Aquatic Center in Belleville achieves energy efficiency and enhanced lighting through LED solution

BACKGROUND The Quinte Sports & Wellness Center is a multipurpose recreational facility developed by the City of Belleville. It has an Aquatic Center that houses three swimming pools and conducts a variety of programs catering to children, adults and senior citizens. The main pool is also sanctioned by Swim Ontario to host swim competitions. Facilities Manager, Peter Lyng had a mandate to make the facility as green as possible and was looking for ways to control electricity costs which made up approximately one third of his annual budget. Peter also wanted to improve the existing light levels in the pool area which were not optimal in terms of color, intensity and distribution. A lighting solution replacement presented him the opportunity to explore LED that not only offered energy and maintenance savings, but also offered improved lighting output to create a better experience for all users of the Aquatics Center.

BEFORE LIGHTING SET-UP The lights in the Aquatics Center are operational for 18 hours a day, 364 days a year. The pools are used mainly for recreational purposes and occasionally for regional and provincial swim competitions. High temperatures and humidity levels need to be maintained to ensure that users feel comfortable at all times. Water temperature in the pools: 29° - 34° Celsius Ambient temperature: 32° Celsius Humidity level: 65% The total area of the pool is close to 15,000 sq feet. To light up this area, there was an existing High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting solution in place that included 35 fixtures with two 400 watt HID lamps in each fixture. The fixtures had a quartz re-strike solution

HID fixture (previous HID lighting fixture at Belleville pool)

to provide instant light after a power failure.

LIGHTING CHALLENGES 1.

The area needed varying lighting levels based on the type of programs run by the facility. During swim meets, lighting levels needed to be at 56 foot candles (FC) while during recreational programs, 26 FC was adequate. The prevalent light output was approximately 40 – 50 FC.

2. There was a significant glare on the water in the pool resulting from the existing HID fixtures that were mounted face down from a height of 26 feet. Certain areas in the pool were much darker than others and the light output was not evenly distributed. 3. The total power consumption was 30,800 watts which was significantly high when compared to other solutions available in the market. 4. The approximate maintenance costs on relamping and ballast replacement averaged $5,000 a year. Significant glare on water

AFTER RAB DESIGN’S SOLUTION – DESIGN PROCESS

FIXTURE TILTED AT AN ANGLE

FIXTURE AT 0° TILT

RAB Design created a custom lighting layout based on: • • • • • •

the floor size and layout mounting height reflectance off the walls, ceiling and water the impact of sunlight coming through the windows ambient temperature and humidity levels the need for enhanced visibility to provide a safe environment

RAB Design’s experienced lighting engineers surveyed the facility to determine the appropriate style of light fixture and light levels for each portion of the pool. They used advanced photometric calculations to simulate light output and proposed a state-of-theart LED lighting solution through RAB Design’s signature lighting fixture ‘Buffalo’. Upon customer approval, RAB Design’s flexible in-house manufacturing process allowed for delivery within a short timespan of 4 weeks. Fixtures were installed after hours without any downtime to pool operations.

DETAILED SOLUTION DESCRIPTION The Buffalo fixtures offered the responsiveness, flexibility and improved lighting output while reducing energy costs significantly. 1.

The existing 2 X 400 watt HID fixtures were replaced by Buffalo 130 watt, 200 watt and 285 watt LED fixtures. The new LED lighting solution consumes approximately 14,440 watts per hour at full power compared to 30,800 watts per hour before. • 53% reduction in power usage during swim meets • 77% reduction in power usage during recreational programs

2. The new fixtures provide a minimum of 56 FC at full brightness in the water and a minimum of 70 FC on the deck.

Custom prepared lighting layouts to determine light levels prior to installation

3. A beam pattern of 80 degrees was chosen for wider light distribution. Light fixtures were tilted at different angles to provide a low min/max ratio and even light distribution across the surface area of the pool and deck. 4. The color temperature of the fixture is 5700K which resembles daylight and creates a lighting effect that is similar to that of an outdoor pool. 5. The new Buffalo fixtures also offer 0 – 10 V standard dimming capability which allows in house maintenance crew to adjust light levels according to the type of program or event being conducted. 6. With LEDs, full brightness is achieved instantly, thus no warming up period is required. 7. There was no need to modify or recreate a new mounting system since the new fixtures easily integrated on to the existing mounting system. 8. Maintenance costs have been minimized as LEDs last for a minimum of 50,000 hours. Based on facility usage of 18 hours a day, 364 days a year, the fixtures will last a minimum of 8 years. Additionally, the rebate program for LED usage in the province of Ontario led to an energy rebate of $8,000.

“We’re seeing about 55 FC even on the darker sides of the pool” – Peter, Facilities Manager “Our youth swim team comes in twice a day and they absolutely love the new lights. Lifeguards also feel they have better visibility below water” – Sarah, Aquatics Supervisor “Rab design was very responsive and adjusted their production schedule to accommodate our timelines. They completed the project during christmas and new year holidays with five days to spare” – Peter, Facilities Manager “The deck looked yellowish before and now it looks cleaner with the white light. It’s like having complete natural light inside.” – Sarah Routhier
