US, German Defense Leaders discuss shared interests in NATO, Ukraine, Indo-Pacific

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III today hosted German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at the Pentagon for a bilateral discussion on shared interests ranging from Ukraine to operations in the Indo-Pacific region.

Austin commended Pistorius on Germany’s commitment to providing support to Ukraine’s self-defense, citing, among other things, the weapons systems Germany has supplied and the financial commitments it has made.

“After the United States, Germany is the second-largest donor of military assistance to Ukraine, as it resists Putin’s aggression,” Austin said. “You earmarked $7.7 billion for Ukraine in 2024 alone. Germany has donated critical air defense systems and artillery. And we will continue our close partnership to ensure that Ukraine has the capabilities that it needs to succeed on the battlefield.”

Germany has also taken in the largest number of Ukrainian refugees in Europe, Austin said.

“Thanks for everything that Germany is doing for Ukraine’s self-defense,” Austin said.

When it comes to greater Europe-wide commitments to security, Austin said Germany is also contributing greatly.

“Germany’s plan for a permanent brigade in Lithuania is a historic commitment that will strengthen European security,” he said. “And we commend Germany for reaching our shared NATO commitment to spend at least 2 percent of your GDP on defense this year. Germany remains one of our strongest and most reliable allies.”

The secretary also noted Germany’s deployment of troops to support security and stability in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans.

“Whether deterring the Kremlin’s aggression, or bolstering stability in the Indo-Pacific, our two

proud democracies are in lockstep,” Austin said.

Pistorius thanked Austin for American leadership in supporting Ukraine, and acknowledged that the U.S. and Germany have interests outside Europe as well — particularly in the IndoPacific region.

“A free and peaceful IndoPacific is important to all of us, and we want to help promote peace and stability in that region,” Pistorius said, adding that he looks forward to Germany’s participation in the Rim of the Pacific exercise, which begins in June.

The event, also known as Rimpac, is the world’s largest maritime warfare exercise.

“Germany is and remains a staunch ally of the United States,” Pistorius said. “We both will continue to work closely as partners, as allies and as friends. This is more important than ever in this world, and I’m confident that we can achieve much together.”

US, Canadian forces conduct first-ever two-way blood swap

Members of the United States Air Force and Canadian Air Force exchanged whole blood for the first time between May 5 and 6, at Bakonykúti Training Area, Hungary, during Vigorous Warrior 24.

The inaugural transfer occurred following coordination between the two contingencies at NATO’s largest dedicated multinational medical exercise.

On May 5, the American contingency initiated a request for 10 units of Canadian whole blood. The following day, the Canadian contingency reciprocated, requesting 10 units of American whole blood.

“It’s showing that we are equal players at the table,” said Warrant Officer Jeff Scott, Canadian Forces Health Service Headquarters blood program technical advisor. “It opens up the availability to have Health Canada-approved blood, which is equivalent to FDAapproved blood, it allows us to work interoperably without any concern of any additional testing.”

following coordination between the two contingencies at NATO’s largest dedicated multinational

exercise

NATO’s largest medical exercise, uniting more than 1,600 participants from 33 countries to exercise experimental doctrinal concepts and test their medical assets together in a dynamic, multinational environment.

Blood transfers between Canada and the United Kingdom take place regularly. Canadian Forces Health Services seeks to create a trilateral agreement incorporating the U.S., which formalizes a handshake agreement that occurred on a handshake basis in the past.

Canada has relied heavily on American blood during contingencies in the Middle East. Blood used during similar transfers in the future can save lives, on and off

the battlefield, both American and Canadian.

“After coordination with our Canadian partners, being able to execute the transfer of whole blood was an excellent opportunity,” said Mr. Kristopher Felver, USAFE Surgeon General Readiness Office home station medical response program manager. “This represents the vital relationship between the U.S. and Canada and will ultimately save lives.

Whole blood transfers simplify transfusions for providers who can administer them during contingencies, natural disasters and regular medical operations.

“It’s everything in one bag, kept at one temperature, so it's logistically much simpler than component therapy that we’re used to. And it's going to save lives,” Scott said. “It will be able to push into the point of injury and transfuse much faster.”

With blood being unique to each individual who provides or receives it, this exchange symbolizes a commitment between allied services that is more than skin deep. It not only serves as a life-saving resource but a mission-essential one as well.

“Whole blood is significantly important, it’s human fuel,” Scott said. “You're not going to deploy weapons without ammunition or vehicles without fuel, how can you deploy soldiers without blood?”

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense McAndrew visits Baumholder Military Community

Story

photos

Michael McAndrew, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for facilities management, visited Baumholder on May 7 during a tour through Europe visiting U.S. rotational and forward stationed forces, with an emphasis on understanding and assessing infrastructure investments and quality of life issues.

The Baumholder visit began with a briefing delivered by Col. Reid Furman, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, and fellow garrison leaders who provided an overview of various topics influencing projected Baumholder Military Community growth efforts.

McAndrew was then given a comprehensive bus tour of the installation, focusing on family housing, construction and key infrastructure sites.

The tour highlighted the substantial progress made in the forms of completed renovations as well as ongoing construction and base improvement efforts.

Several of the new, highquality facilities being delivered in Baumholder will serve Special Operations Forces moving to Baumholder from Stuttgart, enabling SOF in Europe, which reassures our allies and allows us to respond to threats in that region as required.

McAndrew provides executive leadership on all matters pertaining to the Department of Defense’s physical infrastructure, to include development and execution of poli-

cies, guidance, and procedures for construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of DOD’s worldwide facilities to enhance and preserve warfighting capabilities and to provide safe working and living conditions for our military personnel and families. His responsibilities include all matters related to real property maintenance, facility operations, and host-nation programs related to facility construction and management.

435th AGOW Airmen take part in transformative experience

Story and photos by Capt. Jacob Murray

435th Air Ground Operations Wing

Public Affairs

Members of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing recently took part in a deeply enriching five-day journey to Romania that blended spiritual growth with community service. The trip included hands-on service projects, cultural exploration, and daily sessions devoted to spiritual discussions, providing a memorable experience for all involved.

“This trip was about giving back to a local community,” said Capt. Benjamin Pederson, Task Force 82 Staff Weather Officer for the 13th Expeditionary Combat Weather Squadron. “When Communism took hold in Romania, the Communist Party took land and properties from the local Orthodox church, such as their community center. They repurposed it into a propaganda theater. Now, 35 years after the fall of communism in Romania, we can still work on returning something that gives back to the people.”

The team from the 435th AGOW continued work that a previous 435th AGOW group started in 2023. This year, they worked on the main hall that is going to be used as a theater for plays and other community events. Members worked on scaffolding to scrape off chipped paint. They also removed a bricked-up doorway. To the surprise of the community, they were able to complete the project in three days.

“We were able to give back to the Romanian community in a big way,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Tanabe, Cyber Systems Operations Noncommissioned Officer for the 1st Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron. “Assisting a great city in renovating a place that was taken away from the church by communism, to give the city a place to have social gatherings, religious ceremonies, and a place for generations to come together was a great experience. Truly inspirational.”

The journey was not just about service but also included significant spiritual enrichment sessions. These sessions were led by Lt. Col Lane Campbell, 435th AGOW Wing Chaplain and Father Sorin Dobre, a priest in the Orthodox Church. Daily sessions covered various themes that encouraged the participants to reflect on their personal beliefs and the impact of their service. One memorable event took place at Dracula’s Castle and was uniquely framed around the concepts of ‘Dracula, blood, life,’ prompting discussions on life’s essence and personal sacrifice.

The final spiritual lesson on Friday morning wrapped up the expedition, giving the team a chance to look back on the renovations completed as well as lessons and memories of their time in Romania. The team returned with strengthened spiritual bonds, illustrating the powerful impact of combining service with spiritual growth.

Lt. Gen. Patrick Matlock, deputy chief of staff for G-3/5/7, U.S. Army, paid a visit to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz on May 9, to gain insights into future stationing actions and to observe the progress made on the movement of Special Operations Forces to Baumholder.

The visit started with a comprehensive briefing held at the Baumholder garrison headquarters on Smith Barracks, facilitated by Col. Reid Furman, commander of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, along with Maj. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commander of 21st Theater Sustainment Command and Senior Responsible Officer, and other key leaders within the garrison.

Furman provided a thorough overview detailing the garrison’s footprint and services, with emphasis on infrastructure priorities, investments, and forthcoming projects.

The briefing included discussions on military training areas, quality of life initiatives, and the planned relocation of SOF2BH by FY26/27. This strategic move is intended to address overcrowding concerns in Stuttgart, improve training capabilities by aligning units with suitable training areas, and enhance airfield support within the region.

Matlock’s tour itinerary included visits to SOF2BH areas in Baumholder, the Miesau Army Depot in Miesau, Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern, and Coleman Worksite in Mannheim.

challenging circumstances.

Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Karl Coutinho and his coalition partners performed a significant surgical feat at Erbil Air Base’s coalition medical facility on April 19. Led by Coutinho, a team of Operation Inherent Resolve coalition surgeons conducted the first emergency surgery at Erbil’s medical facility in over three years, an exploration and bilateral orchiopexy. The procedure demonstrated the coalition forces’ interoperability and commitment to delivering premier medical care under

The U.S. service member was transported by aircraft from Baghdad to Erbil in order to receive expert care from Coutinho, who is a practicing urologist in New Jersey as well as the 44th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s brigade surgeon. Along with U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Julianne Oates, Lt. Cmdr. Justin Frisenda, and German Army Lt. Col. Sebastian Fischer, the team performed a successful twohour procedure. The service member discharged from EAB’s medical facility shortly after the completion of the surgery, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Oates, a nurse anesthetist involved in the surgery expressed her satisfaction with the procedure, “It was a pleasure to be a part of this patient’s care, it was great to see our operating room in action, and to see our hard work and training come to fruition.”

The precise nature of the procedure reaffirms the multi-national coalition’s ability to maintain skilled medical teams and provide advanced healthcare at a moment’s notice.

Fischer, an anesthesiologist, highlighted the significance of of international cooperation, saying that “I’m proud and happy to be part of a multinational surgery and work

with my international colleagues.”

As Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve continues its mission, the surgical milestone at Erbil Air Base stands as a testament to the professionalism of its medical personnel and their collective determination to provide excellent care in emergency circumstances.

“Medicine during a deployment requires a multidisciplinary approach,” Coutinho emphasized. “A cross coalition and multi-branch surgical team seems complex but rehearsals and exercises prepared us to work as one unit. Regardless of where we are from, we all speak the same language of medicine.”

ABC IN KMC: Kindergraves

From 1952 to 1971 American infants, born at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or at German hospitals nearby, who passed away at birth or shortly after, were laid to rest at the main cemetery in Kaiserslautern (Waldfriedhof) adjacent to U.S. Army Daenner Kaserne. At that time, many military members did not have the capability or funds to send the bodies to the United States.

Four hundred-fifty-two babies were buried at the cemetery and members of the German-American and International Women’s Club knew of the graves and maintained them early on, as the military families had moved on to other duty locations.

In the 1980’s, the cem -

etery management contacted the ladies and informed them that the initial lease was expiring, and the remains of the babies would be removed, in accordance with local custom, to make room for cemetery expansion.

The women’s club was determined to save the children’s graves from extinction and appealed to the local Air Force base legal office for help, however they determined the military could not do anything. The club then appealed to the U.S. State Department. They too determined that they had no authority in the matter.

After the German authorities realized the steadfast position of the women’s club, the cemetery management agreed to allow a private organization directly affiliated with the military to assume responsibility for the gravesites. The

Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group (U.S. Air Force E-9’s) assumed this role. The cemetery management agreed to move the gravesites to a new area in the heart of the cemetery and drafted a new lease. The Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group now serves as the entrusted agent for the lease and the U.S. Army Command Sergeants Major Association also supports the activities.

The Kaiserslautern Kindergraves Memorial Foundation was established in 1986 and its purpose is to maintain the memorial site, organize ceremonies in remembrance of the children and be a conduit of information for family inquiries. Representatives from the Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group and the German-American Club (former German-American International Women’s Club) serve as co-chairs for the foundation.

Each spring following Mother’s Day, a memorial ceremony is sponsored by the KKMF in cooperation with the Kaiserslautern Military Community and Kaiserslautern city officials. Floral wreaths are placed at the front monument and a candle lighting ceremony takes place in memory of the children. A flower and an American flag are placed at each grave marker. The Air Force Jr. ROTC Color Guard leads the procession to the gravesite.

The KKMF receives no funding from the U.S. government. The upkeep of the Kindergraves is possible through the generous monetary donations of the local community. The Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group organizes volunteers to accomplish yearround maintenance (grass cutting, edging, trimming and stone cleaning). A group of

German students from Burg Gymnasium Kaiserslautern help clean and decorate the graves and attend the ceremony. Members of the United States Air Forces in Europe Band also helped clear the area in preparation of the ceremony.

On occasion, parents or siblings of the children come back to honor their deceased sons or daughters, sisters or brothers, and take part in the ceremonies.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. at Daenner Chapel, which will be followed by a wreath laying and candle lighting ceremony with leading U.S. Air Force, Army and local representatives. A flower and a tiny flag are placed on every grave, and anyone interested is welcome to join the observation in honor of the children or assist in the upkeep of the graves.

The Alsace region of France on the border of Germany has over 700 hiking trails including short and long distance routes from beginners to advanced. One of my favorite hikes in the Alsace region is the Fleckenstein Castle route, a trail that I have hiked many times over the past 10 years, in every season, and I still enjoy it every time. Each season brings a change of scenery on this 10 to 15-km-long trail, depending on which routes you select.

The hike along the Coal Burner’s and Ghost Trails will take you on a journey from the village of Gimbelhof past four castle ruins. Signs are posted that direct you along the hiking trail to Fleckenstein Castle. Before arriving at the castle, you will come upon coal burning kilns made of logs with descriptions in German, French, and English.

Getting started on the Fleckenstein Castle hike

Once you reach the visitor center you can purchase tickets and get information from flyers in English, shop for souvenirs, and gather information about the surrounding areas. You will also find bathroom facilities, hot and cold beverages, ice cream, French pastries or full meals.

Fleckenstein castle is an adventure within itself along the route. The entrance corridor has a vast display of pictures of the Fleckenstein family as well as historical information available in English.

As you make your way inside you will come upon the ruins of horse stables, a human hamster wheel, a watchtower, the

dungeon, prison, moat, water well, and the dark enchanted staircase that leads you to the upper levels to the kitchen, bath and latrine areas. You will also discover an amazing view of the Northern Vosges forest, valleys and numerous sandstone rock formations.

If you hike this trail in the fall, take along an extra bag for apples, pears, and chestnuts which are free for gathering starting in September.

Hiking the Ghost Trail

After your visit to Fleckenstein castle, head back towards the visitor center then trek upwards on the Ghost Trail towards the Loewenstein, Hohenburg, and Wegelnburg castle ruins. This leg of the hike can be a

bit challenging due to steep terrain, slippery roots and rocks, especially during damp weather.

This part of the trail is not stroller or small child-friendly. Suggested age is nine and above for kids that can handle a fullday hike without being carried or dragged along. Follow the blue and white Ghost Trail signs to the five corners area that has different routes which are clearly posted.

This a good place for a break before following the trail to the right that leads you to the other castle ruins. There are information signs posted at the base of the ruins in German, French, and English. You can take the stairwell to the top of the ruins and enjoy more amazing views.

However, be cautious of the steep and narrow steps especially during your descent. Along the downhill trek from Castle Hohenburg to Castle Wegelnburg, you will find a slow-flowing natural spring and a small gazebo area to take a break or use for shelter if the weather takes a bad turn. From this point, you will cross the border back into Germany and see the German flag painted on trees and sandstone formations as well as border crossing stones that lead you back into Germany as you trek uphill to Wegelnburg.

After visiting Wegelnburg Castle, make your way back into France to the five corners and follow the sign for Gimbelhof. This is a narrow downward trail taking you back to your starting point. Along the way, you will reach a medieval playground with swings, zip lines, slides and a lot of fun if you bring the kids along.

The best way to wrap up this adventure is to enjoy some French pastries, food, and wine with a view of the region at the Restaurant Gimbelhof which is located at your starting point.

Getting to Fleckenstein Castle

The start point is a little over an hour away from the KMC via A62 towards Pirmasens. Parking is free at Restaurant Gimbelhof.

Parking GPS location: Restaurant Gimbelhof, Ferme du Froensbourg, 67510 Lembach, France

Beware of internet scams

Recently, we have been contacted by individuals who have fallen victim to internet scams. In some cases, the victims tried to buy an object from an alleged U.S. military member, transferred money and never received what they paid for. Other cases include building a romantic relationship online, eventually leading to the scammer requesting money. Do not publish pictures of your DOD ID, IACS Cards, private or DOD Passports online.

• Report lost or stolen IDs to the proper offices.

• If selling items privately, be aware Germans might be skeptical and ask for an in-person meeting.

• Do not transfer money to a person you met on the internet.

• Always be careful when selling

household items, goods or even cars. If someone contacts you claiming to be, or send a transporter (instead of picking the items up and paying themselves), consider that a red flag.

• Understand that no U.S. Military Leader will ever contact, or respond directly, to anyone on Facebook or Instagram, or any social media platform. If you receive a notification from anyone claiming to be a military leader in the KMC, or BMC, that person is an imposter, and we would appreciate it you would report them through the platform.

• Remember, always exercise caution when it comes to talking to someone online, especially if you don’t know them in real life.

• If you have fallen victim to internet scamming, please report the incident to the German police.
