Japanese aircraft during one mission on Aug. 13, 1945. Perdomo was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during WWII. Perdomo continued to serve in the Army Air Forces and was transferred in 1947 to the newly formed U.S. Air Force.

Chief Master Sgt. Ramón Colón-López Ramón Colón-López was born in 1971 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1990 and became a pararescueman in 1996. Over the course of his career, Chief Master Sgt. Colón-López has deployed in support of numerous operations to include Operation Southern Watch, Operation Northern Watch, and Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2004, Colón-López was on an operation in Afghanistan, when his helicopter was shot down. Despite the damage, unsure of enemy size, and still under fire, he pressed forward, overrunning enemy positions. His actions resulted in 10 enemy apprehensions, two enemy kills, and the destruction of enemy weap-

ons. In 2007, Colón-López became one of the first six Airmen, and the first Hispanic, to be awarded the Air Force Combat Action Medal. Throughout Hispanic Heritage month, we take this time to reflect and recognize the impact and accomplishments of those who choose to serve our nation and to appreciate the value and enrichment that cultural diversity brings. “The way I see it, the U.S. Air Force values diversity for many reasons,” Colón-López said. “The main one being diversity of thought. Different upbringings give us different perspectives to come up with great solutions to very complex issues. That is the power of America, and that is why I am proud to be an American Airman.”

Ramstein air attack grounds Kaiserslautern Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Ramstein showed off explosive passing plays Saturday against Kaiserslautern to kick off the 2018 season. The opener saw the Royals score four times through the air in a 37-8 win on the RHS campus. Quarterback Jakob Steinbeck ran for a touchdown and was accurate on several long pass plays, hooking up with wideouts Jason Jones and Naser Eaves for three of the scores. J.J. Little threw a halfback pass for another score and Dominique Arizpe scored on a run. Steinbeck was 9-of-13 passing and amassed 213 passing yards in a game where RHS (1-0) built a 32-0 halftime lead enroute to the win. “I liked seeing our offense driving down the field, using multiple formations and still being productive,” Ramstein coach Carter Hollenbeck said. “Jakob was doing a great job of moving the pocket and hitting receivers.” Ramstein is playing with several new

interior players after historically relying on establishment of a run game to base its attack. Bailey Holland, Arizpe and others ran effectively at times but passes were used to break most of the big plays. “We might not be as strong on the line but we are quicker this year,” said senior offensive tackle Solomon Udoaka. “We opened some holes but we can always improve. We basically have all new guys in positions up front so we weren’t perfect, but it’s a good start for our championship run.” Kaiserslautern (0-1) was most impressive on the ground as senior tailback Corey Coombs ran for 90 yards on 17 carries. Coombs, Solo Turgeon and Cedric Ellis each had respectable senior season debuts but the ability of the Royals to convert several third-down plays and

overall stiffness of the Ramstein defense carried the day. “We’ve got to get back and look at film and I’ve got to score some of the time or those runs don’t matter as much,” said Coombs. “They hit us hard in the first quarter and we weren’t ready for it. We buckled down for the second half and did some things.” Little ran the ball some but was most effective on defense, gathering two interceptions to anchor the Ramstein defense along with Holland, Katroy Wright, Logan Ridenbaugh, Kyle Lloyd and others. Little, Eaves and Jones all made hits in the defensive secondary and Cameron Chester played feisty with several contact plays. Plans and strategies will evolve for both teams after another week of practice.

“We had a few problems here and there with communication but our run game will be back next week and in the future,” Eaves said. “We are always going to be able to go to our run game. It’s just going to make it harder on defenses if our quarterback has a lot of options.” Kaiserslautern drove immediately starting the second half thanks to runs from Coombs and calm leadership by quarterback Esteban Saldana. The drive stalled inside the red zone but it was at least an indication of new coach Duke Allen’s system showing signs of working. Later, the Raiders got on the board with a touchdown from Xavier Chambers and a two-point conversion. Kaiserslautern will play Ramstein again at the end of the regular season and this first game did not officially count as a division game. Both teams explore bigger challenges on Saturday with Ramstein hosting Stuttgart in a rematch of last year’s championship game and Kaiserslautern also at home against Lakenheath.

J.J. Little had two interceptions and threw a touchdown pass along with carrying for several gains in Ramstein’s win.

pus. The Royals won all the girls’ points, 9-0, and won 5-4 in the boys’ competition. Kate Sankey played a three-set singles match and won against Stuttgart’s Casey Stophel 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Sankey and Ashlyn O’Connor teamed for a 7-6, 6-0 win in doubles, too. For the Ramstein girls, singles wins were scored by O’Connor, Alex Pinkham, Mercedez Shelton, Maddi Svan, and Lydia Woodfork. Other doubles pairings that won for Ramstein included Pinkham/Shelton (8-5) and Svan/Woodfork (8-1) to showcase some of the Royals’ younger players who are already productive. Most of the participants competed with an eight-game Pro Set format, while a few used traditional set play to determine winners. Boys’ singles wins were claimed by

Jordan Liebig, Colin Kent, and Collin Ritter. In boys’ doubles, Liebig and Kent had a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 win versus the tandem of Charles Griffin and Colin Roedl from SHS. Connor Sankey and Ritter won a doubles point for the Royals, too, to fuel the tight Royals team win. Kaiserslautern tops Hohenfels, Vilseck Kaiserslautern hosted a three-team match to christen its new courts on the Vogelweh campus, losing just two sets while topping Hohenfels and Vilseck. The Raiders got wins in both matches at the top of the girls’ order with Aiva Schmitz and Vicky Thais Lopez sweeping their matches and not dropping any games. Lopez teamed with Taylor Larned to win doubles points and the Raiders had other doubles wins from the

tandems of Lydia Butler / Schmitz and Gabriela Ramirez / Giulia Sanchez. Singles wins on the girls’ side also came from Larned, Butler, Terry Delany, and Avery Standiford. In boys’ play, Mark Butler won his match against Vilseck 6-0, 6-1, then won against a Hohenfels opponent 6-3, 6-1. Luca Petritz, William Alsing, Olaitan Powdar, Randy Moon, Darren Moon, and Micah San Pedro also notched wins in both singles and doubles for Kaiserslautern in the threeTaylor Larned, KHS team meet.

Golf, cross country seasons up and running at schools pairs with Nathan Brewster on the RHS staff. “Phoebe beat Lauren at last season’s Euros but Lauren had topped her during the regular season. They compete hard and we have others who are out this season who give us depth.”

Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Cross country teams as well as area golf athletes have begun their seasons at schools in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. At the close of the regular season, Europeans championships for cross country will be hosted by Baumholder, with athletes again traversing the terrain at Rolling Hills Golf Course. Golf will again have its Europeans championships at the Rheinblick Club in Wiesbaden.

CROSS COUNTRY Ramstein High Last year: Won Division I title With a group of seasoned coaches and a pedigree of strong success, the Ramstein Royals cross country harriers will again look to win the DODEA championship this season. Ramstein won the boys’ overall title last season, and have taken that overall championship in all but two seasons since 2010.

Ramstein coach Alan Correa

Barring injuries, Ramstein looks to have a strong season on the boys’ side with Dash Rogers and Denver Dalpais leading the squad into the 2018 school year. Both runners were a big part, along with graduated teammate Jose Serrano, in helping Ramstein stave off a challenge from Kaiserslautern and the rest of Division I squads. Rodgers finsished fourth overall and Dalpais was eighth, plus Europeans

boys’ qualifiers Enrius Colazo and John Odom also return this season. Ramstein girls who qualified for Europeans last season and hope to contribute and maybe help the Lady Royals challenge Stuttgart’s dominance include Jordanne Hill, Kristen Lucero, Macky Bohne, and Victoria White. Baumholder High Last season: Finished second to Hohenfels in Division III Baumholder’s boys return four of their top five runners from last year’s squad. Jesse Espinoza was the top Division III runner last year, along with seniors Lorne Huxtable and Brandon Bankston, then junior Gavin Baldevia. With the addition of freshman Hiromi Maranga and junior Laurence Huxtable, the BHS boys hope to be able to challenge again for a Europeans team title. Others who will likely contribute to the varsity scoring will be freshman Javaughn Williams and senior Sam Coyour. On the girls side last season, Baumholder missed qualifying for the final Europeans meet after being there the previous three years. This year they will be led by a strong group of freshmen who moved up from the middle school ranks. The ninth graders of note include Sariah Morton,

Maddi Brech, and Kaleena Sais. Last year, Morton was consistently among the top varsity runners in DODEA, but was not able to score because she was in middle school. In addition, sophomores Lydia Coyour and Regan Ridling, plus freshman Emma Swedlund and junior Calissa Ridling look to have a hand in helping push the BHS attack.

players qualify for Europeans during 2017 season. Senior linkster Phoebe Shin, sophomore Ben Todman and senior Lauren Sutherland all return and figure to qualify again for the final meet in midOctober. “You could tell immediately as we opened practices that Ben had been working extensively on his game,” said coach Steve Kennedy, who

Acker won three straight individual DODEA golf titles and her KHS teammate Kaden Senkbeil scored a boys’ championship. Neither of them return this season so the Raiders are looking elsewhere for scoring. George Stephen is the top KHS player for 2018, having placed ninth overall at last year’s Euros. Head coach Chris Grogan understands the potential for falloff after losing two standouts like Acker and Senkbeil, but said Stephen is the type of person who could provide leadership and guidance for new athletes on the squad.

Kaiserslautern High Last year: Finished fourth in Division I Kaiserslautern has trained hard leading up to this season and had five runners to place in the top 20 of last year’s Europeans championships. Joseph Purvis was the high finalist for the Raiders along with Orlando Rojas, Griffen Parcells, Connor Mackie and Yadiel Rojas. Both of the Rojas brothers are back, for head coach Merle Mackie. Kaiserslautern had one athlete, Elonie Ward, to finish in the girls’ top 20 last season but has some younger runners making their first stab at varsity athletics this season and could wind up with success.

21st TSC’s best medics put skills to test in Best Medic Competition Story and photos by Sgt. Benjamin Northcutt 21st Theater Sustainment Command It is 6 a.m. and a light mist begins to fall on Minick Field, Baumholder. Fourteen medical professionals, representing the best of the best from their units, await the opening event, a physical fitness assessment, of the 2018 21st Theater Sustainment Command Best Medic Competition, Aug. 27. Soldiers from Regional Health Command Europe, 18th Military Police Brigade, and 30th Medical Brigade, among others, tested their medical skills, physical fitness, and basic Soldier tasks during the fourday trial. The competition was split into two teams. One team comprised of competitors from the 30th Medical Brigade and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, and the other team comprised of competitors from Regional Health Command Europe. Capt. Stona Jackson and Sergeant 1st Class Steven Lockwood won the competition for Regional Health Command-Europe while 1st Lt. Keith Ammerman and Sgt. Jake Weingartz, won from 30th Medical Brigade. They were recognized during the closing ceremony, Aug. 30, and advance to the Department of the Army-level competition — the 2018 Command Sgt. Maj. Jack L. Clark Best Medic Competition at Camp Bullis, Texas, in September. “The concept of the competition was to test each Soldier on their ability to perform Tactical Combat Casualty Care, as well as their physical and mental agility throughout the competition,” said 1st Lt. Brianna Brown, 30th Medical Brigade, who served as the event coordinator. “More so it is designed to test the readiness of our medics to perform under stressful conditions and throughout daily situations they might encounter.” The event also gives competitors the opportunity to put their skills on display in a contingency environment. “These competitions are about making sure Soldiers are prepared for anything and this competition allows these medics skills and abilities to shine,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Baller, senior enlisted noncommissioned officer for 30th Medical Brigade. You never know what to expect, and at any time we must always be ready to answer our nations call. This type of event showcases Army Medicine and what our medics bring to the fight when called.” The competition was broken down

into four days with a lot of miles put on competitor’s feet. Events included a physical fitness assessment, M4 rifle qualification and stress shoot, Tactical Combat Casualty Care, tailgate medicine, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive event, a mystery event, obstacle course, day and night land navigation, written exam, and a 12-mile foot march followed by the award ceremony to announce the winners. The winners discussed their experiences and lessons learned during the competition. For Jackson this was about redeeming himself for a disappointing performance in last year’s competition. “It is a lot of lessons learned, slowing down and making sure I check all the boxes, and try not to rush what I am doing,” he said. Weingartz offered a perspective of learning to grow through the competition. “I think it is about finding our weaknesses and strengths, and then sharpening our skills to adapt and overcome,” Weingartz said. All the competitors have earned the Expert Field Medic Badge, the Combat Medical Badge, or both. The purpose of the competition was to test the readiness of these Soldiers and find out who are the best medics. “Train hard, hone your skills, and come with the right attitude,” Weingartz said. “That’s what it takes to win.”

Save money and energy by participating in the UTAP By Find-It-Guide.com Many utility companies honor the Utility Tax Avoidance Program (UTAP). This is a great way to save money on your energy bill. In Germany, electricity and natural gas are taxed at 19%; water is considered a food and therefore only taxed at 7%. Unless you enroll in the UTAP, your energy suppliers must automatically add these taxes to your utility bill. Registration for Utility Tax Avoidance Program (UTAP) is a tax savings that is open to all military and authorized members of the U.S. Forces who live off-base. There is a one-time service fee charged by your VAT office upon registration. For more Information please contact the Value Added Tax (VAT) office near you: Ramstein Air Base 86th Force Support Squadron, Bldg. 2118 480-5309, 06371-47-5309 Rhine Ordnance Barracks USAG-Rheinland-Pfalz, Bldg. 162, Room 110 541-9086/9091, 0611-143-541-9091 Photo by Alexander Raths / Shutterstock.com

Payments made easy: When you come to open or close your account, please bring along the meter number and meter reading for each type of service. Set payments are due every month. Payments are usually based on number of occupants. Payments go into a holding account for your annual meter reading. Participation in UTAP requires participation in direct debit from your bank account (SEPA debit authorization). Read more on last page of Property Section
