of information and education in making healthy lifestyle decisions. People may not want to know what their blood pressure is, but knowing what is going on inside is a first step in making better choices, she said. Undra Marbury-Robinson escorted the students to the event to support volunteering. This is her second year supporting heart health awareness by bringing students out to volunteer. “It’s about learning about how to give back to the community,” she said.

Students at Aukamm Elementary are getting hands-on experience in mathematical concepts that will lay the foundation for their future math learning, thanks to an enterprising teacher and a little bit of extra money. Aukamm Elementary Math Coach Diane Johnston was awarded close to $1,400 to support the development of conceptual mathematics knowledge in her classroom. This “$mart Money” was conceived as a motivational tool to allow teachers to develop innovative methods and practices in their classrooms, according to a DoDEA news release. Johnston was one of 10 teachers across the DoDEA Europe East District to receive “$mart Money” funds. She was among three teachers at the school who had applied for the grants, said Aukamm Elementary Principal Alice Berard. Johnston requested a combination of teacher resources and math manipulatives that will be

arriving at the school shortly. “The teacher resources are to help teachers provide lessons that will match our new college and career readiness standards,” she said. This curriculum caters to struggling students, gifted students and all those in between for each grade level, said Johnston, who teaches kindergarteners through fifth graders. These new tools put the emphasis on reallife, applicable problem solving skills, she said. The manipulatives Johnston ordered will help students visualize shapes and mathematical concepts. Students will be able to construct three-dimensional forms from two-dimensional magnetic shapes. “They won’t have to abstractly imagine what’s going on,” she said. “They can actually build it.” Playing with these shapes is a fun way to promote an understanding of mathematics in students at different stages of learning. “It’s great for the younger kids to promote buildSee ‘Math’ on page 6

News and features Alternative burials available to veterans overseas By U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Casualty and Retiree Service Office Not everyone wants their final resting place to be inside a gated cemetery. In Germany and other areas of Europe, they compassionately recognize and approve a resident’s request to be closer to nature when they die and when the family has chosen cremation, by offering an alternative — “Waldfriedhof” or a woodland cemetery. Forest cemeteries are natural burial grounds that are not closed to the public, but rather a welcome memorial for all to see and are an alternative method of burial for veterans overseas. There are no manicured lawns or headstones to maintain here, just nature. When a family chooses to have a loved one buried in a cremation-only forest cemetery, their cremated remains are placed in a biodegradable urn. The urn is placed in a designated hole around a tree that has been prepared to the proper depth by standards. A name plate is placed on a tree for family identification and stands as a living tombstone for the deceased.

Soldiers render military funeral honors for an Army retiree during a ceremony with the surviving family members at a Ruheforst Cemetery in Laubach, Germany. The burial cost and number of urn graves available around a single tree vary and are dependent upon the size of the tree. “Military Funeral Honor Teams at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden have adjusted to this type of environment,”

said Dennis Wahl, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Casualty Manager and Retirement Service Officer. The Army has done a tremendous job of honoring our deceased veterans and their survivor’s wishes when it comes to providing Military Funeral Honors Wahl said.

Depending on the size of the tree and distance to the adjacent trees, the team will position the bugler at a distant tree that allows him or her to enter the flag folding area from the direction behind the burial tree location. This allows for easy access without going through the family members to reach the flag folding site. The team will in most cases bring a portable chair, without straight legs that could sink into the ground, for the next of kin. There are two advantages to this choice of burial location. The first advantage is the cost which ranges from approximately 450 to 1,400 Euros ($500 to $1,900), which can be more affordable for veteran family member survivors. The second advantage is the grave site is purchased with no contract termination date. A normal cemetery grave plot is purchased by the total years they wish to have the grave plot for their love one and at the end of the contract the site is cleared and made available to others. German scouts compete in Pinewood Derby race By Herald Union staff Wiesbaden Cub Scout Pack 13 recently turned an American tradition into and international affair by inviting their German counterparts to the startline of the Pinewood Derby Races Jan. 28. Twenty-four Cub Scouts from various dens and 14 “Drei Lilien Pfadfinder” scouts from Oberrad in Frankfurt participated together this year. “My favorite part of the derby is the race itself, and watching the boys and their excitement,” said Kristin Prather, Pack 13 Scout Leader. “This year was extra special because we got to share this beloved Cub Scout tradition with the Pfadfinder group. They really enjoyed it.” Pfadfinder is a German

Scouting organization that, unlike the Cub Scouts, includes both boys and girls. In Germany, almost all scouting troops are coeducational. The Tony Bass Auditorium was overflowing with nervous energy as the scouts anxiously waited for their race to begin. Whenever the scouts weren’t racing, they had activity stations set up to keep them occupied which added an extra layer of excitement. All the scouts had six weeks to plan and design their derby cars following official rules for car weight and dimensions. Derby cars are not allowed to exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications. “They put so much work into these cars, and seeing them

race and seeing their names on the screen is so much fun for them,” Prather said. Gavin Yevcinez (Wolf Den) took first place, Caden Willis, second, and Isaiah Perry (Wolf Den) took third. The three overall winners will progress to the Barbarossa District Pinewood Derby, which includes all scouts in the Transatlantic Council from the Barbarossa District. The race will take place March 4 at the Fitness Center on Clay Kaserne. Prather noted how grateful she was for all of the assistance the pack received to make the day special for the boys to include Boy Scouts from Troop 107, members of U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Better Opportunities for Single

Bringing your non-US DeCA celebrates 150 years spouse back to states DeCA Corporate Communications release

By Wiesbaden Legal Center If you are considering marrying that special someone you met overseas, or already have, you may be wondering whether he or she can come back with you when you PCS back to the U.S. The good news is that a spouse may qualify for family member visa and permanent residence, but the process for obtaining that status can be long and can require a lot of legwork. Immigrant visas are required by anyone seeking to take up indefinite or permanent residence in the US. Generally, a non-U.S. citizen spouse can stay in the U.S. for up to 10 years after entering the country on a family member visa. The non-U.S. citizen spouse cannot enter the U.S. without a visa, which may take up to eight months to obtain. There is a two-step process for obtaining the family-member visa, and U.S. Customs and Immigration Services recommends starting the process as soon as the couple is married. Unfortunately, there is no way to expedite the process for service members, but completing the process while stationed in Germany is probably faster than doing it in the U.S. The first step is handled by USCIS. The U.S. citizen spouse (the “petitioner”) must complete an I-130 Form and provide enough evidence that the couple is in a bona-fide relationship. A marriage

entered into for the sole purpose of obtaining legal residency status for the foreign spouse is not legal, and a person who knowingly enters into such an arrangement may be subject to criminal and civil penalties under U.S. law. Any documents submitted in support of the I-130 Petition must be translated into English or German. The cost to file the petition is $535. The second step requires the non-U.S. citizen spouse to show that he or she is eligible to enter the U.S. This step is handled by the Visa Processing Unit of the Department of State and includes an interview and medical examination. Among the many reasons a person could be ineligible for immigration to the U.S. is a serious or drug-related criminal conviction. In some cases, the applicant may be eligible for a waiver. A separate visa is required for every family member you intend to bring back to the U.S. If your new spouse has children, you will be required to pay a separate filing fee and complete the process for each child. If you do not intend to get married until you return to the U.S., your fiancée may qualify for a different kind of visa. Guidance on immigration will vary depending on the situation. If you have any questions or concerns regarding immigrating to the U.S., please make an appointment with the Wiesbaden Legal Center.

FORT LEE, Va. — Patrons can expect to see special promotions, contests and a lot of birthday flair as the Defense Commissary Agency and its industry partners kick off the 150th anniversary celebration of the modern commissary benefit. “From now through the actual July 1 anniversary date, commissaries worldwide will highlight the long history of the commissary benefit and the great savings and value the benefit has brought to our military community since 1867,” said Tracie Russ, DeCA’s sales director. DeCA is beginning the observance in February with kick-off banners placed at all stores worldwide. Over the next five months, other scheduled anniversary events and activities include the following: • Limited edition, specially labeled products using nostalgic commissary photos and the 150th gold logo. • Celebrity endorsements at commissaries with in-store radio. • Beginning in March and ending July 31, commissaries will use their “Wall of Value” locations for the “150 Years of Value and Savings!,” directing shoppers to discounted promotional savings on products. • Other events will be tied to the month of May for Military Appreciation Month and the worldwide Healthy Lifestyle Festivals in June. Patrons are encouraged to check their local store for details of specific anniversary events such as cake-cutting ceremonies. The 150th anniversary observance ties back to the official beginning of the modern commissary benefit on July 1, 1867. It was

on that date, two years following the Civil War, that enlisted men received the same privileges available to officers since 1825 — the right to purchase goods, “at cost price,” from their post’s subsistence department warehouses. These sales could take place at any post in the United States or its territories, wherever the local commander deemed them necessary, regardless of location. As years passed, retirees, spouses and families also became eligible shoppers. The commissaries mirrored changes and progress in the civilian retail grocery industry, from self-service to product proliferation. As the nation sent its armed forces overseas, commissaries followed: Cuba, the Philippines, China, and Panama all had U.S. military commissaries before 1905. Surcharges came and went. During the World Wars, commissaries spread all over the globe, from Europe and the Middle East to the Far East and even South America. DeCA was begun in 1991 to create cost savings and store uniformity, bringing together all the stores of the four services. “At DeCA we want to celebrate our military members and their families for all they do to serve this nation,” Russ said. “We may be throwing the party, but the celebration belongs to our patrons.”

Meet first African-American Medal of Honor recipient By Katie Lange

Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON — Of the 3,498 service members who have received the Medal of Honor throughout U.S. history, only 88 have been black. The first black recipient of the award was Army Sgt. William H. Carney, who earned the honor for protecting one of the United States’ greatest symbols during the Civil War — the American flag. Carney was born into slavery in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1840. His family was eventually granted freedom and moved to Massachusetts, where Carney was eager to learn and secretly got involved in academics, despite laws and restrictions that banned blacks from learning to read and write. Carney had wanted to pursue a career in the church, but when the Civil War broke out, he decided the best way he could serve God was by serving in the military to help free the oppressed. In March 1863, Carney joined the Union Army and was attached to Company C, 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry Regiment, the first official black unit recruited for the Union in the north. Forty other black men served with him, including two of famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass’ sons. Within a few months, Carney’s

On July 18, 1863, the Soldiers of Carney’s regiment led the charge on Fort Wagner. During the battle, the unit’s color guard was shot. Carney, who was just a few feet away, saw the dying man stumble, and he scrambled to catch the falling flag. Despite suffering several serious gunshot wounds himself, Carney kept the symbol of the Union held high as he crawled up the hill to the walls of

Fort Wagner, urging his fellow troops to follow him. He planted the flag in the sand at the base of the fort and held it upright until his near-lifeless body was rescued. Even then, though, he didn’t give it up. Many witnesses said Carney refused to give the flag to his rescuers, holding onto it tighter until, with assistance, he made it to the Union’s temporary barracks. Carney lost a lot of blood and nearly lost his life, but not once did he allow the flag to touch the ground. His heroics inspired other Soldiers that day and were crucial to the North securing victory at Fort Wagner. Carney was promoted to the rank of sergeant for his actions. For his bravery, Carney was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on May 23, 1900. Carney’s legacy serves as a shining example of the patriotism that Americans felt at that time, despite the color of their skin. As for the 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry Regiment in which Carney served? It was disestablished long ago, but reactivated in 2008. It now serves as a National Guard ceremonial unit that renders honorary funerals and state functions. It was even invited to march in President Barack Obama’s inaugural parade.

Think before you snap and post By Mercedes Woodberry Wiesbaden Criminal Investigative Command

Did you know a lot of crimes involving teenagers were posted online for the world to see? Technically the teen posted it for their friend(s) to see, but the photos or videos were repeatedly shared with others and in some instances have gone viral. This is how videos shared with just a few friends become dispersed to the masses. Some videos and photos have recently come into the hands of local Criminal Investigative Command and Military Police Investigations offices. Some of these videos include assaults, sexual acts and nude photos. The source for all of the media recently provided to this office is Snapchat. Did you know Snapchat posts and messages can be saved? A lot

Feb. 16, 2017

of students let their inhibitions down when it comes to Snapchat because the common belief is the post or message will automatically be deleted. This is not necessarily the case. Snapchat has an extension app which allows anything you send to be saved. This does notify the sender that the snap was saved, but another way people are saving snaps is by recording the snap using another device. This allows the recipient to keep the snap without the sender being notified. What’s the best way to solve this problem? I always tell students if you do not want your parents seeing it, don’t do it, don’t snap it and don’t post it. Everything you post online leaves a digital footprint which could seem harmless now, but could be detrimental during adulthood. Not only could it be detrimental, but

since you’re in Germany in addition to potentially violating United States Code you could also be in violation of the German Criminal Code. When you share an intimate photo of someone without their permission you can be charged under German Law. When dealing with social media applications such as Snapchat, students and parents should always remain vigilant. Have fun snapping filtered photos and sharing them with your friends and family, but do so in a smart and safe manner. An agent at the Wiesbaden CID Office is always available if you would like to talk about or report anything criminal or anything you think could be criminal. We are located in Bldg. 1030 on Clay Kaserne, next to the mailroom.

Boy Scout upgrades youth cottage Eagle Scout service project inspired by faith

Austin Ellwein, with Wiesbaden Boy Scout Troop 65, prepares the teen room for a new coat of paint at the Youth of the Chapel Cottage on Hainerberg as part of his Eagle Scout Service Project.

Herald Union Staff The Youth of the Chapel USO Cottage on Hainerberg was recently transformed into a warm, welcoming place for teenagers to join in fellowship, play music, and hang out through the efforts of a local Boy Scout. Austin Ellwein of Wiesbaden’s Troop 65 said he was inspired by his faith and a vision in his heart to tackle the renovation as his Eagle Scout Service project. To become an Eagle Scout a Boy Scout must demonstrate leadership while performing a project that will benefit an organization in the community. Unlike the reality television shows which transforms spaces in a matter of a few commercials, this extreme makeover took nearly 200 hours of planning and execution spread over 18 months. The work included painting the interior, securing furniture, building benches for extra seating, adding pillows, cushions, floor coverings, plants, and wall art. In addition, updated band instruments were acquired for student musicians in the Praise and Worship Band. To commemorate the project, Ellwein, a sophomore at Wiesbaden High School, also worked with the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Matthew Kreider to coordinate a ribbon cutting and cottage dedication event. More than 50 people attended the Jan. 22 reopening of the Youth House giving Ellwein an opportunity to

Now, when kids study geometry, they work with these geometry nets, which are flattened representations of threedimensional solid forms. This helps students envision the different sides and vertices, which can be a difficult abstract concept. The new materials that Johnston requested for her classroom include magnetic individual shapes that students can use to build and create the forms.

ing and seeing how shapes go together, and then the older ones can actually use it to build a rectangular prism and then count the faces and vertices,” Johnston said. She said the curriculum includes a great combination of teacher resources to help provide them with rich lessons; in other words, assignments that will allow students to wrap their brains around the concepts, as opposed to simple memorization. “There was a real focus on memorizing formulas [in the past] and not really understanding math,” she said. “With our new standards there’s just a lot of focus on ‘hands-on’ and understanding why we do certain things.” And for kids who are struggling, these tools can make all the difference for later when it comes to learning higher math. “The math rules and the algorithms come later after they’ve

had experience and exposure to these concepts.” Johnston said. “So much of math is abstract, so we want to provide ‘hands-on’ concrete experiences before we get to length, times width, times height.” The classroom tools will enable the teachers to reach more students, Berard said. “Students’ learning styles are very different, and this offers another opportunity for students who have a different learning style. We want all students to be able to conceptualize math.” Both educators agreed: There’s a place for memorizing formulas and a place for calculators, but the foundation and the goal is that students have a good understanding of mathematical concepts. “Learning these higher level math skills — in elementary — that is going to help them in later math, in Geometry and Trigonometry. They have to have the foundation to build on,” Berard said.

First impressions count. A firm handshake and a gracious smile can set the tone for the relationship that follows, but when it comes to lending a hand to Soldiers and Families relocating overseas, it’s an effective sponsorship program that is key to creating a lasting impression. “Sponsorship is a commander’s program, but it takes a team to ensure the program is effective,” said Michele Begosh, a theater program manager for sponsorship with the U.S. Army Europe G1, one of 20 agencies that participated in U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Total Army Sponsorship Program Rodeo Feb. 10. The annual rodeo, which is a unique event conducted at overseas Army installations, helps strengthen an essential part of that team — the sponsors. Soldier and civilian sponsors play a major role in the relocation process, and the support they provide for incoming personnel impacts readiness. “When that family is ready, the students are ready, the spouse is ready; then that Soldier or civilian is going to be ready for the unit and the unit readiness will improve,” Begosh said. During the event, unit sponsor coordinators and sponsors met with various services to gather the knowledge and resources needed to assist personnel during all phases of a relocation — pre-arrival, arrival and post-arrival. Some participants were experienced sponsors seeking new information to pass along while others were looking for advice regarding individual situations. Sgt. 1st Class Iain Gillett attended the rodeo as one of the unit sponsor coordinators

Michele Begosh, U.S. Army Europe G1, theater program manager for sponsorship for USAREUR units, explains the sponsorship process and how it supports unit readiness during Wiesbaden’s Sponsorship Rodeo Feb. 10. for his brigade. Like many Soldiers, Gillett has gone through the PCS process numerous times, both personally and as a sponsor. and he says it’s always different. “No matter how seasoned you are, or how gung-ho you are about your PCS, there is always ambiguity going into the situation,” Gillett explained. “The sponsor’s job is to help remove the unknowns as much as possible.” Gillett attended the rodeo to address any gaps in information he provides to sponsors in his unit. He says it’s his job to ensure unit sponsors are doing their part, have access to resources and are kept abreast of anything new or changes that could impact or delay the process. Participants learned about new information, such as Vehicle Registration’s recent change to an appointment only system, understanding requirements of relocating overseas with a pet, and the importance of hand-carrying shot records for children. Managing expectations is a large part of a sponsor’s job. The garrison’s Housing Office provided key takeaways to help sponsors address the differences in overseas housing and announced that renovated

bachelor officers’ quarters will be available by summer. Representatives from both Tricare and the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic wanted to ensure sponsors ease the minds of incoming personnel regarding host-nation healthcare. “Don’t be scared of the language,” said Tommy Davenport, Tricare representative. “Many doctors speak English, and we do have patient liaisons.” Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Evans, who was training to be a unit sponsor coordinator, attended with Gillett. Evans has seen examples of both good and bad sponsorship and knows good communication is essential for good sponsorship. “Remaining in contact with the service member is the most valuable thing a sponsor can do,” Evans said. Gillett and Evans are currently tracking more than 30 incoming personnel for their company, and after their time at the sponsorship rodeo, they’re bound to make a good first impression. For more information about sponsorship, contact the USAG Wiesbaden sponsorship and benefits coordinator at (0611) 143-548-1615 or stop by the Welcome Center, Bldg. 1023W, Room 119.

BREMERHAVEN, Germany — The Surface Deployment and Distribution Command received and staged the first set of the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade’s Chinook, Black Hawk, and Apache helicopters on Feb. 11, here. Over the next two weeks, the SDDC and the 16th Sustainment Brigade will facilitate the reception, staging, onward movement, and integration of 10th CAB at seaports in three countries across Europe. “Twenty years ago, there was constant military activity at the ports with 300,000 U.S. Soldiers in Europe,” said Johan Benner, a marine cargo specialist for the 838th Transportation Battalion, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. “Although there are now 30,000 U.S. Soldiers in Europe, with the addition of regionally allocated forces coming into the area from the continental United States, I’ve seen the flow of military equipment at ports building back up.” With the arrival of 10th CAB just weeks after the arrival of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, the ability to receive and move armored and aviation brigades swiftly through Europe’s interior lines of communication is critical for speed of assembly and the massing of forces. The logistical processes of

Jacy Schmidt, commander, 635th Transportation Detachment, a native of Manhattan, KS. “We are also evaluating the capacities of the seaports for future operations.” After touching down at the ports, 10th CAB Soldiers will begin generating combat power by assembling their helicopters and moving to four different countries. Over the next nine months, 10th CAB will

conduct medical transport, exercise support, and aviation operations during major multinational training exercises in Europe focusing on interoperability with allies and partners. “This is an exciting and unique opportunity to train with our allies and operate out of numerous NATO countries. I think it’ll be a great chance to flex our capabilities, assure our allies of our presence, and grow as a joint force,” said 1st Lt. Amber Ingwell, aviation officer, 2nd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, a native of Tomah, Wi. “We have all worked tirelessly to train for this deployment, and we are eager to prove our capabilities.”

Army Warrior Care and Transition Keep pets safe to highlight eligibility criteria from bird flu By John Rosenberg

Warrior Care and Transition

ARLINGTON, VA — How and when is a Soldier eligible for the Warrior Care and Transition Program? It is important for Soldiers, their families and chain-ofcommand to understand eligibility and the application process. Throughout the month of February the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Warrior Care and Transition, the lead proponent for the WCTP, will answer these and other questions. The focus is on how wounded, ill and injured Soldiers enter the program. This requires an understanding of the entry criteria, the rehabilitation process, career and educational opportunities and personal goals. WCT ensures that wounded, ill and injured Soldiers assigned to Warrior Transition Units receive world class care and services. The WCT mission is to oversee, integrate and synchronize policy, advocacy and execution for warrior care initiatives and the Army Wounded Warrior Program as an integral enabler of Army readiness. According to Col. Matthew St. Laurent, Deputy Chief of Staff, Warrior Care and Transition, “Our goal is to help

Soldiers and their chain-of-command determine if they are eligible for the program and guide them through the entry process. Our hope is that every eligible Soldier receives the care and support they deserve.” In summing up the enduring mission of WCT, St. Laurent says, “We have a template for success. Where else in the world can a wounded, ill and injured Soldier have these resources at their disposal? This is an effective Army program that Soldiers, their families and chain-of-command must understand, not only its scope and benefits, but also how to access it.” The DCS, WCT embodies the Army’s enduring promise to care for its wounded, ill and injured Soldiers. WCT works to provide a dedicated time, place and process for those Soldiers and their families to complete a comprehensive transition plan to successfully return to duty or transition into civilian life. For more information on WCT, visit the WCT website www.WCT.army.mil, follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ armyWCT or join us on Facebook at www. facebook.com/armyWCT.

In early February of this year, the Hessen State Veterinarian released an update on the H5N8 Avian Influenza virus, sometimes called “bird flu”. This type of influenza occurs naturally in wild aquatic birds (like seagulls, ducks and geese) throughout Europe, and they do not usually get sick from the disease. However, domesticated birds, like chickens and turkeys are sometimes exposed to AI if they share territory with the wild birds. When AI infects the domestic bird populations, a more severe disease can occur, and often death results. In the past three months, the state veterinarian’s office has tested more than 2,500 birds for H5N8 AI, and 11 tested positive for the disease. The most recent case was a swan found along the shores of the Rhine River near Wiesbaden-Biebrich. Since November of last year, the state authorities recommend any domestic poultry populations be kept indoors to prevent exposure to possible disease from wild birds. Thankfully, the threat to human health and pet health is very low. Although this type of influenza has not yet been known to infect humans, direct contact with sick or dying birds should be avoided. Good hygiene and public health measures should be practiced, to include proper hand washing technique with soap and a disinfectant if contact does occur. To minimize exposure to our pets, don’t let them sniff, lick, eat, or investigate sick or dead birds. Dogs should be leashed within 50 meters (55 yards) of the Rhine River banks, especially in the Biebrich, Schierstein and Amöneburg suburbs. Cat owners shouldn’t allow their cats to roam freely outside. AI is not transmissible in poultry meat, so there is no risk of disease transmission from preparing, cooking, or eating poultry bought at the commissary or on the German economy. To decrease the risk of foodborne diseases, however, always cook poultry to 165 F. Although there have been no reported cases of this virus being transmitted to humans, you should not touch dead birds you may come across. Instead, please report dead animals, especially birds, to the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Directorate of Public Works Pest Control by calling 548HELP (4357). Please provide the building number and describe where the animal is located (such as on grass, sidewalk, near curb) to assist with pick-up. DPW works with German authorities to test the birds as they continue to monitor the outbreak.

Amelia Earhart Playhouse presents classic comedy Story and photos by Karl Weisel Wiesbaden Family and MWR Marketing

Love, murder and insanity play central roles in the Amelia Earhart Playhouse’s newest production, the classic comedy, “Arsenic and Old Lace.” “I think it’s a fun show,” said Laurie NeSmith, the play’s director. “It’s referred to as a dark comedy, but it’s not malicious by any stretch. It moves very quickly.” Late-night movie fans may remember the uproarious film version from 1944, directed by Frank Capra and starring Cary Grant. The zany plot follows the misadventures of recently married writer Mortimer Brewster who visits his eccentric, but lovable, relatives only to discover that their “charity” operations involve murder and basement burials in the old family home. “Arsenic was one of the first shows I directed, and I actually directed my dad in that show in Mississippi,” said NeSmith, explaining, “I kind of grew up in the theater and majored in psychology with a minor in drama.” The Department of Defense civilian spouse and community volunteer said she directed and acted in a number of different shows over the years. “’Annie’ was my first show here (at the Amelia Earhart Playhouse where she played Miss Hannigan) and then I was asked to direct the next show. “I think the appeal is that it (‘Arsenic and Old Lace’) is one of those classics that maybe today’s audiences are not so familiar with,” NeSmith said, adding

The cast of “Arsenic and Old Lace” rehearse a scene for the Amelia Earhart Playhouse's upcoming production.

that this is an opportunity to “bring it back to a new audience.” Offering a comedy as entertainment is a way for audience members to “laugh at themselves, get a break from everyday stressors and enjoy a positive experience,” the director said. “Audiences get a chance to see their friends and coworkers on stage.” “I figured this is a good way to get out of the barracks, have some fun and give back to the community,” said Sgt. Reggie Graham, who plays the role of Lt. Rooney and is an AFN broadcaster when not on stage. “I did a little acting in high school and college over 10 years ago. What this does for me is gets me out of my zone,” said Graham. “The acting community includes so many different people. This helps me socially and to meet new people – something I would have never done sitting in my room and playing Xbox.” “I did a lot of theater in the UK but didn’t do anything for several years until I saw an ad for auditions for the ‘The Elephant Man’ here,” said Bobbie LordingPfanner, a British citizen who has performed in a variety of productions at the Bobbie Lording-Pfanner serves up a deadly Amelia Earhart Playhouse, glass of wine to Erik Kraemer during re- Frankfurt International Thehearsals for the Amelia Earhart Playhouse’s ater and Wiesbaden’s Kryp“Arsenic and Old Lace.” tonite Radio Theater.

“It’s always nice to come back to the Amelia Earhart Playhouse. I really appreciate being able to take part,” said Lording-Pfanner, who plays one of Mortimer’s aunts in “Arsenic” and was recognized with a prestigious Topper Award for her ensemble work in the Amelia Earhart’s past production of “Agnes of God.” “I like the theater. It’s lovely working with the sort of people you meet here – a complete mix of people with experience and people who have never acted before,” she said. “It’s a real community theater – a family — which is nice.” They say it takes a village – and in the case of community theater, especially one operated primarily by volunteers – people of all skills and talents ensure its success. “I’ve been doing set design and construction for the last several shows,” said Tim Coble, a DoD civilian spouse. “I needed to do something with my time … and I’ve really enjoyed it. You meet some great people, and it’s really fun. “I’m a mechanical engineer, and this is a great way to use that creative side,” Coble said. “I probably spend close to 20 hours a week. … The best part is you really do get to meet some talented and interesting people. It gets me away from the house and involved in the community.” “We had such success with ‘Annie’ and we wanted to continue the momentum,” said NeSmith about her

hard-working volunteer thespians and backstage crew. “We want to encourage community members to come out and see the show. In addition to supporting friends, neighbors and coworkers, continued support means the Amelia Earhart Playhouse can continue its mission of offering English-speaking theater and various creative learning opportunities.” The director invited anyone interested in getting involved in upcoming productions to volunteer “and become a part of the AEP family.”

“Arsenic and Old Lace” Show opens Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. Other play dates are Feb. 25, March 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance will be featured at the Amelia Earhart Playhouse on Sunday, March 5, at 2 p.m. The theater is located in Wiesbaden at KonradAdenauer-Ring 39 (Amelia Earhart Complex). Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance at Wiesbaden Arts and Crafts, Bldg. 1214, on Clay Kaserne. Payment at the door is also possible, space permitting.

Wiesbaden High School presents award-winning musical Story and photos by Maximilian Huth Special to the Herald Union

A new year, a new musical. With the success of “The Little Mermaid” behind them, the Wiesbaden High School Music and Theatre departments will be performing the classic musical, “The King and I.” Created by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. The original Broadway show ran in 1951. A classic choice versus last year’s Disney fantasy, both the cast and crew are excited for what is to come. “It’s different from what we’ve done in the past, and to me, that’s exciting,” said Christopher Harbach, the director of the winter musical. When selecting the play, there is a limited amount of plays our high school is able to perform, because of copyright releases, Harbach said. Having already performed “Grease” and “The Little Mermaid,” as well as many other plays, Harbach and band director Scott McGlynn have agreed not to perform shows they’ve already directed. “Part of my job is to expose not only our students, but also the community to other shows,” Harbach said. “It’s got the potential to be pretty powerful, in a different type of way than ‘The Little Mermaid’ was.” Accuracy on the historical setting is a priority for the drama team, according to Harbach. “I think the authentic period feel of Siam at the turn of the century will be breathtaking.” Alex Tone’s main role as the dramaturg, is to provide historical accuracy and authenticity for the play. “I am absorbing as much information as I can.

Wiesbaden High School students Hannah Cornish (left) and Alex English rehearse lines for “The King and I” during Drama practice last month at the school. I am watching all the performances, all the movies, and I am reading the book,” she said. “The more accurate it is, the more believable it will be, and the more memorable the show would be.” With so many adaptations and revivals of the play, the focus isn’t only on the authenticity. “It’s been around for so long, not only do you have to understand what it is in Siamese culture, but also in theater culture,” Tone said.

Actors Madeline Harbach, who plays Tuptim, and Aaron Trail, who plays Lun Tha, rehearse for the upcoming Wiesbaden High School winter musical “The King and I.”

Much of the cast was on the fence when initially deciding on the play. “The kids weren’t thrilled about it, but I pushed for it,” Harbach said. “Even though the show is old, there is still value in doing these shows.” While understanding the divided opinion on the play, he said he looks to mix it up by choosing different types of shows for his performers to experience. “At first I didn’t know much about the play, but the more I learned about it, the more excited I became,” Tone said. “I didn’t know the show,” admitted Alex English, who is playing the role of the King of Siam. “This is a totally different show. I never imagined myself doing so much historical research. It’s much darker, and it’s based on real life,” he added. “For the cast we had, it was a perfect fit,” Harbach said. With six to eight main roles, there is a large focus on the lead characters. “It showcases and features lead performers,” Harbach added. With a new type of production, returning actors shared how the performance will be different compared to last time. Having played Ursula in “The Little Mermaid,” Hannah Cornish’s new part

as Anna Leonowens is a dramatic change. “Last year was over-the-top and whimsical, so this time I have to be more reserved and authentic to the character,” she said. Being more authentic requires actors to focus on making their characters as realistic as possible. This will be one of the largest undertakings the WHS Drama Club has ever done. “I want people to remember ‘Wow, they had an outstanding drama program,’ ” English said. “It’s going to be rough, but I’m ready for it.” Harbach says although he is nervous about the complexity of the show, he has confidence in the team. “I have a really good team, and I really trust this team.”

“The King and I” The play will run Feb. 23, 24 and 25 at 7 p.m., Sunday Feb. 26 at 2 p.m., and March 2, 3 and 4, at 7 p.m. at Wiesbaden High School. Tickets are $10 and are available at whs.ludustickets.com.
